3:18 pm
from the eastern part of the city to the western side of the city. and gaza, around 300,000 palestinians are already asked by the israeli forces to leave gaza city and go south. overall, a tense situation that has been exacerbated followed by the developer and taken place that only because of the bombardment but rather because of the very large-scale displacement. it reminds the palestinians of the first days of the war and even worse than that. amy: can you tell us about the reports that flyers are being dropped all over gaza city telling everyone to leave? what exactly this means? we are seeing the palestinian red crescent has said its teams are receiving dozens of humanitarian distress calls from

residents in gaza city where the ambulances and medics are not able to enter because the red crescent described the intensity of the bombardment of the area? what is happening in gaza city? >> the intensity of the bombardment in that area, gaza area with the israeli forces asking around 400,000 palestinians were living in gaza, including also internally displaced people, to head south. they were describing the route and saying they are safe routes to make it to that shelters as described by the israeli forces. fortunately, there is no safe haven in gaza. no place is safe according to the descriptions made by the commercial general of the u.n. that means -- not only in gaza

their eyes and the ability -- one of them lost four limbs, a child, baby boy who lost his four limbs. i don't think you can ever be able to imagine the level of distress that has been caused. people have been communicating with the red crescent society or people who were trapped under the rubble of their homes. the story of a family that was targeted in gaza city and around 19 family members were killed and the only survivor who was 19 years old was communicating with the palestinian red crescent and was telling them he cannot help his family and that his mother was killed and that she is on his lap and his father is screaming from under the rubble and seeking help and his brother and sisters were also seeking help by screaming and no one could help them because the palestinian red crescent society cannot go to those areas were some fighting is taking place.

that is horrifying. if you allow me, i what to alert you to something even more important. i think what we're witnessing today, probably the most dangerous day and this whole war on gaza. this whole aggression on gaza. the israeli army is trying to evict hundreds of thousands of people from gaza city, from northern parts of gaza, in an effort to completely ethnically cleanse gaza city. there threatening people that they will bombardment -- babar them if they don't move. the people are refusing to leave. they say we are ready to even face death but not leave one more time by the terrible israeli forces who are trying to ethnically cleanse us. we cannot take this insult one more time. i think that is why it is dangerous. i want to explain that what
3:35 pm
netanyahu is doing now with his -- what his fascist government doing now and gaza is trying to achieve through this terrible been barred met you just described which took the lives of more than 40 people and through this act of trying to ethnically cleanse all the population of gaza city, i think he is aiming at three goals. the first one is to undermine completely any negotiations that are taking place to achieve a cease. and any negotiation to stop this aggression that is taking place on the people of gaza. second, i think this reveals the real intention of netanyahu and gallant and also the israeli government has not changed. the main goal is the total ethnic cleansing of all of gaza people and all of the gaza strip. and finally, i think this shows netanyahu's intention is to maintain the occupation of gaza. he wants to completely
3:36 pm
ethnically cleanse the whole of north of gaza and gaza city as well and then concentrate the israeli occupation in that area and then move forward. that fits well with the news we have just received that the israeli army it has already started building permanent bases of the military in the northern part and in gaza city. this is a very dangerous element, dangerous moment. it will carry in itself two major risks -- total ethnic cleansing of gaza city with an addition to that terrible, terrible massacres that could happen because people are refusing to leave and the israelis will start bombarding. this would not have happened if it were not for this terrible sadness from the whole world. if it wasn't from the cover that was provided to the israelis, including, the american administration.

$20 billion in military aid from your administration, the american administration, from your taxpayers to those who are committing now three war crimes in parallel -- genocide, ethnic cleansing, and collective punishment, including starvation of children and women and civilians. this is unacceptable. what is happening and gaza will have a terrible impact on the whole world because it sends one message, that there is no international law anymore. that there are no human rights anymore. that anybody who is power can do whatever they want whenever they want and as they want. that is the message that is getting out. that is going to be terribly undermining situation for the security and safety and peace all over the world. i think the responsible here is the biden administration who could have done much more to stop this war and stop this atrocity.

mean the end of his political career. he will be investigated for his failure on the october 7. you will be investigated for his failure in running this war. and he will also be presented to the courts for four cases of corruption that are following him, each of which would take him -- he doesn't care about anybody. he cares only about himself. as i said i wanted your programs, this man is willing to kill his mother to stay in power and now he is risking the lives of hundreds of thousands of palestinians and maybe the lives of many israelis because all he cares about is his own interest. but that is not only simply as personal interest, he is sitting in a government that is increasingly fascist. he has fascist people in his government like smotrich and ben-gvir and these people want a total and complete ethnic cleansing of all palestinians. they speak frankly and openly.

