and of course i'm biased but semper fidelis. always faithful. i really do think that donald trump exemplifies that motto. his record and his vision is a vision of always being faithful. elevating military service to a central part of the trump vance ticket. first vance tried unsuccessfully to attack vice president harris' running mate governor tim walz on his military service despite the fact walz served 24 years in the national guard. now vance is trying to use his military credentials to boost his running mate donald trump. as always faithful to those in uniform. the main problem with that is,

well, donald trump. as president, donald trump was commander-in-chief of the armed forces but also publicly disrespectful to members of the armed forces. for example, any time a u.s. service member dies while serving our country abroad, they are given what is known as a dignified transfer. their remains are brought back into the u.s. through dover air force base and they are carried by a team of military personnel off the airplane and onto the vehicle that will ultimately take the remains to the families. now presidents frequently attend dignified transfers as an act of respect. those who have given their life as president trump told the press he went to tons of them. his words were he had attended many, many dignified transfers. for the record in september of 2020, there had been 96 dignified transfers since donald trump took office. he attended four of them.

is that what jd vance means when he says trump is always faithful? trump reportly said 2,000 american marines were suckers and losers. why should i go to that cemetery? it is filled with losers. the trump white house denied that story when it came out and of course they did. it would obviously be terrible to call them losers and suckersh and be caught doing so. but the problem with white house denial even then was that trump had already been talking about american service members like that for literally decades. here is how trump spoke about john mccain. a navy captain who served more than 20 years and spent five- and-a-half of those years as a prisoner of war in vietnam. >> the way trump looks at it, he is at least better than anyone else in the race. beginning with john mccain.

>> he was captured. being captured make you a hero? i don't know. i don't like losers. he's not a war hero. he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured okay? i hate to tell you. >> trump likes people that weren't captured and killed andr not those losers and suckers who died for the country. when it comes to trump's own military service? well, there isn't any. trump got four deferments to avoid being drafted in the vietnam war. one was for bone spurs in his feet. in 2018, the daughters of the now deceased queens podiatrist who gave trump that bone spur diagnosis, they said their father gave that to trump as a favor to trump's father. trump's fire was the

podiatrist's landlord. the podiatrist got better treatment as one of trump's father's tenants. family said they don't even know if trump was even examined for his alleged bone spurs. that doesn't mean that donald trump believes he hasn't served. in a strange twisted trumpy version of reality. i will say if you have children in the room, you may want to mute the television. what trump is toabout to say he is lewd. >> never got a social disease. >> it is a dangerous world out there. it is like vietnam. sort of like. >> it is your personal vietnam. >> you said that many time. >> a very brave soldier. >> they said more people were killed by women in fact than killed in vietnam. >> yes, that is true. >> so you get criticized for that statement, but that statement. >> i went sas far to say you a braver than any vietnam vet because you are out there screwing a lot of women.

>> men are as dangerous to women as women are to men. >> donald trump considers avoiding stds , sexually transmitted diseases, his own personal vietnam. while trump thinks of john mccain as iea loser for actuall serving in vietnam, trump thinks he should get the congressional medal of honor for his service in his personal vietnam. of avoiding stds . that is who jd vance thinks is always being faithful to those who put on the uniform. you don't actually even have to reach into the distant past to see just how much respect or disrespect donald trump has for the military. here is trump roughly 24 hours ago explaining why he thinks the medal, he gave a billionaire conservative donor why he thinks that is better than the highest military award in the country. >> we gave miriam the

presidential medal of freedom. that's the highest award you can get as a civilian. it is much better. because everyone gets muthe congressional medal of honor that soldiers, they are either in very bad shape. she gets it and she is healthy. beautiful woman. >> pat representative pat ryan who served two combat tour ins iraq and earned two thank you gentlemen so much for being here. let me start with you congressman ryan. >> my blood pressure, was already high, noway i am just

outraged and discussed. just on behalf of those that i have served with. those i lost. under my command. my fellow west point cadets. i was just a west point graduation. just a few months ago. how that person in trump who is so degrades an denigrates the honor could be the commander-in- chief. it is not just the race to be president but commander-in- chief and he just completely fails to understand. what serving something better than one's self is. he cannot go near the white house again. and i hope every single american sees this. as you outlined it it is another in a long never ending set of insulting those who have served. it is so deeply unpatriotic.

and un-american. it has to be soundly rejected. >> it really feels like there is, it does feel like an obsession on trump's park. he talks about people who get killed in batter suckers and losers. it seems every accusation is a confess of a sort. do you think there is a particular linkage to these two things? >> i think the congressman gets it pretty well. trump is uncapable of seeing beyond himself. understanding why someone would do something that doesn't directly benefit them. especially material benefit.

