west is being remembered for his legendary play and team leadership. the l.a. clippers announced this morning that jerry west died peacefully at his home with his wife at his side. he was 86 years old. the hall of famer is known as one of the best basketball players of all time. he was the first player drafted by the lakers after they moved to los angeles. west was a one time nba champion and a 14 time all star in the 1969 nba finals, he became the only player to be named mvp while playing on the losing team, and west's silhouette is still being used as the nba's logo. >> we're talking about an icon here. we're talking about a bill russell, a red auerbach. jerry west belongs, up there with those names and the thing about jerry west was he was a great player. he was a great executive . and i think he's he will go down as the greatest basketball mind of all time. >> west was an executive with

the warriors and was instrumental in bringing kevin durant to the team after the 2017 championship season, he joined the la clippers in the same capacity between his time playing, coaching and in the front office, west spent over 60 years as part of the nba, and warriors owner joe lacob released a statement this morning, reading in part, he did so much for the nba, the game of basketball and each of the teams he was associated with during his unmatched career, including the warriors. jerry had a profound and immense impact on our franchise and was instrumental in our recent decade of success. he goes on to say, we are devastated with today's news of his passing and extend our prayers and support to his wife, karen, his entire family and the nba community. >> now to a story that affects so many of us across the country and here in the bay area. inflation in the us is slowing down. the labor department issued new economic numbers that may give the federal reserve something to think about. ktvu

james torres breaks down the consumer price index report. >> what we're learning from this morning's report could help the federal reserve determine what we do with interest rates later this year that could affect mortgages, car loans and maybe even bring relief to prices at the gas pump and the grocery store. >> i would say that today's a good sign. experts in the finance world like the news from the consumer price index this morning. >> two numbers to pay attention to the headline and the core. the headline inflation did not increase month to month for the first time all year, staying at 3.3, meaning all the places you spend money, food, energy, travel and housing is about 3.3% more expensive this past may compared to may of last year, the fed wants that number to be around 2. the core inflation, excluding food and energy, rose 2, which is slower than expected. >> the big bugaboo in the

numbers was what they call shelter housing related costs still seem to be way high over 5, about 5.4% on a year over year basis. >> and of course, those of us in the bay area know full well that that's a disturbing reality. >> the report says food is up one tenth of a percent, but energy is down 2. though the numbers look good, it's not something you'll notice in your wallet today. >> i'm like getting older now and i'm growing up right? i'm 20 now, so i live in my own apartment, i buy my own groceries, i do all these things and it feels like, each each month it's getting higher and higher. >> i think i noticed a little fluctuation in the gas. it went down a little bit, but, that's just one aspect of life, right? so there's so many other aspects that are steady, are getting more expensive. >> the report may help the fed gain confidence on whether to decide to cut interest rates later this year. experts say this report is off to a good

start, but the fed is not in any rush until it sees a bigger improvement. >> we know that inflation is not going up as fast as we expected. my suggestion has always been not to look too closely at the month over month numbers, but to look at the year over year numbers. and if you and i were having this conversation a year ago, the consumer price index and the pce would be about 6% if we were having this conversation two years ago, it would be 8 or 9. >> i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. new at noon. the federal reserve is maintaining the pause on its benchmark federal funds interest rate. the central bank wrapping up its monthly meeting about an hour ago and decided to leave interest rates unchanged. its benchmark rate is staying steady in the range of five and a quarter to 5.5% now, according to the federal reserve. inflation has fallen farther toward its 2% target in recent months, but fed chairman jerome

powell signaled that the central bank expects to cut its interest rate just once this year. >> inflation has eased substantially from a peak of 7% to 2.7, but is still too high. we are strongly committed to returning inflation to our 2% goal in support of a strong economy that benefits everyone. >> the last time the federal reserve changed its benchmark interest rate was nearly a year ago. in july of 2023. all right. let's take a look now at stocks the dow jones industrial average. all the major indexes are up right now. the dow up 28. but it's still right around pretty flat from yesterday. the tech heavy nasdaq that's up 1.7% over 300 points today. and the s&p 500 that is up nearly 1. nearly 50 points at the moment. >> well, tonight the leading candidates for mayor of san francisco will go face to face in a debate. ktvu is partnering with city arts and lectures and manny's for this debate featuring the current mayor, london breed, mark farrell, daniel lurie, aaron peskin and

