window. so we'll see what they can do jason thank you. >> next at 11, for the first time in history, a former president convicted of a felony, what donald trump's guilty verdict means for the upcoming election. >> plus, we had to change it up last minute. we came here on like, tuesday. they told us, i think last last week that they had to change the hotel. >> unexpected issues for a popular hotel in the heart of san jose, forcing it to close temporarily. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> the hotel de anza will be closed for several weeks because of unexpected maintenance issues. hello again everyone. >> i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. it's closure comes right as the summer season kicks off, forcing its current guest to relocate to hotels in the nearby area. new at 11 ktvu, lamonica peters spoke with some of those guests and how the closure affected their plans to closing down the hotel. >> de anza is obviously a necessity to keep visitors safe, but we encourage all visitors to still come out to san jose. >> hotel de anza posted a notice

on its website notifying customers about unexpected maintenance, causing them to suspend normal operations until june 16th. hotel management released a statement saying in part, the safety and well-being of our guests and colleagues is always a top priority. we continue to extend care to all colleagues and guests, and the hotel is continuing to waive cancellation fees at this time. just outside hotel de anza, an internship group told us they had plans to stay there this week, but we're told by the hotel they'd have to stay someplace else. >> i'm going to work in san francisco, so i'm staying in san jose for onboarding. just this week, we were supposed to stay here at hotel de anza. not how you say it, looks beautiful, but unfortunately, there was a bit of a flooding issue last minute. very unfortunate, don't know much about it, but hopefully i'm able to stay here another night. >> they usually do work with this hotel, but they figured it all out for us, so i'm assuming the hotel kind of like redirected them, told them where

to go and because they had to house like about 1919 of us. so they were able to find a place pretty quick with multiple hotels downtown. >> visit san jose, san jose's official visitors agency says other hotels are ready to accommodate those with canceled reservations and any other visitors. >> we have other downtown hotel options, including the ac hotel, literally across the street and then in the downtown corridor, there is hilton marriott signia, four points and even the westin hotel de anza says guests with questions regarding their upcoming stay can call hyatt customer care. >> lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> tomorrow, a judge in santa clara county is scheduled to decide whether to overturn the death sentence of richard allen davis. davis was convicted and sentenced to be executed in 1996 for the kidnaping and murder of 12 year old polly klaas in petaluma. his lawyers say a recent criminal justice reform law that invalidated certain

sentencing enhancements now entitles davis to have his sentence reconsidered. >> new video shows the moment a man was attacked at a san jose vta platform. the santa clara county sheriff's office released this video showing what appears to be an unprovoked attack. authorities say. the video shows 26 year old andrew perez repeatedly punching the victim. it happened on the platform of vta children's discovery museum station in san jose at about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. perez goes on to stab the 45 year old victim repeatedly with an unknown object. the victim is expected to survive, but sustained a large cut that required seven staples. authorities say. perez then took off from the vta platform after the attack and barricaded himself inside a home. he was arrested after a standoff with police. he is now facing a number of charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon for the first time, a former us president has been convicted of a felony. >> a jury in new york city found

donald trump guilty of 34 counts related to falsifying business records, and a scheme to try to influence the 2016 election. ktvu zac sos joins us here in studio with the story. >> zach and donald trump's legal team already laying out the groundwork for an appeal. and while the verdict won't impact his ability to run in 2024, he's now being forced to hit the campaign trail with legal baggage like no other former american president tagged with felony convictions. >> their deliberations led them to a unanimous conclusion that the defendant, donald j. trump, is guilty. >> manhattan da alvin bragg, addressing reporters thursday at the conclusion of a historic trial ending with donald trump becoming the first former american president to be convicted of felony crimes. >> a new york jury finding him guilty of all 34 charges he faced in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to adult film actor stormy daniels.

>> while this defendant may be unlike any other in american history, we arrived at this trial and ultimately today at this verdict in the same manner as every other case that comes through the courtroom doors, the former president sitting stone faced as the verdict was read aloud. >> it's the first of four criminal cases involving trump to reach a conclusion. he faces three other felony indictments in florida, georgia and washington, d.c. trump, addressing the media as court let out. >> i think it's just a disgrace. and we'll keep fighting. we'll fight till the end and we'll win . >> the jury hearing more than four weeks of testimony, including from the prosecutors, key witness michael cohen, who helped orchestrate a $130,000 payment to daniels in the days before the 2016 election. >> they reviewed call logs, text messages and emails. >> trump, who continues to steadfastly deny an affair with

commenting on the trial this afternoon, the biden-harris campaign released a statement saying in part, donald trump has always mistakenly believed he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain. but today's verdict does not change the fact that the american people face a simple reality. there's still only one way to keep donald trump out of the oval office. at the ballot box, the speaker of the house had a different take on the verdict, republican mike johnson saying on nbc's today is a shameful day in american history. democrats cheered as they convicted the leader of the opposing party on ridiculous charges predicated on the testimony of a disbarred, convicted felon. this was a purely political exercise, not a legal one. >> bay area experts are weighing in on the verdict and whether mr. trump will serve prison time . as we mentioned, mr. trump's legal team has said it plans to appeal the verdict. but uc college of the law professor david levine, tells us mr. trump's legal team needs to be careful with the different possible steps for an appeal

