10:02 am
here's a look at the convention floor at united center in chicago. we are going to give that to you right there. organizers say it will be a grand affair with president biden delivering the keynote address tomorrow, tuesday night highlights will include michelle and barack obama, the convention will, and it was vice president harris accepting the nomination, and here's part of a report. >> president biden, preparing to address his supporters as well as critics gathering in chicago this week, to formally pass the torch to vice president harris and and a more than half-century political career. biden aids telling nbc news the president will make a forceful case for the new harris/walz democratic ticket while touting the biden/harris record to draw contrast with former president trump who ate say the president will argue, still poses a threat to democracy. >> you know, if i didn't debate him he would still be running right now. but i believe, she will be easier to beat than him.
10:03 am
>> more on the dnc in a moment, donald trump meanwhile, spoke in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania yesterday and continued attacks on the vice president and called the dnc, a rigged convention. and a new post pull shows harris leading trumpet head-to- head presidential election matchup. here's how both sides are interpreting the numbers. >> i think there are a lot of polls that show her stagnating and leveling off. abc and washington post was a wildly inaccurate pollster in the summer of 2020. >> i think the momentum is building. i don't think we have reached even the top of where the momentum is going and we need to roll on through to november. >> so many reporters and analysts, so much ground to
10:04 am
cover, and they are already to break down the days developing story lines. we begin with nbc's aaron gilchrist. welcome, we have the vice president and governor walz, getting ready for the bus tour at this hour. who is the vice president trying to reach in pennsylvania? >> alex, the vice president and her running mate and their spouses are in the air right now, headed here to the pittsburgh area. they been to pennsylvania, the vice president has, several times this year and typically we talk about her visiting areas around philadelphia. this time she's coming to the pittsburgh area, to allegheny and beaver counties, to talk about this working-class population in the western part of the state. we know she is going to be making several stops while she's here through the afternoon today along with her running mate and their spouses. and they will focus their time obviously here in pittsburgh but also you mentioned in rochester, that's a little northwest of where we are right now. she will talk to voters in the area, supporters of the area, recognizing that allegheny county and beaver county have
10:05 am
some differences, beaver county or rather allegheny county is one that's been reliably blue in the last couple of election cycles, beaver county, though, is one that is a working-class, blue-collar community but it is one that voted for president trump in the last election in 2020 and in 2016 as well. and so when the vice president gets here, the mission that we understand from the campaign, is to talk about strong, union representation or support for unions in trying to strengthen unions and also to talk about job creation in this region as well, and an area that we know is a battleground area, inside a battleground state. i want you to hear what her campaign had to say earlier on msnbc today about why this part of pennsylvania, right now. >> this campaign is inclusive. we have to talk to people and we have a vision for this country that include people that live in these rural communities and in the small town and we have to communicate that when we don't, we see the argument to the republicans and their extreme agenda and that's what these voters believe.
10:06 am
>> reporter: and that's the best news that we will hear with the vice president speaks today. a few of the other stops that she will be making, would be more sort of rallying support that may already exist in terms of going to places where there may be some phone banking going on, maybe retail stops as well. this is on the road to chicago and the democratic national convention. this stop will happen today when she leaves the pittsburgh area, she will go to chicago and we expect to see the campaign rallying support in wisconsin on tuesday, alex, another key battleground state. >> i don't know what's going on, i'm looking at the crowd getting revved up. we will bring it to our viewers. i kind of thought maybe you could see the plane in the sky approaching but it doesn't appear to be so. anyway, we will keep watching it. thank you so much, and we will
10:07 am
go back there guys, when the vice president you know, arrest, so we will take you there. let's go to jake trailer, he is here at 30 rock. so jake, what are we hearing from donald trump ahead of the democratic convention? >> the spotlight is on the democratic national convention and from himself and often the -- also the campaign knows that and they have known that this is going to be a week that is heavily covered more so for the democrats. but if we know donald trump, we know that he is going to try to take a lot of the spotlight and in a few hours, the trump campaign put out a memo for what their week would look like essentially, trump is going to barn storm the state and hit a lot of key battleground states, north carolina, michigan, pennsylvania, nevada and notably, too, a lot of the
10:08 am
