ceremonies taking place today from san francisco to washington to remember fallen service members on this memorial day. >> hundreds of people gathered for a ceremony at the san francisco national cemetery in the presidio this morning. those taking part included congresswoman nancy pelosi. she said we all owe a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices of u.s. troops who lost their lives in service. one of the attendees who serves in the u.s. army told us he lost friends in afghanistan and iraq. he said memorial day has a deep meaning for him right now. >> i'm an assignment where i work at the defense pow mia accounting agency, where we search for missing. and conduct conduct investigations and recover their remains to bring back to the u.s. because the united states has made a promise to never leave anyone behind. >> before the ceremony, scouts from across the bay area placed

an estimated 30,000 flags on the graves at the presidio. state attorney general rob bonta was in the east bay today to honor the country's fallen soldiers. >> bonta gave the opening address at a memorial day ceremony at alameda veterans memorial park. he says those in the military who made the ultimate sacrifice should be honored every day, not just through words, but actions. >> one way we can do that is to honor the brothers and sisters who are returning back to our community after serving. it's our responsibility to take care of our veterans, returning home to make sure they have access to great benefits, to stable housing, to a good job. >> speakers also paid tribute to prisoners of war service members who are missing in action and gold star parents on the peninsula. >> the people of hillsborough honored memorial day with a parade. residents lined the

streets as bands, organizations and members of the community moved along the parade route. the celebration continued with a music festival and a carnival, and in mill valley, the celebration of memorial day included plenty of community pride. young volunteers served up a pancake breakfast and took time to appreciate the liberties that sometimes are taken for granted. near the downtown square, students participated in a newer tradition, telling stories in poetry form of how they interpret memorial day. >> americans that we honor on memorial day are men and women in the military that lost their lives in battle or military training. >> it's our way to give back to the community, have a great opportunity to meet and collaborate and talk with our community members, and really pay some homage to those that have served for our freedom. >> the event wrapped up with the city's annual parade. >> president joe biden honored our nation's fallen soldiers at arlington national cemetery this morning. >> about half. port hub the

commander in chief laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. >> since 1921, it has stood as a final resting place for fallen service members whose remains were never identified. >> today we join that grief with gratitude. gratitude to our fallen heroes and gratitude to the families left behind and gratitude to the brave souls who continue to uphold the flame of liberty all across our country and around the world. >> president biden also spoke about the loss of his son, beau biden, an iraq war veteran who died of brain cancer nine years ago this week, and defense secretary lloyd austin spoke of tank commander staff sergeant steven booker, who died in iraq in 2003. >> staff sergeant booker was one of the first americans killed in the iraq war, and i know firsthand how tough the fighting

was that day. it's only fitting that the army has named its newest armored combat vehicle, the m10. booker >> the new tank also honors private robert booker, who was killed in world war two. >> pro-palestinian protesters blocked traffic on the 101 in downtown los angeles this afternoon. demonstrators marched onto the freeway and blocked all lanes before moving onto the shoulder. there is no word on whether police detained any of the protesters. now, this protest comes as there's international outrage over the killing of at least 45 people in an israeli airstrike in rafah. the us military says the missile was launched at two hamas leaders, but it ultimately set fire to a refugee camp of displaced palestinians. fox news trey yingst tells us israel's prime minister is admitting it was a tragic mistake. >> a civilian car drives slowly through the streets of rafah.

it's a makeshift hearse for the bodies of palestinian civilians. >> which humanity is this? where is the world? where is the nation? >> overnight, israel launched air strikes against gaza's southernmost city of rafah, targeting two senior hamas militants. in the process. they reportedly killed dozens of civilians who were sheltering in tents. the israeli military, facing international condemnation, has opened a rare probe into the incident. >> the details of yesterday's incident are still under un investigation, which we are committed to conducting to the fullest extent. the idf regrets any harm to noncombatants during this war. >> the united states is weighing in on the strikes, calling on israel to use restraint with the biden administration's national security council saying in a statement, quote, the devastating images following an idf strike in rafah last night that killed dozens of innocent palestinians are heartbreaking amid clear disagreements between president biden and israeli

