convention will be designed to give all of those americans not comfortable with that, an opportunity to say this is not a democratic thing, this is a freedom thing because we are not going to go back to the type of country we were, we will go back into the future. the other thing is you see trump reacting in a desperate manner and what does he do when he gets concerned? he reverts to these race war types of things. that's what he tried to do today at nabj and we cannot as a country allow that to define the terms of the race and i don't think harris is going to do that. that's why she was moderate in her comments tonight. >> absolutely. thank you both for being with us tonight on this very interesting news day. folks, that is all in on this wednesday night. alex wagner's show tonight starts now. >> i like that you have generously called it an interesting news day. props to you, michael steele. today has been a lot.
6:01 pm
today has been a lot and we will get into all of it, thank you, my friend, it's good to see you. >> okay, until recently, the national conversation about this 2024 presidential election has been largely focused on white working-class voters. president biden considered himself the champion for the working and the middle class, donald trump's running mate, senator vance, introduced himself at the republican national convention as the son of appalachia, with hillbilly roots. a man who would fight for the workers in this country. but the question of how black voters might vote this year, black voters, and a key segment of the electorate, that question has been unusually open-ended. when biden was still at the top of the ticket, polls showed him underperforming with black voters as they slipped to donald trump. an in-depth survey of nearly i 9000 of adult published the summer before i didn't dropped out found that one in five black men said they planned to
6:02 pm
vote for trump. in the 2016 election, 13% of black men voted for trump that in 2020, 19% of black men did. part of biden's problem as a candidate was figuring out how to stop lack voters especially black men, from deserting the democratic party this november. but since vice president harris has become the de facto nominee less than two weeks ago, those numbers have changed and they have changed significantly. and now the trump campaign is in a tailspin as it tries to figure out whether voters of color, particularly black voters are still in play. and so today, in a remarkably ill-advised appearance before the national association of black journalists, nabj, donald trump sat on stage, for a question and answer session.
6:03 pm
>> a lot of people did not think it was appropriate for k you to be here today. you have pushed false claims about some of your rivals, from nikki haley to former president obama saying that they were not born in the united states which is not true, you've told for congresswoman women of color who are american citizens to gon back to where they came from you have used words like animal and rabbit to describe black district attorneys, saying the questions they ask are stupid and racist, you had dinner with a white supremacist at your mar- a-lago resort. my question, sir, now that you are asking black supporters to vote for you, why should black voters trust you after you have use language like that? >> first of all, i don't think i've ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner, first question. you don't even say hello, how are you, and i think it's disgraceful that i came here in good spirit. i think it is a very rude
6:04 pm
introduction. i don't know exactly why you would do something like this. you were half an hour late. i have too much respect for you to be late. you started off the question and answer. because you couldn't get your equipment to work in such a hostile manner, i think it's a disgrace. >> calling abc reporter rachel scott disgraceful, complaining that the journalists couldn't figure out how to operate their equipment, repeatedly calling the black reporters late, all complaints that veered into racist tropes about tardiness and competence. that is how trump's nabj appearance went today but that maybe wasn't even the worst part. when trump was subsequently asked about republican claims that vice president harris is only on the ticket because she's a black woman , trump responded by questioning harris's racial identity. >> she was always of indian heritage and she was only
6:05 pm
promoting indian heritage, i didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black, i don't know, is she indian? or is she black? i respect either one but she obviously doesn't. because she was indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person. i think somebody should look into that, too, when you continue in a hostile and nasty tone. >> that's donald trump, openly questioning the racial identity of the country's first black and asian vice president. for the record here, while campaigning for attorney general of california and later for president of the united states in 2020, kamala harris es repeatedly told her family story, a story of two immigrants, one from jamaica and the other from india who found opportunity in the united states. on this point, kamala harris has never been unclear. >> i was raised by a proud d
6:06 pm
indian mother as a proud african american woman. >> i was first african american and asian woman elected in the state as a district attorney. >> paris's identity as a biracial american of the story of her immigrant heritage are two things that a lot of voters can relate to. but donald trump suggested to a room full of black people that harris and her blackness was somehow, inadequate. and in the hours nesince that debacle of an event, donald trump has only doubled down. he has made questioning vice president harris is blackness an actual campaign strategy. minutes after leaving leaving the stage he wrote on social media, crazy kamala is saying
6:07 pm
she's indian, not black, this is a big deal, stone cold phony, she uses everybody including her racial identity. this evening, as crowds gathered for a rally in harrisburg, pennsylvania, the trump campaign projected above the stage an image of harris next to a headline that reads, california's kamala harris becomes the first indian american u.s. senate her. then at the same rally, campaign advisor and lawyer, th went after vice president harris directly about her identity. >> i'm going to speak to you miss harris i am a strong woman, a mom, a lawyer and an american. and unlike you, kamala, i know where i come from. >> so that is the trump strategy to win black voters this november. that's the strategy.
