good day to all of you from msnbc headquarters here in new york. we begin with decision 2024. president biden will return to washington tonight to begin extensive debate prep with this white house chief of staff. he is leaving california with a record-breaking $30 million in campaign cash. at last night's fundraiser, he also took the supporters about the supreme court. >> the next president is likely to have two new supreme court nominees. two more. two more. he has already appointed two that have been very negative in terms of the rights of individuals. the idea that if he is re- elected he is going to appoint two more flying flags upside down is really -- the supreme court has never been as out of

kilter as it is today. i mean, never. this is never been a court this far out of step. >> the biden 2024 chris murphy defended the president's remarks. >> i think it's a crisis on the court, in particular with justice alito and justice thomas. what justice thomas is engaged in is just a graft. got a major political player on the outside who absolutely have political and business aspects in the court paying off the justice. justice alito is openly displaying affiliation with political causes in public. i think it would be irresponsible for the president not to talk about the fact that this court is becoming brazenly corrupt and bracingly political. >> donald trump will meet with mike johnson at mar-a-lago. trump has asked johnson to help him overturn his 34 count hush

money felony conviction, and trump allies say they are looking to the supreme court for that. >> for this to be overturned, it's going to be happening two or three years from now. we all know this. that's what happened in lower manhattan to interfere with the lower election, which is why speaker johnson and many americans leave the supreme court should step into this. any reaction from milwaukee residence to nubians he sponsored billboards highlighting and trumps use of the word horrible to describe crime in their city, which is hosting the republican national convention next month. >> coming here in a couple of weeks, i think it takes an awful lot of ignorance to say something that negative before he's coming, if he really thinks he should be president. >> we have several reporters in place ready to go for all of these new developments. we begin with aaron gilchrist, following by president biden in

los angeles. what did we hear from the president last night during his record-breaking fundraiser? >> well, president biden and former president barack obama had a wide-ranging conversation last night with jimmy kimmel. they focused mostly on the work that biden has done during his time in office. there was also a lot of comparison to former president donald trump as biden try to make the case for why he should stay in the white house. he told the crowd of hollywood a listers and influencers trump, quote, doesn't care what happens to ordinary people. they discussed misinformation, widens recent g7 summit in italy. efforts to reform immigration policy, as well. some of the strongest remarks were about the supreme court, and he said the next president will likely get to nominate two new justices, and said that this right-leaning court is out of step with americans. the biden harris campaign actually provided msnbc some video from last night.

watch this. >> after the decision that overruled roe v wade, you had clarence thomas talking about the fact that there are going to be other things we should reconsider, including in vitro fertilization, including contraception, including all these things. and -- and by the way -- by the way, not on my watch. >> the campaign says this event hauled in about $30 million, 2 million more than the original projection here, 4 million more than a similar event held in new york city a few months ago. the campaign started this month with nearly $200 million. and says that all of this money is going to go toward opening more coordinated campaign offices around the country. there are already more than 150 of them. they will create more ads to speak directly to voters, and

the next big fundraiser we know is an lgbtq event in new york city. that's the day after biden debates trump later this month. >> is going to be hard to top 30 million, but you never know, they can go for. tank you very much. let's go now to former president donald trump wrapping up a weekend in the swing state of michigan with two different events. one of the black church, the other at a conservative youth conference with a distinctly -- and some harsh rhetoric from trump supporters on the speakers list. >> are we at war? is this a political war? are you prepared to leave it all on the battlefield in 2024? >> nbc's tosha burns joins us from detroit, michigan. >> reporter: and his first of two events here in detroit, mr. trump hosted a roundtable with

pastors at a predominantly black church as part of his continued effort to try to win over african-american voters, especially men. it was the trump campaigns most direct lack voter outreach program yet, speaking to a racially diverse crowd of about 200 and claiming that president biden is, quote, the worst president for black people and arguing that the black community is hurt worse by illegal immigration. he then went to another vote an event hosted by turning point action, a group catering much more directly to the base, and there he argue that his legal troubles will only help him, stating that his poll numbers have gone up with every impeachment and indictment. >> people of listened, and that's why the polls are higher. i'm the only one in history who got indicted in my numbers went up. i'm the only one in history. >> reporter: just two weeks away from the first presidential debate, mr. trump, just turned 78, challenged 81- year-old president biden take a