prime minister benjamin netanyahu about how to proceed with the war in gaza, the israeli leader saying this about the incident overnight. >> despite our utmost efforts not to harm noncombatants last night, there was a tragic failure as the war in gaza approaches the eight month mark in direct negotiations between israel and hamas are set to resume this week in tel aviv. >> trey yingst, fox news. >> right now, we're following a developing story of a deadly crash in san jose. police say two vehicles collided at montague expressway and o'toole avenue just before 2:00 this afternoon. one driver was pronounced dead there at the scene. all westbound lanes of montague expressway are closed from 880 to mccarthy boulevard. police warn the investigation could last several more hours. oakland firefighters have remained on the scene of a four alarm lumber yard fire. >> that fire started at about 745 last night at the economy lumber warehouse on high street near interstate 880 today, the

fire department said. it is working with the property owner and a heavy equipment operator to pull that building apart to reach some remaining hot spots. at one point, more than 75 firefighters were on the scene trying to fight that fire last night. no one was hurt. investigators still trying to figure out what started that fire. san jose police are now looking for a suspect in connection with a homicide at an apartment complex. officers sayf a man who had been shot at blossom rir way, just west of the westfield oakridge mall,t about 245 yesterday aft. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. officers say they have not identified a suspect. anyone with information is asked to contact san jose police. still to come tonight. beating the odds and beating the stigma of women in wrestling. a 20 year old from walnut creek is getting ready to compete in the summer olympics. >> also ahead, a new push to

to place civilian oversight over the sheriff's office. if approved, the oversight board would consist of seven citizens. they could request information or hold hearings and make recommendations to the board of supervisors. community members have been pushing for some type of oversight for years. advocates point to the high end custody death rate at santa rita jail, which stands at nearly 770 over the past ten years. >> i personally feel that as citizens, we it is our duty to be vocal and advocate for those that are not able to advocate for themselves. a lot of, like my son, some people are

experiencing mental illness. >> two points of contention are whether investigations would have to get the green light from the sheriff. the other is whether the commission would have its own legal counsel. the board of supervisors is set to take up the issue on june 4th. >> new at six. an east bay woman is headed to the olympics in paris this summer. 20 year old media law is a standout wrestler who is going for gold. ktvu alice wertz joins us live tonight from walnut creek with more on the story. alice >> that's right. mike. we're here in walnut creek where this young woman has grown up all her life. she's been training for wrestling. wrestling has only been open to women in the olympics. it's only been an olympic sport for 20 years. she's hoping to bring home a gold at the summer olympics in paris this year. >> oh, my gosh, it's a dream come true. i've wanted to go to the olympics ever since i can remember, ever since i started wrestling. and so it's still hard to believe. >> amit elor grew up in walnut creek. at 20 years old, she's a

powerhouse in her sport with demonstrated passion and strength as a wrestler in the past two years, i have won three world championships in 2022, i qualified for my first senior world championship, which is the official wrestling world championship. >> no age restrictions and for me, that was kind of like jumping into unknown territory since he was four years old. >> she's wrestled the youngest of six. her father was an athlete as some of her siblings. growing up. >> i also played a lot of other sports. my siblings played a bunch of sports. we are a family of sports and of trying a whole bunch of different things and pursuing our goals. >> wrestling is historically a male sport and allure has endured the knocks i've heard all sorts of things for a while. >> i was embarrassed of it. i would tell my friends that i wrestle and they would think that it's wwe. they would ask, what's your costume? or your what's your stage name? and i was like, no, it's an actual sport. >> none of it has deterred her or diminished her dream. >> a lot of times i would tell friends about it and they would make fun of me, say, it's gross.

