reports that animal advocates are taking some credit for the closure. >> the industry of horse racing is not worth a single moment of cruelty. >> samantha fay rides and trains horses and her great grandfather, second from the right, was albany mayor. when golden gate fields first opened. although the track has been a key part of her family's history, fay says she's grateful it's closing on sunday. >> these horses, while they're still babies, are overworked, but they're stabled for nearly 24 hours a day and they are coming off the track traumatized on friday, as we conducted interviews, word of another horse dying just hours earlier, the seventh fatality at golden gate fields this year. >> the animal was named sam spade after the detective. >> it's kind of a mystery. we don't know exactly what's happened. all we know is that it didn't happen to him while he was racing. and he's an unraced two year old. >> martha sullivan is an organizer with kill racing, not horses. she says the track's closure has to do with financial reasons as well as pressure from

animal advocacy groups. >> i think it's a combination. i think it's people are less interested in risking and taking horses live just to gamble. >> it's a sad day. after 83 years, that golden gate fields is coming to an end. >> david dugan, the track's general manager, says they're consolidating with santa anita, the racetrack in southern california. he said friday's horse death was related to an internal issue, with the horse not linked to racing or training. despite the best efforts of our excellent veterinary team here, we weren't able to reverse that process that had set in. dugan said the track did not give in to animal rights advocates like these, who chain themselves together across the track. >> back in 2021, that wasn't a factor in the decision to close. >> horse racing fans are making their final visits. >> it's been here for 80 years. it's kind of an end of an era. i think maybe a lot of it is because people do mobile betting now, and the last few times i've been here, the grandstands have

been so empty here on closing weekend, my thoughts and my heart are with the horses that we weren't able to save. >> still unclear what exactly will happen to this 140 acre property along the bay. the stables are in berkley's jurisdiction, and the actual track in albany could be turned into housing or a park, either way, the remaining horses will be transferred to the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton in albany. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> now to the latest developments in santa clara, where el camino real between calabasas and keeley has just reopened after an investigation into a suspicious package. it was reported by a community member just before 3:00 this afternoon. out of an abundance of caution, santa clara pd requested assistance from county sheriff's office bomb squad. a robot came and examined the object and determined it did not pose any threat to public safety. >> traffic is moving again in the eastbound direction on 580 in san leandro, after an overturned army vehicle caused a major backup sky fox was overhead that accident this afternoon around 3:00, and you can see that 25 foot long truck

right on its side. soldiers standing on the shoulder of the freeway. no injuries were reported, but the accident did force the closure of two lanes around 330, that truck was finally lifted back up and all lanes were reopened within the last hour. >> a san jose woman is in jail tonight on suspicion of murdering a man. earlier this week, police say sylvia ortega stabbed a man on sunday near the area of north 17th street and east santa clara street. the motive and what led up to the incident still being investigated, and the victim's identity has not yet been released. >> new at six san francisco police have released surveillance video of a person of interest in the investigation into racist threats against a dog walker. the video here shows what appears to be a black man wearing black clothing and carrying a brown bag walking down a city street. it was taken around the time terry williams reported receiving several threats near his home, including a voodoo doll depicting a black person with a noose around their neck. then last month, there was a fire at williams home, though

it's not clear whether those incidents are connected. police have not identified the person in that video as a suspect in their case, but they are asking anyone who might recognize this person to come forward. >> markets ending the week higher today following a stronger than expected jobs report, all three major indices were up for the week, even as the dow slipped 87 points, the nasdaq fell 40 and the s&p dropped six. the latest data is showing better than expected results. ktvu tom vacar reports with a look at the numbers through the eyes of a true labor expert who's been in the employment law profession for more than four decades. >> the u.s. job count increased by another 272,000 jobs last month. that's way more than the 180,000 that had been forecast. and well above the recent running average of 232,000 a month. >> at the same time, i think it's important to note, the main sectors of job growth nationwide

