tv   Inside With Jen Psaki  MSNBC  August 5, 2024 5:00pm-6:00pm PDT

5:00 pm
be sure to join us tomorrow night for special coverage on what will be a very big day in politics and vice president harris expected to announce her running mate ahead of the first rally together in philadelphia. and that is tonight's readout, you can follow me on tiktok and on instagram and do follow our show accounts on instagram and tiktok. inside with jen psaki starts now. >> okay, all of the
5:01 pm
anticipation, all of the guessing, all of the speculation, the texting with your friends from college about who's going to be the, i know you are all doing it, about who the vice presidential pick will be. kamala harris expected to announce her vice presidential pick tomorrow, and then, the two of them will hold their first rally together in philadelphia tomorrow night. in the last few minutes, the event was put on the white house public schedule for 5:30 p.m. eastern. so plan your evening accordingly. that means right now, as we speak, less than 24 hours before the event, vice president harris is either finalizing her decision on her own version of a whiteboard or maybe she's already made it, she could be making calls maybe breaking the news of the contenders who didn't make the cut or maybe breaking the news
5:02 pm
to the one who did. what a moment that is. that could be happening right now. and i promise you, if we learn anything over the course of the next hour, not just the josh schapiro, he's playing basketball with his son, if we see a puff of white smoke over harris's house in washington, we will tell you all about it. look, picking a running mate is a really big moment in a political campaign and over the course of the next hour, we are going to dive into and talk about all the potential pics, what is likely playing into her selection process and how the campaign changes once a running mate is announced. it's a new stage. the one thing you can expect immediately, is a five day tour of battleground states from harris and her vp pick. and after that, they will likely start campaigning separately. that means, and a week from now, we are about to get double the campaign events, double the fundraising, double the high level voices that can go after trump and vance and push for a proactive message. now, i'm sure you are all
5:03 pm
thinking, that sounds great, but we really just want to know who the pic is right now. and believe me, i do, too. i'm dying to know. but it's important to remember that this entire process has already been so condensed, typically, it would go on for months, there would be long stretches of vetting of diving into the records of these potential running mates, polling, of candidate interviews, i mean, to put it into perspective, just over two weeks ago, kamala harris was the vice presidential nominee and now she is picking one. that is a whole lot to get done in a very short period of time. and the fact that she is about to announce her vice presidential pick and then hit the ground running with them in a multi-day swing state tour, that tells you a lot of things about her. chief among them is that she's incredibly decisive, and we've seen that already, we saw that 24 hours after president biden dropped out of the race when she visited the campaign office to rally staff and supporters, we saw it the next day when she
5:04 pm
had the campaign trail for her first rally since she jumped in the race. in the state, by the way, where trump had held the republican national convention and that event just took place 40 hours after biden dropped out. we saw that late last week when her campaign announced they hired an all-star group of some of the biggest names in democratic politics to add to an already seasoned team. and we saw that this weekend when trump try to back out of the debate that he had already agreed to and reschedule one with, you guessed it, fox news. she punched back within hours, saying, quote, it's an interesting town -- anytime, anyplace becomes one specific time, one specific save space. and i'll bet she is using that decisiveness right now. on this incredibly quick timeline. i mean, all of that, has happened in the past 15 days. that shows decisiveness. it also shows fearlessness. i mean, typically in politics, there is a lot of waiting around, a lot of meeting with consultants, a lot of calls, poll testing, a lot of delays.
5:05 pm
this is not that, this is a very different campaign. that's partly because of the condensed timeline that none of us could have predicted a couple of months ago, this is simply a shorter runway than usual, less time to get bogged down, less time to overthink things. of course a big part of it is due to harris herself, because of who she is today as a candidate because of how decisive and fearless she is as a candidate and how much she has grown and evolved since her first presidential campaign. if we wait these last few hours before one of those remaining vp contenders gets the call that may change their life forever, remember, leadership comes from the top, kamala harris has set the expectation that this will be an aggressive, fearless, decisive ticket. so whoever she picks, whose ever life is about to change, that is what their assignment is going to be.
