>> good morning to you and welcome to mornings on two. i'm claudine wong. >> good morning everyone. happy weekend. last weekend full weekend of spring. i know, i know that's hard to believe. >> although it's cooler today. it is the heat. now we have the cool. so much to keep track of. rosemary. yeah. >> let's check in with rosemary and find out what's happening on this weekend. >> yes. good morning to both you. happy saturday. you may notice not much fog out there this morning. we are starting out with sunshine and blue sky and likely to remain that way for the weekend, as wind could be an issue for some. a beautiful view there of the golden gate bridge. temperatures at this hour. a little warmer in areas like novato, off to a 7 degrees difference from yesterday. meanwhile san jose you are up by three. most areas within a degree or 2nd may not notice so much. 52 degrees right now in san francisco for the inner east bay, 66 for you, brentwood and for our north bay 53 in novato. the winds are

expected to be a bit breezy for the afternoon. right now, we still have an onshore breeze. fairfield reporting a 14mph. it will turn a little bit north northwest as we get into the second part of the day and along the coastline in our hills and perhaps along our passes, we do expect again the winds to be an issue at times for the afternoon. today under mostly sunny, breezy conditions, temperatures will range from low 60s at the coast to upper 80s inland. only slightly cooler for our inland cities. tomorrow a better look at the current conditions and what we can expect for the bay area weekend coming up. >> all right. thank you, rosemary. well, san francisco park, where an 88 year old woman was beaten and later died, will now bear her name. wong was doing her morning exercises in the park when she was attacked. let's go to ktvu. betty yu, who has more on what is happening today to honor this grandmother. >> claudine. this grandmother was affectionately known in this community as grandma wong, and today the community wants this

park to be a place of healing and unity moving forward. family and friends will gather today at the park formerly known as visitacion valley playground. it will officially be renamed yick wong peace and friendship park. grandma wong was beaten in 2019. she suffered a broken skull, arms and neck. her home across the street was also burglarized. minutes later, she died from her injuries a year later at 89 years old, at the hospital has happened as a canary in the coal mine. >> we need a lot of attention for our seniors and our youth and that is what the victim's granddaughter said back in 2020. >> now, the unveiling celebration of wong peace and friendship park will begin at 11 a.m. the event will feature chinese line dancing, west african drumming and other cultural healing festivities. there will also be free books and activities for children. now. the suspect, keyonte

catherine, was arrested shortly after the attack. he remains jailed while awaiting trial on murder and other charges. claudia. >> all right. a nice tribute to her we expect today. thank you so much. betty yu reporting live from the newsroom. >> time now. 703. today was supposed to be the last day for security guard to work at a cvs pharmacy in fremont. he had requested a transfer to another store, but before the switch, that security guard was shot and killed by a customer. late thursday night, ktvu spoke to a cashier on duty at the time. he says that customer entered with a large backpack and refused to turn it over at the entrance, so the cashier radioed the security guard, keep an eye on the customer while not making him feel targeted, but a heated confrontation with that customer ensued, yelling profanities to each other. >> and then, you know, throwing any racial remarks to each other. i heard two gunshots, and i looked over, and then i started the, the security guard fell down, face flat in front of

the electronic section. >> that security guard died at the scene while the customer went to the hospital with wounds to his neck. identities of both men have not been released just yet. authorities have not announced whether that customer will be charged in the case. the store has been temporarily closed. a bay area man is leading a class action lawsuit against red lobster. >> george parker filed that lawsuit after the restaurant he was working at, located in rohnert park, closed without warning. the complaint, obtained by the chronicle, is accusing red lobster entities of violating the california worker adjustment and retraining act. that law requires 60 days written notice for mass layoffs or closures by large companies. the chain abruptly closed dozens of restaurants about a month ago. we have reached out to red lobster and are still waiting for a response. >> california's stepping up efforts against its fentanyl crisis. governor newsom announced he's more than doubling the number of

