sports. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> good evening. i'm crystal bailey. we begin tonight in half moon bay, where the community is in mourning after the son of the city's mayor was killed. this weekend in a motorcycle crash. ktvu jana katsuyama spoke with the mayor, as well as friends who visited a memorial today at the crash site. >> half moon bay is hurting along highway one, a circle of flowers, a miniature motorcycle and a photo show. the community's love for the mayor's son, 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado, at the spot where he lost his life on saturday. >> he's just a great dude, right? he's part of the big group of the motorcycle community, he's very friendly, very smart. you know, everybody loved him. friends are still in shock visiting the intersection at mirada road where jimenez was

killed in a crash with a pickup truck around 5:45 p.m. saturday. >> just wanted to come down and officially pay my respects. >> jimenez was the leader of a close knit motorcycle group bonded by a love for rides and the open road. >> he's the one guy to go next to you. like, check out your bike with you. talk about your dyna, talk about his. >> on monday, a san mateo county sheriff's investigator surveyed the crash site, taking additional measurements and analyzing the roadway. joaquin's father says his son had been in san francisco with his girlfriend, nancy, and was returning to half moon bay when a pickup truck collided with his motorcycle. the shock spread through half moon bay at city hall, the city council said in a statement that joaquin was a union stationary engineer in san francisco who loved photography. his father, mayor joaquin jimenez, is the first mexican born mayor of half moon bay who helped the city through last year's tragic mass shooting that hurt the migrant farm worker. community friends say joaquin had been planning an upcoming ride to los angeles for a

motorcycle show. >> he was one of the, you know, important leaders of the group. and, yeah, we were looking forward to it. but guess we just have to ride for him. you know, moving forward. >> you know, when you're riding next to somebody, you know, for like seven, eight hours a day and then, not there the next day, you know? so it's just tough. >> funeral preparations are still being made, and some friends say that they hope officials will take another look at this intersection. reason for traffic safety in half moon bay. gianna katayama ktvu, fox two news hundreds of people honored the fallen in the ceremony at the san francisco national cemetery in the presidio this morning. >> those taking part included congresswoman nancy pelosi, many veterans and their families also attended the event, the former house speaker telling the crowd that we all owe a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices of u.s. troops who lost their lives in service. >> we have to work together to

come together for one nation, one destiny, to honor the vision of our founders, of our children and the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. >> before the ceremony, scouts from across the bay area placed an estimated 30,000 flags on the graves at the presidio and on the peninsula. people of hillsborough honored memorial day with a parade. residents filled the streets as bands, organizations, and members of the community moved along the parade route. celebration continued with music festival and a carnival and mill valley. the memorial day observations included plenty of community pride. young volunteers served up a pancake breakfast and took time to appreciate the liberties that sometimes are taken for granted. near the downtown square, students participated in a newer tradition, telling stories in poetry form of how they interpret memorial day

americans that we honor on memorial day are men and women in the military that lost their lives in battle or military training. >> it's our way to give back to the community, have a great opportunity to meet and collaborate and talk with our community members and really pay some homage to those that have served for our freedom. >> the event wrapped up with the city's annual parade in alameda. the uss hornet hosted its annual memorial day observance. people gathered aboard the world war two aircraft carrier to pay tribute to the fallen. they also heard stories of the men and women who gave their lives fighting for our freedom. speakers included marine veteran and surgeon doctor michael baker , who served 30 years in uniform, an oakland fire. crews are investigating the cause of a four alarm fire that started last night at a lumber yard. the fire started at 745 yesterday evening at the economy lumber warehouse on high street near interstate eight. 80. crews were able to keep it contained to one building, but the warehouse was destroyed. and while the fire is

out, the air quality remains a concern. no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported and new. at 730, a plane full of passengers who were headed to sfo today are facing major delays after their plane suffered a mechanical problem. the virgin atlantic boeing 787 dreamliner took off from heathrow this morning and had just crossed over iceland when it turned around due to a cracked windshield. it's unclear how long those sfo board bound passengers will be on the ground, virginia atlantic said in a statement, saying the captain decided to return to london as a precaution and that the airline is working to get the passengers back on a plane as quickly as possible and the sports world is mourning tonight. basketball hall of famer turned iconic broadcaster bill walton died today following a battle with cancer. walton was one of the most decorated college basketball players of all time. the hall of famer

