tv   100 Days The Deciders  MSNBC  July 28, 2024 1:00pm-2:00pm PDT

1:00 pm
1:01 pm
>> today, the long-distance race that is a presidential campaign is now a sprint. >> are we willing to fight for it? and when we fight, we win. >> now we have a new victim. >> in the hour ahead, we will be looking at the voters will make or break this election. >> i cannot say with certainty that she can win. >> i'm not sure how i'm going to vote in november. >> voters still trying to process a dizzying succession of change. an assassination attempt against former president donald trump. >> uses a bullet pierced his ear. >> the sitting president dropping out of the race. >> the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. >> and the fast emergence of kamala harris as the heir apparent.
1:02 pm
>> we have secured the democratic nomination. >> a race both transformed and transformational, sure to be brutal. >> she was a bomb three weeks ago. she was a bomb. >> this hour, we will take you to the key counties to hear from voters, campaigns and grassroots organizers about what to expect in the only race that ends in the oval office. hello, i am chris jensen. welcome to this msnbc special. 100 days, the deciders. today, we are 100 days out from an election where the script is so fluid, the uncertainty so vast, and the story so far, so unbelievable. we have questions, starting with, what is happening 100 days out? well, an eye-popping $200 million raised in just the last week.
1:03 pm
the vice president also adding to her endorsements in just the last hour, adding former vp al gore. and one of the potential running mates is on the stump in georgia, out of a massive mobilization effort in key states. the enthusiasm, meantime, donald trump days has not waned. check out this time-lapse video. a mile-long line to see him this weekend in st. cloud, minnesota. some people waiting for hours. and more questions. will it be the grassroots group on the ground, in their own neighborhoods, with their own friends who ultimately swing the selection? what are the voters in the six states that are expected to decide this election telling us? and how does that inform what harris and trump do next? we will ask reps from both campaigns this hour and bring you the latest answers to all of those key questions. but let's start with four of those battleground states where our correspondents have pretty much taken residence in a talk with hundreds of voters who we call the deciders.
1:04 pm
let's begin with nbc's -- in georgia, where the harris campaign is holding several events today, including one headlined by can techie governor andy beshear who will be joining us later this hour. tell us about the event and the mood there since harris has shaken up the race. >> yeah, chris. voters were energetic. they were excited, just like they have been in most of the harris campaign events this weekend. the only difference is, this event was in forsyth county, a predominately white conservative county at the former president once safely picked up in 2020 with about 65% of the vote. it also shows you how andy beshear could aid that ticket. he was able to speak directly to those voters and rally them around vice president harris. i have to tell you, this weekend, you're really seen the harris campaign making full shows. we've had more than 174 events, they are registered more than x thousand volunteers. they now
1:05 pm
28 offices statewide, including three that are open this weekend alone, and voters here are energized. yesterday, i spoke to several, many of whom pointed to the history making nature of president as fueling their enthusiasm. take a listen. >> i feel like it is history for us. i feel like it is good. and we know that we can become whatever we want to become with our hearts to it. it is great for the women, it is great for the black community. it is just great. and i think she's going to give trump what he needs. he is and ready for this one. >> chris, george and allie top target for the harris campaign. president harris herself will be here on tuesday, and based on the enthusiasm i'm seeing, i have a feeling that event is going to be packed as of the event in milwaukee was last week. >> thank you so much for that. make our way to pennsylvania
1:06 pm
now. and get the latest on the ground there, or pennsylvania heavy hitters are endorsing schapiro as a potential harris running mate. tell us what is happening. >> yeah, chris. almost every single democrat here in pennsylvania that i have spoken to has expressed great support for governor schapiro, and they are really, really hoping that he ends up being vice president harris's running mate. there are two main reasons for that. the first one is he is currently the only governor in the united states that oversees a divided legislature. they point to his ability to be effective and get things done. the second reason is because he knows how to win pennsylvania. akin 2020 when he was running for his second term as attorney general, he was on the same ballot as president biden and he got more votes than biden. he actually got more votes in pennsylvania. when he was running for governor in 2022, he won by nearly 15 percentage