california national guard members patrolling ports of entry along our border. the number goes from 155 to nearly 400 service members, all trying to stop criminal gangs and drug trafficking, newsom says the state's counter drug task force is holding smugglers accountable. >> san isidro port of entry, not too far away, which is the largest in the western hemisphere. and we were just down here with the national guard meeting with customs, agents, as well as border patrol talking about our partnerships. 390 national guardsmen and women that have been working, particularly as relates to fentanyl. >> the operation, called cal guard, sees more than 62,000 pounds of fentanyl. last year alone. that's a 1,000% increase from just 2021. >> the san francisco police department is showing off items seized in a large drug bust in the mission district. police say plain clothes officers acting on a tip stopped a car in the area of 17th and shotwell streets. they found three kilos of

cocaine, ketamine, methamphetamine, mushrooms, suspected ecstasy, drugs and prescription drugs. officers also found $600,000 in cash inside that car. two men were taken into custody and a new study reveals concerning levels of pesticides and cannabis products sold across california. and that includes vape and pre-roll weed brands. a joint investigation by the la times and weed week revealed. out of 42 products tested, 25 showed pesticide concentrations exceeding state or federal standards. while most pesticides were found in low concentrations , there is a risk of long term harm from frequent use. one of the companies named insys, notes that they it adheres to california's strict testing requirements and pesticide limits. >> happening today, san mateo county launching its fireworks buyback program for a second straight year, sheriff's office will host three fireworks buyback programs this month. today is the coastside fire protection district headquarters

in half moon bay. next saturday is the northern branch courthouse in south san francisco, followed by the last buyback june the 29th. that's at the sheriff's substation on broadway in redwood city. people can receive up to $200. last year's event in the north, fair oaks community recovered 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives. sheriff's office also reported a reduction in emergency calls during the july 4th holiday weekend at north fair oaks. happening today. downtown san jose will be coming alive with a daytime rave at discovery meadow park. that event goes from 2 to 9 p.m. tonight, hosted by social media influencers san jose foos, and headlined by the dj and music producer gordo. organizers are expected several thousand people to attend. besides the electronic dance music, spectators can also enjoy food trucks and, do a little shopping as well. >> all right. time now is 708.

let's talk about our weather. certainly, we're expecting a little bit of a wind today. rosemary. >> yeah, it's going to be breezy out there, especially along our coastline just inside the bay. a beautiful view here of the golden gate bridge. and that wind has helped to knock away the fog. we have mostly sunny skies in most areas this morning. a little bit of fog right along the coastline, but it is not expected to last so going with the sunny conditions and temperatures for our inland cities will actually be a little bit above average for this time of year, right now, a little bit of a west wind still holding on, expected to turn more north as we get into the weekend, and that north wind is a drier wind than the onshore breeze coming from the pacific. and that means an increase in fire danger coming along with it. now, for us, we don't have an advisory, but close to the sacramento valley, the national weather service out of sacramento has issued a red flag warning. so again, another indication of just the dry air that will be joining us for the weekend, 53 degrees right now in san

action for childhood arrivals program. president biden has announced he will hold an event next week to celebrate that program. daca was created by the obama administration back in 2012. it was designed to protect eligible young adults who came to the u.s. as children from deportation. since its creation, daca has faced legal challenges, with the most recent being last

year when a federal judge again declared daca illegal. well, now the policy is being litigated in the courts, leaving recipients in a state of uncertainty, according to the nonprofit the center for american progress, there are more than 544,000 active daca recipients who live in this country, right now, and one of them is jacqueline valencia. thanks so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> so tell me your story because it's important to understand the individual stories and how this daca program was designed to help people like you. tell me, tell me the dreamers story of yours. >> yeah. like many, i was brought here to the us as a child. i was only two and a half years old when me and my mother came here to actually fremont, california, then here resided in oakland and now richmond, i don't even have any recollection's right of like, the traveling here, the sacrifices that my mother had to make and leaving my two sisters behind. >> and the idea is that you don't know any other life

