you shot me! i was like, oh my god, i do not know what to do here. i am scared to death. >> what story did she tell? >> she was terrified of him. >> you know you're not supposed to be hair, get out of here. i have a gun, leave! >> was it an incident that got out of control? or this was planned? it almost seemed a little rehearsed. >> i saw her mugshot. here we have this young, talented actress. we did not know the full story. >> this is absolutely crazy. she is not who she says she is. did someone put her up to this? i had that nagging in my mind. there was more going on here. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> hello, and welcome to dateline. shane moore was shot to death on a sunny, summer afternoon.

in that instant, a bitter family feud turned fatal. but, was shane's killing a crime? to crack this case, investigators had to wonder what happened moments before the shot rang out. there was no question who fired the gun it was something else that the shooter did that blew the case wide open. here is keith morrison with killer all! >> this is a horror movie. oh yes, a horror movie with all its requisite darkness. it's setting, it's spine chilling story. it's disturbing characters. [crying] but really. >> we stop! >> where does performance and? and reality began? >> 9-1-1, emergency. tell me what the emergency is? >> all i can tell you is that a gun went off. >> this is also a story about

family, about abortion, accomplishment, sharing. >> are you in danger? >> yes. >> is the person that did the firing of the weapon? are they there now? >> yes. >> so, yes, a horror movie. matthew and his daughter trinity live in the mountains in southern oregon, isolated, yes. but not very far from the town with a shakespearean festival. artists of all kinds. trinity and her dad had evolved into a talented act. it quirky joe performing as musicians one night, comedians annexed, and stage actors whenever the chance came along. >> i was 14, i was going into the ninth grade. >> and that is when trinity said to her dad, why do not we make a movie? >> i thought, let's just do it. we will be fine.

>> our main goal inside was to get a story and a script played out. >> in these mountains, miss are as persistent as the rain. here, some people are swearing to see bigger wandering through deep woods. and the undead might just be a story, or maybe not. so what movie did that and daughter right? from the dark, they called it. >> it ends up being a movie about isolation. >> it's kind of a film about the human response to fear, i think. >> yes. >> trinity's that had been saving for a motorcycle. instead, he hired a screen writer, a director, a musician, and then? came casting. the lead character, valerie, was in nearly every scene. the success of the film would be riding on her shoulders. but, by the final day of casting,. >> we were just kind of sitting

in the audition room and we were like, we have not found our valerie yet. >> valerie or damon. >> we were kind of freaking out. >> action! >> get back to work you savages! >> and then, she walked in. >> and they just blew it out of the water. >> i am valerie, i do not know if you remember my name. >> she was wyn reed. >> such a phenomenal actor, it was insane. we absolutely adored her. >> make windows, red for the valérie, part two. >> i remember we got to this really dramatic scene and i was trying very hard to use every ounce of my acting training to try to get this right, and then we could hear wyn reed rehearsing with her seen partner and she had absolute panic in her voice. at first we thought something had happened. we thought, oh my god, is everything okay over there? oh my god, no they're just

rehearsing the scene and they're just much better than us! >> i don't want to do that. >> meg was cast as the grumpy housekeeper, that's her with the braided brown hair. the star, clearly, was wyn reed. >> a few of us are staying at a cabin, we are going to have some drinks and it will be fun. >> shooting began at a château deep in the mountains. -- the stranded staff of a mountain lodge slowly realizes that one of them is a killer. and when wyn reed was on the set? they sensed they were in the presence of greatness. >> she could easily put out an emotion the entire film. she turned on like that. she would walk into the scene with tears, let's do this, let's go. >> i think it's time for you to go to bed. >> megan admired wyn's acting to. but something bothered her. strange as it sounds, she had a feeling that wyn was, well, not wyn.

she could not be sure. the hair was very different and her face? well, maybe. yet wyn reminded meg a great deal of an old high school classmate. a woman named tucker, tucker reed. >> i really had a strong inkling that that was her. she looks so much like her. >> did she seem to recognize you? >> no. >> it was just so peculiar. new meg and this tucker reed had been in place together in high school. >> i remember thinking, i could really see her being someone who will succeed professionally. >> the high school tucker, meg remembered, also had a very, well, president mother. kelly was her name. always around. >> her mom would come to the theater to help her with her hair and makeup. >> but, memories can be tricky. and now, years later on the

movie set, meg began to doubt hers. >> i was 50/50 on it. >> you weren't sure if it was the same person or not? >> i was not sure! >> until the day a woman, introduced as wyn's relatives showed up on set. >> and i saw that her relatives had a bag full of hair and makeup stuff. >> meg recognize her instantly. the relative was kelly! tucker's mom! >> and it just took me right back to high school seeing that. >> meg was now convinced that her hunch was right. meg was really tucker. but she decided not to tell anybody. and she did not. until shooting wrapped, and all we're back in town. >> and she was like, i need to tell you something about wyn. well she is on trial for murder. >> was it possible? their movie color was a killer? >> a murder case in real life.