cognitive test while incorrectly stating the name of the doctor who administered his back in 2018. >> i think you should take a cognitive test like i did. i took a cognitive test and i aced it. dr. ronnie -- dr. ronnie johnson. does everyone know ronnie johnson, he was the white house doctor. he said i was a healthy as president, he feels, in history. >> interesting. in fact, that was about ronny jackson. also new today, some donald trump supporters on capitol hill weighing in on the former presidents talk of pardoning january 6 defendants a few days after trump visited the area. abc's julie sirkin is at the capital with more on that. what are we hearing today? >> not just supporters of the former president, but those potentially in the running to be his running mate in the november election, they talked on the sunday shows about the former president comments, not

only echoing what he had to say about considering pardoning january 6 defendants, including potentially violent ones, and also downplaying trumps comments. the former president said that he would enter pardoning all of the defendants charged and convicted with trespassing here in the capital on january 6th. take a listen to what some of them had to say, including john cotton and tim scott. >> he said he would consider it. i think what that means is, he would take each case on a case- by-case basis. i do think there is a strong case for many of the defendants to be pardoned because they did engage in acts of violence. >> anyone who attacks an officer should serve time. the question is, for those nonviolent folks who sat outside, who actually simply protested or came to the capital because the doors were open and created no crime, no challenges, those folks today

are sitting in pretrial. that's a devastation. >> for 500 defendants were sitting in jail now because they were charged with violent crimes on january 6th with coming into the capital, with trespassing, with attacking capitol police officers, in some cases violently causing those officers to ask variance physical trauma, mental trauma including those who i still talk to this day and have to work through that mental trauma. you see supporters defending his actions. the former president came here to capitol hill. not directly in the capital, but around this complex to meet with republicans and to meet with allies. the dnc, the biden campaign actually had a billboard following the former president between his event with republicans replaying about the former president said on january 6, in their words, inciting the insurrection and telling his supporters to come right at the capital in his defense. >> we actually saw a video that yesterday. thank you very much.

israel, however, is clarifying that war operations will continue certainly elsewhere in southern gaza. joining me now from tel aviv is matt bradley. what are the terms of this local pause, if you want to call it that, and what impact will it have on getting more aid into gaza? >> as you said, it's a local pause. it is without any real end date. and it was announced a day later. apparently this started yesterday, saturday, and it is going indefinitely or until further notice. it is a local pause. it is just for that one road leading to the crossing that is one of the main crossings for shipments into the gaza strip. that road goes kind of all the way into the heart of gaza. this is just right on time. because of what we are hearing earlier this week is that gazans, large parts of the gaza strip are facing catastrophic hunger and malnutrition. and that is something that is a particularly affecting children.

there some 8000 children, according to the world health organization, who shown signs of acute malnutrition. it comes as we are seeing an uptick in some of the israeli deaths in the ongoing fighting in the gaza strip. they announced that 11 people have been killed in the gaza strip yesterday. eight of them in just one incident in what looks like -- what we heard from the israelis, was annexed lotion against some sort of armored vehicle. now, we are only getting bits and pieces of this, but that would make it one of the most deadly single incidents ever since israel first invaded the gaza strip back in october. we've seen other incidents, but this is been the most deadly incident for several months. so this is a situation that is, you know, really raising temperatures here. we've already heard from the right wing. he's a minister of national security. he came out and said that this decision, about these whole day

long pauses in fighting in this one road -- to be very clear, this is not a cessation of hostilities. he said whoever was responsible for this decision shouldn't be in their position any longer. a lot of anger from the right wing. at the same time, a lot of international pressure demanding the biden administration put pressure to bear on israel, to bring in more shipments of goods, and that the israelis do so as well. remember that that sort of floating pier that the biden administration had put up just back a couple of months ago, it is once again being disconnected from gaza, from land, because it is in anticipation of poor weather, and they are worried it can get damaged once again. we saw that pier was bringing in a lot of humanitarian goods . without that, it looks as if some of the pressure on the israelis to open up and allow more food in, that has been working. >> matt bradley, thank you very much for the update there from tel aviv. joining me right now, democratic congresswoman from north carolina, deborah ross.