doesn't satisfy their appetites. he looks at people who died. why would you voluntarily put yourself in that situation when you cannot do that and also satisfy your appetites. that time, the civilian award. she is still alive and beautiful. that to me is the key. to organize a military parade

for him as president. but the reporting said he did not any quote wounded guys in the parade. because this doesn't look good me. just talk to me if you will about being in combat. and having a commander-in- chief. believe something like that. that the people deserving of valor were the ones who hadn't been either hurt or given the ultimate sacrifice their lives in battle. >> it is so beyond disgraceful. he is so selfish that he is truly incapable. there are 60 living medal of honor recipients in the united states of america. it is the stmost, held in the

highest esteem. and it is not that anyone would ever seek to have a medal of honor. is the gop going to continue to stand behind this guy who now for year after year after year. remember the family who spoke about this. who is disgraced so many that we hold up as the model of what our country is about. what service and patriotism is about. we need a call on everybody. they need to denounce this statement. at least this issue.

>> yeah it isis worth noting th generals who served with trump, at least four of them do not support donald trump anymore. that's a statement in and of itself. jd vance who brought military service to the fore in recent weeks was asked about trump's comments last night today. this is what he had to say. let's take a listen. >> this is a guy who loves and honors our veterans. i don't think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the presidential medal of freedom is any way den way denigrating military honors. he was saying a nice thing about the person he liked. >> this is, i just, jd vance thinks literally denigrating the medal of honor is not denigrating the medal of honor. the gaslighting is almost, chef's kiss. i have never seen anything like it.

have you? >> you have to remember, vance is someone who relatively recently was describing to his friends, donald trump as america's hitler. and today is donald trump's running for the white house. he doesn't have any particular core. doesn't seem to believe anything other than what he needs to say to get to the next wrung to get more power. and so of course he is going to ignore the plain reading of what the former president said. the most plain understanding of what he said and tried to spin it as actually he was just complimenting. complimenting. in addition to everything we discussed so far, it is key that trump does not understand what it means to be a citizen.

>> i totally agree. he is running on a ticket of being law and order when he is a felon under criminal indictment. and actively denigrated the armed services. none of it makes any sense. >> this is where i think there

is a tremendous, notes only opportunity, in my view. to continue to lean into being the party of patriots. being the party of the true values. in response to trump-esque authoritarian figure. she has taken command of the race. she is anchoring her framing of being the party of freedom.

they want to put me in prison. it has never happened before in the history of our country. i did nothing wrong. i have crooked judges. i have crooked prosecutors. and they are all democrats. >> donald trump appeared to have prison on his mind yesterday as he talked to reporter at his new jersey golf club. and the juxtaposition of politics and criminal court is not ideal for him. not only is trump awaiting sentencing on his conviction in new york on 34 felony counts set to happen in a matter of weeks, but special council jack smith's federal case, while will is no chance trump will be tried in washington dc before

november, there is a chance there could be action in the courtroom between now and election day. in the new piece today, new york magazine former federal prosecutor ellie honen writes if you hope trump faces accountability for trying to steal the 2020 election before voter head to the polls for the next one, don't despair. not fully anyway. judge chutkan still can and i believe will order an evidentiary hearing before voters head to the polls. if that happens, brace for a series of dramatic in-court encounters. joining me now is the great andrew weissman. cohost of the msmbc podcast prosecuting donald trump. it has been far too long. i know you had an op ed this summer suggesting much the same of allie's piece.

that these hearings could be a real thing this fall. can you talk a little bit about your level of bullishness that will happen and could anything serve as a model for something like this? >> i think that the big picture . this will tell husband department of justice to get rid of it. those will go away. the only chance of these cases having full blown trials, not just sort of this mini trial is if kamala harris were to be

elected. between now and the election, you can be sure donald trump is going to be fighting like crazy to do what he has done very, very well. which is to delay everything. just being able to hold people accountable. the new york state court looks frankly better than the federal courts and that. but starting on september 5th, we will have a status conference before judge chutkan where she will decide whether there is this so-called mini trial where she has been told by the supreme court i'm certain of the issues of the case, to have a hearing to flesh out factually, what has been charged and whether this is official conduct. that the former president engaged in. it could be immune from

prosecution. taking actions as a candidate. and i think the model for this. georgia had essentially a mini trial in connection if you were a member with mark meadows. that the closest model to what judge chutkan could do. if they were to go forward, we would likely get new evidence that we were not aware of from january 6th hearings. >> do you think, i mean, it feels like the biggest sort of

