birmingham has been remarkable. and if you are a willie mays fan or a giants fan, it is truly poignant. i'm going to step out of the way because this is about much more than baseball this week, right? this is about honoring the legacy and paying homage to the great say hey kid, you can see this massive mural that was unveiled yesterday in downtown birmingham to honor willie mays, and it was planned well before his passing, but obviously now it has become a special place for fans to come and take photos and to see this beautiful mural. you can see even someone left some flowers at the foot of the mural. there so on this trip, also, the way they're honoring willie mays, the giants community fund brought some very special guests , a group of willie mays scholars from san francisco that scholarship program creates opportunities for black youth in san francisco. this week, the students have been on an intensive tour of the civil rights movement in birmingham, selma and the surrounding area. birmingham, of course, ground zero for the civil rights

because now that he's gone, it's like we're like the living like legacies for him. so it's just like doing our best to fulfill that, you know, role and honor. >> we also want to add and show you some video that at rickwood field in the small museum there, there's a very special exhibit, the hall of fame plaque of willie mays from cooperstown has traveled here to birmingham, alabama. it's the first time the plaque has moved since mays was inducted in 1979. fans have been able to take pictures of it with it and just marvel at his career. we spoke to a fan that traveled from the city about what it means to be here in birmingham. >> he's very near and dear to my heart. i wanted to be willie mays when i was growing up, you know, everybody did, but to be here now, i really am very humbled. and i'm trying to hold back my emotions right now. but, very special time. >> and so that is certainly the sentiment that we're hearing from a lot of fans, especially

students told me that they've always been told you don't know where you're going. if you don't know where you have been. and they said they have learned about it. we've all read about this in the history books. they have made movies about this. they've recreated that famous march they did with john lewis. and so they all have talked about those things, but they said to be there to stand there, to feel the emotion of the civil rights movement. they said, truly was a once in a lifetime experience for these students from san francisco that they said they will never forget. >> ktvu is greg lee with the cool jacket. greg, nice report. thank you so much. thanks, sal. you can watch today's game between the giants and the cardinals at rickwood field right here on ktvu pregame starts at 230 after the game. joining us for our special post game coverage. we're paying a special tribute to mays with some memorable moments you may have not seen before or dug into the archives there. >> that's going to be an incredible show. and back here in the bay area, the say hey experience honoring the giants

9:19 am
will be on display right in center field, and fans can sign a memorial, a memorial book. >> yeah. so off the field now, mays fought for civil rights during the height of the civil rights movement, and as a teen, he rose to prominence playing in the leagues in the deep south. then later, when the giants moved out west from new york, he faced housing discrimination in the primarily white sherwood forest neighborhood, and despite mays popularity, the seller refused his offer after neighbors complained about a black family moving in. mays was often criticized for not being more outspoken, but he stood up for civil rights in other ways, like fundraising for youth activities in hunter's point, he was very much so for uplift ing, the black community and doing any and everything that he could do to move our plight forward. so in 2015, he earned that presidential medal of freedom from then president barack obama, who said it's because of people like willie mays that a black man could even think about

where we are learning about an fbi investigation on the street where oakland mayor shan tao owns a home. ktvu james torres, joining us now with the details of what we're learning so far, james. >> pam. good morning. well, we've been here since about 830 this morning and since we've been here, we've seen some fbi agents and they're wearing badges. they've identified themselves as fbi agents walking in and out of this home. gloves out. they've chatted with us for just a moment just to let us know that they're here, but wouldn't give us any specifics as to what they're actually doing here. this home, we've learned through a number of different public records, is connected to current oakland mayor xiang tao. now, what
9:31 am
exactly is going on? what prompted them here? those are questions we are still asking. we have reached out to the mayor and the mayor's office and her administration. we've not heard any statements from them at this point. we've also talked to some neighbors, people who live nearby on either side of the home here. one neighbor telling us that he didn't really notice much, he didn't really see some of these cars and some of these agents coming in another neighbor we heard from who said that she picked up a little bit of something about six this morning. we'll let you hear her side of the story. >> about 6:00 this morning, i heard a male voice yelling to open the door. open the door! i assumed it was a domestic violence. it was maybe a man who was put out of his house and did it. because i'm from law enforcement, i a thought came, you know, is that the police and i expected to hear more noise. i expected to hear, more shouting.
9:32 am
and when i didn't, i just assumed it was a family disturbance. and so i went back to sleep and, like i said, about 6:00 and a couple hours later, i looked out the window and saw multiple federal vehicles, moving their vehicles into the driveway. agents gloved up and going in and out of the residence. so i recognize that it was a significantly different situation than what i had earlier thought. >> again, we've not yet heard from the mayor or the mayor's office. we've not seen the mayor here either. the only people really one person that we've seen walking in and out of this house is at least one fbi agent, again, who identified themselves as an agent. and we certainly don't want to speculate what is going on here. we're going to wait until we get the facts before we actually share with you. but we do certainly want to point out the severity of this.

9:37 am
treatment program. and methadone can only be received from one of these opioid treatment programs. and so you know, one of the barriers for these patients is how quickly can they get doses of take home methadone so they don't have to come in every day. and really, the issues around patient provider trust. so providers are sometimes hesitant to give patients multiple doses of take home methadone. and then it makes it harder for these patients to do things like, you know, pursue educational goals, have a job, take care of their kids. and so our app helps patients, by giving them the opportunity to demonstrate how they're handling their medication, listen to their provider so that they can get more doses of take home methadone and ultimately, you know, reach their recovery goals faster and stay in treatment longer. >> so you're bridging this, this gap in terms of how you get your hands on methadone to treat the opioid addiction, that that's what your app is doing. >> yes. it's really making methadone much more feasible for patients who really want to just
9:38 am
have a normal life than it ever previously was, because we're really reducing the amount of time the patients spend going to and from the clinic clinic and then waiting in line at the clinic. >> so if i'm understanding this, it's like your treatment that you would go to pick up at a pharmacy, right? your doctor prescribes it for you and you regularly can go pick it up, because right now you can't do that. you have to go into, into a program and so forth to get this methadone. >> right. and so, you know, our app doesn't change how you get the methadone. it changes how many doses of methadone you get at the clinic, so, you know, a common, kind of journey for a patient without sonora is that they will need to be in treatment for several months before they get, you know, two weeks of take home methadone, on sonora, we typically cut that time in half. and so on average, our patients have double the number of take homes, compared to someone who's not on sonora but has been in treatment for a similar amount of time. >> all right. so, the way this works, right now is how does the
9:39 am
app, factor into this in the qr code factor into all of this? >> so patients will receive their take home methadone bottles from the clinic on the bottle. there'll be a qr label that's been applied to it. that's part of our patented system, patients, when they're at their home, they'll log in to our app, and then they'll go through a guided experience for how to scan the qr code and record the ingestion of the methadone. >> and that is what really the issue is here is how does the provider make sure that the methadone is properly being used by the patient? >> yeah. so that's a key concern for the provider. and for community stakeholders. a methadone, if you know, if someone who are opioid, someone who was opioid naive or to take methadone, it could be potentially a lethal overdose, and you know, we know the vast majority of patients are trying to do well and diversion isn't particularly common, but it's something that we really need to be, there for. and then just you know, to make sure that everyone's being accountable for