1:07 pm
points. governor schapiro over and over again has said that this is a deeply personal decision that should be made without any political pressure, but voters -- nevermind that -- are still hoping it is him. >> i like her to pick someone she can work with, i hope that person is schapiro, because i think there are a lot of good reasons for that. the electoral votes, the fact that he is well spoken and he's a moderate. i think he would appeal in lots of ways. >> schapiro is the candidate for pennsylvania. pennsylvania is the key to this country. the writing is on the wall. >> now, it is not only the voters who are saying that a lot of high heavy hitters here in pennsylvania. legislators are also saying they also hope it is governor schapiro. i wrote this article with my colleague, brendan leach, and reported that a lot of democrats in the state are making an aggressive push for
1:08 pm
governor schapiro. everyone from the mayor of philadelphia to the speaker of the house of pennsylvania is really hoping that it is governor schapiro. the pennsylvania democratic share said he's not going to endorse in this particular race because of his position. however, he did say he would be lying and being disingenuous if he didn't say that having governor schapiro as harris's running mate would make his life extremely easy over the next couple of months. >> thank you, emma. let's go to arizona right now where are embed alex tabet is live in phoenix. how is the change in the democratic ticket altered things in that state, especially with senator mark kelly as a potential vp choice? >> well, chris, i've been living here in arizona since february, and over the last five months, there hasn't been that much optimism about president biden's chances from democrats. they saw poll after poll, and
1:09 pm
saw former president donald trump over performing president biden, and there wasn't really that sense of enthusiasm. that really changed this past week. democrats are now feeling a renewed sense of energy. i want you to hear how some democrats works using the moment right now. >> the excitement is so palpable for kamala harris, and i think that she has a much better chance to take on donald trump. >> it gave new energy to the campaign, and i think also, she is appealing to the young vote. >> you mentioned senator mark kelly, who is also getting a lot of arizonans excited. it's not just because he is a hometown hero. if you want to understand just how much they love a hometown hero, ask yvonne hilliard. it is not just that he is an astronaut and republican, democrats and republicans all seem to agree that being an astronaut is pretty cool. it has to do a lot with the
1:10 pm
fact that senator kelly is taking a strong moderate stance on abortion, on immigration, rather. which really is important to a lot of arizonans. >> alex tabet, thank you for that. it's no surprise that kamala harris first presidential primary was in the battleground of wisconsin, a state where a survey says 42% of voters identify as republicans, 32% identify as democrats. it's also home to another decider county -- dane county, where you will find the university of wisconsin and the state capital. msnbc political analyst elise jordan talked with a group of progressive voters there. >> i think what she brings is fresh. she was in office for 4 years, but she knows the network. she knows who the players are. >> it just gives us a chance. i am convinced that she has at least a 50/50 chance against trump.
1:11 pm
i would love for the democrats, but i live in the real world, you know? and again, this election, democracy is on the line. >> using vice president harris has a much better shot of defeating donald trump? >> absolutely. >> elise also spoke to a group of donald trump diehards in green bay, wisconsin. dayton unsurprisingly had a different reaction to the harris presidency. >> do you think that having vice president kamala harris as the nominee dramatically changes donald trump's odds of winning? >> i am worried about it. >> i think she is going to go for the minority and female and younger voters. >> progressive. >> everyone is excited about her, and that scares me.
1:12 pm
>> joe biden won the city of green bay in 2020, but he lost the county. our thanks to elise jordan for that. coming up from the voters to the campaigns, we speak to jason miller about how team trump is repositioning itself to take on a new opponent just 100 days from the election. plus one of the big names being floated as kamala harris potential running mates, kentucky governor andy beshear will join us live. we are life after this. shingrix does not protect everyone and is not for those with severe allergic reactions to its ingredients or to a previous dose. an increased risk of guillain-barré syndrome was observed after getting shingrix. fainting can also happen. the most common side effects are pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, tiredness, headache, shivering, fever, and upset stomach. ask your doctor or pharmacist about shingrix today. meet the jennifers. jen x.

