news at 730. >> this is a chance for the mayoral hopefuls to outline their vision for san francisco. thanks so much for joining me on this debate night. i'm heather holmes, and right now they are making their pitch to voters on why they should have the top job at city hall. the candidates all hope to occupy city hall next year. and the stakes tonight extremely high with san francisco facing a number of issues, i think we're going to have fun and learn a lot about the candidates. >> this is the first mayoral debate of the entire campaign season. all five of the major candidates will be here. we're going to talk about all the topics you'd expect homelessness, drug use, housing. >> that was heather knight, the new york times san francisco bureau chief and one of the moderators of this debate. tonight, she and manny, you could tell proprietor of the event space manny's are posing questions to mayor breed and her challengers, former mayor mark farrell, philanthropist daniel lurie and supervisors aaron

streaming on the fox local app right there on your smart tv, as well as on the ktvu youtube channel. so be sure to check out the opportunities to take a look at that debate there. okay, now to the life and death of a trailblazer in education. the man known as the father of black studies died this week. doctor nathan hare is known for starting the very first black studies program in the us at san francisco state back in the 1960s. our crystal bailey is here after learning of hare's legacy, not only here in the bay area, but really across the nation. crystal. >> well, heather, his work changed the way higher education teaches black history. he was a man ahead of his time. doctor hare passed away on monday at 91 years old. he was an activist who helped lead student and faculty protests alongside the black student union on san francisco state's campus back in 1968, paving the way for the black studies program that's been recreated all over the country. it was a tumultuous time. 1968 great strikes and

protests had begun on san francisco state university's campus. the black student union was demanding more black student admissions, more black faculty and staff, and more black education and campus racism. doctor nathan hare came from howard university in dc, involved in the black power movement, leading the charge for the first black studies program in the united states, and this clip found in san francisco state's tv archive. doctor hare is being interviewed by channel five. >> we're trying to start a black studies program at state college , and i think that it has the greatest and last hope to solve the educational problems of the black race in this country. shall jones, now a professor at san francisco state, is seen here next to doctor hare on the first day of the strikes. >> she says his work paved the way for students like her to attend college. >> i'm here because of doctor hare. i'm here because of what we did 50 years ago. i would

have never dreamed that i would be a professor today, the black studies program he developed offered students a more inclusive history. if it wasn't for black history, there would be no history. >> pretty much everything was viewed from a european perspective or a eurocentric perspective. and what black studies did, it gave you a different critique of american society. >> black and white students alike fought for the cause, but it was only a year before doctor hare was let go. after his time at san francisco state, he went on to write books and develop the black think tank with his wife julia, promoting the wellness of black folks through clinical psychology. before he passed away on monday at 91 years old, the program was renamed africana studies in 2005, but it lives on today at san francisco state, and the program was replicated at universities and colleges all over the country. >> i think his his his work is actually immeasurable the sense that it will continue to

impact many generations that are not seen right now, giving way to empower the next generation of black students. >> and those who knew him say it's not a coincidence. doctor hare passed away so close to juneteenth because he stood for freedom. heather. >> yeah, such a remarkable man, leaving such a remarkable footprint, especially here in the bay area. crystal. thank you . well, this marks the very first pride month for oakland's new lgbtq cultural district. the district was just formed six months ago on lakeshore avenue. it's home to the oakland lgbtq center, and they are kicking off pride month with several celebrations organizers tell ktvu they're also fundraising for some projects to transform the area, including a flagpole and rainbow crosswalks to celebrate a haven for the east bay's lgbtq plus community and business owners. >> there are over 20 bills businesses in the multi-block

district. we want to encourage more people to come into this area and, and establish their business here. >> the oakland lgbtq plus center has expanded its services to include a clinic and a town youth club center that serves about 500 young people, a center that provides mental health services for the lgbtq community in san francisco, says it is under threat of eviction. the queer life space has been providing counseling in the castro district for 13 years. this week, board of supervisors president aaron peskin says he introduced legislation to protect the center. it would prevent a change of use at the property without approval from the planning commission. a new at 730 tonight, san francisco city leaders today kicking off an annual summer youth program right there at civic center plaza. the san francisco public defender's magic program got underway today. it involves more than 500 children and staff taking part in different summer

grabbed fire extinguishers and a water hose to fight back the flames. firefighters responded quickly and were able to stop the steadily progressing blaze before it spread beyond the two acre property and to neighboring homes in this tony subdivision, santa clara county fire department officials say. just days before they mailed 11,000 letters to area residents in this urban interface about their defensible space program. the first zone, from 0 to 5ft from a house, sees homeowners cut grass down to the dirt level and remove dead shrubs, leaves, plants, and flammable materials. zone two from 5 to 30ft, advises grass length should not be more than four inches, and horizontal spaces placed between shrubs. the last zone number three, from 30 to 100ft, sees tree foliage trimmed and the removal of smaller trees to reduce the possibility of blowing embers spreading a fire because it slows the fire down. >> but it also allows us time to go out and suppress the fires and gives us what we call

trigger points, areas where we know we want to stop the fire without the defensible space, it makes it harder for us to extinguish the fires. >> i didn't believe it would be me, but i hoped we'd never have to witness it. former stanford cardinal head coach ty willingham's house was in harm's way, but he acted on the information in the defensible space letter and says the play call was a sound one. >> once we got the instructions, then you have to act on the plan and you have to have confidence that the plan is workable. >> okay, if we didn't have confidence before, we do now, that really saved our property, our neighborhood, the hillside county fire officials say because of the increased amount of rainfall we've had and the higher than normal temperatures, there's an increased risk of wildfires. >> so they'd like people living in the urban interface, homes that back up to dry hillsides to create their defensible space. now, before we get further into fire season in san jose, jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news.