that >> reporter: movie was a thriller called from the dark! >> what the hell are you doing? >> it turned out that the filmmakers were in the dark. only after they wrap the shoot that they found out that they're leading lady, wyn, was really name tucker. and that in real life she had shot her own uncle to death! >> when i watch the movie now, i feel like someone is messing with me. it is a sick joke in a way. that i do not get. >> hard to understand why tucker would addition for a role like that. or why she would kill a man. >> i was absolutely sure that she was going to kill my mother. >> -- on another on camera appearance. the day is july the 26, 2016. tucker is at the police station. >> she seemed, to me, just on

first blush, a meek mannered young lady that seemed upset. >> tony young was one of two detectives that heard firsthand just hours after it happened. tucker's account of how and why she killed shane moore. the brother of tucker's mom, and sometimes makeup artist, kelly. it happened to tucker's grandmothers house of in the country. >> it was told to us in a way that painted the picture of it shane moore coming in, trying to come into the front door of the residents and kelly fighting to keep him out because he was coming into seriously assault or kill kelly and tucker. >> my hand goes around the door. >> right. >> and he was pushing himself to the door could not be closed

in. >> how are you holding the gun at this point? >> it was only in one hand. i sort of remember having it in the air. >> you made the conscious decision to fire the gun? >> i do not think, no. tell me about that. >> because to fire again, i always thought you had to calk again. this gun does not do that, it just fired! >> she did not know how the gun worked, she said, and it happened so fast. and she did not warn him, she said. >> can you and your best words, in your best recollection tell us, as you can, exactly what you said to him? reenacted for us. as loud as you need to be. >> you know you're not supposed to be here! get out of here! i have a gun, leave! your violent! we all know you are violent, get out of here! very loud, there was no mistaking at. >> tucker's mom, kelly, still

visibly agitated told the same story about this frightening attack. >> i'm telling you that moments before my brother that, he was assaulting me with the door. he was screaming at me, he was trying to force his way into a house he had no right to be. i did not know what she was going to do. it was horrifying! >> how did this mother and daughter ever get caught up in a killing? these are two very accomplished women. kelly was once an attorney, left the field to coauthor with her husband, the best selling true crime book, deadly medicine. which later was adapted into a major tv movie that appeared at nbc. but tucker, along with her mother and sister she coauthored to young adult novels. even narrated the audiobook versions. >> amber was in an odd place at a rainy hour. >> she was ahead of the curve

at any rate. >> tucker's, that danny reedy. >> i wasn't surprised she became a good writer. it was sort of directing the frantic period that kelly and i were trying to write something that the public word by. that she was going into. the stories we're just in the air. >> the biggest story of tucker's childhood? was the unraveling of her parents marriage. >> our kids grew up in a very, kind of like a war zone psychologically and emotionally. it was a very tense atmosphere that they were brought up into. >> later, while attending usc, tucker accused her boyfriend of raping her. and when the university said it found no evidence of rape occurred, she held a press conference. >> i believe the weaknesses could be pinpointed, and fixed. >> after college? she moved back to or again, developed her acting skills. and two years later, shot her

uncle to save her mom! >> did he ever threatened to kill you? >> yes. >> to hear this well educated, well spoken woman tell it, this was a clear case of self-defense. after police left the interrogation room, she seemed to fall apart for a voice of what she had done. [crying] and yet. >> i had that nagging in my mind, that there was a lot more. it had a lot of different tendrils that there was mark going on here. [crying] >> indeed there was! >> coming up! >> it must seem very strange when you went to the house. >> as soon as the door shut, it was strange. >> a simmering family feud, and a shell-shocked witness in the middle. >> and i went, oh my god that is a 38! >> when dateline continues! continues

keith morrison (voiceover): the story >> the story that tucker tucker and her mom, kelly, told and her mom, kelly, told the police was astonishing! like the plot of some hollywood thriller. it started, of course, tucker. who, in an epic struggle with her violent, drug addicted uncle shane literally saved her mother's life. >> uncle shane is a meth addict, he is crazy. he was trying to come in and he was trying to hurt me. >> it was a heroic tale.