potentially spanning years. >> if he's in the white house, i think what would happen is that the sentence would effectively be suspended and then he wouldn't actually serve it until after his time in the white house is over. >> also tonight, our political analyst, brian sobel spoke about what the verdict means for the november election. >> no americans should be happy about what happened today. i don't care what your political allegiance is. this is not you know, a banana republic. we do not want to see a succession of these kinds of things happening. >> mr. trump's sentencing date is set for july 11th, just four days before the republican national convention. >> reaction to trump's verdict has been filtering in really throughout the day, and some bay area residents saying it was disappointing to hear the final verdict. >> i can say i wasn't shocked, but i was disappointed because i think it's just an absolute tragedy or just a travesty of justice. >> other residents say they support the jury's verdict and

a 21 year old angela maher was hit and killed by a drunk driver, and police say gloria schultz was the one driving under the influence. and right before her court date, she fled and was never found. scottsdale police recently learned that schultz had been living in the small canadian town of

yellowknife. she had been going by the name kate dooley, and this week, a family member of schultz's told investigators they received an anonymous phone call informing them that the suspect, gloria schultz, had recently died in canada in seattle, a series of armed robberies on the campus of the university of washington has students on edge. >> the first incident happened last friday. two men armed with a gun grabbed a person and tried to steal the victim's phone. three days later, two men threatened to shoot a victim if they did not give up their cell phone in that same area. university police believe the same suspect are involved. these violent incidents come about two weeks after another series of robberies. students there are now urging police to increase security on campus as the end of the semester is just days away. >> and in yolo county, a beloved bronze statue of a horse has been missing. now, for weeks, and tonight the reward has been doubled to $10,000 for anyone who can find it. the 10 to 12 foot bronze horse statue has been right off highway 113, in

woodland since 2016. it helped to welcome visitors to willow creek horse park, a space dedicated to boarding horses and lessons on horseback riding. the owner of the facility says the statue, valued at $50,000, was a gift from the landlord of the property for kids that wanted to do lessons, or even the friends that just wanted to come out and see the horses and i'd let them know, you know, there's the big old statue right in front of the facility. >> you can't miss that. >> the yolo county sheriff's office says the theft is considered a felony because of the value of that statue, and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. >> west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find around the clock coverage at west coast wrap.com. well, new tonight a burglary at a san francisco restaurant forced it to delay its grand opening. it was set to open just 36 hours after the crime. >> ktvu s bailey o'carroll spoke with the owner and has surveillance video of the break

in. >> you're definitely shocked the first day like you like this happened to you less than a week ago, before his restaurant even served their first guest, george howaniec mediterranean japanese fusion restaurant zybach was hit by burglars. this is exactly where they came in from, forcing them to push back their grand opening. as i've said before, this just fuels me. i'm not going to let something like this affect us. and because i do believe in a trickle down effect as well. and i'm not just saying that this is security cam footage captured from inside zybach on gough street in hayes valley. >> the burglars broke in early tuesday morning, the same day the restaurant was slated for a soft opening. >> no idea what the system was, what their you know, what, what they were thinking. you know, we found out that they stole two hand-held, toast, machines, you know, like the servers carry on. >> in the video, you can see a group of people dressed in dark

colors wearing hoods, some with masks to cover their face. the group loaded up duffel bags and even a recology bin full of almost every bottle of alcohol from the bar and odds and ends, including sugar packets and a single set of silverware. >> they took all of these. there's just one left over that we had for something else. i it it makes no sense. >> he's thankful the burglars didn't destroy anything inside and plans on filing an insurance claim, but says even that is no guarantee. >> yeah, we're going to file a claim because this is just too big. insurance is insurance, and we know what's going on with the state of california. >> but howaniec choosing to look at the positive side. >> it just doesn't add up. we are thankful they didn't do any property damage. so it's just inventory, inventory, small wares and tools. >> well, the burglars wiped out and took nearly every bottle of alcohol from the bar inside zybach. you can see there again estimated more than $20,000 worth of equipment and alcohol were taken. the new opening date for this restaurant is june fifth next week. the owner says that he is excited for that new

jose was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $13,000 in restitution for three counts of arson on federal property in, investigators say. maynard said a series of fires in the shasta trinity national forest blocking firefighters from responding to the dixie fire in 2021. that fire burned more than 950,000 acres and resulted in the death of a firefighter, a beloved public market in castro valley is in ruins after a fire tore through the building early this morning. >> that fire was reported at about 2:20 a.m. at lake chabot public market and it quickly overtook the building. alameda county fire crews were still putting water onto hot spots by daybreak. the marketplace was known to the community as a place to grab anything from ramen to ice cream and korean barbecue. the fire seemed to have started from mama cho's barbecue inside the market. we heard from the owner of that business, who also owns the building. >> just a lot of emotions going

