of a person of interest, possibly connected to a hate crime investigation following racist threats made against the san francisco dog walker. good evening. >> i'm greg lee and i'm cristina rendon. the incident happened in late april when racist items were found at the home of the dog walker. ktvu amberleigh joining us now live after speaking with that man, amber cristina, the dog walker, tells me he and his father have faced criticism and accusations that they were lying about the racist incidents. >> he says the surveillance video released by police is vindication. san francisco police released this surveillance video of a person of interest in a hate crime investigation. investigators say they want to speak to him about racist items found on april 26th at the western edition home, where a black family lives. >> anger kicked in anger. frustration, hostility in a way.

>> terry williams says there have been several incidents where racist items have been thrown over the front gate of the home. he shares with his older parents. they include a black faced doll with a noose around the neck with racist slurs written on it, and that his family has received postcards sent by mail with racist words. he tells me people have questioned him and his 81 year old father's credibility. he feels vindicated by the release of the surveillance video, saying, me and my dad made everything up, so it's kind of like it made me feel good. >> people who i know thought i was lying, and it's sad. >> williams tells me the man captured on surveillance camera looks familiar, but that he does not know him. williams says his work as a dog walker brings him in contact with a lot of people. on may 21st, a fire broke out at the williams home, destroying it. he was not home, but his parents were, fire officials say. williams 76 year old mother was nearly killed. he says she is now at a rehab facility. investigators have not yet said if the hate incidents and the

fire are connected, nor have they said if it's arson. what's up? what are you doing? >> good. >> on saturday, williams friends and neighbors rallied in support of him and his family. they've been raising money and asking for donations of basic need items. williams says he has a message for the person responsible for the racist incidents. why? >> why would you want to do that? what was the purpose of outcome of this? what did you gain from this? >> here's another look at the person of interest that police would like to speak with. williams says he wants the person responsible for the hate incidents to serve time. he says his parents plan to rebuild their home. and christina gregg, police tell me the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> hopefully this leads to some people coming forward with more information. amberleigh in studio. thank you. absolutely >> well, a woman and her dog were killed early this morning at a house fire in solano partment says the fire started just before 1:15 a.m. on stephens street near henry street, just off walnut avenue.

firefighters say the woman was trapped in a rear bedroom and died at the scene. there were two other people home at the time of the fire who were able to escape without injuries, according to officials. the fire appears to be accidental but remains under investigation. the fire cost an estimated $250,000 worth of damage. new at ten in an unusual move, a federal appeals court panel has revived a wrongful death suit against the city of san jose and a deadly police shooting. >> 33 year old francis calonge was shot and killed by officer edward carbone near mckee and jackson on halloween of 2019, police say calonge appeared to draw what turned out to be a replica gun. no charges were filed against the officer, but the federal panel said th calonge did not draw the gun and said a jury could find the officer used excessive force. a san jose woman is in jail tonight on suspicion of murdering a man. earlier this week, police say sylvia ortega stabbed a man on sunday near the area of north 17th street and east santa clara street. the

motive and what led up to the incident is still being investigated, and the victim's identity has not been released. new at ten. >> hundreds of families of murder victims will come together this weekend in the east bay after going through unimaginable grief. they'll be walking together to help heal. ktvu joy horta, joining us now live in studio with how this event was born out of tragedy. >> joey christina, the creator of 1000 mothers, a group that hosts this two mile walk, suffered an incredible loss. her twins were killed in oakland, and she says walking helps her cope with trauma. and she's hoping to do that to help others . >> their world came to an end and mine did too. >> february 8th, 2000 a night that would change lorraine taylor's life forever. her twin sons, albert and obadiah taylor, both shot and killed with an ak 47 in an oakland parking lot at just 22 years old, my son gregory called me and he said to

me, mom, i want you to stop what you're doing right now and pray for strength. >> and i did. he called me back in about 20 minutes and he said, he said to me, mom, we lost them. >> after seven years of battling depression, taylor would turn her pain into purpose. i just didn't want any other mother to go through what i had gone through. by founding 1000 mothers to prevent violence, she would form a support group and began reaching out to other moms like shante baker of berkeley, who also lost a child to violence, a stolen, stolen life. her 26 year old daughter, jessica king get'er, a talented ballerina and aspiring journalist. while fighting off a would be rapist in oakland in 2012. she was stabbed about 60 times. >> nobody should have that experience of having their child murdered. i regretted ever having been born. i a lot of people can't take it.