helped to lead ucla to ncaa titles in 1992 and 1973, 1972 and 1973. he was the nba mvp in the 1977, 1978 season with the portland trail blazers. he was also known as a passionate alum with a larger than life personality who loved being around the players. walton later had a successful career as a broadcaster. walton is survived by his wife of 33 years, four sons and three grandchildren. he was 71 years old. warriors head coach steve kerr released this statement. big bill walton was a legendary player, a hilarious, colorful broadcaster, and most of all, a wonderful person. his incredible energy, passion, love and zest for life was never turned off. our hearts are broken today as we mourn bill's passing and grieve with his family. an athlete from walnut creek is headed to the paris olympics. this summer. as ktvu alice wurtz tells us, wrestling is a historically underrepresented sport for

women. but for this young woman, going is going for the gold. oh my gosh, it's a dream come true. >> i've wanted to go to the olympics ever since i can remember, ever since i started wrestling. and so it's still hard to believe. >> amy eiler grew up in walnut creek. at 20 years old, she's a powerhouse in her sport with demonstrated passion and strength as a wrestler. >> in the past two years, i have won three world championships in 2022, i qualified for my first senior world championship, which is the official wrestling world championship. no age restrictions and for me, that was kind of like jumping into unknown territory. >> since he was four years old, she's wrestled the youngest of six. her father was an athlete, as some of her siblings growing up. >> i also played a lot of other sports. my siblings played a bunch of sports. we are a family of sports and of trying a whole bunch of different things and pursuing our goals. >> wrestling is historically a male sport and allure has endured the knocks. >> i've heard all sorts of things for a while. i was

embarrassed of it. i would tell my friends that i wrestle and they would think that it's wwe. they would ask, what's your costume? or your what's your stage name? and i was like, no, it's an actual sport. >> none of it has deterred her or diminished her dream. >> a lot of times i would tell friends about it and they would make fun of me, say, it's gross. wrestlers are stinky, wrestlers are stupid. i've heard all sorts of things, and so i've constantly wanted to prove them wrong and, continue to pursue it no matter what they said. >> she'll go to paris for the opening ceremonies, then head to normandy for training with her team, then back to paris for her competition. >> i'm excited to see paris. i'm excited to be in the opening ceremonies, which sounds crazy. it looks like this year we're going to be on boats down a river, which is really cool. >> her advice to anyone with a dream don't be afraid to dream big, right? >> i used to tell people that i wanted to become an olympic champion, and i almost felt embarrassed. i felt like i was crazy to even think or dream of that. but here i am, so close to

in emeryville. you can see there's some traffic that one direction triple-a estimates nearly 40 million people will travel by road this weekend, a 4% increase over last year. memorial day weekend can be a particularly dangerous time to be on the road. this weekend, the chp instituted its maximum enforcement period, where more officers are brought in to patrol the roads and keep them safe. last memorial day holiday weekend, the chp made more than 1100 dui arrests and 46 people were killed in crashes across the state. this maximum period ends tonight at midnight. a record number of travelers flew in and out of u.s. airports ahead of memorial day weekend. this is a live look at sfo, the transportation security administration says nearly 3 million people pass through checkpoints on friday. that's the most screenings in a single day nationwide, beating the previous record set last

thanksgiving. travel experts see it as a sign we're in for a busy travel season this summer and new. at 730, the san rafael fire department has hired a new chief, abraham roman previously served as the department's deputy chief of operation and most recently was interim chief roman is a 38 year veteran of the fire department, having served 24 of those years with the berkeley fire department. roman will serve as the chief for both san rafael and marinwood departments. >> across the bay area this afternoon, temperatures a little bit warmer compared to yesterday, but the clouds are already rolling back. do expect us to be a tad cooler for tomorrow and then a bit of a warm up as we head into the second part of the business week. a live look here over the golden gate bridge. a lot of cloud cover along the coastline and near the bridge. the entire day. the onshore breeze turned on this afternoon and cooled things down awfully quickly. here's a look at storm tracker two. we have the clouds along the coast inside the bay,