6:08 pm
and then there is the harris strategy. in our go vice president harris made remarks at the convention of the sigma gamma rho story, one of the country's nine most prominent black fraternities and sororities, the ones that make up the divine nine, they have a century long history of political organizing, mobilizing voters in black communities across the country o and this year, with kamala harris on the top of the ticket the presence of online groups published this letter promising to meet this critical moment with an unprecedented voter registration, education and mobilization campaign. many of the 4 million members of the divine nine joined last week's organizing call for the group, win with black women, the call that raised more than $1.5 million for the harris campaign. many members of the divine nine are also political journalists. it is that community of black
6:09 pm
organizers that kamala harris spoke to tonight, just hours after her opponent used his time on stage to insult them. >> it was the same old show, the divisiveness and the disrespect, and let me just say, the american people deserve better. the american people deserve better. the american people deserve a leader who tells the truth, a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. we deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us. they are an essential source of our strength. >> it's so great to have all of
6:10 pm
you here with me but yamiche, how did trump's new strategy of questioning kamala harris and her blackness, how did that play? >> good evening, i'm interested to see what jalani is. you had journalists questioning whether or not it was a good use of the organizations time to bring donald trump to the annual convention because he has questioned democracy and obviously, some say, really cost january 6th in the capitol to happen. there were others who were
6:11 pm
genuinely curious, wanted to see and answer questions about how he would impact the black community, how he would win over people, so it started off with a little bit of tension e but a lot of open minds, and immediately when he started attacking rachel scott of abc news, people started to gasp and were really stunned by the way that he was talking to her even though we've seen him talk that way to a number of people, but people were still hoping maybe this time, he would have a little more decorum and then when he started attacking vice president harris and her identity, people started reacting saying that's a lie, that's not true and as someone who has been covering vice president harris for years now and now covering her campaign, i can tell you the clips that you played, talking about her parents, she often tells a story about how they met and how they used to push her in a stroller to go to protest as a young girl, this was someone who has very much articulated not only her identity but how her identity and their passion for civil rights, how it impacted her wanting to have
6:12 pm
justice and accountability from inside the justice system. there were a lot of people in the room who were frankly angry and wondering whether or not this was the best use of time right now for people. i was one of the journalists who was texting people in the harris campaign and i wanted to know what their reaction was. and i got back people saying, donald trump was unhinged, it was below the belt, even for him, to question her identity. t i have to remind people not only did she go to howard, but she joined the first historically black sorority, alpha count the alpha -- alpha kappa alpha, she has been someone who has just her black identity as well as her indian american identity. so it was really a sight to behold. i've seen a lot of remarkable things covering trump but today, it stood out. >> yeah, it is something to behold even if you weren't in
6:13 pm
the room and dean cobb, you were in the room, i do wonder, this is a strategy, this wasn't just trump howling off, stthis was something he repeated, they had a screen ready, a projector shot ready at the rally, they have alina habba questioning her blackness, it's as if, donald trump doesn't understand the long legacy of racism associated with questioning someone's blackness. it was a staggering oversight. what are your athoughts about all of this? >> first off, you know, to yamiche's point, this was very much reminiscent of a comedian trying out new material, and the time since kamala harris has become the presumptive nominee you see the people on
6:14 pm
their side really struggled to figure out what to say about her or how to approach this, so it seemed as if they were just trotting out the next thing, let's just say she's really not a black person. that portrays a stunning a grant of african americans, certainly stunning ignorance of african american history. there's a long history of people who you would categorize as multiracial who are considered african american. if we went through an entire list we would talk about virtually half of the people that are in the history books, so, that is something that not only is it frankly ignorant, but also, inflammatory. and so, i don't think that this works certainly for the audience that he was talking to today but i think it was meant to be for an audience that was outside of that room. they are just kind of throwing darts and seeing what sticks, saying things that are insulting, like a comedian