speeches will be specifically policy focused, they say, and that'll be around some of the top republican talking points. immigration, inflation, safety and security. notably, thursday, kind of the crescendo of the dnc whatever we see vice president harris accept the nomination and deliver a speech, we will see trump giving it emigration focused speech at the border. that's their attempt to have this split screen moment. as far as last my, donald trump said that he is entitled to personal attacks, we saw him take those out on vice president harris, going after he looks and called the democratic national convention a rigged convention, something he's been doing. take a listen to that. >> why does she go to the convention, it's a rigged convention, obviously, she got no votes, he had 14, you know, sleepy joe had 1400, 14 million votes, she had no votes. she failed. she was the first one out, she failed, >> so alex, a lot of those same personal attacks that we've been seeing from trump last night, calling the dnc a rigged convention, most partly what we will watch for this upcoming
10:09 am
week is we see the policy focused speech is, will he strict to -- pick to the script or veer into personal attacks like he's been known to? >> let's bring in jen psaki, former white house press secretary and a good friend to us. yeah, personal attacks, you know where i'm going here, because these attacks by trump on harris, jen, his inability to stay on message, last night, he was supposed to stick stick to economic issues and some call -- somehow he called a communist and a fascist. we keep hearing that the trump team will solidify and attack line. this seems worse than ever, the rambling, does anything stick? >> i mean, look, alex, watching some of these clips, and we talked about this a little bit
10:10 am
on my show, i mean, it makes him seem just repetitive and kind of sad and a little boring . and that's not who he wants to be, obviously, and so, that is the thing, if you are his team, you are watching and you are looking at the other side and thinking, wow, they have huge crowds, they are getting a lot of coverage, they have a lot of energy, that's not what you are seeing at these trump events, and not what you are seeing in reaction to his attacks, his old bag of tricks that he's gone back to that we've seen him do over and over again for the last decade. >> by the way at his rally yesterday, it wasn't filled to the rafters as they typically are, people were trickling out about a half hour or so into the speech, you know, we didn't see that for years ago, certainly not eight years ago. so let's talk about peter baker, who wrote about harris and her journey as vice president and how she quietly
10:11 am
influenced policy from the supreme court pick to student debt relief, voting rights, abortion rights, the former white house chief of staff said, quote, i don't think we did a good enough job of selling her. you were in the administration early on, did understand -- did insiders underestimate her? >> i think everybody underestimated her and i say that, you know, looking back at 2019, when people were thinking, okay, we saw the 2019 campaign, is it going to be the same, and it's not. she's a better candidate, she's a stronger message person, she's more fearless out there, she's the same person, of course, but she's gotten even better on the stump. and i think a lot of people underestimated her. and now we are really seeing the fearlessness, the decisiveness, that was probably who she was all along. >> this new poll from the
10:12 am
washington post, it has harris leading trump 49% to 45%. look, it's still close but it's definitely an improvement from july when biden was tied with trump. how much of a bump do you expect after the convention? >> there's usually a convention bump, it's hard to know they just get a bump from all of the excitement from the last couple of weeks? i'm less concerned if i was watching the national polls, more of the state ones. have put north carolina back in play, they are ahead in arizona, nevada is back in place. so the blue wall states are very important and pennsylvania, michigan, but expanding and putting some of these states back in play means there's a paths to 270 so the state polls is what i would be
10:13 am
paying attention to. >> the question also is now, is this momentum going to last? is it enough because one strategist told the washington post that she has had the best four weeks in modern american political history and we are still basically in a tied race. do you think the country is so polarized, jen, that we will not see a huge lead going into election day? >> there's never going to be a reagan and mondale election again probably because the country is so divided. and i think everybody just has to be clear eyed about that. that things have felt good, they have felt joyful for democrats. it is going to be a nailbiter, a tough and close race, and there's and unpredictability in politics, so you have to follow the story as it goes. so the convention is a big moment for harris and walz because it is kind of their
10:14 am
unfiltered opportunity to speak directly to the public. the supporters, people on the fence, things like that but there's still some time to go after that, and everybody out there, they've got to stay focused on the fact that it is going to be a close race, no doubt about it. >> there's a question here i promise but really, you put the west wing at the end of the show. i'm up in my office, i'm watching, i'm crying along with martin sheen. >> i was crying. >> i'm running to get to the studio, can you give me a heads up so i can come down earlier? >> you know, it was so amazing because you watch the, we played this clip and it's so related to what we are all about to watch tomorrow night, which is president biden giving one of the last big speeches and there's a scene in the last season of the west wing for any super fans out there, where martin sheen, president bartlett is walking by his chief of staff, he had never seen the scene before. and leo mcgarry of course, died in real life, john spencer, a
10:15 am