dispute. coming from state election officials. officials. >> you would have people at the state side. and the people who actually made the recording. to talk about what was said to give some color to the context in which there's conversations occurred. you can also have people from within the white house. and again, remember, just because they are in the white house doesn't mean that all of their testimony will be

something that can't be heard. especially if you can share in the white house they were acting on behalf of candidate trump. there is a big argument for that. if you say mind me a certain number of votes that wasn't something he was doing, you know, as president. it is worth noting while we do know a lot from the january 6th committee hearings, remember, there are a lot of who within the white house called to testify who claimed privileges and didn't testify over direct conversations with the former president. it is well mike pence by all accounts. didn't testify in the january 6th committee hearings. but he has been in the grand jury in the dc case.

so those are all ways in which we could be getting new information at a time that is honestly quite explosive in terms of the election. >> that's a great point. is there a case to be made, we know that vice president harris is sort of discouraging people when they start chanting lock him up at her rallies. she doesn't want to be seen as being involved in this in any way, how much sensitivity do you think this is in terms of the timing? >> i think kamala harris is being incredibly careful because remember, she is the sitting vice president. and she like president biden has a view, that for pending criminal matters, that is something left to the department of justice. and they don't want to weigh in. that is distinct contrast from

former president trump's view. one he exemplified in office. i do think that it will be raised by donald trump. that this shouldn't be these kinds of things happening before the election. but i don't think it is somebody who has been at the department of justice for over 20 years, it does not raise a concern about the so-called 60 day or 90 day rule. because that is about not making a covert case overt during that period of time. i don't think that policy applies. i do think we are running out of time.

that was donald trump at a fundraiser last year. it is a little hard to hear. it is not the only time donald trump has done something like this. he hosted a fundraiser. with the minimum price of admission was $250,000 which by the way is more than three times the median annual household income in this country. trump promised the crowd of billionaires at that fundraiser if they voted for him he would work to keep their taxes low.

he praised one of the richest men for firing union workers during a live event on an actual microphone. and donald trump continues to adopt a working man schtich and continue to be written about as an avatar of a new kind of economic populism in the republican party though trump and vance have almost no policy to that end. now, at the same time, there has been a lot of speculation that kamala harris must get specific about her own policy vision. it was part of vice president

harris' new proposal to tackle one of the key drivers of inflation. the rising cost of housing. >> we will end america's housing shortage by building 3 million new homes and rentals. that are affordable for the middle class. first time home buyers $25,000 to help with the down-payment on a new home. but here is what donald trump would do. if his project 2025 agenda is put into effect, it will add around $1,000 a year to the typical american mortgage. we will provide $6,000 in tax relief to families during the first year of a child's life. compare my plan with what

housing piece. she wants to provide a $25,000 subsidy for first time home buyers. i think the median average price, the median priced home in america is $4,957. what do you make of this proposal? is it sufficient? >> yeah. i mean, this is very smart policy and very smart politics. it is no secret to anybody that has tried to buy a home lately. the thing is alex, most people think new york, boston, chicago, la, seattle, big cities that have spiking rates of rent and cost of housing. it is everywhere now. it is in mid sized cities, smaller towns. this is a policy that will

benefit a cross section of americans to make homeownership more affordable. and also, with her pledge to invest in incentives to create 3 million new housing units over the next four years. that can make a tremendous difference. that kind of supply and helping to bring the cost of housing down. and that resonates we specially the middle class in america. so it is very smart policy and very smart politics. i will also say just briefly on this, millennials last year in 2023 according to the national association of realtors became the largest block of home buyers. 38%. so this is going to be something that resonates with that younger voter from 25 years old to 43 years old. >> yeah, and it feels like when you talk about the inflationary problems that have bedeviled the biden harris administration, the housing crisis is like chief among them. people being able to afford a

home. the other piece of that is being able to afford putting food on the table. here, vice president harris is proposing a sort of, attacking price gouging as it stands. basically putting a ban, a federal ban on companies that seek to inflate the price of basic food items. now we know that trump tried his hand at addressing that concern yesterday by standing next to a table full of room temperature perishabling and didn't spend much time talking about why he was standing next to the perishables. i wonder what you think about this plan. the trump vance campaign has called this a soviet style priced control scheme that has been tried and failed by communist regimes throughout history. what do you make of it as both in terms of the policy and the politics of it? >> here trump and advance, this is a desperate attempt to try and smear this policy to misrepresent it. let's talk about what it is and