5:06 pm
i love talking politics with them and they both join me now. let me start with you, jim, we are all waiting for tea leaves, how many wikipedia changes there are, josh appear oh playing basketball, where is tim walz going, what is mark kelly tweeting but you've been in these meetings, you were in a senior role in 2008 when joe biden was picked as the running mate and what we like to do is take people inside the process, so, what are those conversations, what have they been like over the last 24 hours or what might they be like right now? >> the very first thing you need to do is do no harm, so
5:07 pm
they will look closely at the vetting, you talked about this earlier, we've never had this fast of a pic before, so air colder, the former attorney general who is running the vetting process has hopefully had enough time to dive deep into these things because what you don't want is a disaster like the jd vance pick. the second thing you are doing is trying to make you know, a decision about who could be the president of the united states, the most important pieces, who could actually be the president, and then the question you need to ask is who do i want to be in a room with for the next 4 to 8 years, who can actually, who can i get along with, somebody who can do something and political hacks like me will be whispering saying this is what the polling says, this is how you can take the state with this pick, and so the vp, harris is going to have to balance all of these things and make a very decisive pick that is incredibly important, if you think about this, she's going to get two more free moments, tomorrow when she names her vp and her speech at the democratic national convention. that's it. the rest of it, she will have
5:08 pm
to earn so this is a very big moment. >> a big couple of weeks, also the president and vice president typically have lunch every week together. so you better like the person. claire, this is operating on a very condensed timeline which i think is so important. it means it does require this level of gut instinct and less of the reliance on consultants and polling and lengthy, lengthy vetting which i think has been good for vice president harris so far, how do you think it will impact who she picks, or will it? >> why don't we do it this way all the time, sorry, jim, i think having campaigns that are 90 days long are perfect for america. and i think it really works to kamala harris's advantage. her vice presidential pick, i have a little bit of a different view because yes i think she is going to want to find somebody that has the right chemistry
5:09 pm
but one thing she's done in the campaign so far, i think she surprised people, people underestimated her. she has a very clear vision about this campaign being aspirational, and positive and joyous, and laughing and smiling and having the ability to attack the trump team with joy and good humor, i think it's one of the things she will be looking for in a vice president. it is one thing to be able to read off a list of things that donald trump has done that are horrendously horrible, it's another thing to do it, and maintain the atmosphere of a joyous campaign, of a campaign that makes people feel good about voting again, makes people feel good about our country again. that is the contrast in this campaign right now and i think she's going to be very careful to pick a vice president that
5:10 pm
can bring that e those to the conversation. >> it has been joyful the last couple of weeks, seeing how it has all been in the political world, so let me ask you, it sounds like you are thinking it might be a surprise, someone's life is about to change. hopefully it's someone joyful, but there's also, a lot that will happen now, now that there's a vice presidential pick tomorrow. you are doubling the star power on the trail, fundraising, you have another person out there, what else happens within a campaign when a running mate is picked? >> you put an entire organization around that person, they've already named her, the chief of staff, advisors, jen pulmonary who we all know, she was a big advisor to clinton, she will build the staff around them, you put a schedule together, that person, their spouses life changes forever because they will be on the road, too, their kids, their family members, they will all have to adjust to all this,
5:11 pm
jen had it right, their entire life is going to change in the course of one phone call. they are going to be very happy, they are going to put down the phone and inc. to themselves, oh my god, now what, because everything changes. and so, you know, their life for the next 91 days is not going to be theirs anymore. they will be on the road and they will do everything that the harris team doesn't want to do. they will get all the dinners and fundraisers they don't want to do and that's okay because they have a shot to be the vice president of the united states. >> let me ask you, claire, i love what you said about how this person might be a surprise, hopefully they are joyful continuing the kind of campaign that she's run, they will also be an attack dog just as she has been, i think that is part of her campaign as well. and some of these finalists have done some interesting things. tim walz pioneered weird, shapiro has his rep about how anti-trump -- anti-freedom trump is, do you have a take on who is best suited for that type of job? >> i honestly think she has not
5:12 pm
risk the situation, i don't think any of these will be a problem on the ticket. i think they are terrific, they are all good communicators. i will say this, tim walz has a way of communicating that makes you think that if you ran into him at the hardware store he would have good advice for you. he does come across as someone who is relatable in the midwest and remember, we are talking about pennsylvania, wisconsin and michigan. these are places where tim walz and his hot dish recipe and you know, his going to minard's and getting a furnace filter, that is all going to play well in those places. i'm not saying that it will be him, but i think he can be a good attack dog and still be funny and joyful. >> no question about it.
5:13 pm
the country has gotten to know him. so we only have a minute left but i've got to come to you and say, what about you, is there someone you think would be a good attack dog, fit the mold of that? >> look, i agree with claire, i think all three of these people, it comes down to these three, these are great pics. we have such a deep event. i don't think it's about an attack dog, it's about someone who complements the ticket and gives you energy. remember when will clinton picked al gore and they were the young energy pick, you remember joe biden sprinting on the stage as ip, -- vp, that's the energy that we want. >> we will talk about that later in the show, thanks for joining me tonight. coming up, donald trump spent as much time this weekend attacking fellow republicans as he did going after kamala harris and now the harris campaign is taking advantage of a party in disarray.