asha safai. the debate is tonight at 630 at the sidney goldstein theater. the debate moderators will be the new york times, san francisco bureau chief heather knight and manny uktv. tickets to be there in person are sold out, but tickets are still available to watch that debate virtually. and when the debate is over, we areoi to make the entire thin available for streaming on your fox local app, on your smart tv, as well as on the ktvu youtube channel. well, teenager from oakland says all of her graduation gifts were stolen just hours after her graduation ceremony. but as ktvu is, amber lee tells us, a nonprofit organization is now helping her to recover some of what she lost. >> it's my escape from the world and i get to express myself. >> soraya pharr of oakland loves to draw. she tells me it helps her forget that she was recently the victim of a crime. >> it helped me forget about the

situation for at least a little bit. >> on thursday, she graduated from envision academy high school with a 3.8 gpa. she received a money lei, gift cards, and other presents that evening, soraya and her family, including her godmother, went to a restaurant in uptown oakland and to celebrate when the 17 year old left the restaurant to go to her godmother's car parked on broadway, her heart sank. >> we were parked about right here, and as soon as we walked up, all we saw was the glass. >> broken glass from someone breaking into the car, popping open the trunk and taking soraya's graduation cap and all of her presents, including the money lei stolen along with the joy of marking a major milestone that day. it wasn't really about the gifts, it was about the fact that all these people gave me their money and they gave me their time and their gifts, and it all got taken. >> so i was just really hurt by that. >> i got very angry because, you

know, this should have been the happiest night of her life. and then whenever she thinks about her graduation, she'll have this scar, this memory. >> 16 year old daughter, who was shot and killed in 1997. he attended soraya's graduation and describes her as a bright star who participated in many of his foundation's college prep programs. lacey is now raising money to help the teen. >> i'm hoping the person or persons who perpetrated this crime sees this and knows that we as a community are standing together for our young people. >> soraya received an email from the oakland police department tuesday that she passed the interviews and testing for a position as a police cadet. she also plans to attend college. >> what i've learned is that, honestly, no matter what the bad situation is, i'll have support. >> soraya tells me things are definitely looking up. she says

the donations and a part time job as a police cadet will help her pay for expenses when she starts laney college in the fall in oakland. amber lee ktvu, fox two news. >> charges have been filed against three men in connection to a freeway shooting last year that killed a five year old girl in fremont. it was a day before easter last year when eliana crisostomo was shot and killed while riding in her family car. officials say the suspects believed the driver was a rival gang member. district attorney pamela price said three men are now facing murder charges with gang and gun enhancements, and if convicted, they each face a sentence of 101 years to life in prison. now, price added in a statement, quote, i want the public to know that we have charged them and that we intend to do everything in our power to prosecute them and to hold them accountable for the harm they have caused this family and our community. san francisco mayor london breed said today. newly installed license plate readers are already showing results.

about 100 cameras were installed around the city by police earlier this year. the mayor's office says this tech has helped police make a number of arrests for retail thefts, carjackings, robberies and sexual assault and has helped bring down the city's overall crime rate. another 300 cameras are scheduled to be installed around the city next month. >> new at noon sony pictures has acquired a popular dine in movie theater chain that has a location here in the bay area. alamo drafthouse has 35 locations, including one in san francisco. it was founded in 1997 as a single screen, family owned repertory theater in austin, texas, and it distinguished itself in the exhibition landscape with drinks, dine in, food service and a cool vibe. sony said it will continue to welcome content from all studios and distributors at its dine in theaters. for many years, hollywood studios were banned from owning movie theaters, but that changed in 2020, when the paramount consent decrees were terminated. netflix owns several theaters in new york and los

more international criticism. alex hogan has the latest developments from london. >> as israeli forces push deeper into the southern city of rafah. the diplomatic back and forth continues over the us backed cease fire deal on tuesday. hamas finally responded to the proposal, giving its support but also saying it wants some, quote, amendments. this morning, israel called that response a rejection, and us secretary of state antony blinken suggested hamas could be stalling for time. >> hamas could have answered with a single word yes. instead, hamas waited nearly two weeks

and then proposed more changes. >> now, with negotiations at a critical point, blinken is in qatar trying to keep the process alive. but it won't be easy. there are new reports that hamas leader yahya sinwar has said that he has the upper hand over israel, and that the civilian death toll is working in the militant group's favor. the un now calling for both sides to back down and get back to the bargaining table. >> it's high time for a cease fire along with the unconditional release of the hostages. the only way forward is through a political solution. >> but there are increasing signs that the war may be expanding. northern israel was hit with a major rocket attack from hezbollah militants in lebanon following an israeli airstrike that killed four hezbollah officials. israel's neighbors strongly criticizing that airstrike, calling it a destabilizing move. >> we will not be dragged into the abyss of, a regional conflict that the radicals in israel wants, blinken said. >> in the coming weeks,

