the final horse races will be held this weekend. >> plus, that's what this initiative represents. it's a recognition again of the urgency of the moment as people start to celebrate pride month. >> governor newsom, stepping up his support for a ballot measure called the freedom to marry. >> this is ktvu fox two news at
7:31 pm
730. >> and that initiative would enshrine the right to same sex marriage in the california constitution. thanks so much for joining me on this friday night. i'm heather holmes. that measure will go before voters in november. and when newsom was san francisco mayor back in 2004, you may remember he presided over the very first same sex marriages in california during what was called the winter of love, our christian captain tells us as governor, newsom promises to do whatever he can to ensure marriage equality. >> california has had a back and forth relationship with same sex marriage since san francisco began marrying couples in 2004. in 2008, voters passed proposition eight, changing the state constitution to block same sex marriage. the united states supreme court decision in 2013 made that amendment obsolete, but it's still there now. state assemblyman evan low from the south bay and san francisco senator scott wiener have co-written assembly constitutional amendment five, which californians will vote on in november. the amendment
7:32 pm
removes the provisions opposing same sex marriage from the constitution once and for all. >> it's sort of seen as quote unquote, zombie language, but the fact of the matter is, given where the direction of the united states supreme court is that provides the impetus and the sense of urgency to say that we need to preempt this. >> the amendment has already cleared the necessary legislative hurdles and has the backing of governor gavin newsom, who worries that shifting national political tides could undo marriage equality. >> look what's happening. all these red states to voting rights, civil rights, lgbtq rights. look what's happened to women's rights, not just access to abortion, but the debate we're having today about access to contraception. this is real. >> married couples in san francisco say the battle for equality is a constant struggle, and say they will support the measure in the fall. >> absolutely. it means everything to me. i'm, you know, marriage equality should be across the nation. so if it's not enshrined in our constitution here in california, which we get looked at often for , it definitely needs to be ron bacon and john cooper say after
7:33 pm
more than 30 years together, they've had to go back and forth to get married and stay married. >> he and i have been married three times because of the law. >> they say they'll vote to protect their rights and their marriage. >> we always believe that it should be a right for all. everybody not just straight people. >> voters will have their say. november fifth in san francisco, christien, kafton, ktvu, fox two news, san francisco mayor london breed. >> also in strong support of this measure, saying in part, quote, san francisco has always been a leader in the fight for lgbtq rights and we will continue to champion love and equality for everyone. our commitment to supporting the california right to marry and repeal the proposition eight amendment is unwavering. well beyond the celebrations. pride month is also a time to raise awareness about mental health issues facing a lot of members of the lgbtq plus community, according to data from the cdc, lgbtq plus adults are twice as
7:34 pm
likely to report they've been diagnosed with depression and nearly a third report having a poor mental health. for more insight. earlier today on the four, i spoke with joy alafia, executive director of the california association of marriage and family therapists. >> and if you're constantly having to just fight to exist and be you, that that takes a toll on one's mental health. and so this is one of the things, as marriage and family therapists, we try to make sure that we have the right supports and structure, and we really need community that's inclusive and affirming. >> lgbtq young people are also facing similar struggles when it comes to mental health, but alafia says she is hopeful to see more acceptance in the younger generations. i knew at 730 tonight, a judge in southern california has ordered the union representing university of california academic workers to temporarily halt its strike. right now, workers are picketing
7:35 pm
at six uc schools, including uc santa cruz. earlier this week, the state labor board denied uc's request to stop the strike, saying that it failed to show the labor action was causing irreparable harm to universities. as part of today's ruling, the schools have been granted a temporary restraining order against the strikers. the walkouts began a month ago in response to university crackdowns on pro-palestinian encampments. the union responded to today's ruling, saying the temporary restraining order does not mean that the strike has been ruled illegal. also to a 730 tonight, a report says employees for the city of san francisco are increasing their speed while at work. that's according to new data obtained by the san francisco standard. san francisco puts gps devices in city vehicles to track the speed of employees. the latest data available from these trackers was in april, and it shows that employees top speeds of 80mph or more, more than 1500
7:36 pm
times now. for comparison, the average number of times city employees top speeds of more than 80 miles an hour between november of 2017 and november of 2020 was 445. ktvu reached out to the city for a response, but we have yet to hear back. also in san francisco, police releasing surveillance video now of a person of interest in the investigation into racist threats against a dog walker. the video from last april shows what appears to be a man wearing black clothing and carrying a brown bag walking down a city street. this video was taken around the time that terry williams reported receiving several threats near his home, including a voodoo doll depicting a black person with a noose around their neck. then last month, there was a fire at williams home. though it's not clear whether these incidents are connected. police have not identified the person that you saw in that video as a suspect in their case, but they are asking anyone who might recognize them. here's another look to come forward. in south

san francisco, an owner has their vehicle back, but it is badly damaged and the person responsible for stealing it has yet to be arrested. the owner tells ktvu their car was parked in south san francisco when it was stolen. the owner tracked the vehicle to east oakland and found one of the windows had been broken into, and the thief had rifled all through that car. the golden gate fields horse racing track here in the east bay, closing this weekend after more than 80 years. ktvu henry lee talked to animal rights advocates who say they are glad to see the venue shut down. >> the industry of horse racing is not worth a single moment of cruelty. >> samantha fay rides and trains horses and her great grandfather, second from the right, was albany mayor. when golden gate fields first opened. although the track has been a key part of her family's history, fay says she's grateful it's closing on sunday. >> these horses, while they're still babies, are overworked, but they're stabled for nearly 24 hours a day and they are
7:38 pm
coming off the track traumatized on friday, as we conducted interviews, word of another horse dying just hours earlier, the seventh fatality at golden gate fields this year. >> the animal was named sam spade after the detective. >> it's kind of a mystery. we don't know exactly what's happened. all we know is that it didn't happen to him while he was racing. and he's an unraced two year old. >> martha sullivan is an organizer with kill racing, not horses. she says the track's closure has to do with financial reasons, as well as pressure from animal advocacy groups. >> i think it's a combination. i think it's people are less interested in risking and taking horses live just to gamble. >> and it's a sad day. after 83 years, that golden gate fields is coming to an end. >> david dugan, the track's general manager, says they're consolidating with santa anita, the racetrack in southern california. he said friday's horse death was related to an internal issue at the horse, not linked to racing or training. >> despite the best efforts of

our excellent veterinary team here, we weren't able to reverse that process that had set in, dugan said. >> the track did not give in to animal rights advocates like these, who chain themselves together across the track. >> back in 2021, that wasn't a factor in the decision to close. >> horse racing fans are making their final visits. >> it's been here for 80 years. it's kind of the end of an era. i think maybe a lot of it is because people do mobile betting now, and the last few times i've been here, the grandstands have been so empty here on closing weekend, my thoughts and my heart are with the horses that we weren't able to save. >> still unclear what exactly will happen to this 140 acre property along the bay. the stables are in berkley's jurisdiction, and the actual track in albany could be turned into housing or a park, either way, the remaining horses will be transferred to the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton in albany. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> well, we're also getting late. word that a second horse died at that track today, making it the eighth fourth horse
