thank you for being here with us on msnbc for our special on president biden. it was an that the president spoke live from the oval office to the american people about his stunning decision three days ago to drop his bid for re- election. >> when you elected me to this offimise to always level with you, to tell you the truth, and the truth, the sacred cause of this country is larger than any one of us and those who cherish that cause, cherish it so much, the cause of american democracy itself, must unite to protect it. in recent weeks it has become clear to me that i need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. i believe my record as president, my leadership in the
10:02 pm
world, my vision for america's future all merited the second term, but nothing, nothing could come in the way of saving our democracy. that includes personal ambition. so, i have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. >> presently expressed enormous gratitude to the american people for the honor and privilege of serving in elected office for so many decades. he also discussed what he still has left to do in his last six months, even making his tonight by saying one of the things he is going to work on his supreme court reform, something he was long resistant to. we have had reporting that something like this it was in the works but tonight was the first time we heard the president conferment and as president biden voluntarily relinquished some power tonight, he urged the american people to use their power to defend democracy. quote,
10:03 pm
america is here. kings and dictators do not rule, the people do. history is in your hands, the power is in your hands. the idea of america lies in your hands. joy, rachel mentioned this and that stuck out to me as well, the idea of america is something he talked about repeatedly in his remarks tonight and is also something jd vance talked about and refuted in his convention speech saying america is not an idea, it is a nation. as a nation that is dictated by the certain ideals. there is a fundamental disconnect or debate, raging one about what this country actually is and i wonder when you think about this speech, thinking about it from the perspective of president biden's audience in the democratic party but there is another group of people also listening to this tonight including former president trump and jd vance. >> the thing that is so fascinating is that joe biden's age -- you would think it would match jd vance's vibe and
10:04 pm
beliefs. you would think jd vance is the one that is 82 years old because their views are reversed. the generation joe biden came from is the generation when women stayed in the home and couldn't open a bank account without their husband's permission, was the generation when abortion was not legal and yet he to the point of evolution has become someone republicans think of as the smoke during their communist and he is one of the most centrist figures in democratic party politics to the point where at a time he was thought of is too far to the right for a lot of young democrats and yet his views are so much more useful than jd vance. jd vance chicks retrograde beliefs about women, divorce about whether they should be able to leave abusive relationships about whether they should be able to get an abortion or wildly retrograde views on race, joe biden is of the generation you would think would have these backward views on race but it is jd vance who
10:05 pm
has the young presentation but these very old-fashioned views and so it is sort of almost as if donald trump was trying to help the democrats retain the white house by picking somebody who represents the odd generational views that even many men of joe biden's generation have let go. they have let it go. why can't the republican party let it go and they are still to this day using such vile, misogynistic, ugly racist attacks against kamala harris, against vice president harris as if there was anyone in the majority of america that would actually embrace that in a political party. it makes no sense. >> it also gets to where this election is going to be decided. nobody who was at the republican convention chairing the selection of jd vance is anyone any campaign should ever think of again. the last six days over the edge and the last battleground
10:06 pm
states that will determine the election there is literally nobody they persuaded with that selection. i think they have acknowledged that it was a choice born out of the luxury of believing in their own cockiness and hubris of thinking they had it running away and because donald trump could never contemplate relinquishing power for something bigger than himself, because joe biden could never contemplate serving the country if he were to -- i'm sorry, donald trump would never contemplate that, not tonight speech, not the decision to leave the ticket, not the decision to bestow all that power and prestige of the first very successful, very popular term as president on his vice president, they are totally befuddled. they have no idea what to do and they will regroup and they may land where they are now. they will regroup but in these moments you really do see them and you see adam ken's a and kevin mccarthy, lifelong republicans admonishing the
10:07 pm
racist and misogynistic attacks on the vice president. >> you've seen members of the house republican caucus have to send out a memo saying hey, cool it on the racist language. as tim miller said if you have to send out a memo saying don't be racist, chances are you might be racist. >> really goes to show that they did not contemplate this and because they cannot debate the merits of it. right? the one thing they want to talk about is the border which frankly joe biden said in his speech tonight border crossings at the lowest they've been in my presidency, lower than the last president. the border is what they want to go to them because they can't really go to the border than that opens up a conversation about donald trump and how he literally called house and senate republicans and said hey, don't do this deal. it's too good for joe biden instead of again putting the country first and what the country needed, they can talk about that so they've resorted to racism and sexism and i
10:08 pm
think it would behoove democrats not to take the debate on that. they want to get mired down in the conversation on racism and sexism and they would like people to spend all five minutes in an interview explaining what di really is and that needs to be called out. it is a distraction. it is the culture wars in the culture wars are a distraction but it is also their playbook. it's always been the playbook donald trump is run out of, and in this moment, i think that is just been highlighted more than ever like all that talk about donald trump changing last week, the very real assassination attempt on his life somehow made him spiritual and the tone is going to be different in the lord is now speaking to him? okay well, that's not the jesus i know. the jesus i know don't talk like that. >> such an astute point that what has been so over.