>> staying active is how these mothers cope together. if you don't deal with grief or to deal with you. >> and i think the more we can heal as a community, as a society that we can actually treasure all of our children and make sure they are safe and happy. >> for the first time since the pandemic, the mourning mothers walk for healing returned saturday morning at san leandro marina park. registration for this two mile walk starts saturday at 8:30 a.m. it's followed by brunch and live entertainment. tickets are 25 bucks and all proceeds go to the services that the group provides to families of victims all over the bay area. >> christina, your heart goes out to those mothers. i mean, do you have to be a mom to take part in this walk, or is it open to the public? >> it's open to everybody. yeah, well, it started with moms. dads also take part and they say everyone is welcome to go out there and take part in this. >> christina joey in studio

tonight for that report. joey. thank you. now to an update on a story we brought you earlier this week in east oakland of a half finished street repaving project. a resident in the sobrante park neighborhood sent us this video of a construction crew repaving their street, finishing the job. another crew abandoned due to safety concerns. oakland public works confirmed the initial contractor was forced to pull out last month after one worker was threatened with a gun and another was hit by a car. neighbors said the half finished streets were filled with giant potholes that posed a safety and health hazard. the golden gate fields horse racing track in the east bay is closing this weekend after more than 80 years. the closure comes as two horses died at the racetrack today. altogether eight horses have died at the track so far this year. >> ktvu is henry lee talked to animal rights advocates who are glad to see the venue shut down. >> the industry of horse racing is not worth a single moment of cruelty. >> samantha fay rides and trains horses, and her great grandfather, second from the right, was albany mayor. when

golden gate fields first opened. although the track has been a key part of her family's history, fay says she's grateful it's closing on sunday. >> these horses, while they're still babies, are overworked. they're stabled for nearly 24 hours a day, and they are coming off the track traumatized. >> on friday, as we conducted interviews, word of another horse dying just hours earlier. martha sullivan is an organizer with kill racing, not horses. she says the track's closure has to do with financial reasons as well as pressure from animal advocacy groups. >> i think it's a combination. i think it's people are less interested in risking and taking horses lives just to gamble. >> it's a sad day. after 83 years, that golden gate fields is coming to an end. >> david duggan, the track's general manager, says they're consolidated with santa anita, the racetrack in southern california. he said friday's horse death was related to an internal issue with the horse not linked to racing or training. >> despite the best efforts of

our excellent veterinary team here, we weren't able to reverse that process that had set in, duggan said. >> the track did not give in to animal rights advocates like these, who chain themselves together across the track. >> back in 2021, that wasn't a factor in the decision to close. >> horse racing fans are making their final visits. >> it's been here for 80 years. it's kind of an end of an era. i think maybe a lot of it is because people do mobile betting now, and the last few times i've been here, the grandstands have been so empty here on closing weekend, my thoughts and my heart are with the horses that we weren't able to save. >> still unclear what exactly will happen to this 140 acre property along the bay. the stables are in berkeley's jurisdiction, and the actual track in albany could be turned into housing or a park, either way, the remaining horses will be transferred to the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton in albany. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> it was nearly 60 years ago when riots broke out in san francisco's tenderloin following

a legacy of the 1966 compton's cafeteria riot. the riot took place in the city's tenderloin, following police harassment of transgender people, particularly trans women, and now a play honoring the event's legacy is getting a permanent home. ktvu zac sos is live in the city tonight with that story, zach. >> yeah, that play's limited run back in 2018, so successful that they are bringing it back. performances will be on larkin street in a storefront that will actually double as a as a diner when the audience is there, part of an immersive experience. they're trying to offer. tonight. that news was celebrated at the tenderloin museum. >> it means the world to me because i want everyone to see this story, this history. >> donna persona celebrating the

launch of a play she co-wrote, which transports audience members back to the days of the compton's cafeteria riot and san francisco's tenderloin. >> i want everyone in the world to know about it. >> the now transgender rights activist was 18 when she first went to jean compton's cafeteria, a gathering place at night for drag queens, trans women and sex workers. in the summer of 1966, amid constant harassment by police, a trans woman threw coffee in the face of an officer after he attempted to arrest her for a crime then known as female impersonation. >> one night they just had enough, and it ended up, starting a two day riot and that's what we're commemorating with that play. >> suzanne ford, who heads up sf pride, credits the events of those days with helping spearhead a movement for transgender rights three years before the more well-known gay riot at new york's stonewall inn. >> we owe so much to them, and

i've been taught that ever since i've become part of this community, and i want to make sure that we honor that. >> the tenderloin museum, producing the play and finding it a permanent home, now under construction on larkin street. >> it's an immersive play. so you walk in and you're in a diner and you order some food, and then the play unfolds around you. and that's such an incredible experience of really getting to feel like you were there, helping bring the play to life. >> director ezra reeves. >> this is the moment to be telling this story. i mean, there's been so many attacks on trans rights and trans lives. this is a story that tells audiences that we've always been here, we've always been here. and it's beyond bravery. it's people fighting for their lives, for their dignity. it's an incredible story, and it should be heard. >> and the first performances of that play expected to take place sometime in the fall, if you'd like to get on the list for tickets, we'll be posting a link