>> okay. officials really driving home that point that you really need to create that buffer zone around your house. yes. >> and even though the long range computer models do suggest a slightly below normal summer, as far as our temperatures are concerned, it has been hot very quickly and we are noticing some winds picking up for the weekend as far as our computer models are concerned, and that does promote the fire danger, right here in the bay area. and it could come as early as father's day. and i want to make note of that right now, because many people are planning barbecues and it will be a breezy to downright windy day in the bay area with stronger northerly winds. so there is a potential for a fire weather watch or an advisory posted here in the bay area on sunday and monday. meanwhile, taking a look at monument peak, it stands just over 2500ft in elevation and you can see just how dried out we are right now. a bit of haze out

there because of the recent heat and the pollutants trapped close to the surface. now san jose at the surface has a 12 mile per hour wind, but at the higher elevation towards monument peak, we do have wind gusts in excess of 20mph. otherwise, the winds that began to come down ever so gently, except out towards travel and fairfield, where the winds are gusting up to 35mph. napa right now, a wind out of the south at 33. temperatures across the bay area. boy did you feel the difference. we came down in credibly. it was 101 degrees in livermore yesterday, 86 today it was 93, and redwood city and redwood shores today topping off at 80 degrees. a much more pleasant day around the bay area. right now our temperatures stand anywhere from 55 and half moon bay. and in san francisco. so 77 degrees in concord and in clayton, backing all the way into hercules. these temperatures are up to 21 degrees cooler than it was 24 hours ago. at this time. and

plate readers that were approved by voters during a recent proposition. despite though some privacy concerns. while the city installed those devices three months ago, now about 100 of these units are placed at various intersections throughout the city. police chief bill scott says the department has already received thousands of hits on stolen or wanted vehicles, leading to a major amount of arrests and recovered property. mayor london breed says the cameras are a critical piece of the puzzle to track down criminals and reduce crime in the city, but privacy advocates such as the electronic frontier foundation say that those arrests come at a risk to people's privacy. >> your entire day is being tracked and traced and that could reveal things that you might not want public who you visit in a day, what doctors you visit, what lawyers you visit.

if you have attend a protest, or if you have a meeting with a journalist. >> the city's first license plate reader was installed at ninth and irving near sunset wellness, which was targeted by thieves. the owner tells us they support the new technology and at 4:00 in the morning, they were in and out. >> in two minutes, the police got here in three. there's too much other stuff going on that we need to be able to monitor and watch. you know, some people may think their privacy is infringed, but hey, it's security. it helps everybody. >> police say 300 more cameras should be in place at intersections throughout the city by the end of next month. san francisco also installing automated speed cameras and will roll out a drone program to track down criminals as well. walk sf is hosting a vigil tomorrow at the recent crash site, marking the city's 10th pedestrian fatality. tomorrow's vigil will be held at the corner of mission street and cortland avenue. it's where a 41 year old man was hit on monday. the vigil is set to begin at five in the

evening. organizers and attendees were created temporary memorial in remembrance of this week's victim and all of the pedestrian victims this year. today, police are confirming the death of a male cyclist in san francisco. they say the man was hit by a this morning or on the morning. excuse me, of may 30th, in the area of newhall stre a fairfax avenue. accordin ahorities, he died from his iuries yesterday despite life saving efforts performed there at the hospital. sfpd says this remains an open and active investigation. now we go to oakland, which has repaved 200 miles of roads, with more work still going on all across the city. mayor shengtao making the announcement in this video from 60th street near international boulevard that she shared online today, the mayor said this is part of the city's investment into east oakland. transportation director josh rohan told us the work will also include improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists, high visibility crosswalks. >> we've we've installed 3000 of those. we've we've installed

at the age of 86. his legacy remembered on and off the court. the hall of famer is known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. he's also known for his front office leadership, including his important role in helping shape the dynasty of the golden state warriors. the tribute stands outside of chase center honoring westlife. bay area fans say they are sad to hear of his passing. >> he did a lot for this city

even though you know he was a lakers guy. you know he did so much for the warriors. so i would say that you know, the respect that we have for him in the bay area is huge. it's a super sad day for him. he lived a great life. >> the la clippers made the announcement that west side peacefully at his home with his wife by his side. he was the first player drafted by the lakers after they moved to los angeles. between his time playing, coaching and in the front office, west spent more than 60 years as part of the nba and earned nine championship rings on and off the court. west silhouette, in fact, still being used as the nba's logo. new. at 730 tonight, a party for two marin county women who are both celebrating a huge milestone. joanne bailes and vivian gordon are both turning 100 years old. they celebrated at the deer park community retirement community in novato today. there were songs, balloons and of course, plenty of cake for the two women as they both join the century club. >> and i thank the crew and the chef and the whole gang. you're