stretching over towards the east bay, and by tomorrow morning i expect we will have clouds fairly wide spread has to do with this system here that will be moving into the pacific northwest, bringing even some rain to washington, oregon and the intermountain west for us. no rain, but we are expected again to cool down just some. here's a look at the future cast. there's a look at tomorrow afternoon. notice the trough there as we head in towards sunset, which happens to be right about 822 these days. this is going to be the pattern tuesday, and then by wednesday into thursday, a ridge builds back in. notice it parked right over here and now over the west. that will bring our temperatures up for the back end of the business week. only to have temperatures cool once again heading into the weekend. here's a look at friday into saturday. saturday afternoon. notice the trough? it is back once again, so sort of a minor up and down with the roller coaster with the temperatures. nothing too dramatic though. we're going to get into some warmer weather for

especially our inland cities. and i'll show you those numbers in the extended forecast around the bay area at this hour. 52 at half moon bay, 53, san francisco a cool one with clouds. the onshore breeze out there joining us as well. 61 in napa go to the inner east bay still very mild for some areas like brentwood and concord. you may even still be enjoying the festivities outdoors. those backyard barbecues and such. tomorrow morning a little bit of a cool start. upper 40s to start the day in santa rosa. 50 for san francisco, 51 in fremont, and we get into the afternoon. temperatures are going to be a little bit below average for most low 60s expected in san francisco, upper 60s in oakland, we'll go 76 in livermore and 73 for san jose, 79 in the north bay of santa rosa. that will be one of the warmer spots for tomorrow. 76 in areas over concord and then closer to the bay. widespread 60s, upper 60s in hayward as well as san mateo. your extended forecast here. temperatures again, cooling off just a little bit for tomorrow

and state grants as part of california's statewide crackdown on wage theft. the state department of industrial relations says the money will

help fund local law enforcement programs targeting companies that routinely cheat when paying their employees. the grant money will also help fund investigations into allegations of illegal and unfair business practices. in the alameda county board of supervisors is set to consider whether to place civilian oversight over the sheriff's office if approved, the oversight board would consist of seven citizens. they would request information, hold hearings, and make recommendations to the board of supervisors, community members have been pushing for some type of oversight for years. it advocates point to the high in-custody death rate at santa rita jail, which stands at nearly 70 over the past ten years. >> i personally feel that as citizens, we it is our duty to be vocal and advocate for those that are not able to advocate for themselves. a lot of, like my son, some people are experiencing mental illness now. >> two points of contention are whether investigations would

have to get the green light from the sheriff, and whether the commission would have to have its own legal counsel, the board of supervisors is set to take up the issue on june 4th, and caltrans is planning a partial lane closures this weekend on the bay bridge in both directions for safety test and fire drill. first responders on sunday will be on site testing the new yerba buena island tunnel fire sprinkler system from five in the morning until noon. two lanes will remain open. caltrans is urging drivers using the bridge to allow for extra time. more than 1200 volunteers are working on san jose's newest piece of public art this week. it's called threads woven, and it's a massive mural near san pedro square. the artist jimmy paints said the inspiration was a serape blanket and the diversity of san jose. hundreds of volunteers are scheduled each day to paint the mural. earlier this year, city officials decided to keep this section of the street closed to traffic and local businesses hope this mural will be a draw.

says raccoons chased the puppy off a cliff in the potrero hill neighborhood. luckily the pup did not have any injuries. after the fall, fire crews used a rope to get it back to safety. the puppy has since been reunited with its human companion. and stanford is going to the women's college softball world series. stanford beat lsu eight to nothing yesterday to win the super regional and advance to the series in oklahoma city. stanford will take on the top ranked softball team in the country, texas longhorns, on thursday in a double elimination tournament. and the annual bottlerock music festival in napa valley now officially wrapped after a closing headline performance from ed sheeran. daca acenas rolling field and so long have no, i don't. the grammy winning artist even made a surprise appearance a few hours before his set, coming on stage to perform with rock band the offspring. other big name performances yesterday included
