moment. you are looking at the bravest to ever wear the country's uniform. >> today we recognize seven men as being among the bravest of the brave, each of them distinguished themselves with extraordinary power. in the famous words, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. >> the highest military honor one can receive is the medal of honor bestowed by the commander in chief to individuals who exhibit extraordinary bravery in combat, and in some cases, make the ultimate sacrifice. this highest honor for valor have been awarded to just 3519 recipients out of the more than 41 million individuals who havel served our country. among those remarkable recipients are desmond doss, a world war ii army medic who put himself in danger to help wounded soldiers. he rescued 75 men trapped at the top of the cliff.

a staff sergeant who saved several soldiers when they went under attack for machine gun and sniper fire in afghanistan. ronald shurer died as a result d of his efforts. >> at the age of 18, private milton olive risked his life and saved others by falling on a grenade. dr. mary edwards walker is the only female recipient of the medal of honor. commander howard gilmore was killed in action in world war ii when his submarine was under attack. when he realized he could not get back into the vessel in time for it to escape, he yelled, hanker down, and sacrificed himself. there is a face familiar to all of you, retired u.s. army colonel jack jacobs, during the vietnam war with impaired vision from injuries, he pulled 14 men to safety while he was under enemy fire. through all of that, with that

fresh in your mind, listen to what donald trump, republican nominee for president, said out loud with cameras rolling last night at a fundraiser at his golf club. he was speaking about awarding miriam made us, the widow of gop mega donor sheldon adelson, with the nation's highest civilian honor. i have to say, miriam, i watched sheldon sitting so proud in the white house will we gave miriam the presidential medal of freedom. that is the highest award you can get as a civilian, it is equivalent to the congressional medal of honor but much better because everyone gets the congressional medal of honor mac, that is soldiers that are either in very bad shape because they were hit by so many bullet so many times or they're dead. she gets in and she is a healthy, beautiful woman. >> again, not a gotcha moment

that they caught on secret hitting camera, public statements, disgusting and shameful display from anyone, especially someone who wants to be the country's commander-in- chief, a flagrant display of disrespect to the men and women who put their lives on the line and commit heroic acts on the battlefield to protect all of us and our way of life. a friend of the show and retired marine corps lieutenant colonel amy mcgrath put it this way, no, the medal of honor is not the equivalent of the medal trump gave to rush limbaugh and jim jordan. no, they're not rated equal. not even close. every single member of the military knows the significance of the medal of honor. every single commander in chief in the history of america knows the significance of this medal,i except donald trump. it is galling. as galling as the comments are, at this point, they are not surprising, given the ex-

president's long history of disparaging veterans, publicly and privately. his chief of staff confirmed he called those who fought for our country suckers and losers and questioned why some of them served in the united states military. he even criticized former senator john mccain, a prisoner of war, for being captured. this is who donald trump really is. this is where we start the hour with some of our favorite military experts and fries. medal of honor recipient and retired arnie colonel jack jacobs is with us, along with retired four-star general and msnbc with terry and was barry mccaffrey and lieutenant colonel and founder of democratic majority action- packed, the effort mentioned amy mcgrath and the host of the independent americans podcast, ceo at the independent veterans of america and founder of iraq

in afghanistan members is here. i can't believe we have to have this conversation but here we are. i guess when i want to ask you, do your peers, do the men and women, do veterans, do men and women in the military understand that donald trump, not only doesn't respect them but really does see them as suckers and losers? >> well, many do but many don't pick up despite the fact that donald trump is one of the most inept public speakers, i have her, i am an old person, so i have been around a great deal, i have been around a great number public speakers, you often don't know what it is he is saying not given he knows it is what he is saying, very digressive and so on and drifting off and castigating people who have served and sacrificed and can tell the difference between the medal of freedom and the medal of honor. you have to remember, this is