true friend of all of the cast, they were holding hands, emotional as they were watching it. i was getting emotional watching them, thinking about jill biden, so we had some tissues on the set at the end of the show, no question. >> but to that point, what do you think joe biden is preparing for tomorrow night? is it going to be bittersweet for him? you've got to be happy that the democratic party has coalesced around kamala harris, but you know the guy. what do you think that he is thinking? >> well, i think he is somebody who has lived his life in public service. he's been in elected office since he was in his late 20s, he's been in public service through the worst things that could happen to any human being, you know, the loss of his first wife, the loss of his daughter, the loss of his son, and he has still fought through and found a way to fight for
10:16 am
good, to fight for working people out there. that's remarkable. i'm sure that's all on his mind, public service and how central it's been to him. it's going to be an emotional night i think, for the whole biden universe, anyone who's ever worked for him, recently, currently, 20 to 30 years ago, there's a lot of people i hear who are flying and who will be there to celebrate him. celebrate after, but for him, i think he knows, this is a huge speech. it's an opportunity for him to talk about what he's done, but also pass the baton to who he hopes will be his successor in the oval office. >> i think it's pretty fitting, we've heard throughout the last couple of days, there will be tributes to him, his legacy and all of that. we are looking forward to it. i love your show, every time, today it was particularly special today. again, put it up earlier or let me know when you have the cast of west wing. i will watch from the studio instead. all the scenes from chicago inside and outside, which you may not have been told to

expect. we are back in 90 seconds. take a look at that, everybody, it looks like it's raining a little bit, the vice president will be deplaning with governor walz, we are expecting them to stay at the pittsburgh airport. we don't know if they will make statements at all but we do know they will hit about 25 miles away to rochester and we will be right back in 90 seconds. 90 seconds. and it could wake at any time. think you're not at risk for shingles? it's time to wake up. because shingles could wake up in you. if you're over 50, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about shingles prevention.

right now, vice president harris, arriving in pittsburgh along with minnesota governor tim walls, they are beginning their bus tour through the western part of pennsylvania and will make some stops today in both pittsburgh and rochester and we will keep a close eye on the airplane and all those gathered at the hangar. smart final preparations in chicago today for the democratic national convention, security being expanded as major protests are expected outside the convention throughout the event. we've got reporters in chicago covering the latest in we begin with mora barrett who's in humbled park, chicago, people are starting to gather. how big does this protest look like it is shaping up to be and what is the message? >> alex, with so many top democratic leaders coming into town today, activists are taking full advantage of getting to issue their message to them, today the poor people's army will be gathering
10:20 am
and advising their plan ahead of their push to bring awareness to the homelessness issue across the country but there are a plethora of groups coming in from all around illinois, across the country to make their message known to democratic leaders whether been about probe palestinian rights, the migrant crisis, lgbtq writes, we will see a lot of different groups come together, as many as 20,000 people expected at times. there's been a lot of back and forth between the city and permit issuing around where these protesters can organize because that was a very limited issue when it comes to the security perimeter around the united center. we are about two miles north of the perimeter and that's where this group will be coming in buses and coming across the country to then march on the area where the dnc will convene. this is something the city has been considering for months, mayor johnson gave an update this morning at a press conference, talking about how reasserting is based on the preparations. >> it's because we have the full force of government that
10:21 am
has worked collaboratively to make sure that the dnc is safe and vibrant and look, we are really good at this. in fact, here's the part that is fascinating to me. this is not the largest events that we are hosting. we posted larger scale events. >> reporter: i should note that the mayor is a former union organizer himself. he is someone who has always advocated for protesters to have access to exercise their rights. the chicago pd has ramped up, bringing in police officers from milwaukee and across the state to be up-to-date with their training methods in case anything does happen. there are strict rules in place, you have to have a permit to be able to protest in the sanctioned off areas and once you are in those areas. and there's a lot of plans in place and everything will be, the biggest protest we plan to see is tomorrow afternoon, in

the area. we are going to go inside, joining me from chicago, mike manley who i understand has newly reportable news? what is it that you can tell us, my friend? >> we've been talking about was going to be an emotional night tomorrow night, monday, when president biden delivers his address to the convention, part of a day of tributes to the outgoing president. tuesday the committee is calling a celebratory roll call of the states to make harris and walls the nominees. it we will start in the delaware delegation. they will be the first state to cast votes for harris and walz.