quote
5:15 pm
i was critical of the president back in 2015 and 2016 and he looked at me as someone who can contribute meaningfully and he asked me to be his running mate. this is not a vengeful guy. >> donald trump is not a vengeful guy. says jd vance. i mean, it's obviously ridiculous, given his track record, but let's look at the last couple of days, trump is endorsing not one but two different republicans in a washington state congressional race. why? because he wants to defeat another republican, congressman dan newhouse because newhouse voted to impeach him for inciting the january 6th capitol riot. just a reminder, trump is running to be president again, he's in a tight race with harris, she would think he
5:16 pm
might be focused on that, right? but instead he is spending a lot of time and energy attacking fellow republicans. like this weekend when he called for a purge of the republican party and attacked the former lieutenant governor of georgia, jeff duncan who has endorsed harris, and a few hours later at a rally in georgia trump repeatedly attacked the states republican secretary of state and republican governor who is very popular, brian kemp who both refused to go along with trump's lie that he won the state in 2020. >> brian kemp, your governor, who i got elected, by the way. very disloyal person. very disloyal, they are doing everything possible to make 2024 difficult for republicans to win, you can do a lot better and you will do a lot better with a better governor, the state has become a laughing stock. he's a bad guy, he's a disloyal guy and he's a very average governor. little brian, little brian. bad guy.
5:17 pm
>> it's pretty clear from all of this is trump won't stop until he read the republican party of everyone who isn't sufficiently obedient. which is why some republicans aren't just speaking out against them, they are endorsing kamala harris, in fact campaign announced a new group called republicans for harris which launched over the weekend with over two dozen republican endorsements including former governors, members of congress and trump administration officials. one of those republicans is joe walsh, a former congressman from illinois and he joins me now. looking at this list, it's a very impressive list. a lot of people have been pretty public opponents of trump, so tell me a little more about what the group is going to be doing and what specifically they will do to try and defeat him? >> jen, great to be with you, look, what we want to do is give republicans around this country especially in the battleground states, the courage to come out and say we are better than donald trump.
5:18 pm
we know there are a lot of republicans in michigan and wisconsin and pennsylvania, who don't want to support trump. they are afraid, because as you know, there's a lot of pressure, there's a lot of pressure locally and when you publicly oppose trump as a republican, you pretty much and your career as a republican, that is a scary thing. you talk about how the party has become a cult, he has already purged people who are not obedient to him. what we are going to do this campaign as we are going to get out there and tell republicans all throughout this country, that we are better, you are better than trump, and doggone it, support kamala harris, the only person who can keep this guy out of the white house.
5:19 pm
>> that all sounds good, to everybody watching. i want to ask you, not that you can get into the mind of donald trump but you are familiar with what it's like to be attacked by him and i can't figure out a couple of his attacks. i mean, he went after brian kemp over the weekend, is a very popular republican governor of georgia. if he wants to win, i can -- i assume, what do you think is going on there? >> jen, it's a tough question because in truth, we don't know what is going on there, in truth, much of what trump says, doesn't make sense. we try so hard to normalize this guy. he is a horrible human being. he lies as he breathes, he doesn't give a about anybody but himself, he is utterly un- american, he's a sociopath, he's a psychopath, he is in capable of bringing people together, so at one level, jen, it makes no sense what he is saying but at the other level, he wants to beat this party down, i believe this, until, the only people in my former party are people who are on
5:20 pm
their knees, pledging to him every day. it is going to be a party that shrinks. and there's a great opportunity here to convince republicans that kamala harris is american, kamala harris supports democracy and the rule of law, so come on, stand up now. >> you may have just answer the next thing i wanted to ask you about which is, you know, there are people, some of the people who are on this republicans for harris committee they said i don't agree with her on policy issues but this is a moment where the democracy is at stake. you are having private conversations, so what are you saying to fellow republicans, current or former who may find it difficult to vote for a emigrant for president? >> i'm a weird guy in that i come from maga, i voted for trump in 2016, i'm a reformed maga gang banger, i talked to these folks every single day and what i tell them is this, this is like a really where --
5:21 pm
rare and unique moment in history where you have the opportunity to quite literally, save this experiment. you nailed it, jen, it's not about policy. and i say that over and over, kamala harris and i probably disagree on most policy. this is not about policy. this is about preserving this thing that we all believe in, and the other thing i say to republicans throughout the country is, you are better than trump, trump believes that you are cool, he believes you are intolerant, he believes you are angry all the time, that is not you, you are better than that. that seems to resonate with a lot of republicans who are on the fence. >> it's really interesting, thank you so much for joining us. recovering former maga gang banger, i appreciate you joining me. you will never support which justices are dealing with more news that he took even

5:26 pm
we managed to get through a few weeks without a massive ethics scandal surrounding the supreme court, i guess, good for us but that streak ended today because today we learned justice thomas failed to
5:27 pm
disclose even more private flights provided by conservative billionaire harlan crow. back in november 2010, justice thomas and his wife flew from hawaii to new zealand on his private jet before flying back on the jet a week later. the letter goes on, mr. crow was also a passenger on these flights. today, justice thomas has never disclosed this private jet travel on any financial disclosure forms even though justice thomas has amended disclosures to reflect other international travel on esther crow's private jet. if you will recall, it was exposed a 2019 trip to indonesia and others, and the outcry prompted thomas to formally disclose those trips and filings submitted this year. that begs the question, why did he fail to disclose the trips
