senator jd vance will campaign together in michigan. it is their first joint rally appearances donald trump named him as his vp pick during the republican national convention. this was a convention which served as a reminder of trump's total domination of the republican party, despite a promise of unity, the same old trump came out the moment he went off script, repeating allies of a stolen election and blaming democrats for his legal troubles. meanwhile, president biden is expected to spend the weekend recovering from covid at his home in rehobeth beach. the list of congressional democrats calling for him to exit his campaign stands at 35. on friday, ohio senator sherrod brown added his name to that tally. joining us now to discuss is former florida congressman carlos korbel a. >> congressman, congressman, where you in milwaukee? >> you know, unfortunately, i could not make it.

>> i did so [ laughter ], carlos, i tell you, we would not have been welcome there for a lot of reasons but i want to pick up on something that symone led us in with, this idea that this whole convention, i have to give props, well orchestrated, well- run, well-timed, a lot of, i mean, you cannot fault the administration of this event but you can when it comes to this idea of unity. you have had a lot of conversation, that was the push, particularly after the shooting in butler. i would like to play for you trump's unity, sort of, conversation where he talked about in our age of politics. let's hear what he has to say about our age of politics. >> in an age where our politics so often divide us, now is the time to remember we are all fellow citizens, we are one nation under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. [ applause ] >> they are destroying our country. we have to work on making

america great again, not on beating people. we won, we beat them on all of it, we beat them on the impeachment and we beat them on the indictments. >> i don't know how unified you felt after that but this idea that this was about unity, trump really couldn't bring himself to nail that, could he? >> well, michael, i will tell you, we could go, after the horrible assassination attempt, i think we were all pretty shaken by that but i heard, right, we were talking about how donald trump would tear up his speech and come up with something new and really tried to bring the country together. i will confess, when i saw him monday walkout at the convention, it did seem like a different donald trump. i was hopeful. i said, you know what, he does seem a little more humble,

little more thoughtful. i will tell you, that speech really missed the mark, his campaign set very high expectations for what it would mean for the country. honestly, for what the country needed from an acceptance speech at this point in our history. it really fell short. it just divided the country. you really kind of saw trump's instincts come out as the speech continued, right? the divide and conquer nature that trump has could not help but shine through. >> you had donald trump talking about unity and when you heard about unity from jd vance, it was really only about unity within the republican party. that was the message. that was interesting, given that there were a lot of republicans that felt in choosing jd vance, trump and the people around him say, you either get on board with our mac division of the world or you get off. that was repeated in punch bowl

news, choosing the term, choosing the first term gop senator from ohio is a brazen middle finger to the few trump skeptics left in the party. >> i agree with that. it was two things, one, a projection of confidence or overconfidence. i thought marco rubio, for sure, would have given donald trump the greatest political boost in november was skeptical republicans, republicans who don't like donald trump and also hispanic voters, maybe. they passed over marco rubio for someone who speaks directly to the trump base. that is exactly what they went for, they say the people that matter here are the strongest supporters of donald trump. this is no surprise, alicia. since donald trump was first able to get into power, once he became the republican president in 2017, the number one factor in republican politics has been

loyalty to donald trump. he demands absolute loyalty and that was reflected in his vp pick. >> it is so interesting though, because in the lead up to this convention, prior to the assassination attempt, it was really laid out what the trump campaign, what their strategy was, if you will, they talked about expanding and making a play for places like minnesota, like, really, a political organizer who cut his teeth in virginia politics said virginia is on the table in this cycle. then you go to jd vance and to your point, congressman, this is not an expansion, it is not a play for suburban women, it doesn't look like it is a play for black men or latino men, it looks like it is a play for base, base, base, base voters. i don't know how, in a general election, you win places like minnesota and virginia doing

things like they did at this convention last week. >> well, that's right, symone. this is also indicative of how trump and his organization work. your right. she is brilliant, brilliant strategist, i think she is the reason donald trump made it through these primaries and is where he is today but at the end of the day, the trump campaign, the trump organization is a family business. who made the decision? the son of donald trump. they said this is the guy who will help us keep this going. this isn't just about, you know, uniting the country or trying to win this election, this is about who is best suited to help us keep this going, this family business and the trump campaign, trump

politics, it is basically just another division of the trump organization. who made the decision on jd vance, it was the family and probably overruling some of the strategists on the campaign. >> to build off of symone's point about the base voters and how you position yourself as a candidate to win a national election, you have nbc news reporting there was nikki haley who took more than two months to endorse him after her lost white house bid speaking to those who had doubt about trump. there was ron desantis, an challenger releasing an attack on president joe biden. you have these two figures, both of whom challenged trump bending the knee to him after they were similarly vanquished. yet and still, trump is speaking , particularly at the end, where 20 %, 25 %, the republican base, folks have to understand the republican base is not just trump and maga.