through my mind as far as next steps, immediate steps. >> it's a really sad because this place is always super busy. it's real close to like the hiking trails in lake chabot, so it's kind of like a staple of the community here. >> the exact cause is under investigation, but fire officials say the fire was fed by a gas line. >> all right, time now to check in with chief meteorologist bill martin. the weekend knocking on the door. >> yeah. and it was it was hot today inland like it was hot. it was i felt it depending where you were. but inland spots were pretty hot. now it cools off tomorrow and then saturday. and sunday subsequently dropped down in temperatures too. so the trend is for cooler air outside we go. live camera shot, no fog. i think tomorrow night they'll be fog in this shot. but not tonight, as you can see, i think the fog gets back here tomorrow night. most of it's down south. the point conception, kind of trying to figure out the red top on the salesforce. we didn't. we couldn't get a word on that yet. but it's so, so beautiful. i love how they can change that thing and make it anything they

want, the temperatures from today, here they are, 93, in fairfield. that was one of the warm spots, 92 in antioch. these temperatures from today subtract five degrees. and that's where we go tomorrow. so san francisco is in the mid and low 60s tomorrow. today was the top of the temperature spike in the bell curve, if you will. and then temperatures trend down friday and saturday. is it cold? no. but it's just not going to be 92. those 90 twos fast forward into saturday. those turn into 80 fives. subtle. it's not a big deal, but it's definitely cooler. the marine layer or the marine air, the onshore flow. you can see the greens pushing inland. still pretty warm. brentwood 76 right now 73, in concord. but that will change tomorrow. at this time tomorrow night, this fog. there it is. tomorrow morning shows it's coming. work its way up the coast. it comes back in tomorrow night and then on saturday morning, and then on sunday or saturday night, and then on sunday morning. and that's all the big cooldown. you

kind of saw those clouds wafting over the top of the marine layer. that's that robust onshore flow from the weather system to the north that is going to just tweak the inversion enough that the onshore flow increases and we cool down. so it's just it's classic summer pattern 89 in fairfield tomorrow, 89 in antioch. those will be the warmest spots. might be a little cooler than that, especially if the fog gets here by tomorrow morning, but i don't i don't think it's going to get here by tomorrow morning. the five day forecast there it is. and you can see that we've got a little bit of everything going on. but it definitely i think the thing to note here is that tuesday number i know you don't care. it's the weekend but tuesday is going to start heating up again. so we're going to be looking at some very warm weather inland next week. >> all right bill thank you. the san francisco sheriff says his department has paused training with chemical agents after gas from a recent exercise affected students at a nearby elementary school. two dozen students and staff members at portola elementary school say they experienced reactions. this was back on may 21st. the sheriff

says it happened during scheduled training in which people are exposed to chemical agents and then asked to perform certain functions. the department typically uses older canisters for training, and these may have been ten, even 20 years old. >> in this particular case, it was not something out of the ordinary that we do, but it is something now in hindsight that we are reassessing how we do training and moving forward will definitely reassure and make sure that this doesn't happen again. >> the sheriff went on to say a large number of canisters were used during the training in a confined environment. he says the gas likely escaped when they vented the trailer that was used. one parent says their child experienced pretty severe symptoms. >> initially, a sore throat, runny nose, burning eyes but then they had post exposure symptoms 24 hours later, which included kind of a continuous vomiting over the course of like 11 hours, like every four hours. he was getting sick.

transforming a vacant lot into a vibrant community park. here is a look at the plan, showing what the new ashland zocalo park will offer. it is scheduled for a grand opening in just two weeks on june 13th. the park will provide play spaces for children as well as an exercise corner and walking loop. there will also be a new lawn in front of a permanent stage for community events. >> the berryessa snow mountain national monument on our north coast is now officially expanded

. senator alex padilla, north bay congressman mike thompson and tribal leaders signed a coast stewardship agreement today. earlier this month, president biden announced that 13,000 acre expansion of the land, which is considered significant to tribal nations. padilla and thompson say the expansion card generations of tribal stories protect wildlife and the rich. bio diversity in the region. >> everybody came together knowing this was the right thing to do, and it was an important thing to do, and all you have to do is look at the landscapes or think about the wildflowers or the wildlife that is there. it all becomes very, very obvious. the berryessa snow mountain national monument covers more than 344,000 acres in parts of napa, yolo, solano, lake, colusa, glenn and mendocino counties. >> new at 11. the 80th anniversary of d-day is

approaching on june 6th, and an east bay veteran is flying to normandy, france to commemorate the anniversary. oakland resident and vet staff sergeant jake m larson, lovingly known as papa jake, is one of the 50 veterans delta airlines is flying to france. now at just 15 years old, staff sergeant jake lied about his age in 1938 to join the national guard. he was sent overseas in 1942, where he then landed on omaha beach and survived the invasion of normandy. >> i've been back five, five times in the past four years. honoring all those souls that gave their life so that i could make it. >> the private aviation company wheels up. will fly. papa jake and another west coast vet to