continue to be ones connected to government spending, employment lawyer and former edd director michael bernick cautions that health care, social services and direct government jobs account for 46% of the new jobs. >> much of it driven by tax money. >> private sector, construction, manufacturing, showed modest, far more modest gains. nonetheless yes, the total national unemployment rate ticked up a notch to 4, still low by the, standards of the past half century, but above the 3.7% we had a year ago in may 2023. >> wages compared to a year ago are 4.1% higher. but stubborn inflation at 3.4% eats up most of that. >> and i think that explains why polling shows most most americans disagree, or at least

very worried. >> the number of posted job listings has come down a bit to 8.1 million, but still well above pre-pandemic numbers. >> but it's well below what we were two years ago in may 2022, which was 11.7 million. >> the number of people voluntarily leaving their jobs, as opposed to being fired or laid off, is also down to 3.5 million. also so well above pre-pandemic levels. what we know about the quits rate is that it reflects a lot the confidence people have in the economy, the confidence they can get other jobs. all of that seems hopeful and manageable. but here is what is not declining consumer spending. >> declining retail spending, declining industrial production. as well as this, stubbornly high inflation rate, all these negatives suggest a future flattening growth in jobs suggests, as we've seen in the

past, tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> new at six. the biden administration is tightening the fuel mileage standards for automakers by 2031, all new vehicles sold in the u.s. will have to average at least 38 miles per gallon. the current standard is about 29 miles. the move is part of a long term strategy by the white house to try and convince automakers to produce more electric vehicles, experts say. gas powered vehicles are one of the leading contributors of climate change. >> a long awaited project to improve connections between vta light rail and bart is breaking ground in san jose tomorrow. the light rail extension will connect vta riders from the east ridge station directly to bart at the milpitas station. the construction is expected to be completed in 2028. vta and elected leaders are inviting the public to celebrate the beginning of construction with a resource fair, food and music. the celebration gets underway tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the eastridge transit center. >> an update now on a story we

brought you earlier this week in east oakland of a half finished street repaving project. a resident in the sobrante park neighborhood sent us this video of a construction crew repaving their street, finishing the job another crew abandoned due to safety concerns. oakland public works confirmed that the initial contractor was forced to pull out last month after one worker was threatened with a gun and another was hit by a car. neighbors said the half finished streets were filled with giant potholes that posed a safety and health hazard. a busy week for firefighters in the bay area coming up, the latest on a new brush fire in the east bay. >> across the bay area for the weekend, temperatures will be on the decline. the breezy conditions continue, however, i'll have a look at the current conditions and what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. >> and he has made global headlines after leading the american cricket team to victory in one of the sport's biggest upsets. but it's not even his full time job. after the break, we'll talk with the oracle software engineer about his

this week battling multiple grass fires and today was no exception. sky fox was overhead a brush fire at albers court in deer valley road in brentwood. cal fire says it burned about 50 acres in a rural area before crews on the ground and in the air got a handle on those flames. more than 60 firefighters worked to contain the fire. no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. crews remained on scene this afternoon to monitor for hot spots. firefighters say it is a vast area covered with tall, dense and dry grasses that could ignite from just one single spark is what we call flashy fuels. >> it doesn't take much to preheat them, which means that they can light off very quickly, and they can also take off and run depending on the wind. so we make sure that, once we get there, we wanted to we want to put it out rather quickly before it starts running. >> four days ago, cal fire reported that since the beginning of the year, they fought more than 1200 wildfires. today, that number is at about

1500, a pace of 68 new wildfires every day in the last four days. >> state regulators are considering new rules which would not only protect workers from extreme heat, it would also extend to school children. the proposed standards would require indoor workplaces to be cooled below 87 degrees and below 82, in places where workers wear protective clothing or are exposed to radiant heat, schools and other work sites that don't have air conditioning would be required to use fans, misters and other methods to bring the room temperature down. cal osha is set to vote on those rules june 20th, and they could take effect this summer. >> well, here in the bay area, the heat has moved out and we do have a cooler pattern in place for your weekend. if you wanted the heat to stick around, it'll be back. i'll show you that in the extended forecast. here's a look at sfo, where we do have low clouds already returning into the bay. we have mid and high level clouds that will be joining us as well. a look at the afternoon highs from today.