the wrestlers are stinky wrestlers are stupid. i've heard all sorts of things, and so i've constantly wanted to prove them wrong and, continue to pursue it no matter what they said. >> she'll go to paris for the opening ceremonies, then head to normandy for training with her team, then back to paris for her competition. >> i'm excited to see paris. i'm excited to be in the opening ceremonies, which sounds crazy. it looks like this year we're going to be on boats down a river, which is really cool. >> her advice to anyone with a dream don't be afraid to dream big, right? >> i used to tell people that i wanted to become an olympic champion, and i almost felt embarrassed. i felt like i was crazy to even think or dream of that. but here i am, so close to my dream. >> and amit eller has a lot of friends and family supporting her. a lot of family is going to be attending the paris olympics to watch her compete. as for her preparation, she's going to be training before the olympics until she leaves town and she's

great. temperatures are not out of control. so this week i mentioned it earlier. we're in a position in the 5:00, but we're in a position where the jet stream is just going to dip down and then it's going to fluctuate, it's going to dip down and it's going to go up. there's going to dip down. but subtle dips. so our weather fluctuations are going to be subtle fluctuations. so low 80s to mid 80s in the inland bay valleys all week. mid 70s to upper 70s around the bay and the warmer spots all week in the coast. all week in the 5058 to 65 degree range. so which is fine, but it's very much, just not there's not a lot going on. okay. there, i said it and yesterday or not last week and the week before, we've had a very similar pattern. so it's just sort of interesting to see it develop week after week. but it's a money pattern. it's good. it's just it's just kind of stale. >> all right bill, thank you. tonight tributes coming in for bill walton a hall of fame basketball player and well known

broadcaster. he died today after a battle with cancer. he was 71 years old and spent a lot of time here in the bay area, especially when his son luke was a coach with the golden state warriors. >> our jason appelbaum joins us now with more on walton's life. yeah, he was surely one of a kind. >> it's often a cliche, but he was a true original. was bill walton a legendary, hall of fame broadcaster, basketball player, and a man who lived his life to the fullest and a california guy through and through. he was born in mesa, just outside of san diego, played his college ball at ucla under the legendary john wooden, where he won two national championships, was named player of the year three straight times, and he led the bruins to a record 88 game win streak from 1971 to 1974. he was the first overall pick by the portland trail blazers, where he would win an nba championship and an mvp award. he battled numerous injuries throughout his

ten year nba career did culminate, though, with a second nba championship with the boston celtics, five years after his retirement. in 1987, he was inducted into the naismith basketball hall of fame, and as great as he was as a player, walton is known, you know, perhaps better by many as a legendary broadcaster. often he was goofy. he went off on tangents, but he was always positive. he had four sons, loved the grateful dead, and his motto was i'm the luckiest guy in the world. roxy bernstein, he was his longtime broadcast partner at the pac 12 network. >> he had this insatiable appetite for learning, and he wanted to talk to people and get to know who they were and what epitomized bill was the countless games that we've done over the years. bill would always stay after games for at least a half an hour, 45 minutes, take every picture, sign every autograph. there was

a line practically out the door of people waiting just to get a piece of bill. and he never disappointed. >> yeah, he was one of the most kind hearted people you could ever meet and no doubt gone way too soon. bill walton, dead at the age of 71. warriors head coach steve kerr knew him well and he said his incredible energy, passion, love and zest for life was never turned off. >> i don't remember that first title, but the 86 celtics team, as you mentioned, he battled through all those injuries. and i thought that was always impressive because he was a key role player, almost like a sixth man coming off the bench to get that second ring right before he retired, i thought was always, yeah, that was sort of surprising because he had missed full seasons with various injuries. >> so to get back on the on top with the celtics at that point in his career, that was one of the most impressive things he did. >> and you could always find him at a grateful dead show because he was always the tallest one, i believe. >> you know, self-proclaimed deadhead and i believe he said

drone video here showing the aftermath of a bike festival in arkansas. this severe weather also hitting texas, oklahoma and kentucky. the storms destroyed homes and businesses and left roughly 400,000 customers without power. kentucky's governor issued a statewide emergency declaration. >> it could be days until power is restored because there was significant damage to the power infrastructure. >> president biden says fema is on the ground conducting damage assessments. he says he's also contacted governors to see what federal support they might need on this memorial day. >> many here in the bay area paused to think of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for

our country. ktvu photojournalist martin holton has a closer look at the gathering of hundreds of people for today's ceremony at the national cemetery in san francisco. >> to our veterans, we thank you for the inspirational legacy that you established for all of us. to be very clear, you have left big boots to fill today is a special day for me because of my family and my ancestors. >> it's a way of me giving back to them. it's a way of me honoring the two boys i didn't bring home. it's a way for me to honor the young kid that got hurt. it's a way for me to heal. >> this day is filled with a lot of emotion, growing up, having many family members in the military and losing them in the military, we're here today for my uncle ken. claire, who was killed in vietnam. he was only 21 years of age. war is really,