officials will lay out a plan for the future of gaza when the fighting stops in london. alex hogan ktvu, fox two news. >> law enforcement in three major cities arrested several suspected terrorists with ties to isis, the fbi and immigration and customs enforcement worked together in recent days to arrest eight people from tajikistan. the arrest took place in los angeles, new york city and philadelphia to. the suspects reportedly entered the country last spring and were not flagged by the us government's screening process. >> border patrol agents cannot do investigative interviews. they don't have time like they're supposed to have investigative agencies find out who you paid, how you came, what did you take? they're not doing that. there's not time. >> the suspects haven't yet been charged with having an actual terrorist plan. but federal agents say they expect a thorough investigation will show otherwise. >> and new report finds san francisco is not prepared for more heavy rains and floods. several big storms caused flooding in san francisco last winter. the chronicle reports. a civil grand jury has found the

city's sewer system is unable to handle heavy rains in short periods, and there's concern the problem is only going to get worse with climate change. the jurors recommended improving the city's climate resilience program and provide more funding for it. >> let's talk a little bit about our local forecast happening right now. ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here. and mark, we're still dealing with fog at least in san francisco right now. >> yeah, that fog cooling off for the entire bay area. so even if you have some sunshine out there, you probably feel that cool breeze. and definitely a cooldown expected for today. and tomorrow. so no longer heat advisories for the inland spots. you can see the temperature profile over the past few days. we warmed up monday, temperatures peaking yesterday, and then cooling off for today and into your thursday. so if you're not a fan of this heat, it's you like this forecast. you can see where we have excessive heat watches and heat advisories in place right now. and it's not in the bay area. in fact, you can see the low cloud cover out toward portions of the coastline right around monterey bay and also out toward portions of the

peninsula shoreline as well. current numbers statewide, we are showing you a triple digits, not here in palm springs, where you would expected 100 degrees south lake tahoe. that's 79 is looking very nice in monterey in the upper 50s as we come in closer to the bay area satellite, we are showing you this and looks like the satellite vanished for us this afternoon. but we do have some cloud cover near the coastline to show you this for your wednesday afternoon. there we go. it's decided to show up here and out toward half moon bay, el granada and still some patches closer to san francisco as well. so the coastal area is dealing with some cooling and also the fog. in fact, everybody dealing with some cooling for today compared to yesterday, 12:00 you can see everybody has a minus sign for oakland livermore, santa rosa. not much change in half moon bay, but the overall headline today the cool down has arrived. current numbers san jose 78, concord 83 degrees. so still a few spots inland will be approaching the 90 degree mark this afternoon, but no triple digits expected. not like yesterday. we're showing you the current wind reports right now.

it's breezy out toward fairfield. these numbers will probably go up over the next few hours out toward sfo winds at about six miles an hour in san jose. winds at about seven miles an hour. here is our live camera looking out toward sfo, where you can see a bit of some haze, but looks like that the low cloud cover is trying to lift out there, and we are expecting still some patchy overcast near portions of the shoreline this afternoon. this area of high pressure. this is the source of the warming yesterday, but the cooling begins today as be more of a we have a stronger onshore breeze out there and then another system. this will kind of reinforce the cooling for your thursday. so no major heat in your forecast. even as we head into the weekend, we'll see some minor temperature swings over the next several days. but no more triple digits. take a look at the forecast highs this afternoon. the warmest locations will be in the upper 80s to right around 90 degrees. oakland 72, fremont 78, san jose. mostly sunny skies, lower 80s and san francisco near portions of the shoreline. temperatures in the low to mid 60s. here's a look ahead. your five day forecast.

while that sentiment rings true for students at connecticut's newtown high school, it's also a moment of heartache and sadness for this year's graduating class, many of whom are survivors of one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history. chris dimeo takes a closer look at how they're honoring their fallen classmates memories and wrapping up their calls for gun reform. >> most kids look forward to graduating from high school, a time when they feel they can spread their wings and fly. >> since you're in kindergarten, you just can't wait to graduate. >> the excitement is plentiful in connecticut, where newtown high school's class of 2024 is graduating wednesday. but behind the pomp and circumstance is a tragic past many seniors will carry for a lifetime. >> we can't forget about that. there is a whole chunk of our class msing, and so going into graduation, we all have very mixed emotions. >> among the more than 300 graduates are survivors of the sandy hook elementary school shooting, where a gunman killed 21st graders and six teachers back in december of 2012.