6:15 pm
seeing which lines get the laugh. >> i wonder what you think of the strategy, it's not overtly questioning her blackness, it's also, going after code switching, fox news has a chiron from last night, talking about kamala harris, her different accents that she uses during rallies, jd vance in arizona it's nice that harris put on a southern accent for a georgia audience, trump said the same thing in his rally in pennsylvania. this is all part of a portfolio of questioning how black she really is. is this what has been missing? >> it's rich because we end up not talking about wany of the issues. we end up not talking about the challenges that this country is it's a long-standing republican strategy of, you know, republicans going into these black spaces, not always to recruit new black voters or black supporters but sometimes,
6:16 pm
signaling to white moderates that you know, they are willing to go and be around the black people, they are willing to speak directly to these audiences which may not be supportive, they are not necessarily racist, the way that they might be getting labeled based off of their policies are based off of their practices or who they hire and who they engage with. so this is a long-standing strategy and i do think it's important that underneath the lies, the outrageous things that trump says that we continue to stay focused on some of the things that he sometimes says that can possibly break through. in that conversation, he is doing this long-standing sort of attack on immigrants, and really trying to speak directly to black voters, where he is sort of blaming immigration for economic challenges that the black community may be facing, and not, you know, talking about the role of corporations, the role of the trump tax cuts,
6:17 pm
the role of these different factors which actually led to the ways in which our economy may not be producing for everyone on that level and the work that actually has to be done. and so we have to do the work to make sure that people understand that when those trump tax cuts expire next year, we want a kamala harris at the table to negotiate with and do the work to move us forward. it's also just rich to have his vice presidential nominee jd vance, follow this up, given that he has biracial children. it's kind of sick that he would play along with this, as a someone who claims to want to be a good father and talks about being a good family man, that he would allow this three- time cheater on his wife, someone with five children by three different women, to get up and put him in this position
6:18 pm
as you know, to make attacks and level attacks that would actually attack his own family. >> i will say, as a mixed race person myself, the thing about being mixed races you can be two things at once. donald trump is not somebody who understands that. there's a lot more to talk about, we will take a quick break. please hang with me. coming up, donald trump calls himself a victim of a two- tiered justice system and you did hear that correctly. more on trump's disastrous appearance at national association of black journalists and later, tonight the country was treated to a split screen of how two campaigns are easing two very different strategies to win voters in november. stay with us. with us ♪ ♪ i got the power of 3. i lowered my a1c, cv risk, and lost some weight.

when i was diagnosed with h-i-v, i didn't know who i would be. but here i am... being me. keep being you... and ask your healthcare provider about the number one prescribed h-i-v treatment, biktarvy. biktarvy is a complete, one-pill, once-a-day treatment used for h-i-v in many people whether you're 18 or 80. with one small pill, biktarvy fights h-i-v to help you get to undetectable—and stay there whether you're just starting or replacing your current treatment. research shows that taking h-i-v treatment as prescribed and getting to and staying undetectable prevents transmitting h-i-v through sex. serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure. rare, life-threatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. do not take biktarvy if you take dofetilide or rifampin. tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines and supplements you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis. if you have hepatitis b do not stop taking biktarvy without talking to your healthcare provider. common side effects were diarrhea, nausea,

swing state, at least that one will be in richer's hands. the bad news is other election deniers will be in charge of their local elections and they can have a huge impact this november. yesterday nate silver relaunched his election forecast and it shows kamala harris as the favorite to win the popular vote, but it also shows donald trump i had of harris when it comes to the electoral college. there are good odds we may be barreling towards an incredibly tight race, one that will be decided by a few thousand votes in one swing state for another. and wouldn't you know it, this week rolling stone came out with new reporting showing pro- trump election deniers are workingrs as local election officials in at least 16 counties across the 16 battleground states. now these are not all necessarily giant, high population counties like maricopa county, but unfortunately that may not really matter.