highway one, a circle of flowers , a miniature motorcycle and a photo show the community's love for the mayor's son, 28 year old joaquin. >> dominic jimenez alvarado, at the spot where he lost his life on saturday. >> he was just a great dude right? he's part of the big group of the motorcycle community, he's very friendly, very smart. you know, everybody loved him. >> friends are still in shock visiting the intersection at mirada road where jimenez was killed in a crash with a pickup truck around 5:45 p.m. saturday. >> we just wanted to come down and officially pay my respects. >> jimenez was a leader of a close knit motorcycle group, bonded by a love for rides and the open road. >> he's the one guy to go next to you. like, check out your bike with you, talk about your dyna, talk about his. >> on monday, a san mateo county sheriff's investigator surveyed the crash site, taking additional measurements and analyzing the roadway. joaquin's father says his son had been in san francisco with his

girlfriend, nancy, and was returning to half moon bay when a pickup truck collided with his motorcycle. the shock spread through half moon bay at city hall. the city council said in a statement that joaquin was a union stationary engineer in san francisco who loved photography. his father, mayor joaquin jimenez, is the first mexican born mayor of half moon bay who helped the city through last year's tragic mass shooting that hurt the migrant farmworker community. friends say joaquin had been planning an upcoming ride to los angeles for a motorcycle show. >> he was one of the, you know, important leaders of the group and, yeah, we're looking forward to it. but guess we just have to ride for him. you know, moving forward. >> you know, when you're riding next to somebody, you know, for like seven, eight hours a day and then, not there the next day, you know? so it's just tough. >> funeral preparations are still being made, and some friends say that they hope officials will take another look

at this intersection for traffic safety in half moon bay, jana katsuyama ktvu, fox two news. >> safeway has become the latest chain of stores to eliminate self-checkout lanes at some of its bay area locations. the company attributing shoplifting for the decision. but the change is also forcing many customers to wait longer in the checkout line. ktvu sally rasmus explains the dilemma for retailers when making a decision like this. >> inside the safeway at 51st and broadway in oakland, all seven self-checkout kiosks are now gone. there's an empty space and soda can display where the machines used to be. >> now. now we have to wait in line, especially if it's a busy hour. now you've got to wait another half hour. just to get a checkout, especially if they're short staffed. >> and this store isn't the only one. safeway confirms it's eliminating the self checkout option at some of its bay area stores. in a statement, they explained, quote, operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the bay area given the increasing amount of theft, self checkout kiosks have been removed at a few stores. like other local businesses, we're working on ways to curtail

escalating theft so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers, end quote. shoppers we spoke to were disappointed about the change and what it could mean with, more people coming in with the crowd is a little bit larger. >> it's going to be a problem. but because you have a longer lines in the, checkout, this is a real conundrum. >> you know, for, for these retailers, again, trying to offer the best customer service, the best customer satisfaction, but still trying to make money. >> retail experts like patrick penfield of syracuse university says companies like safeway are balancing the demands of labor costs with customer convenience and theft prevention. without self-checkout, the store and customers will have to make adjustments. >> what they're going to have to do is hire more people, you know, try to figure out how to make the lines shorter. >> shoppers are unsure about whether that will really happen, though. >> i understand it's a business. they have to take care of their product, but it's also at the same time it's an inconvenience. the change isn't happening at all. >> safeway stores in the bay

right now on san jose's newest piece of public art. this week. it's called threads woven, and it's a massive mural. right near san pedro square. it will take a lot of volunteers to get it done. but as ktvu south bay reporter and ruben explains, plenty of people are willing to help. >> they're armed with rollers and paint, though not necessarily experience. >> no, none at all. i mean, maybe some finger painting with my daughter's classroom. >> still, these volunteers are ready to make their mark to turn this section of san pedro street into something beautiful, where we have 1250 volunteers coming out. >> that's 250 a day that we're managing to kind of help us with this big paint by number coloring book situation that we've spent the last week setting up. >> and this mural will be massive, more than 12,000ft!s. the inspiration, a serape blanket and the diversity of san