>> the shooter actually came into my classroom, so i had to, like, watch all my friends and teachers get killed. and i had to run for my life at six years old, and i know that was a really, like, traumatizing for me. >> victims will be honored during the graduation ceremony as their surviving classmates still grapple with the pain. >> i can't really remember the many times before the shooting, so in that sense, it really did take over those really innocent times, and it really forced us to grow up. so fast when we didn't need to. >> in the years since the tragedy, students have been advocating for an end to gun violence. >> we're fighting for change, and we're really not going to stop until we get it. >> many are now eyeing future careers in law or politics, and say they have plans to continue calling for firearm reform that these children educators, didn't die for nothing. chris dimeo, fox news the main channel for shipping at baltimore harbor, is

now open. >> it's been 11 weeks since the collapse of the key bridge. commercial ships can pass through the main channel now 24 hours a day. work continues to remove debris and a safety zone will be maintained to protect workers. the department of transportation estimates preliminary cost to rebuild the bridge is between 1.7 and $1.9 billion. >> a bay area lawmaker has introduced a new bill that would help tenants improve their credit score if they pay rent on time. san francisco assemblyman matt haney says ab 2747 would require landlords to give tenants the option to report their on time rent history to a credit bureau. the bill is an extension of another one that passed in 2020 that gives the option to report positive rent payments to those living in subsidized housing. you can build credit when you have on time payments for loans or credit cards. >> yet the thing that so many californians, 17 million californians do on a regular basis, which is pay their rent on time, isn't reflected for

time executive of the year. i just think the years i've spent here, have been the most special in my life. jerry west was inducted into the hall of fame in 1979. >> well, many bay area residents say the price of food increases come as a shock. whether it's at a grocery store or you see it at a restaurant. and so to keep up with the higher minimum wage, in and out just became the latest restaurant chain to raise its prices. ktvu is betty yu has those details as chris pittsburgh resident chris halika says he eats in and out every other week. >> the price increase, i understand, you know, because economy is kind of bad. >> the company said it increased prices across california the same day the state's fast food minimum wage law took effect. in-n-out said in a statement to ktvu on april 1st. we raised our prices incrementally to

accompany a pay raise for all of the associates working in our california restaurants. the price increase was also necessary to maintain our quality standards. i've always heard that in and out treats their employees well. >> it seems like that's part of their branding, and so we're definitely down to support that. >> the starting wage for in-n-out workers is 22 to $23 an hour. based on the location, which is higher than the state's new $20 minimum wage, especially coming from georgia. >> california prices are a little bit higher. but when i came to in and out and i was spending $20 on a meal, it's definitely something that i did not expect at all. >> khalil altman just moved to oakland from georgia two weeks ago. for halakah, the pricing is all relative. for example, a double double meal at the in-n-out in san francisco is the most expensive in the bay area at over $13. the same meal in alameda costs just under $12. diners pay slightly less at the san jose or pittsburgh

locations. it's not bad, you know? >> i mean, if it's what it is, as long as it don't go over $20, i'm fine with it. >> you feel the pinch the most these days, definitely. and going out for meals. so we're trying to do it less often. was it worth it today? >> was it worth it? i don't know . >> betty yu, ktvu, fox two news, san mateo county board of supervisors approved a first of its kind reward program for the bay area. >> as ktvu lamonica peters reports, anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction related to home burglaries could get up to $10,000. >> residents not only expressed concern about their possessions that were lost, but also the sanctity of their home that was violated. >> since january, nearly 90 home burglaries have been reported in san mateo counties. district three, the district's board supervisor, ray mueller, and other county leaders are now implementing a pilot reward program to help deter thieves.

>> that person that would be burglar now knows if they perpetrate this crime, the person next to them, or the person who might know the person next to them can turn them in for significant amount of money. >> the residential reward pilot program offers up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. the county's board of supervisors voted unanimously on tuesday to approve the program, using $125,000 of measure k funds. >> home burglary is unlike regular, you know, store burglaries and things like that. we're going to punish it heavier. the punishment is twice the level possible for that. and if we can give some financial incentive to people who hear things and they can can even be done, anonymously, you know, that'll be a good thing. >> the reward program will cover unincorporated county areas in district three and other cities, including atherton. half moon bay, menlo park and woodside. local jurisdiction towns have

