right away, terry could see something was off. >> instead of being this way, the car was turned this way. basically taking the two, possibly three parking spaces. >> he stopped, he put on gloves. he handed me a pair. he said, just to be on the safe side. >> terry elvis couldn't understand it. the last time he heard from heather was when she sent that photo from her date. she was fine. now she was nowhere to be found. he was searching her abandoned car. >> on the center console, her driver's license was there. >> that's weird. >> a couple of other business cards, identification cards. but there were no keys. >> that is when the officer said something that made his heart skip a beat. >> he said, let's take a look in the trunk. i went back, i turned the key, he said, let me open it. i said, just let me lifted.

>> he held his breath as he laid to his daughters trunk popped open. >> were you worried? >> i was scared to death to open the trunk. we both looked in, it was fine. there was nothing there. >> there was plenty of clutter, no signs of foul play. at that point, bree had gotten word that her best friend heather was missing. >> i called her dad, who was with police at the time at peachtree. he had asked when the last, talked to heather was. >> bree told the two men that heather had called from their apartment a day earlier around 1:30 a.m. tuesday, fresh from her date. she was saying, i had an amazing date. i'm supposed to see him tomorrow when he gets off work. >> the bree said heather didn't want to chat about the new guy. she was upset about a call she got from the older man she once dated. weeks earlier, he dumped heather.

checking into the hospital. >> she knows it is expensive. she would have called me and said, hey, this is what's wrong. what do i do? >> so the couple did what they could, calling family and friends. no one had heard from heather. eventually, one relative cleared at the hospital mystery. >> we found out that the heather that was in the hospital is my cousin's daughter, named the same thing. we did had the middle name. just the first and last. >> what are the odds? that it is a heather elvis at the same time going to the hospital? >> it was puzzling. >> so where was their heather? confusion was turning into fear? >> it felt like something was wrong. >> her sister morgan arrived home. >> had they told you what was going on? >> they hadn't. i just kind of picked that what was going on through conversation.

>> that heather -- >> was nowhere to be found. >> that is where it retraced -- dawned on them, they could retrace. she was still on their family friend plan. >> i ended up going online to our cell phone provider. they pulled of the information. they emailed it to us. >> they can see the most recent calls their daughter made and received after her call to bree. heather dialed another number several times. >> these early-morning calls? >> and i'm like, whose number is this? >> the worried parent suddenly found themselves playing detective in the real case of their missing daughter. >> we google the number, trying to go out what they want to. >> and they got the hint. belonged to a man named sidney. they figured that had to be the ex-boyfriend bree had mentioned earlier. >> he was like, i want to call him. i said, you can call someone in

the middle of the night. >> he did anyway. on the other end, a man answered. the way terry recalled, the man was not happy. >> i said, you don't know me, but i'm heather's father. heather elvis. before i could get the next word out, i'm getting cursed out left and right. >> cursing about what? >> nothing. just cursing. like, don't [ bleep ] call me. i don't know what you are talking about. i don't know this person. >> that is a very odd reaction. >> that's what i thought. >> the man who had dated their daughter was denying he had ever heard of her. as the hours tick by, terry and debbie grew more anxious. they knew calling family and friends wasn't enough. they needed a new plan to find their missing daughter. coming up, two new on chemical use. someone at a pay phone. >> it appears this is someone she knows. >> right.

about her. just a little things, the calls, the text, checking on her at work. >> there was a big problem. sydney was married, although heather didn't seem to mind. >> heather had in her head that he was going to leave his wife. she swore up and down. >> bree knew that would never happen. sure enough in 2013, sydney's wife got news of the affair. he broke things off with heather. >> it hurt her. it hurt me to see her go through that. >> sydney told police he was home the night sydney -- heather disappeared. police went back to her phone records where they saw the call to sydney. they also found a mysterious number they had never called heather before. investigators traced it to a payphone at a gas station. a security camera was pointed right at it. >> this random pay phone number

called heather's phone. called it once. it lasted about four minutes. she actually tried to call that number back multiple times. >> marissa from nbc affiliate covered the case. >> it appears this is someone she knows. if she is having a conversation lessening that long and repeatedly calling back. >> right. >> was it sydney? they pulled the footage. >> you can see somebody walk up to the payphone and placed a call to heather elvis. >> police wondered if that somebody was sydney. they asked him to come in for another round of rationing. if he had been home, what was he doing get a payphone calling heather? he finally fessed up. >> sydney told them in an interview with police, i made that phone call to heather. >> investigators began to build the timeline from her phone. at 1:35 a.m., sydney called

heather from the payphone. nine minutes later at 1:44, heather called her friend, bree. between 2:29 and 3:05, heather called the payphone nine times, but no one answered. her phone did connect to his cell phone for 4 minutes, and then from 4:25 to 4:37, her phone was in the car. but where was sidney at that time? police didn't know. that is until a woman told police her home had a security camera. perhaps she thought it captured something around the time of heather's disappearance. >> around 3:30 in the morning on december 18th, you can see a dark pickup truck go by her home. >> police believe it was sidney's truck . it was a huge break. police thought that they could now place heather elvis in her car, and sidney moore in his truck, heading for peachtree landing at the same time.