jose. but while it was designed by local artist jimi paints, it's being executed solely by volunteers. >> this isn't about me. this is about the community, the people. and you know, the street is now pedestrian only, so that just makes it even more theirs. >> businesses along san pedro, like sushi confidential, welcomed the project. their hoping it lures in customers who might stop to take photos. here before dinner. >> we'll just draw them down here. it's a great attraction and it creates kind of this vibe. >> this is a joint venture from the san jose downtown association, adobe and local color, but they say it's part of a bigger picture effort to activate downtown and make it vibrant. >> it takes the block parties that we have. it takes the murals that we do. it takes the beautification that we are creating along santa clara. >> but most of all, organizers hope this public art brings the community together. >> we get to create together, and we're going to care for these, this mural together for many, many years to come. >> new groups of volunteers get trained every couple of hours to

heritage month coverage ktvu christien kafton takes us inside troop three in san francisco's chinatown as they look to the past and future of the troop. >> on a may evening, the scouts of troop three in san francisco gathered to work on an eagle scout project. >> we're actually making three benches and a planter box, and we're going to actually these these are for the washington high school. >> assistant scoutmaster stephen chang was a scout himself in troop three and says they have a unique place in history. >> troop three was the number was the first chinese american boy scout troop in the united states period. >> this is my uniform when i was a scout. >> the troop has met in chinatown since july of 1914, just four years after the boy scouts organization was formed. jones wong was also a scout here

before joining the navy. he says the troop originally came together at a time when most of the country viewed those of chinese ancestry as non-americans. >> but if they can say i'm a boy scout, i'm a, you know, i'm a scout member, they could say, you know, that's as american as apple pie. and i'm a scout. >> over the years, troop three persevered and even thrived. generations of scouts helping to define the american experience, meeting other scouts from across the country and showing them that all scouts, no matter their backgrounds, are more alike than not. >> and then once they find out that, oh, you're no different from me, then there's a, there's a, there's a bond that or there's something that changes. so they don't they don't look at you quite like, oh, you're the foreigner or something. now troop three finds itself facing a new challenge, declining numbers, fewer children in san francisco and more options means fewer scouts. >> now, the scouts say they're evolving, and troop three says

allowing the bay. and at the coast it's been cooler certainly today with the fog and then breezy conditions as well. so that 83 in antioch, 81 in fairfield. those are the warmest spots. most people in the around the bay in the big cities cooled off a couple of degrees. but in the inland valleys they actually warmed up a couple of degrees. you see the fog out there and it's kind of working its way into the peninsula. and it'll be around tomorrow morning as it was this morning. and there's a live picture of it. you see the fog and blue skies off in the distance and not that far from june now. and it's about right. you should be seeing a lot of fog right now. sea surface temperatures start to get cold. the winds start to kick up. it's breezy today, so you see that that was blowing pretty good earlier. that flag that's a good indicator. but the winds are onshore. so winds 15 to 20 miles an hour and bam it's almost summer. and not far at all now. and you got this counterclockwise flow. this is a system going by to the north. that's what's keeping it from getting sultry or getting into the 90s. around here is this continuance of these systems,

these energy packets going to the north. and that happens all week. this one goes by, cools down, then it warms up. another one comes by cools. so it's just a cycle like last week and like the week before. and it will continue. so these are the right now temperatures. and you can see the sea breeze literally in the green. and you can see inland not too impacted but along the coast and around the bay cooler by a significant amount to 13 degrees in san carlos, six degrees in san jose. so the fog in the morning, that's how it's going to look. and then tomorrow afternoon it burns off kind of a little bit like today, but more of a burn off. and then less fog wednesday morning and no fog wednesday afternoon and wednesday and thursday start to warm up because of that. and same with thursday. so wednesday thursday will be the warmest days of the week, most likely. but it doesn't get hot. i mean, maybe mid 80s, maybe, maybe an 88 degree reading. and livermore valley, eastern livermore up by vacaville. but overall all those were the highs from today or for