she's a member of the house judiciary and ethics committees. i thank you for joining us, congresswoman. we should note this is a muslim holiday, and israel is planning to suspend operations near the southern gaza border to allow aid into the region. we just heard that from our colleague, matt bradley. president biden's cease-fire proposal remains on the negotiating table. he does not expect a deal soon after hamas rejected parts of that proposal. is there more that the administration can do to help and this work ? because it remains a big concern, particularly for young voters here in the u.s.. >> well, i am very encouraged that humanitarian aid is being allowed in. that is the responsibility of all of our partners. israel, yes. it is also a responsibility of egypt, which borders gaza, to help with humanitarian aid. i know that the biden administration is working

around the clock to get a cease- fire, have the hostages released, make sure there is humanitarian aid, and advance a two state solution. but just as you said, hamas has already rejected this deal. we need to continue to put pressure on both sides for the good of innocent palestinians, for the good of israel, and for good of the region. >> interestingly, this morning, congressman rochon a joint bernie sanders pledging to skip benjamin netanyahu's address to a joint session of congress. he said he won't sit for a one- way lecture. will you attend? >> well, what we don't know is where we are going to be in this war. i am very hopeful that we will be in a much better place. we also don't know where mr. netanyahu will be, because

there is a lot of internal conflict. so there's a long time between now and when that address will be made, and we will see how things develop. >> you make that point because nancy pelosi was quite stringent in her comments, saying that he may not even be in office by the time we get to next month is weak. again, my question to you, what is your calculus on whether you're going to attend? is it something where you say, here's a threshold, i will be there. here's another threshold, i won't. >> i can't predict what's going to happen between now and the end of july. and so i am very hope full that we will have something to celebrate by the end of july, and that it will be a good situation. but again, as nancy pelosi said, we don't know what will happen, and we don't know what will happen to mr. netanyahu. >> here's something we know that happened. it was the turning point

people's convention last night in detroit with marjorie taylor green, taking the stage along with other approved headliners. take a listen to some of what she said. >> if you don't feel good about the election, there is nothing wrong with protesting it. and there was nothing wrong with protesting the election on january 6th. and any democrat -- that's right. in any democrat, any person from the mainstream media, and anyone that wants to continue to shame us for january 6th can go to --. i am sick and tired of hearing how everybody is like, we are going to win in november, and they are practically measuring the drapes for the white house, and i am sitting here going, i think they are going to steal it. >> you know what i'm sick and tired of? we will leave it at that. donald trump also reiterated a familiar refrain, saying the 2024 election could be rigged. this congress need to prep for

another tumultuous aftermath to an election? >> there is absolutely no question that congress, the military, the capital police, and the american people need to prep for another tumultuous situation. and we know that the justice department is already preparing for that, and we've heard that from our attorney general. this is not going to be a walk in the park, no matter what happens. but we are now alerted, and we have to be prepared. and i will go on to say, that marjorie taylor green's comments have been violent, wrong, and a violation of her oath of office. and it is simply unacceptable. and it is unfortunate that her colleagues will not hold her accountable. >> i guess it's hard to do when

it appears her constituents won't. and those that were attending that conference did not. we do know that donald trump was back at capitol hill this week for the first time since the insurrection. he was embraced by the republicans there, including many that had been openly critical of trump. how do you assess the change of trump? what were the comments near the scene of the capital riot? >> well, the only thing that personally affected me was that two of my committee meetings were postponed because folks wanted to go and worship at the altar of donald trump. i will tell you that not all republicans felt the same way. i ran into one of my republican colleagues on the way to one of the committee meetings, and i said, you know, you are early. and he said, well, i would rather watch grass grow. and so i think there were many people that were with him, but i think there were many people