besides the one in the us. and i think that was the genesis of this program. yeah. >> and my mother wanted for me to have an education. and she knew that in mexico i had less opportunities, she had less opportunities. and so that's why she migrated here to the us with me and my sisters. >> and your sisters came later. you said when you came to. >> yes, they came later. so they were separated. >> there are some numbers that i think are interesting as we take a look at some very cute childhood pictures of you, you know, when you talk about daca recipients and you talk about the history of, of people coming here, there was this 2023 survey we put out there on the screen, average age at arrival six and 6.6 years old. right. the average time in the us now 25 years, nine out of ten are employed are in school, three out of ten are first time home buyers. and so the rule was you had to be here by 2007 for you to qualify. what do you think is the misconception about dreamers and that 12 years later, because there's so much political and

legal battling over the program that that you are trying to get across, because we know you advocate and you you talk about the dreamers situation in order to help other dreamers like you. >> yeah. and i and i think, you know, dreamers are not stealing jobs, right? i think many of us, you know, went to college are going to school right now, have many professions, whether it's in child care. right. taking care of america's children's, to being doctors, lawyers. you know, i have friends in the medical field. i have friends who are lawyers. and so, they're not stealing jobs. we're not here to steal jobs. we're here to also be taxpayers. like we've been since daca started. i think that's, for example, the opportunity that i've gotten is to be able to do my taxes and hopefully one day, yes, become a homeowner. >> is there a lot of fear? i mean, you we're looking at at video and we're looking at your own personal pictures of when you advocate, do you live in a level of fear? yes because just being in daca, being in limbo and being in the courts, it's

like every three, four months, six months, right? it's like the anxiety, the panic will i, you know, be able to keep my job, you know, will my fellow classmates, you know, will i still be able to coach, for example, you know, something that i'm very passionate about? will i be able to support and paying the mortgage for my parents? you know, who don't have a full time job? so i think that's my main worry, like many others who are in this situation right now and tell me what life is like for you now, you mentioned coaching. >> you coached soccer. and you, you you're just kind of living and waiting. >> yeah, yeah. so, being able to work full time, you know, with having daca, having that social security number, allows me to also be employed with the west contra costa unified school district. and i've been very passionate on the last eight years coaching soccer, softball and volleyball for the high school that i graduated from. so at this point i'm able to give back, and i think without daca, i will not be able to coach. >> what do you say for the larger issue for folks who say

illegal immigration is the obviously that's a hot button issue, the point of daca, as supporters will say, is to not bring in the kids who didn't make any decisions. but for your parents who were seeking, seeking a better life. and as this immigration question comes up, what are your thoughts on that, on how to address the issues of immigration, specifically illegal immigration, and also kind of remember the humanity behind it? >> i think there's just thousands of millions of, you know, folks who have been here in the u.s. since 1984, 1990. right. and i think creating a pathway to citizenship for folks who have been here in the u.s, i think can stabilize and continue the growth here in america, financially. and i think you know, folks are going to be able to give back, right, to their home countries. and maybe folks will will not, you know, have the need to come here to america because some of us want to stay in our home countries. it's just difficult financially. and so i

is now reviewing evidence from a southwest airlines boeing flight that experienced some unusual rolling motion in the air. >> the plane was traveling from phoenix to san francisco bay oakland international airport. this was on may 25th. that's when the plane went into what's been called a dutch roll. now, according to the associated press, that's a swaying movement where the plane actually rocks from wingtip to wingtip. none of the 175 passengers or six crew members were hurt, and pilots were able to regain control and then land safely in oakland, the ntsb said. it was only notified about this incident last week, and the ntsb issued this statement writing, quote, vehicles recorder laboratory in washington has received data downloaded from the airplane's digital flight data recorder. data from the recorder will aid investigators in determining the length and severity of the

event. the cockpit voice recorder, which is currently limited to two hours of video, was overwritten in and unavailable to investigators. >> i think, the press and aviation safety experts should be really on top of the pictures. and the operators and the ntsb and the regulator, the faa, to make sure that they follow through and find out what the cause of this incident was. and and, and do something about it and make sure it does not reoccur. >> a safety inspection later uncovered substantial damage to a unit that controls backup power to the rudder, which may have caused that swaying an iconic movie theater in the east bay is getting demolished. >> the berkeley city council voted to demolish the historic california theater on kittredge street, to build an 18 story, mixed use apartment and commercial theater space. the approved project is expected to preserve part of the theater's