there are a lot of republicans who are not part of that. that is where nikki haley, those were the folks she was drawing. what happened there? is there any way they can get those voters to kind of sit on the side or is that a play for joe biden? because i don't see anybody really making an effort to bring them in. >> well, michael, i think that if the democrats can get organized, [ laughter ] >> here y'all go. >> trump and his campaign. >> we got to talk about the democrats next, okay? >> if the democrats can get organized, i am sure you will get to that later, trump and his campaign will regret the missed opportunity this convention was. i think you're right, michael, what you said at the beginning. it was well-organized. it was made-for-tv.

it was produced by donald trump himself and scripted by donald trump. for what they wanted, they did a very good job. now, in terms of expanding the tent, something you have dedicated a lot of time to when you were chairman of the gop, they did not do that. i think that is because they fundamentally don't want to do that. they want to bring in their people, they don't want to have to make any concessions and they don't want to have to make any concessions to the center or people who have been critical of donald trump and took too long to apologize. that is not who they are. again, the democrats could get organized and that would be very costly to them in november. >> i appreciate that. it is critical what you just said, call us, if it were stolen, i am only concentrating my effort around the select part of the elector, meeting my hard-core base. that is not enough to win. when i don't win, of course it was stolen. carlos curbelo, i really

♪♪ so the biden-harris campaign is telling staff to stay focused on beating donald trump is a growing list of congressional democrats press for president biden to bow out of the race. sources are telling nbc news the president is angry, as i think you should become over attempts to push them out. according to two people familiar with the discussions, here we go, president biden's family members have started to discuss a possible exit and what it might look like. however, that white house spokesperson says that is not

happening. joining us now is democratic congressman james clyburn of south carolina. good morning, congressman. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> look at that tight smile. >> michael, what do you want to say? congressman, a lot of questions but before we get to that, breaking overnight, congresswoman sheila jackson lee of texas has passed. she announced she had pancreatic cancer in june. i know you put out a statement but just, we wanted to start with just your thoughts and reflections on your friend and colleague, sheila jackson lee. >> well, sheila jackson lee was a very, very good friend. we worked very closely together. you may recall that i spent time as the democratic with and she, in both instances, was my assistant whip. she was one of the people to help me with the caucus, create a strategy necessary to get a

bill passed. as you know, we were very, very successful in getting the votes that were necessary for the bill to pass. sheila played a very critical role in that. on a personal basis, sheila was a schoolmate of one of my former students. when yale announced they were awarding me an honorary degree, we had a virtual meeting for that. just in the middle of that meeting, was sheila jackson lee. i had no idea how she found out about it, how she got the pass to go to it. she was in the middle of it. she was just that way. she was as creative, as

innovative as anyone i have ever met and she demonstrated that time and again. she was very, very smart and astute politician. >> and very crafty at getting that pole position at the state of the union for the president. [ laughter ] >> she was the best i ever saw at getting in the middle of the picture or the front of the line. [ laughter ] >> she would show up. >> i mean, congressman, she also was a supporter of the president. her last tweet that she put up from her account was the time is now to unite behind the president and get to work beating donald trump one last time. have you spoken to the president, mister clyburn, since he left las vegas? >> no, i have not. the president, as you know, i was with him for two solid days. i was in the airport on wednesday trying to get back to

north carolina and meet with the leaders of education when i got the call he tested positive. the director of education said he tested right away. i had to go straight to the urgent care facility. i did get tested. of course, it was negative. i have not talked to the president, he is quarantined and i want to respect all of that. >> congressman, vice president harris was on a call with donors this friday. she said we are going to win this election. we are going to win. we know which candidate in this election puts the american people first, our president joe biden. do you think that call will be enough to shore up democratic donors? >> well, i don't know if it

will be enough for the donors, but i think it is enough for the voters. i hear from voters all the time. i have said to people , all day yesterday, if you can imagine, i was on the phone with donors, representatives of donors, with voters and what i am hearing, the majority of the people that have contacted me are all in for the president. and so i don't believe that we are unanimous in our support for the president but we are certainly unified in that support. i don't understand why people often get mixed up in those two words. we ought not be unanimous on anything. we are unified. back when the republicans were trying to -- every single vote up for democrats went to our

leader. i have never seen anybody, in all the votes of the democrats to go to the leader before. we are a unified party and we are unified in support of joe biden, irrespective of the fact of this. >> congressman, i want to talk about something near and dear to our hearts, the base, the grassroots, the heart and soul of any political party, certainly, any political organization when we are talking like we did in the last segment how on the republican side this convention we just witnessed did nothing to expand that base. the democrats are still poised, despite the current state and affairs within the party, to expand its base and create those coalitions. i want to call your attention to a letter from biden office

black women supporters, more than 1400 black women noted, history is a great teacher and has taught us that a divided house will fail. as black women we are uniquely aware the very real threat a second trump term poses to our country and especially to our community. this is not a moment to give into fear. symone was a part of visiting with these women and had a chance to check that temperature there. it was very high on joe biden. what is wrong with the donor class and the political class that they don't get what the voters feel and think about joe biden? they are the ones who are coalescing around him, the 14 million of them that voted for him, why is this disconnect still there? why are some in the political class, specifically egging this breakup, egging on this breakup? >> that letter was very interesting to me. you just lifted from that, it was very, very important.