who are deeply uncomfortable with the situation that he has put them in and the country. >> interesting response. that did get a laugh. supreme court ethics remain in the headlines after a senate committee reported justice clarence thomas failed to disclose three private jet flights paid for by a republican mega donor. last night, when president biden was asked about samuel alito's controversial upside down flag that hung outside his home, he said the supreme court has never been is out of kilter as it is today, calling it out of step. how much do you think the president is reflecting american's views on the court today, and how can these ethics concerns be addressed? >> well, chief justice roberts can address these ethics concerns. as a matter of fact, the entire court can address these ethics concerns, and that has been done in the past. my colleague, jamie raskin, wrote an op-ed to the new york

times outlining precisely how it could be done now and how it has been done in the future. the question is whether or not they have the will to hold themselves to the highest equitable standards. if this kind of situation happened in congress, it would immediately be within the ethics committee and would demonstrate a violation of the ethics rules for members of congress. the problem with the supreme court is that there is nobody above them. they are appointed for life. they are not accountable to the public, and that means the supreme court has to police itself. and i'm hoping that there's growing dissatisfaction within the court that after this term is over, which should end in the next couple of weeks, that there will be an internal reckoning. >> we shall see. congresswoman deborah ross, thank you so much for your time.

doc? threats of retribution and revenge and a new report in the new york times on how government officials and civil rights groups are preparing for the worst of trump wins in november. his plans include using the justice department to go after adversaries, deploying the military to democratic cities. mass deportations, putting migrants and camps, putting oilers in the civil service and expanding executive power. it's not surprising biden and his cronies are working overtime to stymie the will of the american people. trump ally steve bannon elaborated on the allies remarks at a conservative event yesterday.

>> we are coming after lisa monica, merrick garland, the senior members of doj that are prosecuting president trump. jack smith. and this is not about vengeance. this is not about revenge, this is not about retribution. it's about saving this republic. we are going to use the constitution and the rule of law to go after you and hold you accountable. november 5th is judgment day. january 20th, 2025, is accountability day. >> 20 me now, joyce vance, law professor at the university of alabama, cohost of the hashtag sisters-in-law podcast, and nbc analyst. let's just throw in good friend of the show, too. how chilling is it that steve bannon is naming names? >> so for somebody who is saying it's not about revenge or vengeance, he seems to

contradict himself pretty quickly. the people who do those things day in and day out and are committed to the constitution, those folks aren't looking for retribution. and i think it is chilling to hear what is going on here. this is payback for donald trump being held accountable. but bannon, who is a master of this sort of linguistics tries to couch what they are doing and what is on constitutional in constitutional terms like accountability. and that forces all of us to be very discerning listeners and to really do more than i think we've done at any point in time, even living through the trump administration to make sure we understand how our rule of law system of government should work and where problems are taking place. >> in terms of the rule of law and how our system of government should work, is there room for people to be accused right now of overreacting? how much power can trump assert if he becomes president again?

>> well, we don't have to speculate about how much power trump will assert. he already told us he plans to be a dictator on day one. there's an 800+ page document called project 2025, and this is republican policymakers setting goals that are consistent of those with the second trump administration, and many of them set us on the path towards authoritarianism if they don't actually knock at the door and take us through it. >> here's something extraordinary. the times article says that some officials are trying to democracy proof institutions ahead of the institution. what can institutions do in such a short time? >> i think that this is an important question, and something that we have to say is, there are legitimate policy objectives for every administration, and if donald trump is re-elected to the presidency, he is entitled to

pursue those objectives. he has to do so in a fashion that is consistent with our country's laws and with the constitution. so it is legitimate for agencies to set aside policy stances that set forth their obligation, the limits on their authorities, and what they must do. it is a great example. the criminal prosecutions it undertakes, those are not part of the white house's prerogative to direct. prosecutors by long-standing legal and policy issue, and in this country, make decisions based upon the law. their decisions are tested, by the way, by grand juries in the first instance, trial juries, and by the courts on appeal. it is not like prosecutors are running amok. it's important that we emphasize those institutional constraints, those guidelines, and protect those institutions about an overactive white house.