10:23 am
vice president harris, downstate, california, in 2020, they had to completely adopt the way the convention operated including the rollcall vote. they did it virtually and had elements mall across the country. they are going to adapt some of that and some elements will be in person and remember the column or a guy from rhode island, they will do remote aspects like that as well. this is part of the careful planning from the convention organizers including jamie harrison who talked about the ways that this will be benefiting up and down the ballot, take a listen. >> so our staff is working closely together and i don't think that has happened historically in the past in the democratic ecosystem. so we are all aligned we are all on the same page, we are information, we are focused like a laser on notches winning the white house back, but making sure that the house, the senate, we pick up gubernatorial elections, we flip some state house seats, and that is all in alignment.
10:24 am
>> i always think it's fun and one of the dynamics of the convention is figuring out which states are aware and you've got to get a sense of the importance of the map, delaware, the home state advantage of the outgoing president, ahead of that you got pennsylvania, probably the most critical of the battleground states where harris is about to begin her bus tour for the day. >> course california at the end, with its many, many electoral votes. the sticking point in the mideast cease-fire negotiations, that's next. when a power outage occurs, your generac home standby generator automatically powers up, using your home's existing natural gas or propane, so your life goes on without disruption.

president and governor walz to exit the plane shortly. it seems like it's a rainy day there in pittsburgh, so they may be gathering things, umbrellas and the like before they do send the steps. to the awaiting, excited crowd of about 150. we will keep an eye on everything happening there but there's also breaking news to report, the secretary of state, is in israel today, to push for the finalization of a gaza cease-fire deal, this, after president biden said he was optimistic that a proposal put forth during last week's talks will close the remaining gaps between israel and hamas. blinken will be meeting with benjamin netanyahu on monday to seal the deal and head off a potential regional conflict with iran. before we bring in our good friend admiral james, i want to let all of you know that kamala harris has gotten off the plane as has governor walz and they've gone presumably right there into the beast, that would
10:30 am
be that car. you see it at the base of the steps. so they will not be addressing those that have gathered in the hangar, that was not on the agenda, to be honest but you never know. and we know, this being a bus tour, they will have some flexibility to stop in places on their way to rochester. now we bring in the admirable -- admiral james. there are mixed messages coming out of last week's summit, you have president biden and fellow mediators who say they are cautiously optimistic, we've been told this several times before that negotiators were close to a deal, only to have it fall apart at the last minute and contrary to what mediators are saying, hamas, is not at the talks and has described progress on a deal as
10:31 am
an illusion. do you expect a cease-fire deal will be reached by both sides this week? >> i can answer that in three words, i don't know. neither does anybody else, including tony blinken, who a lot to get the ultimate frequent flyer miles for the effort he's put into this alongside national security adviser jake sullivan, secretary of defense, lloyd austin, everyone is pushing this so hard right now. if you pinned me down, i would say, there's a slightly better than even chance that we might see a deal over the next week or two. three things tell me that. one, iran has thus far, not responded to the assassination
10:32 am
of one of the leaders of hamas, number 2, hezbollah, likewise, has not responded over the last couple of weeks since one of their leaders was killed in beirut. so you've got, what looks like some restraint on that side, and my third reason for thinking, we are probably better than even, is just how much the u.s., how much they want this deal, not just for the humanitarian reason, that's critical, not just to get hostages home, that is vital, but they want this deal, because it avoids, as you said in your read, the potential for this thing to expand into a wider war, right in the middle of the presidential campaign. so there's a lot of powerful forces moving towards a deal. >> okay. standby just a moment, we will go back everybody, to pittsburgh. well there you have it, they have appeared to give a wave to everybody. we were getting information that gotten into the beast and it looks like that was advisors and people helping along the way but about 150 or so have gathered to greet the
