county firefighters working to build containment lines with hundreds of people evacuated. it's nerve wracking. >> it's frightening. >> we've done a lot of training on making sure we know how to protect not only our our staff, but our property as well. so, so far, so good.
7:31 pm
>> this is ktvu fox two news at 730 and we are on storm watch. >> excuse me fire watch tonight. thanks so much for joining me on this monday night i'm heather holmes. let's get right to the latest on the point fire there in the north bay. it is spread over more than 1100 acres of land since it broke out midday yesterday. here's a map now of the fire in northern sonoma county. it's right near lake sonoma and it's threatening the heart of the dry creek valley wine region. obviously really important to that area. for an update on how the firefight is going tonight, we want to bring in robert foxworthy of cal fire. i know that you're really busy, so thanks so much for taking the time. you had a briefing about a half hour ago. have crews been able to make progress on containment? just want to check and see if that cal fire spokesperson is with me or not. can you hear me? okay, i think
7:32 pm
we're going to take a break. try to establish a signal with cal fire so that we can ask some important questions. obviously, a lot of concerns about how this fire is spreading, where the you know, where the evacuations are, if they're going to be implementing any more evacuation orders. so as soon as we get robert foxworthy from cal fire, i'll bring that interview to you. meantime, cal fire has unleashed its aerial firefighting tools on this fire helicopter and air tankers up above conducting fire suppression. those in sonoma county say they are hopeful that crews will, in fact, get the upper hand, but a little nervous that the fire could take off at any time. >> shocked and really saddened that it started this early. we're used to fire season and we've had we've gone through four of these, so it was very stressful. we, i call it fire stomach. you get you get a, you know, a knot in the middle of your stomach. >> firefighters have more work ahead of them, but with cooler temperatures expected tonight, they hope to make some headway. this is sonoma county's first
7:33 pm
wildfire of the season, and it is putting off a lot of smoke. perhaps you noticed it. i want to take a live look now outside at the golden gate bridge. the smoky conditions really prompting the bay area air quality management district to issue a spare the air alert. there is the golden gate bridge. you can see a little bit of haze there. so from the north bay to contra costa county and into san francisco, people say they're feeling the effects of this smoke. wood for wood burning is banned with people urged to try to stay indoors and also take public transit. and the national weather service has issued a red flag warning for much of the north bay interior mountains. this is through 8:00 tonight, so another half hour or so, gusty winds and bone dry vegetation. well, just making it easier for a fire to spark. so a lot of factors fueling this fire in sonoma county. mark, for us to discuss tonight. but thankfully those winds aren't as gusty as they were over the weekend. >> yeah. and this is not the traditional really defined strong offshore wind event that
7:34 pm
leads to huge fire growth here. but of course this is a major fire threatening community. so we're watching the conditions closely. take a look at the maps right now. as you can see, you can see that the layout here, there's healdsburg, geyserville up toward the clover up toward cloverdale. here is a lake sonoma. as you can see right now pointed out for you. and then here is the point fire as we coming closer to get a better look at the terrain. and here is dry creek as you can see running right near the fire zone as far as the current conditions out there right now. now you probably have noticed the winds, even the bay area in general. the winds backed off this morning. they picked up this afternoon. they're still a bit of a breeze out there with winds gusting with these sites around the fire zone, around 14 to 16 to 17 miles an hour. the key change today was the overall wind flow. we had drier conditions out there and as a result, these relative humidity levels have been coming down, coming down quite a bit. so those moisture levels coming down, that's not a good development but still fire crews have been being prepped for the change in the wind flow and also
7:35 pm
with with the changing conditions out there. here's the forecast model. still breezy for this evening as we head into tuesday morning, the wind speeds back off a bit. you'll see a wind shift. so this is tuesday morning, 8:00. the winds back off a bit. we have kind of hints of that northerly breeze. the wind coming in out of the north. and then as we take this into the afternoon hours, that typical westerly breeze accelerates. so this will be a change around the fire zone with the winds around 27 to 29 miles an hour. so it could be a bit gusty throughout the day tomorrow. here is that red flag fire warning in place in place for the. basically the hills of napa county until 8:00 this evening up towards solano county. that's until 8:00 tomorrow morning. we could have winds around 20 to 30 miles an hour. of course, it's very dry out there. and in terms of the air quality, as heather mentioned, we still have a bit of some haze out there, but the bulk of the smoke that was probably more noticeable this morning because we had a lot of fire growth last night into this morning. things tend to
7:36 pm
stabilize overnight as a result. you get that smoke layer, but still the possibility of course, of that fire still burning that could impact air quality once again as we head into your tuesday, we will have more on your forecast coming up in just a little bit. okay. >> thanks so much, mark. so we were able to reestablish our connection with the cal fire spokesperson, robert foxworthy. robert, really appreciate you taking the time. so i was asking earlier about progress of this fire. i know you had a briefing just a short time ago. what does containment look like at this hour? >> so containment still stands at 20, but i would think the bigger number that i'd like to put out there is the fact that our acreage has an increased. and that's a that's a huge factor in, in the fact that we haven't had any additional growth of the fire today. so i would think that's probably the better number to focus on at this point. >> yeah. that's great. so it still stands at just over around 1100 acres. what communities though could be in the fire's path? what are the areas that
7:37 pm
you're most concerned about tonight? >> well, the same areas as yesterday that that dry creek valley along, dry creek road in those areas are the area that i would say are primarily threatened. but with the, the lack of fire activity we saw throughout the day, it's looking considerably better than it was yesterday. >> okay. that's great. so is it safe to say that you do not expect any more evacuation orders, you know, i can never make a complete, guarantee, but things are looking considerably better than they were yesterday. and throughout the day. >> okay, that's certainly good news tonight. i understand, though, that a firefighter was injured. are you able to update us on the condition? >> so a firefighter was injured last night, with, an injury to the neck. he was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. okay. >> good to hear as well. okay
7:38 pm
so, robert, your biggest concern as we head now into the overnight hours, you know, i would i would say my concerns are actually going down a bit right? >> we usually have a decrease in the winds and those humidities coming up. so what i'm actually really hoping for is that our crews can continue to make progress overnight and get those containment numbers up as well. >> okay. well, i like your positivity. but as we all know, i mean the fires have minds of their own and they can take off at a moment's notice. but obviously know cal fire is working diligently to make sure that all people and property are safe. robert foxworthy of cal fire really appreciate your time tonight. thank you sir. >> thank you. >> well, firefighters have their work cut out for them really all across the state. want to go now to calaveras county firefighters. they are battling a fast moving wildfire near the community of copperopolis, around 40 miles east of stockton. now, this fire is called the arrow fire. it began earlier today and has already exploded to more than 900 acres.
7:39 pm
it is 0% contained. evacuation orders are in effect. firefighters say the strong winds making it a bit difficult to establish those containment lines and a massive brush fire has forced hundreds of people out of their homes in los angeles county, the post fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and is 20% contained. the fire is located along interstate five near the grapevine. the flames engulfed part of a parking lot near the freeway, burning several vehicles, but the road remains open. about 1200 people in the community of gorman have been ordered to evacuate because of this fire. the fire started saturday and is now spread to parts of ventura county. crews are asking and are using an aggressive air attack to try to halt the fire's forward progress, but they are facing some challenges due to limited visibility and a reminder that you can stay up to date with the weather. with our ktvu weather app. there you can find a seven day forecast as well as hourly updates, and you can also send us photos of any