>> president biden was asked about trump's rhetoric at the fundraiser last night. the idea that he is actually threatening retribution, this is the united states of america. did you ever think that you would ever, ever, ever hear anything like this? i guess the question is, can the courts be relied on to protect democracy? >> well, it will take the car courts, and i think the problem is, the minute that you make the sort of comments, if you say that you are concerned about authoritarianism, people push you aside is someone who is too emotional or someone who is imagining crazy things. but something that we understand, and people like myself who study democratic institutions and others were far more scholarly when it comes to authoritarianism understand that this often happens in countries that are under threat, that the voices that say we need to look at what is happening, we need to be careful about our future, that those voices are all too

often ignored or pushed aside. this is the moment when americans, while they still have the ability to vote this november, need to take these issues very seriously and think through the implications of staying home versus voting and the choices that they make in november. >> why do you think the supreme court has yet to issue a ruling on presidential immunity ? >> not surprising to see a difficult case like this hold for the last couple of weeks of the term. the supreme court term ends formally in the last week of june. occasionally, they have gone over into early july, and this is looking more and more like one of those terms. i have a lot of cases left. the ones where there's either a last-minute push for the court to arrive at a unanimous decision by doing a little bit of concurrences and dissents, where the cases where it's impossible for the court to rule unanimously. is a deeps in the court. those important cases tend to come out at the very end of the

event in detroit last night organized by the concerning group turning point action. meanwhile, president joe biden and former president obama together for a star-studded fundraiser in while issuing dire warnings of a second trump term. joining me now, don calloway, democratic strategist and host of the caucus room podcast. glad to see you both. i know he's celebrating father's day. getting with you, susan, biden and obama, they were very focused on the stakes of the selection in this fundraiser last night. does it make some of their point for them were donald trump is once again casting down on our election system? >> i think it gives a certain weight to the issue, having a former president obama and joe biden talking about it, because of their respect for the office and for the country.

but donald trump has been talking about this for over three years, and he's going to continue to talk about it until election day. and nothing is going to change that. as a matter of fact, i'm willing to bet that if we look at the debate next week, every question will somehow come back down to election -- to the election being rigged. >> hang on. if he wins, does that change his tune? >> yeah, but i think what he would do is double down on 2020. he couldn't just let it be. >> trump last night tried to mock biden for his verbal gaffes. let's take a listen to what he said. >> i think you should take a cognitive test like i did. i took a cognitive test and aced it. doc ronnie johnson -- does everybody know ronnie johnson, grossman from texas? he was the white house doctor, and he said i was the healthiest president he feels

in history. >> i just want to point out one little problem there. the doctor who administrates the test is ronny jackson. is it getting harder for him to convince people that it biden, the one with the cognitive issues? >> trump has never sounded coherent, so the good thing is, he started from a very low bar to begin with and also just turned 78 this week, so there's no real functional difference in age between these two men. i think they are both perfectly mentally competent. i want to go back to something susan said and that you asked her at the very end of her remarks. you said, will it make a difference if he wins? it's very important that we all remember the trump said he was cheated for the election that he actually won in 2016. he has been planting this lie not just from the biden election, which he actually lost. he said there were 3 million

illegals that try to vote in '16 or he would have beaten hillary by moore. his distrust has always been part of everything he's done from the very beginning. >> he was annoyed that he won, he could not win with the popular vote. many fewer americans actually voted for him. >> absolutely. but he won the election by electoral college and he still was upset with that outcome. his thing has always been the outcome, even if it is one that is favorable for him. >> what about marjorie taylor greene, who had several inflammatory remarks at this event last night, doubling down on the false claims of election fraud in 2020 and defending january 6th. we played what she said earlier, and how much with this type of rhetoric from someone close to donald trump turnoff swing voters? >> if they keep letting marjorie taylor greene go on stage like this, it's going to have a huge effect on donald trump with swing voters. because she is the extremist that moderates are afraid of.

about it. and there have always been significant ideological and generation gaps, and we are seeing it very clearly over the palestine issue, over the student loans issue, and various other things that black folks frankly don't think we've gotten out of the progressive biden administration, even if it is successful. i will close on this. it's important to know the black folks have never had the luxury of being english you voters. as many of us are upset about palestine, we start probably very good reason to vote for joe biden. democracy, which is at stake the selection, is so much bigger than just being able to boil it down to one issue. >> point well taken there. me ask you this, because we've got more details on the first debate of this campaign cycle happening june 27. cnn says each campaign's mic will be muted when it is not their turn to beak, and there will be two commercial breaks.