10:33 am
presidential nominee and her running mate, the governor of minnesota, so, we are watching all of this, it's an exuberant crowd. i think that is an underestimate, hundred 50. it looks like it's bigger than that. more like 300, perhaps, if not more, so again, it'll be an exuberant day for them, as they are met with enthusiastic crowds as expected across western pennsylvania. they will go 25 miles north of pittsburgh to the town of rochester. . this is a place as of 2020, we know the population was about 3500 people, so definitely a smaller town. somewhat of a bedroom community. a very middle-class area. we will keep watching that and take you guys on the bus tour as well. let's go to, you i understand
10:34 am
you are waiting for the arrival which will be a little bit of a wait as we are still in the airport hangar in pittsburgh. talk about what is expected there. what do you know about the area in rochester? >> alex, rochester is a unique county here. it is one that historically is conservative, donald trump won this county in 2016 and 2020 was still the harris/walz campaign is optimistic about their chances here largely because of the midterm elections, governor shapiro was able to win this area over the trump endorsed candidate and john federman, he lost by a margin that was much more narrow than what joe biden lost by in his 2020 election. they are trying to speak to
10:35 am
voters everywhere, they come to historically conservative districts, and he is here really, to assist vice president harris in speaking to these voters, as the campaign has been emphasizing their middle-class background, trying to connect to voters on the roots. i want you to listen, we spoke to voters earlier today at the airport arrival and what we are hearing is a lot of excitement, even in allegheny county. the campaign is still going, also, having them tell their friends to turn out. this is all about turnout and they hope if they continue to come here and engage with these voters, they will be willing to do just that. >> my message for voters? what, if you want democracy to be protected, if you want social security to be protected, if you want medicare and medicaid to be protected,
10:36 am
you've got to vote for harris and walz. it's a rally, we are getting excited for the election. there's only like 78 days left or something like that, so just really fired up to be here. hopeful, and energized for the coming election. >> reporter: just like you mentioned, the bus tour will come here to rochester, she's expected to visit a campaign field office and a canvassing site. we will be monitoring all of the stops and keep you updated. >> i thank you for doing that but let me ask you, how is the weather there? it looked like it was raining and pittsburgh just a few moments ago. >> reporter: it was raining here as well. i've been told that because of a river situation, it may rain in some areas and not as much in others but 10 to 15 minutes ago we saw heavy rain but it looks at least for now, to be calming down a bit.
10:37 am
>> let me ask you about timing, we know air force to landed just under 30 minutes ago, they are supposed to be there where you are about to: 45, that's in about an hour and 10 minutes. have you gotten any updates that they will be running late? look, they are greeting a lot of people right now. >> reporter: they're going to take the time to shake the hand, this is the purpose of the trip, it's to engage with voters on the one on one level. they did started -- start a little late. we know it's about a 40 minute drive from pittsburgh and if they keep to schedule, it's possible they will still hit rochester at some point within the 2:00 p.m. hour. >> it me a sense of how many people have gathered here. you said they will be at an area office for the campaign. i imagine the office staff is there but there's got to be others who have gathered? >> yeah, the campaign tells me they really want this to be smaller crowds. we saw the rallies during the
10:38 am
battleground tour, thousands of people. this is meant to be a contrast. there will be some volunteers, some voters in the area and really there's an opportunity to shake hands and take photos and have that one on one moment with the two principal candidates here. >> thank you very much. we appreciate it. they will be getting some frequent driver miles, that's for sure, we will talk further about what to expect from the harris/walz bus tour. we are going to take a quick break, everyone, we will be right back. nalized e. made possible by t-mobile for business. with t-mobile's reliable 5g business internet. employees get the information they need instantly. this is how business goes further with t-mobile for business. getting a fresh deal at subway has never been easier. just buy any footlong in the app, get another free. the only hard part is, telling travis he doesn't get the second footlong.