facade and the marquee. the 110 year old building has been vacant since it shut down during the pandemic. well mayor london breed launched a new pilot program that creates public ev chargers along city curbsides mayor breed's goal is to install more than 1500 of these chargers by 2023, according to the city office. >> evs made up 37% of all new vehicle sales in san francisco last year. the city says these curbside chargers are essential since many residents live in multi-unit housing and lack off street parking. the city of berkeley currently operates under a similar curbside program . >> father's day is tomorrow, and americans are expected to spend a near record breaking number on dads, the national retail federation and prosper insights and analytics found that americans are spending $22.4 billion. believe it or not, this year that's about $190 per person. in comparison, consumers

the fog. here's a view from up above. a little bit of a west northwest breeze out there. do expect along the coastline, inside the bay, over parts of our hills, through the delta. those winds will pick up as we get into the afternoon. right now, temperature wise, we are warmer in novato by nine degrees, san jose by three, oakland by 258 degrees. to start your day in oakland in the north bay, 50 degrees in santa rosa for the inner east bay. we have to point out brentwood because you're taking the lead this morning at 66, our temperatures again are going to be just a little bit above average for some today outside of that very seasonal. but it will be the wind. right now we are calm. napa novato fairfield reporting an onshore breeze at nine miles per hour when it comes to the highs for today, there is a look at where we typically see our temperatures. there's a look at what we are expecting. just a smidge above the seasonal norm in san francisco. a better look at the numbers, including the winds and the extended forecast coming up.

400 service members while trying to stop criminal gangs and drug trafficking, newsom says the state's counter drug task force is holding smugglers accountable. the operation is called cal guard. it sees more than 62,000 pounds of fentanyl last year. that's 1,000% increase from just 2021. meanwhile, the clock is ticking for the governor and state lawmakers to pass a budget for the next fiscal year. state lawmakers passed a budget ahead of a deadline tomorrow, though it's not what will likely be the final final budget per state law. the assembly and the state senate will not get paid after today. if there isn't a balanced budget on the books. the governor has proposed a number of cuts and deferred spending to try to resolve a $45 billion deficit, the final version of the state budget, expected sometime next week. >> a new poll released by the public policy institute of california shows voters in the state have unfavorable views of their government leaders, the

poll shows. governor newsom's approval rating at 44. the number for the state legislature is even lower, with a 40% approval rating. the top issues mentioned when asked about california include the cost of living, housing costs and crime and drugs. the poll also shows majorities across most regions and demographic groups prefer fewer services and lower taxes, with a few exceptions. >> majorities across regions and most demographic groups do prefer less services and lower taxes, with the few exceptions, residents with incomes below 40 k are almost split 5050 on which option they prefer. and also 50% of african americans prefer to have higher taxes with more services, while 45% prefer the opposite of lower taxes and less services, according to the poll, the perspectives on the federal government are worse. >> 42% of all adults approve of the president. 19% approve of congress, 75% say the us is going in the wrong direction.

>> time now at 735, a group of inmates at san francisco county jail are turning their lives around. more than a dozen inmates earned high school diplomas while behind bars. graduation ceremony was held for them at the county jail in san bruno. the group took lessons from the five keys charter school, a nonprofit that offers a wide range of educational employment and housing programs for inmates and those who are recently released. >> it's a special day, or even the most special day yet for us, it is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life and just another step for our bright future. as i stand here right now, i want to express to everyone to never give up on education and on yourself. our journey has just begun. >> five keys was founded by the san francisco sheriff's office

in oh three as the nation's first accredited charter high school to operate inside a county jail. the nonprofit now operates throughout the state of california. >> san mateo county has approved a minimum wage raise for its employees this week, the board of supervisors approved a resolution increasing the base wage for regular county employees to $30 an hour. the resolution passed 5 to 0. the board of supervisors says it arrived at this $30 number after the county created a task force to determine the base wage. a county worker would need in a two income household, with one child. >> san jose sharks are making a $56,000 donation to the silicon valley second harvest, all in hopes of saving the food bank from shutting down. second harvest announced last week that it will be close. it will close, rather its largest warehouse, which serves half a million people each month. shark foundation telling ktvu they are