what it isn't. it is not telling grocery stores you can only charge x, y, and z. that is not what this is. what she has said, she will give authority to the ftc to go after grocery chains and these are a lot of them huge conglomerates that price gouge and have enormous profits. that is very different from saying you can only charge this much on this item. it will be an effective policy in sending a strong signal that price gouging will not be tolerated. this harris policy is about stopping the massive corporate greed. that's one of the reasons polling shows that it is actually very popular. this measure is popular with the middle class in this country because they recognize that corporate greed has played a role in boosting inflation

and we have to get that under control. >> yeah. i will say the biden harris administration has really tried to unrig the economy. great to have you on the program, julian castro. still to come, donald trump and jd vance's worship of a fictionalized past when america was great and women knew their place. may be leading them right smack into a brick wall with women voters. our own simone sanders townsend joins me with some lady talk this friday evening coming up next. next. ther money manager) you can't be that different. family values. since vance joined the ticket the values have started to come into focus. like when vance said he agreed that the whole purpose for post menopausal women is to raise grandchildren. those kinds of values. and new polling shows that americans, ones both with and without children are not super fans of mr. trump's running mate. a new washington post abc news poll shows vance's net favorability is negative 10 among both parents and those without children at home. his favorability among women is negative 8 an the number dropped lower among men to negative 12. joining me now is simone sanders townsend. cohost of the weekend. and former chief spokesperson to vice president family kamala harris. let's talk about the gender divide. does it surprise you jd vance saying everything he has about women doing worse among men than women and how do you make of that? >> you know to me i think that is just much more of a function

of the weird moniker being something that even men, even republican men are receptive to. and i was reading the full reports because i have nothing better to do. i'm a nerd. earlier this week, and in boston at a fund raising, governor walz explained weird was not a name calling thing for him but an observation. the numbers that jd vance specifically has with men in this country, and again polling is not predictive. it is indicative of where people are at a given time. and it is just a snapshot. but that is what it is responsive to. no one like to be weird, alex. >> yeah. i hear that. it is women who are fleeing en masse. and the key battleground state of pennsylvania where the trump campaign things the whole thing will be won or lost.

women are backing harris 54. can you talk a little more about what the sort of secret sauce may be for kamala harris among women? because we know that white women went for trump in previous election cycles. given those numbers i am assuming a lot of that physical support hit hard. 2020 and 2016, the numbers for the women of color, particularly black women and latino women. latino women, the numbers have trump just a little bit on the margins. but they drop off with democratic candidates. they have for the presidential candidates. every one of these elections. for vice president kamala harris, that number for women of color and women across the board could be very important. and the margins are absolutely going to matter here in this

election. when peink about pennsylvania and the suburbs i think they think specifically about white women in the suburbs. but the suburbs across the country especially the suburbs in pennsylvania outside of philadelphia for example, have become more diverse over the last 20 years. if you think of butler county, pennsylvania, the site of where joe biden launched his reelection campaign frankly with his speech, commemorating or marking january 6th, that is a diverse, more diverse suburb. it is black women. asian pacific islander women. and we went to the suburbs to talk to those women within the last month. and, they are paying attention to this election. they decided the issue of democracy. they liked vice president kamala harris. and this was before she was officially on the ticket as the top of the ticket. and they did not have a good thing to say about donald trump and his policies. i think these numbers are again

indicative of what people are just responding to and seeing themselves. i will note just a point of caution alex, my final point here is while yes, these numbers do look good, i think back to 2016 where there were a lot of folks polled not willing to tell the pollster what they really wanted to do when it came to election day. so we saw a lot of white women casting ballots for donald trump. i think you have focus groups. you have to talk to people. but also what is happening out there on the ground. and you cannot discount the issues of abortion and the issues of the economy. and when donald trump says he is going out there to give a speech about the economy and then gets up and says they wanted me to give a speech about the economy and i don't know why? it is kind of dismissive so what people are really feeling across the country. and women especially. they are paying attention to the messages whether they are positive or negative and it affects what they will do. >> what do you think about kamala harris leaning into

trump's attempt to i think diminish her by calling her kamala? is that the pro move? >> well look, i think, vice president harris in my experience with her, people have, i mean, it is calling her kamala. she has experienced people not understanding how to say her name right which i'm very struck by. in this country, we have figured out how to say benjamin netanyahu, leaders have figured out how to correct all of these cities and provinces within ukraine. and, volodymyr zelenskyy, but yet, we can't get kamala harris right. so there is something there. she has experienced it before. and the best tact for the vice president in this will be to not lean into the attacks. it is a distraction. to take her off her message. to take her off her message.