also added more patrols. license plate readers, and encouraged homeowners to register ring cameras with local law enforcement so the footage can be used in criminal investigations. >> those neighborhood watch associations are actually incredibly strong, where once you get to know your neighbor and you understand what's happening on your street, you can identify when something's taking place that isn't in the norm, and you can report that in the moment. >> lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news a homeowner was arrested by oakland police for fatally shooting a burglary suspect. >> that shooting happened on monday evening near 98th avenue and burr street. it's unclear if the man will be formally charged and if he is charged, that homeowner could still argue self-defense. >> you're not supposed to chase them if you chase them and shoot them for example, in the back, that is unlawful. if you are an imminent fear of your life or someone else's life in your home, you have every right to

take necessary means of self-defense against the invader. prosecute >> owners have until tomorrow to decide whether to charge him. oakland police say arrests have been made in connection to several sideshows. on saturday night, the police released photos of one of the cars that was towed. that sideshow happened saturday around midnight, and oakland police found more than 300 cars and 200 people there watching as more officers arrived, the crowd scattered and the police worked with a helicopter to track some participants and stopped them. five people were arrested, three cars towed and three guns recovered. police say they're following up to identify more vehicles that took part this weekend. >> police in santa rosa arrested two teenage boys for an attack on a high school campu that attack happened on friday at elsie allen high scol. police accused 217 year olds of attacking a 16 year old boy in a bathroom. the ctim's parents took him to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. police say the attack appears to have been gang related. well, california laws banning gun sales on state property have upheld by the ninth circuit

court of appeals. a gun show promoter was among the plaintiffs who claimed that the ban on sales have violated their first and second amendment rights. the laws were approved between 2019 and 2022 and prohibit the sale of guns and ammunition at the orange county fair, the del mar fairgrounds and all state property. governor newsom said in a quote, today's common sense decision by the court validates our core message. the people not caught should be the ones deciding on how to keep our communities safe from gun violence. if other states followed our policies, thousands of lives would be saved. we won't stop defending our laws from the right's radical lawsuits. >> newly released data shows so far this year, crime in san francisco is down, according to the latest numbers from sfpd and the fbi. homicides in the city are down more than 36. the number of rapes reported is down 10. and robberies, burglaries and car thefts are down more than 17. now, early on mornings on two, the nine i spoke with

mayor london breed. she says a partnership between the police department and state and federal law enforcement has helped to reduce crime in the city. >> we have brought together a coalition of a number of law enforcement agencies from the state and the federal government. that is what's helped us considerably deal with this challenge, and we are seeing aggressive numbers, declines in every crime throughout the city. >> mayor breed says year to date , there has been a 50% reduction in car break-ins, and there have been over 3000 drug dealer arrests, including 585 people or 858 people on outstanding warrants. voters in solano county will decide this november whether to approve building what's called the california forever project. there were enough signatures on a petition to place this proposal on the november ballot. the measure, asking voters to rezone more than 17,000 acres of farmland in eastern solano county, near fairfield, to create the new community. organizers say their project is the best way for the county to plan for growth.

so no longer heat advisories in place. as you can see here. temperatures peaking yesterday still the warmest locations today will be in the upper 80s close to 90 degrees, but no triple digits are expected for today. in fact, here's a satellite showing you the low clouds, which are really focused on or south yesterday, but kind of cruising up toward the portions of the coastline. here's a look at the current temperatures across the state. and we still have some hot numbers in portions of northern california, 98 degrees in redding, of course, palm springs, 100 degrees. he expected to be hot there, and south lake tahoe in the upper 70s reporting 79. here's some of the fog, though. out toward monterey bay, out toward half moon bay, el granada. and we still have some patches right around the coast as well. closer to san francisco and ocean beach. so the cooling impacts definitely being felt already. and you can see the temperature change compared to yesterday at this time compared to tuesday, 12 p.m. and everybody has a minus sign. so definitely that's a drop off the numbers. so no major heat for today. no triple digits in our forecast. but the warmest locations right now in

the lower 80s. and they're on track to reach maybe the upper 80s or 90 degrees later on this afternoon. san jose 78, san francisco 60 degrees. santa rosa, right around 80. and that wind definitely picking up in a few spots. fairfield. you can see a southwest breeze at about 21 miles an hour. oakland airport winds at about 12 miles an hour. and right around sfo you can see winds in the single digits. half moon bay winds at 12 miles an hour. here is our live camera looking out toward mount diablo. those hillsides out there really drying up so constant reminder that we are in fire. season but no red flag fire warnings for today. no heat as you can see, this area of high pressure it was really building in yesterday, but it begins to back off today. so the cooling begins today. that is the headline. and then we're watching another system move in from the north. that will keep that cooling in check. as we do move into your thursday. and no big temperature changes as we head toward your weekend. take a look at the forecast highs this afternoon. once again, patchy fog near portions of the coastline, even right around san