staying with us. i know your time is precious. i will ask you a couple more questions, you know how live tv is. with regard to iran, and the way that it once to show strength but not necessarily risk starting a war, what options does it have to do that? >> they will use their proxies, and they are already doing that. what i mean by proxies is hezbollah, to the north, with missiles, hamas of course, already engaged in brutal fighting, but don't forget, alex, they have control of the rebels down in yemen, they shut down half of the shipping coming through the suez canal, and finally, we tend to forget about this but there are

uranium proxy groups operating in syria and iraq that can attack american forces, so, that, i think is where the eventual uranian reply will be. as we were saying before the nice coverage of the vice president, by the way, that is a very enthusiastic looking crowd. my parents lived in western pennsylvania for a number of years, that's a fired up crowd for the vp. and so, i think the iranians don't want a wider war. they will use their proxies and that's why i think there is let's help, a better than even chance for a cease-fire in the next week or so. >> kyiv, their surprise push, it has shocked moscow and exposed the vulnerabilities. it's the largest attack on russia since world war ii. how might this gave ukraine the
10:45 am
upper hand in the war and what it complicate efforts if ukraine starts using those weapons in russian territory? >> they are already using some of our weapon systems, armored personnel carriers, ammunition, high mars rockets, the key will be whether the u.s. will allow the ukrainians to use f-16 fighters and the long-range missiles. i think that's a real possibility at this point. look, what the ukrainians have done is shaken the confidence of the russian people and they've sent a strong signal to the u.s. and the europeans and the other democracies that, give us the tools, we can do the job. and they are showing the ability conduct real, combined arms military operations, fancy term, all it means is putting together air, missiles, troops

about to give you video confirmation of them getting on the bus, there they are. and again, we will call them the fab four because it's a really fabulous group, they are leaving the democratic ticket and spouses as well as the second gentlemen turns to give a farewell wave. they left that exuberant crowd and they are on their way, about 40 minutes or so, to get to rochester, not this place, that's tomorrow, we are hours from the official start of the democratic national convention and giving you a live look inside the venue as the drama is building to thursday when vice president harris will deliver her remarks accepting the nomination. meanwhile, republican senator graham today with advice for former president trump as the candidate levels personal attacks against the vice president. >> president trump can win this election. his policies are good for america and if you have a policy debate for president, he wins. donald trump the profligate tour , the showman, may not win this election. looking for president trump to show up in the last 80 days, to define what he will do for our country. >> with me now, don calloway and host of the caucus room podcast and ceo of pine street strategies along with republican strategist susan percy. so glad to have you with us. is there another trump then trumped the provocateur?
10:50 am
is there any point even asking, can he change? >> this is who he's always been. you know, every non-substantive jig always comes to an end, unfortunately, for the country and real people who suffered under this trump regime, people died people suffered, while he held a death grip on the republican party but there's no other trump and there never has been. i go back to 2010, when i saw a lot of the worst elements that trump represents, really being germinated in the form of a t party but the republican party embraced that because those people were mauer and pliant -- were more inclined to vote with the letter are. but there is no other trump. this is the act, this is the thing, and lindsey graham is a savvy politician and what we
10:51 am
heard is him recognizing that this era is coming to an end but there's no way for trump to renew himself with some type of substantive wisdom in the next 79 days. that does not mean that republicans cannot win and democrats still have extraordinary outreach and registration, and making sure that people are registered to vote, but there will be no pivot to substance that they are suddenly asking for after 10 years. >> there's this thought that this honeymoon period for harris and eventually trump and republicans will settle on attack lines that focus on the issues. it does not seem to be happening and after the convention, would there be time for republicans to try to define the vice president the way they want to? >> there certainly will be time after the convention. although, the first votes are cast in mid to late september via early voting, the american public will start really tuning
10:52 am
in at that point. the republicans have lost an important and critical opportunity to start defining vice president harris however, they're going to get a lot more bites at the apple if we think about what is happened in the last month in american politics, it's not hard to imagine the month of september being equally topsy-turvy, and the other thing that is so important to remember is that we are a divided nation, i don't care who the republican and democrat were on the top of the ticket, for the most part, this is going to be a close race. it's going to come down to a few states and maybe less than 100,000 voters. so i expect trump's team will start to get on a message. but lindsey graham is so interesting to watch. i have to go back to that for a minute. i mean, he's willing to kind of go after trump a little bit on