a cool one in pacifica at 60 degrees. low 60s in san francisco, 70s and low 80s around the bay. beautiful weather for most of our bayside communities in our inland areas. enjoying 80s instead of 90s 83 in concord this afternoon, 82 in santa rosa. and at this hour, temperatures are down by 15 degrees in concord, nice relief for you there in the north bay. down by 12 over santa rosa, around the bay, some of us a little bit cooler. some of us actually a little bit warmer right now. upper 50s reported in san francisco, mid 60s in oakland where we have the a's playing a little bit later, 85 in brentwood, still very warm for some of our inland cities. how about the north bay? we'll take a look at a few more numbers. 71 in novato right now on the peninsula, a beautiful 80 at atherton and the inner east bay, where we have had some of our hotter temperatures. 72 in danville, 75 right now in clayton, the winds are on the breeze through fairfield, gusting to 33mph. napa reporting 31. oakland gusting to 30. that onshore breeze will begin to wind down just a little bit as

this after he reportedly raised $12 million at last night's event in san francisco. the high dollar fundraiser, hosted by venture capitalist david sax and reportedly attended by other silicon valley investors with hundreds of protesters and supporters lining the streets of the pacific heights neighborhood , this is trump's first fundraising tour after he was convicted of 34 felonies in new york. he is set to hold an event in newport beach this weekend. president biden is still overseas tonight after marking 80 years since d-day. today, he met with his ukrainian counterpart in paris, where he apologized for delaying funding to ukraine. as the war with russia continues. >> we had trouble getting the bill that we had to pass, had the money in it. some some of

24th. >> no word yet on whether he will meet with president biden during the visit in london. greg palkot, fox news. >> new at six the fbi has released nearly 500 pages of documents related to oj simpson. the documents largely focused on the murder investigation into the 1994 stabbing deaths of nicole brown simpson and ronald goldman. simpson, who died earlier this year, was charged with and acquitted of their deaths. the documents include details on the evidence collected in dna tested. they also reveal federal agents went to italy to study a rare shoe that was determined at the time to be worn by the murderer. it is typical of the fbi to release records it maintains on people after they die. mark fuhrman, the former l.a. detective who was convicted of lying on the witness stand in the oj simpson trial, has been barred from ever serving in law enforcement again . his decertification comes under a state police reform law that took effect last year. the move is largely symbolic, as

to issue same sex marriage licenses in defiance of state and federal law. >> today, now, governor newsom joined lgbtq plus leaders to promote a measure reaffirming same sex marriage in the state as ktvu christien kafton reports. >> voters will decide this november whether to enshrine marriage equality in the state constitution. >> california has had a back and forth relationship with same sex marriage since san francisco began marrying couples in 2004. in 2008, voters passed proposition eight, changing the state constitution to block same sex marriage. the united states supreme court decision in 2013 made that amendment obsolete, but it's still there. now, state assemblyman evan low from the south bay and san francisco senator scott wiener have co-written assembly, constitution amendment five, which californians will vote on in november. the amendment removes the provisions opposing same sex marriage from the constitution once and for all. >> it's sort of seen as quote unquote, zombie language, but the fact of the matter is, given where the direction of the united states supreme court is that provides the impetus and

the sense of urgency to say that we need to preempt this. >> the amendment has already cleared the necessary legislative hurdles and has the backing of governor gavin newsom, who worries that shifting national political tides could undo marriage equality. >> look what's happening. all these red states to voting rights, civil rights, lgbtq rights. look what's happened to women's rights, not just access to abortion, but the debate we're having today about access to contraception. this is real. >> married couples in san francisco say the battle for equality is a constant struggle, and say they will support the measure in the fall. >> absolutely. it means everything to me. i'm, you know, marriage equality should be across the nation. so if it's not enshrined in our constitution here in california, which we get looked at often for , it definitely needs to be. >> ron bacon and john cooper say after more than 30 years together, they've had to go back and forth to get married and stay married. >> he and i have been married three times because of the law. >> they say they'll vote to