10:09 pm
-- overpowering in the last three days is the optimism, the positivity, the good vibes. i mean, it has been so missing from american politics for what feels like 100 years and democrats would do well to stay -- i mean channeling the great michelle obama, when they go low, we go high. obviously people like to get in the mud pit a little bit more. but, there is something to this moment, you know, if you can keep it elevated, people like feeling good and they felt really bad for a long time. >> that is so true when we spoke with every day's continuum so i don't know what day this was but we spoke with senator cory booker about this the other night and he is probably one of the most optimistic people in the senate. it is such a wonderful quality about him but when i asked him about this he basically said, she's going to define her own race. i mean, she is who she is, i mean campaign, right? she's got to be fierce and strong but to simone's point,
10:10 pm
you can't take the bait and litigate every one of these things. when there is a bully, vladimir putin is a good example, you've got to punch them back verbally, and you can go down the rabbit hole with them. that is what we have learned from trump and a lot of people. i will say just maybe, some of these attacks, they can't quite figure out what their whole messages here so they are a little hilarious. one of them is that she is not birthed a child. this is one of the things out there. sometimes twitter is crazy, sometimes it's good and one of the hits back on this is that you know who is never birthed a child? anyone who is set in the oval office. that is the kind of hit back because you've got to move back to the issues at hand. abortion rights, freedom. >> by the way, she has helped raise children. she is a stepmother and in the 21st century if you can get with the idea of a blended family, you are living under a rock.
10:11 pm
>> the other thing is, it is not additive. as we all know who have worked on campaigns, it's an equation of how many people can they add. they added nothing on their convention. the attacks on stepmom's are attacking suburban women. you've already added jd vance. there is an ap story about him and a couch which is inappropriate about him for prime time. if that is what you are doing, who are you adding with these? the problem they have is that joe biden definitely over performed with white men and so that is what vice president harris has to look at. she has to perform as well as hillary clinton did with white women, get very close there and has to perform as well with groups of color then she will probably add a running mate that will help her with men but at least they're thinking about the math. i don't see any evidence the trunk campaign is thinking about adding anyone. >> they thought they didn't have to.
10:12 pm
donald trump looks at the poles of soda frozen in time. i think he saw that he was ahead and picked jd vance and never contemplated a man like joe biden. i mean, it's the reason for the time he was impeached twice. he continues to underestimate both joe biden's commitment to the country, how fiercely he will fight to save democracy, and the moves strategically that he would make and they did not see this coming at all. >> can we talk about this negativity, the clout of grievance that is hovering over the trunk campaign, we should reflect back at the gratitude
10:13 pm
that has been expressed by this president, but also by the people in the white house that serve with him. tonight we have reports saying after the president's remarks, he left the oval for a few minutes and had a private moment with his family in the dining room then took a photo with tv pullers and a separate photo with white house communications agency personnel. very nice of you as a former white house spooler. i will say thank you, then he walked out to the rose garden were hundreds of staff away to the president to surprise him with rousing and lengthy cheering. that is a picture from tonight. that is a surprise thank you president biden moment. white house staff, the president grabbed the mic and addressed the staff for several minutes. jen, you know. >> i love that. after he did his first state of the union we all waited right in the hallway when you walk out of the beast, as you call it, and we all waited for over an hour because he spent so much time shaking hands it was like he was never coming, we were doing chance. we were doing tears. it was a long time to cheer for him and simone said a lot of
10:14 pm
wonderful things. one of the things she said it's like that is exactly how i felt when i started working for him. i did not work on the campaign and i was worried i would not be able to connect with him because i had not had that time and when you are the press secretary and the spokesperson, you need to have that relationship and i felt a couple of weeks into that job like i have known him forever because he has this way of engaging with people that is very down to earth. it is very, pull up a chair at the resolute desk. let's chat about what is going on and how are your kids? that is who he is, and i think that is one of the things you are seeing with the emotions of staff were watching the kids who are waiting outside to cheer him on in the rose garden is that deep connection not just with people of his generation, with many people who are much younger than that. >> it is human. it is so human and you actually have somebody that created a
10:15 pm
connection rather than fear in the people around them. you get the sense that was donald trump everyone around us terrified and worried he's going to attack them, treated them or whatever they're going to do but there is not the sense of affection. it is a cult mania, but it is not that. it is a difference. we were talking a little bit a moment ago about the lack of joy. the joy is back in the democratic campaign. today, vice president, harris delivered the key speech at the zeta phi beta convention in indianapolis. she thanked the sorority for their years of political inadequacy. >> and, for generations the fine women of zeta phi beta sorority incorporated have fought to build that brighter future, and i will tell you when i was a united states senator, i would see this group of powerful leaders walk through the halls of congress in white and blue, and i always knew i was looking at some of the most powerful advocates for justice in america.