1:17 pm
joe biden announced his campaign manager in may 2023, meaning that joey chavez rodriguez spent one year, two months, and 14 days crafting a strategy and a message around his strengths, his voters. then all that changed when biden left the race. in a moment, we will talk to potential democratic running mate, andy beshear, who has been out on the stump for kamala harris today. first and joined by jason miller, senior adviser to the trump campaign. you had a plan against joe biden. you are confident you could beat him. so how has your strategy changed, and you think the math has changed? >> well, the strategy fundamentally doesn't change. we are running on a very direct strategy of making sure we have a lower cost for americans and also make our country safer by securing the border. as we start heading into the return of kids going back to school, the parents are having to spend more money on things
1:18 pm
like new school clothes and you expenses, and people reminding how much more and said things are under joe biden and kamala harris. that's another thing we think will bring that front and center. keep in mind, the democrats have a new person at the top of the ticket with kamala harris, but she very much owns all the joe biden record, plus she has her own left of center -- as i would say, radical liberal record herself. >> let me just respond to a couple of those things. in the first couple of years of the biden presidency, they kept 2.8 million migrant out, which is why the number of deportations is down, because people never come in. you can't deport them. a rate cut. big headline in the wall street journal finally in view. we know that the prices have been moderating of groceries. but it's not for us to debate that, it is for the candidates to debate that. you have said in the past that donald trump would debate. is that still good?
1:19 pm
>> absolutely. we think the democrats need to pick with their ultimate nominee is going to be. that needs to be formalized before we lock it in. >> but it was before your nominee was formalized. >> hold on, we need to make sure the democrats actually go through and lock in kamala harris. it was only a month ago, chris, that many democrats who wanted to throw joe biden overboard were saying, we need to go to this mini primary. we need to go with somebody else. it's only been this past week that they've had effort to rally around kamala harris. the exact same people that were saying joe biden was okay are the same people saying now we have to get behind harris. >> it was only in the last week she had a number of delegates to secure the nomination. >> but hold on. 14 million democrats voted for joe biden in this primary system, and now all of those voters -- >> will donald trump to be kamala harris?
1:20 pm
>> oh, of course we are going to debate the democratic nominee if that is kamala harris and that becomes formalized. i believe the date we are looking at is august 7th. i have to go back to wanting you said when you are talking about the rate of inflation. the fact of the matter is, everything is still getting much more expensive. energy costs are up about 50%. as we seen some reporting in the new york post, oregon isn't 90%. people are being crushed all around the country. these are still getting more expensive. and maybe just slightly less fast. every day we are opening up the newspapers or turning on the television and seeing these horror stories, like murder, and these are the types of things voters are looking at. which of these candidates can actually go and turn the country around? only a few short years ago, president trump had this fantastic -- and now under the biden/harris administration, we have seen effectively what
1:21 pm
amounts to a $28,000 household tax increase. that's essentially what it is with inflation going up. people want a different direction. >> so what we have seen is that the polls have tightened. the fundraising has tightened. so what is your proof that that statement is true? if anything seems to be true is that that is a tougher race for donald trump that it was just a week ago. >> actually, i disagree with that as well. what we have seen is -- >> you have different internal polls? >> hold on. president trump is still leading, weatherby nationally or in the battlegrounds. >> within the margin of error. less than he was with joe biden on the ticket. >> you look at eight years ago -- but hold on. you look at where president trump is. president trump is still the front runner in this race. the caution i would offer is that democrats really need to worry about buyers remorse.
1:22 pm
in 2019, kamala harris never actually made it to the starting gates in iowa. as we said a moment ago, about four weeks, democrats were not rallying around kamala harris because a lot of people did not think that she could actually carry the ticket. with president trump, we seen someone who has seen the success of the economy so recently that people realize we can get that back. all we have to do is get the energy production going, and reduce the surplus spending. we can get that back in such a short order, and that's what we want to deliver for people. i would really caution democrats that they may have some buyers remorse. if they want a change of direction, want their lives to become more affordable. that's where president trump is running. >> jason miller, good of you to come on the program. thank you. i wanted to bring in a man reported to be on the shortlist as kamala harris's running mate as well as surrogate, kentucky
1:23 pm
governor andy beshear joins us from georgia where earlier today he headlined a campaign event for kamala harris in forsyth county, which donald trump won by nearly two thirds of the vote. okay. so buyers remorse, you just heard what jason miller had to say. are you hearing that from democrats? >> oh, my goodness. we are seeing more energy than i have ever's been in politics. i went this morning to what is supposed to be a ruby red county on this weekend of action. they were hoping there might be 50 people, and we had 300+. they are fired up. they don't want to go back. they want to move forward. they are excited about making vice president harris our next president. you see thousands upon thousands of people signing up to volunteer. she is on a roll. we are going to keep this energy up and we are going to elect her as the next president of the united states. >> i don't need to tell you that your state has been reliably read as the 50s.