about executing all palestinian prisoners. that all palestinians must be evicted not only from gaza but from the west bank. smotrich keeps telling we should go the west bank was settlements and settlers of palestinians will lose a state of their own and then have to live, which is ethnic cleansing, or except subjugation, which is apartheid, or die. which is the genocide they're trying to commit now in gaza. it is a terrible situation. netanyahu will not be restrained except with palestinians sanctions immediately on his government. amy: dr. mustapha barghouti, thank you for being with us, palestinian physician, activist, and politician who serves as general secretary of the palestinian national initiative. usually in ramallah, speaking to us for the first time in years from washington, d.c. coming up, dozens of war leaders

amy: "soldier in the army of love" of tom marella featuring his son. this is democracy now!, democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman. president biden is hosting heads of state from nato member nations for a three-day summit in washington, d.c., to mark the 75th anniversary of the nuclear-armed military alliance. nato has expanded from 12 founding member states to sweden 32. is at the summit as a full nato member for the first time. now ukraine's path to membership in the alliance is "irreversible" according to a leaked version of a joint declaration expected to be released today.
3:50 pm
in his opening address, president biden pledged further nato support for ukraine against russia's invasion. pres. biden: the united states, germany, the netherlands, romania, and israel will provide ukraine with equipment for five additional strategic air defenses. in the coming months, the u.s. and our partners will provide ukraine with dozens of tactical air defenses. the united states will make sure that when we export critical air defense interceptors, ukraine goes to the front of the line. amy: also on tuesday, biden awarded the presidential medal of freedom to outgoing nato secretary general jens stoltenberg. the incoming nato head is former dutch prime minister mark rutte, who has been called "the trump whisperer" for an episode in 2018 when he convinced trump that nato funding from other countries was increasing as trump had demanded. rutte is seen as someone who

could deter trump from leaving nato if he is re-elected. over this past weekend, and anti-nato protest was held in washington, d.c.. speakers included sevim dagdelen . >> we need peace instead of nato. we need at long last to stand up for democratic and popular sovereignty and to reject the indignity of being a basil state of washington, which is just about all we have gotten from the ruling coalition in berlin. peace not nato. amy: german lawmaker sevim dagdelen joins us now, still in washington, d.c. she is a member of the german parliament with the wagenknecht alliance and member of the nato parliamentary assembly. her forthcoming book is titled "nato: a reckoning with the atlantic alliance." her new piece for consortium

news is headlined "75 years of nato = 75 years of denial." welcome back to democracy now! if you can explain why you came to washington, d.c., and give us your history of nato, what you think is most important to understand. >> thank you for having me, amy. i think the most important thing about the history of nato is that it is a history of denial. that they have three great myths. the first is that it is a defense alliance. and at least after 1999 with the aggression against the federal republic of yugoslavia, we know it is a war alliance. they breached international law. they were bombing for 79 days. even television stations, the chinese embassy, and 20 years of war in afghanistan, the
3:53 pm
aggression again in iraq, 2011 against libya that shows us a lie of a defensive alliance. the second is they are in alliance collective of democracy against authoritarian regime. this is a historic lie, just one example, one example, one of the founding member states was under salazar who tortured african in concentration camps in mozambique, angola. so nato has no problem with fascist dictators. even the bilateral treaty between the united states and the spanish dictator franco was at stake. and the third myth of nato is they are and alliance of values and human rights.
3:54 pm
how can you talk about human rights and values if you still have the torture center in guantanamo bay where people are tortured in the war on terrorism of the united states or 14 years of prosecution of torture against a journalist like julian assange whose crime was to expose u.s. war crimes in iraq or nato war crimes in afghanistan or even, according to the well-known brown university in the united states, that in the last 20 years, the wars of the united states and their allies killed more than 4.5 million people? and it will look to gaza, which is unconditionally supported by the united states and nato, and especially, for example, from germany, we see it is hypocrisy
3:55 pm
to talk about human rights of their complicit to all the crimes done by the israeli government. i mean, killing 15,000 children in gaza, cannot justify that with the legitimate right of self-defense but this war was more than 15,000 dead children is not an act of self-defense anymore. the nato is complicit to this war, so do you have this great move and i think was about time on the 75th anniversary to do a reckoning with all this crime. amy: one of the summit's crucial goals is to offer ukraine and irreversible path to nato membership. of course, ukraine president zelenskyy is in the united states right now. how sustainable is nato's continued military support for ukraine? do you see it getting in the way
3:56 pm
of any kind of negotiation that would end the war? >> first of all, we have to say the nato head of state and government are going to deepen their strategy in the proxy war in ukraine. that means even more weapons and even more money for ukraine. and on the others, less money for their own population for health care, education, for infrastructure, or affordable social housing. because this is the other side of the coin that they have social cuts on the others to finance the money going to ukraine and to weapons. i found it very remarkable the last days, even though i do not agree on many things of the hungarian head of state mr. viktor orbán, but i found it very remarkable how much he is

being criticized for just trying to have a dialogue. and i think it is the right way to go what he is doing with his trips tokyiv and then moscow and beijing and now in washington. he is trying to have a dialogue because whoever wants to stop the killing in ukraine, he has to send diplomats, not weapons. amy: let me ask you about germany where you are from. you are member of parliament there. the u.s. is the largest arms supplier to israel. germany is the second largest arms supplier. this is the 75th anniversary of nato. what are the implications of nato's support for israel right now? >> the implications are that the nato lost -- even if they had at least a tiny little bit of moral integrity, they lost every moral integrity at least in the global

south with their unconditional support in part very extreme right wing government of benjamin netanyahu. even in europe, for example, we do have support for recognition of palestinian state like ireland, spain, and norway because they want to stop -- amy: in sweden has already done it. >> yeah, and they what to stop this unconditional support. you have rising contradictions in crisis within the european union and the nato states according to this unconditional support. in germany, it is rising because as you said, where the second-biggest supplier of weapons. we have been lawsuited before the international court of justice in the hague. nicaragua did in indictment against --