lives were saved, they said. plural. but as detective young asked his questions, it began to dawn on him that something else was at stake. money. lots of it. which led to a whole other version of the story. listen carefully, it may sound more like an episode of, say, succession or game of thrones. once upon a time, shane had been an attorney insulin francisco but drugs got the best of him. and in 2001 he moved on to the family ranch. where he took care of both the land, and his elderly parents. >> my brothers helped my father with the property, taking care of it. >> ryan and rhonda moore are shane and kelly's brother and sister in law. >> as my dad deteriorated, chain took care of them. as he got worse, he was wheelchair bound, and my brother would carry him from the chair to his bed or the

shower. there was plenty to do. and he did it. >> cheerfully, willingly, good guy in other words. >> a good guy, i personally think he was the kind of nicest person in my family, after my dad. >> shane's sister, kelly, meanwhile, that divorced and the parents bought her a house in town. about 30 miles away. where she could live with tucker and her two other children. the parents plan was, when they passed on kelly would keep the house and she and chain would split ownership of the ranch 50/50. but, complications. >> once my dad died, everything changed. >> the problem was, as kelly admitted to the police, she needed money now. >> i do not have any money. i was looking to get food stamps, i am that broke. my mother is taking care of my family with her property wealth. >> kelly's mother did that for her by mortgaging the ranch, which did more than put money in kelly's pocket.

it diminished the value of chains portion of the inheritance. >> it was just money going out, constantly going out. >> so you are aware of declining value of that place? >> yes. >> shane must have been aware of it to? >> yes. >> they argued, kelly filed assault charges and took out a temporary restraining order against shane. which -- when kelly entered the home, shane had to stay out. then kelly cooked up another plan to keep shane in line. >> i was going to adulterate the well with additional language that said if anything happened to my mother, or my family. that he would be immediately disinherited. >> well, shane heard about that and came up with his own idea. he asked his mother to son over the property now to both him and kelly 50/50. by filing what is known as a grant deed. that would prevent kelly from taking everything for herself. it is also what touched off this whole, bloody business.

>> had he explained on the phone that there was a feud going on between them i might not have gone. >> this is carla tribe or. on july 26, 2016, the day of the shooting, shane hired carla to notarized this gratitude. but when karla finally got to the remote ranch house, shane was nowhere to be found. >> must have seemed very strange when you got to the house? >> as soon as the door shut it was strange. >> carla did not know about the restraining order that kept shane from entering. was surprised when she was met instead by three intense women. tucker, her grandmother lori, and tucker's mom, kelly. who seemed upset. >> she kept yelling, she is like what do you need? what do you need? what are you doing here? >> tucker was standing, silently and our dark corner in the kitchen. >> and i saw her out of the corner of my eye and i said, oh, excuse me. hello, how are you? and she goes like this.

just puts her hand up, never said a word. >> carla tried to proceed with the signing but shane's mom could not find her i.d.. though she was sure it had been sitting right there in front of her. so as friend of shades went to find witnesses that felt for her identity. >> the entire time after that door shut, everything was off. >> while they sat at the dining table when-ing for the friend to return. carla said that she double checked with shane's mom to make sure that she knew what a grant deed was. >> and she said yes, she understood all of that. and i said okay. and, kelly was like, i thought this was a well. and i said, i do not know anything about a well. and she said, are you sure it isn't a will? i said i'm sure. and she grabbed it in my hand, tore it up into pieces. >> did she yell at you? >> she was telling the whole time. she was very excited. >> up until now, carla had never laid eyes on the man who

had hired her, shame. they communicated only by text. >> i look up, and here's comes somebody else out of the window. walking up from behind the house. and i said, oh, well maybe that is him. and she said, yes that is my brother. >> then, she said, tucker who had been all but invisible. suddenly appeared. >> tucker came up and there was a towel on the table, and she had reached underneath the towel and when she brought it back this way in my head i went, oh my god that is a 38! >> coming up! a single shot of gunfire brings a hail of questions. >> i kept thinking, how in the -- the that bullet push him clear over from the door to the ground? >> when dateline continues! ne continues