on ktvu.com. >> christina. yeah, i remember speaking with donna persona several years ago when that play first came out. nice to see that it finally has a permanent home. zack. thank you for that report. well, tomorrow morning, hundreds of volunteers will head to twin peaks in san francisco to finish construction of the pink triangle. it's become an annual tradition in the city. the lgbtq community has reclaimed the triangle as a symbol of pride after it was initially used to identify gay prisoners in concentration camps. today, the structure for the triangle was set up. people will gather in the morning to add the colorful tarps, and there will be a ceremony once it's completed around 10:30 a.m. >> new at ten a berkeley woman has been charged with identity theft, accused of posing as a social worker to steal personal information. police say melody derrico was busted after trying to steal a woman's identity to get pg and e service at her home, and food stamps. police say the suspect had a pdf file with personal information from more than 700 people. court records show that derrico also

has prior convictions for identity theft. >> a long awaited project to improve connections between vta light rail and bart is breaking ground in san jose tomorrow. the light rail extension will connect vta riders from the east ridge station directly to bart at the milpitas station. the construction is expected to be completed in 2028. vta and elected leaders are inviting the public to celebrate the beginning of construction with a resource fair. food and music. the celebration begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the eastridge transit center. the biden administration is tightening the fuel mileage standards for automakers by 2031, all new vehicles sold here in the u.s. will have to average at least 38 miles per gallon. the current standard is about 29 miles. this move is part of a long term strategy by the white house to try to convince automakers to produce more electric cars. experts say gas powered vehicles are one of the leading contributors of climate change. >> a live look outside our doors

at this hour. it's the cool, breezy one over at sfo where we do have mostly cloudy skies at this time. temperatures in the low 60s for the afternoon coming on saturday. there is your view there. we do have the onshore breeze still at this hour. we'll check in on the winds here in just a moment. let's take a look at some of the afternoon highs upper 60s reported in areas like san mateo today. we had low to mid 70s over near napa and our inner east bay. temperatures in the low to mid to upper 80s. so finally falling out of the 90s for the inner east bay. and it fell a lot more comfortable today across the bay area. 55 right now sfo 57 in oakland, napa 55. we have still upper 60s reported in brentwood. so a nice evening for you there. but temperatures much cooler down by 510 degrees or so for the inner east bay compared to yesterday. everybody else within a few degrees of where we were at this time on thursday evening, the onshore breeze through fairfield is blowing quite strongly. we've

got 38mph reported there, with the wind gusts 32 in oakland. napa reporting a wind sustained at 16 so that cool pacific air continuing to move all the way through the delta and into the sacramento valley this evening. the clouds will be low, mid and high level for tomorrow. here's a look at this evening and into tomorrow morning. starting out with a little bit of patchy drizzle, a possibility and even into the afternoon. we do expect partly sunny, partly cloudy conditions. a better look at the afternoon highs for tomorrow. what we can expect for the rest of the weekend, and the extended forecast coming up. >> all right rosemary thank you. contra costa county getting nearly $1.5 million in state funds for development of what it calls its resilient shoreline plan. this funding is from the california ocean protection council's sea level rise adaption planning grant. program officials say the funding will provide an essential foundation to create consistent sea level rise planning across the county, from the san francisco bay to the sacramento-san joaquin delta, the contra costa resilient shoreline plan addresses sea level rise across

the entire 90 miles of the county's shoreline, with a focus on impacted communities. >> second harvest of silicon valley is closing its largest warehouse because of a looming rent increase. the 90,000 square foot warehouse on brennan street in san jose receives more than 85 tractor trailer loads of food a week. all of that food is distributed at second harvest facilities. officials say the closure will make it harder logistically to store and distribute food. it will be especially difficult at a time when the need for food assistance is greater than percent more people than we did before the pandemic, and we're doing it on a budget that's 40% less than at the height of the pandemic. >> so it is what is really a challenge to us, and that's why we need people's support. >> at second harvest did not say how much the rent increase is. it is currently working on getting donations to build a new, larger facility, which it hopes to open in a couple of years. meanwhile, plans to work out of its existing smaller

will rule on an antitrust lawsuit against google filed in virginia. the case examines whether the company broke antitrust laws by creating a monopoly on online advertising. it was set to go before a jury in september, but google took the unusual step of writing a check for three times the amount of potential damages, saying that rendered a jury trial moot. a judge agreed, saying the $2 million check covered the highest amount the government had sought. the virginia case is separate from a case in washington, d.c. over whether google's search engine is an

illegal monopoly. >> markets ending the week higher today following a stronger than expected jobs report, all three major indexes were up for the week, even as the dow slipped 87 points. the nasdaq fell 40 and the s&p dropped six. the latest data is showing better than expected results. ktvu tom vacar reports with a look at the numbers and spoke to a labor expert on whether those promising numbers will hold. >> the u.s. job count increased by another 272,000 jobs last month. that's way more than the 180,000 that had been forecast, and well above the recent running average of 232,000 a month. >> at the same time, i think it's important to note, the main sectors of job growth nationwide continue to be ones connected to government spending, employment lawyer and former ed director