we need to talk about the history of these types of things. often, it speaks to us. i remember in 1968, i was in attendance in 1972, as well as 1980. in both instances, we had this big contest, all three instances, really, the two that i attended though, for the leader of our party, a lot of people forget it was a big challenge for jimmy carter to reelect him to the presidency. where did that get us? a big defeat. the big fight we had as our nominee, what did that get us? one state and the district of columbia. i have never seen in modern time a wide open convention be successful in november.

it has not happened. i don't think it will happen now. this process, this drama that they created, it may not be healthy, but it is curable. i think we are well poised to win the presidency and vice presidency come november but we must stay focused, stay steady. that is why you see all these fellows around my house and in my office. i am focused to stay steady and we will win this race if we do so. going all over the place, having all kinds of fighting on the floor and the people of america looking in on this unity is not the way to hold yourself out to the american people. whatever we are going to do, we've got the focus to do it and i think in chicago we will be unified as one party and one big lovefest we will share with the american people so we can win this election in november.

>> congressman, you noted that the caucus may not be unanimous, the democratic caucus on the helper you are unified and you think this is curable. [ laughter ] look. y'all let me know. out of the highly rated primetime hours. this effort to put space between the trump campaign and project 2025 is deliberate. here is trump senior advisor chris lacivita earlier this week. >> that is pure speculation on your part. it is complete another -- and utter [ bleep ]. that is what the left wants. i will not give into that. the president has made it clear, the president has said they do not speak for him or the campaign. you guys sure as hell give them a lot of leeway because you are always writing the trump campaign will start with that, the next trump campaign. they are a pain in the [ bleep ]. >> joining us now, national director of policy and government for the american civil liberties union, mike seymour and the president of the human rights campaign kelly robinson. good morning. >> [ laughter ]. >> chris lacivita seemed very off, very upset about project 2025. they keep sending out messages that insist it is agenda 47, they are trying to distance

themselves from project 2025 but the policy is the same. can you make this make sense for us? >> i would disassociate myself from that policy, too, if i were them. it is so unpopular. they plan to ban abortion nationwide, misusing current law, they want to plan to send police to hospitals and churches and schools to roundup family members and rip apart families with mass deportations and they don't want the department of justice prosecuting political enemies and u.s. military and our streets to break up protests, this is a dystopian vision for the future, which is why the aclu is working to block it with everything we've got. yeah, this is their plan. they want to spring it on us after they get in office. >> kelly, just to further symone's point about helping this make sense, i would like to play for you, despite what chris lacivita is said about,

you know, this plant is a pain in the behind, i cleaned it up because i don't want to get in trouble this early in the morning. donald trump had a different perspective from april 21st of 2022, listen to what he had to say about the plan that nobody knows anything about and nobody wants anything to do with. >> heritage does such an incredible job laying the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what your movement will do with the american people when they give us a colossal mandate to save america. that is coming. that is calming. >> so can i just quote the former president will more time? heritage is going to lay the groundwork in detailed plans for exactly what our movement will do. what does that say to you?

>> it says to me that donald trump is doing what he does again, he is lying directly in our faces. look, the heritage foundation sponsored the rnc. tom homan, one of the chief architects of project 2025 also wrote donald trump's policy to put kids in cages for his immigration policies. we don't have to wonder what a second trump term would look like, they have shown us. they articulated in the rnc and are trying to lie about what they intend to do. y'all, we got to see through all of this. it is urgent.

what mike said is exactly right. they are not trying to take us back to the handmaids tale, they are taking us back to the land before time, what is articulated here is terrifying. what is articulated here is taking away our ability to put food on the table, make a living wage and make decisions right for healthcare and send our kids to school and count on them getting a good education. we have to be very clear all that is at stake. project 2025 does not just want this to be an election where they put plans into place, they wanted to be the last election we see that even resembles a representative democracy. >> the trump campaign, it is not working in reverse what they are doing. i want you to listen what the heritage foundation president, kevin roberts, had to say. >> okay. we have heard and confirm news that vice president vance is the running mate. you may see a smile on my face because we are great friends. i am will offer two comments about that. the entire list of names considered, among them, truly, with them friends of heritage. among them, was someone that privately we were really rooting for and he has just been named the running mate.

>> privately we were really rooting for, publicly we will now tell you we were really rooting for him. i think what we all found interesting watching the convention was that very little of this stuff showed up in their primetime speeches. they know exactly what you said, which is all unpopular with a general election electorate. they will try to step away with it but their fingerprints are all over it. >> yeah, that is absolutely right, alicia. the debate, as you noted in your intro, hundreds of former trump administration officials drafted this thing and a lot of those people will be in very high ranking positions in the next administration if trump wins. this is his plan. we all expected the first administration would be bad and it was. but we need to understand that is their intention. they are mired in incompetence to some degree but this will be a different thing. the velociraptor seven opened