5:28 pm
over a decade ago, maybe because he thought he could get away with it, of course, what might be helpful is a code of ethics with some teeth like the one biden proposed last week. here's what justice gore such told foxnews in an interview that aired yesterday. >> when the spotlight is on you, when the government is coming after you and don't you want a ferociously independent judge and a jury of your peers to make those decisions, isn't that you're right as an american? so i just say, be careful. >> i don't want to over dramatize but i mean, be careful, that sounds a little like a thinly veiled threat from the justice to the united states. thomas didn't disclose the flights, only the indonesia
5:29 pm
trip. i'm not saying we should be surprised here necessarily in a mock going to ask you to get into his head on how to explain his thinking but it just feels like there's this pattern of the belief that there's no consequences. and i just wonder, we've talked about this before, what can happen to change this behavior? >> well, at this point, they are not wrong, there are no consequences. and what we are seeing, i think, in the drip, in the steady drip the way in which the court really does not think that they are obligated to share all this information as fully as possible. we should never have had to request this information that was initially not disclosed. but then, to drip out some of the information but not all of the information and to have these continual reports telling us about more trips, quite
5:30 pm
lavish trips with the same individual, it's deeply concerning, this is an actual kind of scandal or at least would be, if we were in normal times, and we are not in normal times. you know, when aid for his had to step down it was democrats who leaned on him, it was lyndon johnson's closest friend and johnson had to call and say listen, you've got to step down for something that pales in comparison to the revelations that we've had about some of these financial dealings and so, we are not in normal times, we have a dysfunctional congress, we have a republican party that will not engage on this issue of ethics, and so essentially there are no consequences, that doesn't mean that this is not deeply troubling and really quite concerning in terms of the courts independence which ironically, gorsuch was just talking about. >> i don't want to over
5:31 pm
dramatize what he said when he said, be careful, but it does sound a bit, well he was asked about joe biden, president biden supreme court reform puzzles, that's what he said in response. what did you make of that? >> you know, jen, i didn't take it as a threat, i took it as condescension, to be honest. no one cavalierly approaching the idea of supreme court reform, and i think i shared with you, i've had my own very slow evolution on this issue, but i always felt there would have to be a responsible process, one of the reasons why i joined president biden supreme court commission when i was asked to join in 2022, is because, i believed that should reform happen at some point in the future, there needs to be a process, a careful process and so i'm not sure how it would seem cavalier for the president
5:32 pm
to have several years ago, assembled a group of very prominent lawyers and legal minds, a bipartisan group and committed -- created a commission, just asked for study of the issues, and in the midst of revelations, that have come as a result of the press, from propublica about these violations that several of the justices have engaged in. we also have the upside down flag at justice alito's home, we've had all of this stuff happening, we've had, you know, one of the republican religious individuals who was trying to lobby before, kind of confessed that he had been lobbying the
5:33 pm
court and purchased a building across the street of the court to have better access, so so much has happened in the two years since the commission that certainly has moved me but i think has moved the president as well, so for justice gorsuch to say be careful with a tone of condescension as though something reckless or cavalier is being considered, that's how i took that remark. >> it's such an important point and as you noted, he had a long journey on this, you know, he had been the former chairman of the judiciary committee, been very thoughtful on this, it took him a long time to get to this point and a lot of the actions prompted it. vice president harris, endorsed the reform by president biden and she's spoken about court expansion and things like that, what do you want to hear from her about the court as this campaign unfolds? >> well, what i want to hear from the candidate and from the party, from the democratic party, is an explanation to the
5:34 pm
voters of how supreme court reform would happen because what i don't want, is to get on the other side of this election and even if the vice president is elected president, to have people say will change the supreme court, this is not something that can happen by the president, we would need to have both houses of congress prepared to pass legislation to make any of these reforms happen and have some teeth to them. and so, i think it's important, and comment on the democrats and the candidates, to begin talking about the need for the democrats to win the house and the senate, f, what people want is to have some kind of supreme court reform. that's really not on the president. congress holds the power over the supreme court, to decide their salaries, to decide how many justices are on the court and congress has used that power, when andrew johnson nominated his attorney general, johnson may be the second worst president in history, nominating his attorney general to fill an open position on the court, congress eliminated the seat, they were so annoyed, congress started the power, we
5:35 pm
started off at six justices, we have as many justices as we have had federal circuit, we are back to nine, and we've got 13 federal circuits, it would be logical to have 13 justices on the supreme court but all of that power including the jurisdiction of the court, sits with congress, the president can sign a bill but the president cannot make the bill happen, so it needs to be explained to voters, so that they understand that when they get there and it's not enough to just vote for the president, you have to also understand the importance of having the house and the senate. >> such an important reminder. i feel like you need to do a ted talk on this so they understand the branches of government. i know you are an olympic's super fanlike me so enjoy the olympics this morning, we will all be watching. thank you for joining me.