michael bernick cautions that health care, social services and direct government jobs account for 46% of the new jobs, much of it driven by tax money. private sector, construction, manufacturing, showed modest, far more modest gains. >> nonetheless, the total national unemployment rate ticked up a notch to 4. >> still low by the, standards of the past half century, but above the 3.7% we had a year ago in may 2023. >> wages compared to a year ago are 4.1% higher. but stubborn inflation at 3.4% eats up most of that. >> and i think that explains why polling shows most most americans dissatisfied, or at least very worried. >> the number of posted job listings has come down a bit to 8.1 million, but still well above pre-pandemic numbers.

>> but it's well below what we were two years ago. in may 2022, which was 11.7 million. >> the number of people voluntarily leaving their jobs, as opposed to being fired or laid off, is also down to 3.5 million. also well above pre-pandemic levels. >> what we know about the quits rate is that it reflects a lot of confidence people have in the economy, the confidence they can get other jobs. >> all of that seems hopeful and manageable. but here is what is not declining consumer spending. >> declining retail spending, declining industrial production, as well as this, stubbornly high inflation rate, all these negatives suggest a future flattening. >> growth in jobs suggest, as we've seen in the past, tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. >> still to come, the battle over prop 47 continues the

democratic leaders in the state legislature are trying to keep a measure that would reform prop

47 off the november ballot. voters passed prop 4710 years ago to reduce penalties for drug crimes and other misdemeanors. critics of the law blame prop 47 for increased retail theft. the governor says he and other democrats are trying to negotiate with supporters of the proposed measure. on another solution they are instead pushing a set of public safety related bills. >> i don't think there's a need to have it on the ballot. i have something on the ballot that doesn't actually achieve the goals that are intended. why do something that can't be done? legislative with more flexibility? i think it's a better approach to governing. >> the prop 47 reform proposal will likely have enough signatures to qualify for the november ballot, needs to be certified by june 27th, meaning there are just weeks left for democratic state lawmakers and the governor to try to negotiate with the campaign. >> also today, governor newsom joining lgbtq plus leaders to promote a measure reaffirming same sex marriage in the state. >> it was 20 years ago when then mayor newsom directed city officials to issue same sex

marriage licenses in defiance of state and federal law. as ktvu christien kafton reports, voters will decide this november whether to enshrine marriage equality in the state constitution. >> california has had a back and forth relationship with same sex marriage since san francisco began marrying couples in 2004. in 2008, voters passed proposition eight, changing the state constitution to block same sex marriage. the united states supreme court decision in 2013 made that amendment obsolete, but it's still there. now, state assemblyman evan low from the south bay and san francisco senator scott wiener have co-written assembly constitutional amendment five, which californians will vote on in november. the amendment removes the provisions opposing same sex marriage from the constitution once and for all. >> it's sort of seen as quote unquote, zombie language, but the fact of the matter is, given where the direction of the united states supreme court is, that provides the impetus and the sense of urgency to say that we need to preempt this. >> the amendment has already cleared the necessary legislative hurdles and has the

backing of governor gavin newsom, who worries that shifting national political tides could undo marriage equality. >> look what's happening. all these red states to voting rights, civil rights, lgbtq rights. look what's happened to women's rights, not just access to abortion, but the debate we're having today about access to contraception. this is real. >> married couples in san francisco say the battle for equality is a constant struggle, and say they will support the measure in the fall. >> absolutely. it means everything to me. i'm you know, marriage equality should be across the nation. so if it's not enshrined in our constitution here in california, which we get looked at often for, it definitely needs to be. >> ron bacon and john cooper say after more than 30 years together, they've had to go back and forth to get married and stay married. >> he and i have been married three times because of the law. >> they say they'll vote to protect their rights and their marriage. >> we always believe that it should be a right for everybody, not just straight people.

>> voters will have their say. november fifth in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> san francisco mayor london breed was at today's event with governor newsom. she wrote on x, quote, our commitment to supporting the california right to marry and repeal proposition eight amendment is unwavering. together, we are taking a powerful step toward ensuring equality and the freedom to marry for all. >> new at ten new research finds that many people could be living with a natural gas leak in their homes and not even know it. the study by oakland psc health, energy and stanford university analyzed nearly 600 samples of natural gas from 481 homes in 17 cities in the u.s. and canada. they found that 97% of the samples contain the chemical benzene, which is linked to cancer. they say smaller gas leaks may be undetectable for most people to smell, but researchers say tiny leaks can become a persistent source of hazardous benzene and methane. they say consumers would benefit