1:24 pm
donald trump won there in 2020 by 26%. and you won last year by 5%. your approval ratings are well above 60%. i think the last one i saw was around 62%. so what is the secret sauce do you think for the harris campaign to compete in purple states, and you think it is possible that they could have a different map? jason doesn't think the map has changed. >> i believe the map has changed. georgia is in play, and georgia is going to go for the vice president. what the vice president understands is most people when they wake up in the morning, they are not thinking about their political party or the polls. they are thinking about the job and whether or not they make enough to support their family. they're thinking about the next doctor's appointment for their kids. they're thinking about the roads and bridges they drive and thinking about public safety, blick education. just look at what the biden/harris team has delivered. in kentucky, because of the inflation reduction act, we are
1:25 pm
building the two biggest battery plants on planet earth. 5000 new jobs for our people. were building a companion bridge between kentucky and ohio, the largest infrastructure project we've ever seen. president biden and vice president harris came through. we are running internet to every home across kentucky. clean drinking water to places that have never had it before. >> are you suggesting she has a chance in kentucky? >> i think kentucky has been challenging terrain, but i think she has a chance in a lot of states that are out there. what i saw in a state, and a county this morning, they went 80% to romney and i think about 70% to trump. 300+ people fired up and ready to go that believe in the vice president. they believe in her free number of reasons, one of which is, she is a champion for reproductive freedom. you look at the fact that my mom, my daughter, and my wife
1:26 pm
had a constitutional right ripped and stripped from them. i think it is important that we strip donald trump from the chance to ever have a second term. >> let me ask you about something that there's a lot of buzz about. that is that three other people set to be on the shortlist for vice president were also chosen. you are one of them. what can you tell us about where you are with the vice presidential process. have you been sent vetting materials? would you like the job? >> what i can tell you is it is an honor to be can entered, but no matter what happens, i'm going to work every day between now and election day to make sure the vice president is elected. and let me say, i got the best job anybody could ever ask for. >> another one is vice presidential nominee, would you consider giving it up ? >> i think that everybody being considered are great leaders. the only way i consider another job as if i believed i could help the people of kentucky and the people of the united states of america in a different way.
1:27 pm
and when we look at what's going on in kentucky right now, we've turned the temperature down. we have democrats and republicans working together, and do we want that for our country? we get out of the craziness that we have seen these past years to get to a point where neighbors don't yell at neighbors because of the registration box that they checked. the vice president can get us there. she is that type of leader. she tries to move the country forward, not right. not left, but forward. donald trump wants to take us backwards. >> andy beshear of the road for governor harris today. thank you for taking the time to talk to us. of next, steve at the big board looking at two counties that could swing this election. plus, i will speak with three specialist on grassroots working to turn enthusiasm into votes.

1:32 pm
100 days, the deciders. no examination will help determine the selection without msnbc's steve at the big board. what are you following? >> you know, there are more than 3100 counties in the united states of america. but as we begin this final 100 days until election day, we have reduced this to seven -- seven what we are calling decider counties. each one tells an important story demographically about where the national race maybe, where maybe going, and with kamala harris apparently set to replace joe biden as a democratic nominee against donald trump, we thought we would look closely at two counties that loom particularly large now among this group of seven decider counties. let's start in the state of georgia. you are looking at gwinnett county. this is just outside of atlanta in that big fast-growing. you know the story of georgia.