i was on a work trip when the pulmonary embolism happened. but because i have 23andme, i was aware of that gene. that saved my life. okay, i mean i worked most of my adult life in clinical communications and i understand the strategy of getting ahead of stories, sometimes you've got to get the news out. but yesterday rfk jr. proved sometimes maybe just keep your mouth shut. i mean, we already know this is
5:41 pm
a guy who is found himself in the middle, he's put himself in the middle, of some unusual controversies, to put it diplomatically like say, the strange allegation that he once ate a dog which he said was really a goat. or, even more bizarre the claim he made that a warm eight part of his reign. but incredibly, rfk jr. has found a way to one up himself and all of those stories. in a video that was apparently intended to blunt the impact of a negative news story that had not yet come out, kennedy casually recounts to roseanne barr of all people, i can't explain it, a wildly bizarre incident that took place 10 years ago. the story goes like this, so one day, while driving to new york for a fun day of falcon in with his friends, as one does, he came across the carcass of a black bear cub which he said was hit by a minivan ahead of him, so, what did he decide to do, i'll let him take it from
5:42 pm
there. >> so i pulled over and i picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van because i was going to scan the bear, it was very good condition and put them in my refrigerator and you can do that in new york state, you can get a bear tag for a roadkill bear. >> he was going to scan the bear, okay, anyway, the dead bear carcass is in his trunk, so he goes on to enjoy a day with the bear carcass in his trunk and goes on for the day of falconing with his friend obviously and it was glorious, i'm sure. but then, according to kennedy, he realizes he's late for a dinner at peter luger steakhouse in brooklyn so rather than go home, he drives and you can see the map, about an hour and a half with a dead baby bear in his trunk to brooklyn for dinner at one of the most famous steakhouses in
5:43 pm
the country. of course, the dinner goes late, as dinners often do, and kennedy said he suddenly realized he would need to go straight to the airport to catch a flight, so for anyone who has ever stashed a dead there in the trunk of their car while having dinner and needed to hop on a plane, the next steps may sound obvious. >> somebody said let's go put the bear in central park and we will make it look like he got hit by a bike. so everybody thought that is a great idea. so we went and did that and we thought it would be amusing for whoever found it or something. >> everybody thought that's a great idea, really? i mean, who am i to question the decision-making on the dumping of a bear carcass after day of falconing and a steakhouse but of course, it turned out, it wasn't such a great idea, no kidding? the mysterious dead bear in social -- central part ended up being a big news story. here's
5:44 pm
the thing, the story kennedy was trying to get ahead of by posting his strange video where i just want to know one more time, roseanne barr, she randomly appears, that story came out this morning and didn't include nearly the level of granular detail that kennedy himself provided, the bear incident takes up a total of two paragraphs in the story but, they did have a picture, and if you are wondering out there what the photo of rfk jr. and the dead bear looks like, it looks exactly like what you are imagining, i think. i mean, like that. this has been a weird presidential cycle, with lots of weirdness. but rfk jr. has managed to stand out, and there are some losers in the story, obviously, like the bear, for example, and probably the kennedy campaign. but perhaps the only winner, maybe south dakota governor kristi noem, who somehow and possibly, is now sharing the podium in the competition for the most disturbing and bizarre