home, carla tribe or but like she had just walked into a scene in a horror movie. a scene where everyone else knew the lines but her. oh, and one of the actors had a gun. a real one this time. >> i do not really know what tucker is doing, because she is behind me so. >> with a gun? >> with a gun, right! >> what happened next was so traumatic, carla had to be hospitalized afterwards and still suffers from ptsd. this is the first time that she has publicly told her story and we can see her demeanor is a defense mechanism, she is still terrified, recalling the seed. tucker, with a gun, her mother yelling. >> this guy meanwhile is coming towards the house? >> yes, he was not coming in. he was just coming up towards the patio and so, kelly went to the door and said, hey, what is going on? i thought we were signing oh

will. and he was like what? what would we sell a? well >> piloted here the conversation. but from where she was sitting, she could not see shame. >> all of a sudden, they were saying, mom, look out. he's coming in! fees coming in! over my shoulder i couldn't see them at all. >> so it was it coming in as soon as you could tell? >> i didn't see him coming in. and then she went towards the door. >> she, tucker with a gun. carla did not see what happened next. but. >> i heard the gunshot. i was like, what just happened? and then i heard him shout, you just shot me! oh my god, oh my god, i did not know what to do. i was scared to death. >> i can imagine. >> after that, tucker went to her room. and i remember thinking, there is a phone on the table, so i grabbed that phone and i kept trying to dial 9-1-1 and i put

it up to my air, like this thing would not work. kelly came around in front of me, and i said oh my god. you need to help me call 9-1-1. and she goes, now. and the phone dropped on the floor. and i looked at her and said, you better go into the bedroom and get the gun from tucker. cause i did not know if tucker was gonna come out, and shoot as, shoot herself, i did not know what was going on. >> but the intensity was totally ramped up this whole time? >> oh yeah. >> the amount of adrenaline here? >> for everyone i think. i was going crazy. and kelly comes back with the gun down to her side. and i am trying to hold it together, and i am like, kelly, just give me the gun and give it to me by the grips. and she goes, no, and i am like what? i go, kelly, look here. i am really shaking. i just need you to hand me the gun by the grips. i just want the gun. and she leaned down, and got into my face and said i said no. and i was like, okay, i do not know what to do.

so i was holding that phone in the kitchen and i told you i was trying to dial 9-1-1, it did not work, it did not work and it starts ringing and i just push the button. and i said hello? >> hello, who's this. >> this is county 9-1-1 emergency. >> yes, i need somebody out here right away. i need an ambulance. >> tell me what the emergency is? >> i didn't see anything, all i can tell you is that the gun went off. >> okay, listen to me, they are on their way. are you in danger? >> yes. >> and she kept saying to me, get the phone to someone near the victim. then that gave me the idea of how i was getting out of their. so i grabbed all my stuff, i had the phone in my hand, and i said here, talk to 9-1-1, i have to go. >> when she stepped outside, carla saw shade. like halfway off the porch. >> and i kept thinking, how in the -- did that bullet post him from the door, to the ground? it was four feet, five feet, it

seemed away from the door. >> he was nowhere near the front door when he was shot? >> no. >> put me in your shoes, in your brain when you are walking from the house to your car, 100 feet away? she still had the gun? >> she has got it done. and i remember looking at her, and i thought, whatever. if you are going to shoot me, do it. i stepped over his body, the hardest thing to do. there wasn't any other place to go. so i had to step over his body end go to the car and i remember i thought, do not turn around, do not turn around. get into your car, and leave. and i got into my car. i did not know what to do. i felt like i was probably in shock. >> her memory is still vivid. seeing shane's body on the outside edge of the porch. he had not been inside of the house at all. which is not the story that tucker told police. >> so, my mom was against the door and trying to push the door and i could see shane, he was trying to get in. i. >> i am telling you moments

before my brother died, he assaulted me with the door. >> that discrepancies helped to convince the dea to charge tucker with manslaughter. but it might not be easy to convince a jury. on trial. her own lawyer give it to the prosecutors as evidence. >> how did you learn about the video surfacing? when did it happen? >> that was two years later. and i received a call from the case agent and he said, you are not going to believe this. you have to come to the sheriff's department. when he pushes a button on his computer, i draw hit the floor. >> tucker had recorded the entire, deadly incident on her cell phone. here is kelly, and the grandmother, and the notary and shane's friend, carleton looking for the grandmothers drivers license. >> here is my usaa card. >> then, tucker swings the phone around to show shane pacing outside of the house. >> shane needs to stay away from the property. >> tucker puts the phone down. but picks it up again. 33 seconds later. >> yes, this man, this man. he threatened this woman's life, my mother.