1:33 pm
a republican state until 2020, when joe biden flipped it by the narrowest of margins, just under 12,000 votes. and the story this time around and georgia has been the donald trump has been polling much better against biden before harris switched into the race. the hope for democrats with harris entering the race is that a county like we met, you are going to see a big expansion for support relative to biden with black voters, because gwinnett is one of the most racially diverse counties in georgia. it's about a third black. and the hope for democrats is that biden had been struggling a little bit with black voters, that harris doesn't. she increases the black vote share relative to a biden is getting, and you see it in a place like gwinnett. it is fast-growing, getting more and more diverse. justin 2016, it was a six-point race in this county. it's exploded to 18 points, biden over trump. the democrats are hoping they can expand this margin even further, and a key ingredient
1:34 pm
for them if they do, is black voters. and again, the big picture hope for democrats here is, while the core battleground states, the polling in georgia, look particularly shaky for them. they are hoping if we see if this actually happens. they hope it will change a place like gwinnett and a state like georgia. now take a look at pennsylvania. again, anyway you slice the electoral college map, pennsylvania is extremely crucial. even among these battleground states just because of the size, because of the number of electoral votes. the combinations it opens up and potentially shuts off for this race. erie county is one of only two counties in the state of pennsylvania that switched between 2016, voted for trump in 2016, voted for biden in 2020. pennsylvania itself as a state flipped from trump in 2016 to biden in 2020. this is one of the swing counties of a key swing state.
1:35 pm
it's got a large blue-collar white population. white voters without college degrees. we talk about them so much. an area of growth for republicans. democrats have been doing worse and worse here with this demographic. erie county, you see a very large representation of that group of voters. a question here for kamala harris is, can she make progress? not just in a place like gwinnett county. and she also do it in a place like erie county, pennsylvania? the last two elections, as went erie county, so went pennsylvania. >> think you for that. i want to talk more about the state that steve tarted with, georgia. spring and senior political reporter for the atlanta journal-constitution and msnbc political contributor. every two years, you and i get a chance to chat. and in fact, you wrote friday about how harris has shaken up the race in yours date, citing
1:36 pm
a landmark communications poll taken the day after biden's withdrawal. how much of a shakeup has this been? >> republicans and democrats agree here in georgia that it is entire political landscape here. and steve was spot on. gwinnett county has gone from republican stronghold to a pillar of democratic support here in georgia. and neighboring forsyth county, were you just interviewed governor bashir, i was with him earlier this morning. that's a county the not so long ago was solidly republican. it has dwindled down to two thirds of the vote. republicans and democrats agree to stay in the republican stronghold. if they can keep donald trump to around 60% of the vote in this election, that kamala harris has a real chance of winning. >> were you surprised as he suggested he was by the turnout this weekend? >> yeah. i have covered georgia politics for decades now, and forsyth county has always been a republican stronghold. you see 300, 400 people there
1:37 pm
on an office opening on a sunday afternoon. i kind of showed up 10 minutes before the event thinking that i would just glide into a parting space, and have easy access. and it was packed to the gills. and so that was a sign of enthusiasm, even in the republican stronghold. and democrats i talked to their cities to be afraid to show up at events this, and they are feeling more comfortable and they're obviously feeling more enthusiastic. >> let me ask you really quickly about gwinnett county, which biden won by about 75,000 votes. i noticed one of your colleagues wrote about black women as the backbone of the party. will they be the game changers here? >> you know, in states like georgia, they always are. they are the most loyal constituency of the party, and there's a sense that the poll numbers are already improving for vice president harris among not just black women, black men as well. >> i will say between us, we have probably done scores of
1:38 pm
office openings, and i don't remember crowds of that size, and much more to come in the next 100 days. greg, thank you. up next, turning excitement into votes. i went to speak with three women who are masters of the grassroots ground game about what lies ahead to get out the vote. hillary clinton won the popular vote by more than 2.8 million, lost the white house. >> this is not the outcome we wanted, or we work so hard for. and i am sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country. >> the difference, roughly 2/10 of 1% in michigan, 7/10 in wisconsin. and in 2020, even with historic turnout and a major victory for joe biden i 7 million votes, 44,000 votes across three states , georgia, arizona, wisconsin, separated biden and trump from electoral college tie. no one understands the value of every vote better than my next guest. katie harris, founder of red white and blue, jasmine roger, executive director of swing left, and adriana shop shire, i am so glad to see all of you today. katie, your specialty is one of the prize democratic voting groups, suburban women.