10:53 am
his campaigning, but more importantly, in that interview, he had such kind words for joe biden, which will surely get the president, former president very angry. >> he doesn't want that. >> david, bonnie hilliard told us that the trump rally arena was not filled to the rafters and about 30 minutes into the speech the crowd started trickling out. he also forgot which state he was in. >> the guy is waiting with his family for 3 1/2, four days, they have a tent and the tent is set up, they have hundreds of them, and they wait and i walk in, speak for 15 minutes and leave, i don't know, would that be okay, north carolina? >> yeah, he was in pennsylvania. does this point to the general sense that trump's ramblings are wearing on his supporters? >> oh, absolutely, look, trump is a hero in his own mind, he always will be but what we are
10:54 am
seeing from these events is he's more like the aging rock star, whose fans have kind of faded away so it's more like a reunion tour. it just doesn't quite have the spark it had in 2016, and the lack of enthusiasm is there as well and he's not helping himself, lindsey graham's comments while very serious, to have lindsey graham of all people the senator from south carolina, despite all of this flip-flopping call out donald trump as being a candidate off message and likely to lose the vice president harris, and he's right, lindsey graham is right. donald trump will likely lose to vice president harris as we stand here today. what the trump camp needs to do, is not throw the whole kitchen sink out, which is what they've been trying to do that. they missed their opportunity to define her, now they're throwing everything, nothing is sticking. i think the only thing that dramatically changes the race is an intervening international or domestic event, a harris
10:55 am
stumble or the only offensive tool that trump could really do is a willie horton style ad, something that is so specific, not general, so specific, that they are trying to tie to vice president harris that it sticks. right now trump is a candidate and capable of doing that. and at this point, it's the vice presidents race. >> certainly, don, did you want to say something, apparently you're chomping at the bit? >> and i tried to make this point last week and articulately. it cannot happen short of some catastrophic event. the reason why is the campaign and the administration are more than just a candidate. a campaign is made up of people who have been doing this for the past 10 to 15 years and the people on the republican side who have been doing this, working campaigns all across the country, they don't know how to run substantive campaigns. and that is because they came
10:56 am
up in the mold of their spiritual leader, trump, who knows nothing of this other than to obfuscate and call names. so you have people filling these campaigns, doing the work who don't know how to do this. and that is because they are created in the mold of trump and that's a 10 year project, to create people to know how to do this and democrats have done that over generations. republicans have not because they ceded their party and their operative capacity to him and people like him. >> you mean bringing back corey lewandowski is not going to change all of that for you? >> he is not qualified to carry my briefcase. >> cool. let's move on. susan, there's a new poll from the washington post and it shows harris with a slight lead nationally, 49 to 45 in a head- to-head matchup, what do you make of this and how much, if at all, do you think it is going to increase after the convention and i ask because she is enjoying such strong headwinds right now. they've said this never
10:57 am
happened in modern political history, this kind of four weeks of you know, tailwinds, can she rise above, even what she is enjoying right now, to some degree? >> she can, but it won't be more than a point or two. we know donald trump, lives in the area of anywhere from 43% to 49% in any given day. the fact that we see harris really bumping up, is really more of a reflection i believe, of enthusiasm about, you know, for the double haters, they finally have someone to move towards who is not joe biden with the independent voters who may have wanted to sit it out, we also see a lot more people getting engaged, let's not
10:58 am
forget we have people who worked eligible to vote for years ago, that were turned off by seeing the two options of biden and trump, so they are going there. again, we are so divided. i do not expect to see her jump up that high, given the environment. >> david, what is your parting thought? >> vice president harris is in position to win the race. and i think the popular vote, she's largely securing day by day, the electoral college will still come in and whatever term we call the persuadable's, they are more substantive and less reflexive in their partisan loyalty and those are the loyalty people that are looking at harris saying i like the direction that she is willing to take. >> good final thought. great thoughts from all of you t as always. so what happens when a ferris will catches fire? you are about to find out, next.