we already knew there was not going to be a live audience. what are your predictions? are they going to be able to keep this thing civilized? >> i think most donald trump productions and up beyond the pale of what we thought was acceptable. i am highly disappointed in a number of democratic operatives who allowed trumps wild behavior in 2020 to remove this debate from where it has always been. this one was going with a crowd and with interaction, so the idea that donald trump has already thwarted democratic norms is very real here, and i've been disappointed to see the president's campaign capitulate to that, because there's no controlling donald trump. there is no situation where we create a controlled enough environment and ecosystem that he will go off because there's no respect for any of these norms and there's no idea to believe that he would respect this. >> where are you on the debate, susan? >> don't be surprised if donald

the last couple of hours a 42- year-old michael william nash, investigators say, is america's latest mass shooter. they say he is a white man who lived in the area with his mom. he has no criminal history. they say he may have had some mental health issues as of late, but authorities didn't want to elaborate on what that means. they also say they have no idea why he chose the splash pad here. this is suburban detroit. the scene of his attack yesterday, you can see an eerie contrast. we have what looks like hazmat crews cleaning up the sidewalk here. nash showed up around 5:00 yesterday evening. he brought a nine millimeter handgun and opened fire on the crowd. lots of families, firing they say at least 28 times and reloading multiple times. nine people injured, no deaths. but among the injured, an eight- year-old boy who authorities

say was shot in the head. he is in critical condition. they say his four-year-old brother was shot, as was the boy's mother. both of them are in better shape. they are stable. but as you can imagine, to say people here are in shock is a huge understatement. take a look at this. >> it was heartbreaking, saddening, devastating. nothing like this has ever happened around this area. i drive this every day, i see the kids playing and happy, i see families out here every day getting ice cream. >> and authorities say he is deceased now. and you will never know. how frustrating. >> yeah. that is so frustrating to me that we will never know why. >> you saw that woman owned a small business in the area. she owes a salon, and if anybody would know around this area, have you ever heard of michael william nash? she said i had never heard that name before. i had no idea who he was.

moderate republican? >> here's what i can tell you about the list as it stands right now compared to the much broader list that we saw, and you mentioned it also including senator lake. the list right now has one thing in common. all of those candidates are seen in republican circles as fairly serious. and you know, they are credible as well. they have served in the senate, it looks very different, let's just say, in the broader list. and you know, i've heard that people close to trump say that he likes doug because he is measured, he is seen as competent, and that can also be said of a couple of those others, like jd vance, like marco rubio with his foreign policy. that's one big difference between a couple of months ago and where we stand right now. >> give me a sense of what he brings to the ticket. he's measured, donald trump likes that. but what does he bring to the

ticket? >> he brings a lot of money. he also brings the sort of can- do attitude. what i mean by that is he is very happy to do what the campaign want. even right now, now that the campaign has been sending him into some of those swing states, north carolina, new hampshire, sending him out to meet with state republican parties. but at the same time, he is not that loud about it. so you know, he is kind of steady, he is a businessman, and also, he is seen as a leader in his state. those are the couple of things that doug brings, in addition to the fact that he is very loyal to the city of north dakota. >> let's talk about ron desantis, who was once considered a potential vp pick

before he and trump spent months mudslinging during the primaries. if your new article, despite that, donald trump is taking several pages out of the florida governor's playbook. how so? >> even before ron desantis ran, trump was really taking lots of shots at him, because he sought ron desantis as his biggest opponent. but now, trump is very much going to be the republican nominee, and we hear trump on the stump repeating some of the same things that ron desantis has already signed into law in florida. those include eliminating squatters rights, those include a parental bill of rights. you know, we heard ron desantis talk about defunding schools, preventing gender and race being taught in certain ways in schools in florida, and that is something that trump is promised to do. and we've also seen that desantis has come out against the central bank of di