1:45 pm
we have been sort of raising volunteerism even before this big surge. 88% higher than where we were in 2018, but like i mentioned in that salon article, anxiety was a prevailing emotion that was prevailing that surge of donations and volunteer shifts. in the 180 shift in mood has not just been a bike shift, it has been turning into, we raise $1 billion for candidates just this week. i know katie and adrian were involved, in all the sort of many zoom calls were across the ecosystem, millions of dollars were raised this week, and what makes me just prouder than any of those dollar amounts is that our folks have been out pounding the pavement all weekend long. they were phone banking, writing letters, and the kinds of stories we were hearing were, not only are folks feeling really fired up about kamala harris, and also about this moment of unity and hope in the party, and they are ready to
1:46 pm
throw that into some wins on the ballot. >> what you see as the role and the possibility for a group like yours over the next 100 days? >> i mean, i just want to second and third the idea of the way that we are seeing energy and excitement increase. you know, we have seen it on the doors, we are knocking on doors and swing states and talking to black voters, and i just think that while we are -- once we've paid communication, we will see commercials and digital ads. all of that is really important in terms of getting accurate information out. i think the thing we know is that black voters have been a target of miss and disinformation. but it's really going to be those face-to-face conversations that people have on doorsteps with folks that are going to make the difference. for every commercial, there is a trusted messenger knocking on someone's door, making a phone call, sending a text message
1:47 pm
that is going to turn people out. i think the energy and excitement, while this is not going to be a cakewalk, i think we all acknowledge that, there are still a lot of voters that are still feeling anxious, a lot of voters were feeling like they are uncertain about the direction of the country. we also know that people are tired of having to act on fear, and they are ready to move forward. they are ready to get in the game for something that is aspirational, something that helps them feel like, yes, this is the america that we can be. although zoom calls were great, especially the ways in which people came together to say, we may be different, but if all of us together are the more perfect union. we represent the more perfect union, and we are going to bring that into being, and having someone aspirational like kamala harris really gives folks something to stand up and go out and work for. >> this was actually founded on the idea of, if you live in a place where, honestly, a lot of democrats are, there is no big contest. people wanted to get involved. and so much like black pack, your organization does a lot with that down ballot races as well. that's one of the arguments that
1:48 pm
people made for joe biden getting out of the race. is this changing that equation as you see it on the ground? >> absolutely. i mean, just like anxiety was the prevailing emotion in terms of the presidential race, folks were really worried in that period between the debate and last sunday about, you know, what is the uncertainty of the ticket going to mean in terms of particularly house races with the fight to win back the house as the sort of clearest path to victory here. that is tougher for the senate, and of course, the presidential is the challenging fight we know that it's going to be. and with what this past week has looked like both in terms of enthusiasm, and also in terms of dollars, we have seen that our house candidates have been calling us and saying, you know, their coffers are blowing up in the best way possible, and also, the poles out in the field to see exactly what this is going to mean for their races. everything that they are seeing so far in those early returns

it is 100 days. the thing that is different this time is we have a very compressed campaign, and we usually say it's a marathon, not a sprint. this is a sprint, not a marathon. the whole deck has been shuffled. it's a very interesting situation, if kamala harris wins, which is a big if, we may look back and see this compressed schedule really helped her, you think about it -- there hasn't been a year of attacks on her like there would have been had she been nominated earlier. she has the whole -- republican convention is already happening. harris now has the opportunity to dominate the news for the next couple of weeks, dominate the news during the convention, and then it is labor day, and those will already be starting. the debate -- or debates -- and again, that is a big if there, but certainly, if the debate has to happen, we think so, anyway, that will be key. it's going to be crucial. the thing is, the last debate turned out to be one of the most consequential in history, and the next one could prove just as much.