the man, who, as you say, denigrated people who served and sacrificed so that he can enjoy the freedom that he enjoys now. if it weren't for these people, he would not be in the position where he could enjoy, all of us would not be in the position where we can enjoy freedom. the other thing to keep in mind, this is also the guy who managed to avoid serving because of his really deleterious heel spur on his te foot. all that notwithstanding, the problem in this regard is that donald trump does not understand some of the things, which in history have described how we get to a position where we can have freedom, that is to the service and sacrifice of others, a reminder of the observation of the hill and all the first century hebrew scholar who wrote, if i am only for myself, what am i? if you

are only for yourself, you are probably donald trump. or the observation, almost as pointedly, of john stuart mill, who wrote about war. trump ought to light him because he was something of an individualist and libertarian who wrote, a man for whom nothing is more important than his own safety is a miserable creature. who is made free and free by better men than he. nicole? >> i love that. i will do two things, i will show viewers some of the video, um, of when president nixon awarded you this medal and share more of the history of

your service. your battalion came under intense, heavy machine gun and mortar fire, the battalion, as we said before, even though you were wounded by mortar fragments, you assumed command of the allied company, ordered the withdrawal from the exposed position, established a defensive perimeter and despite your own wounds, profuse bleeding from head wounds, which impaired your vision, disregard for your own safety, returned intense fire to evacuate a seriously wounded advisor to the safety of a wooded area, where you administered life-saving first- aid. you then return through heavy automatic weapons fire to help u the wounded company commander. you made repeated trips over the fire swept rice patties evacuating the wounded and their weapons. your actions save the lives of the u.s. advisor and 13 wounded soldiers. one of the many reasons we miss him, we don't read that all time we ask for your advice. but some of what i worry about many things, when i worry about donald trump, but i worry about the erasure of selflessness. i worry that when donald trump

normalizes and what he has discussed veterans and those who lose their lives, one of the most harrowing things i think i read during his whole presidency is that he still with general kelly and did not understand, um, basically his pride in having those who sacrificed and who lost his life serving the country. he sees people who put something other than themselves above self-interest as suckers and losers. that is his word. what do we do, as a country, with the fact he has been elevated a third time? an entire political party elevated somebody who sees service that way? >> well, we all have to do a much better job of educating, not only this generation, the people who are voting now, but future generations about the importance of democracy and hown costly it is to get it and to keep it.

we have, listen, you're looking at somebody who believes in universal service. i think anybody who is lucky enough to live in a free country owes it simply in the form of service. it is only until we have a system in which everybody has to make a contribution to freedom that we will value those things and therefore, reject those who think that people who serve and sacrifice are losers. those of us who served in combat, general mccaffrey and everybody else, everybody who has been in uniform, particularly those who served in combat, understand how important it is we take care of each other. that is how we defeat the enemy and we come home and we preserve freedom. unless we can educate future generations about the importance of doing that, that is the root of freedom, we will always be at risk in this situation, we will be at risk from demagogues who try to

negate the efforts of those who made this country great and who will keep it great. it is education, that is the at only way we can reach into the future. we have to do a much better job of educating future generations, nicole. >> general mccaffrey, you, too, may be mad at me at the end of this but i will do it. you received three purple heart medals for injuries sustained during your service in the vietnam war, two silver stars and two distinguished service crosses, the highest army award for valor. and, i guess, part of the reason i want to remind all of our viewers of your contributions to our country is because i truly find it terrifying that someone has been elevated by the voters, again, of one of the two parties, who, again, would

redefine heroism and patriotism and service to mean that sheldon a listen's wife is the same as you and colonel jack. i find that offensive to the point of being disoriented by it as an american. >> yeah. by the way, one other story about jack jacobs is, not only a medal of honor recipient but he insisted on going back to vietnam and into the war, the army would like to keep her a few living medal of honor recipients alive. when he got back there, his helicopter was shot down, he was darn near killed rejoining his unit. it is an interesting tort -- sort of record. the medal of freedom's distinguish glorious award to recognize science, medicine, athletes, artists, musicians.

it is a terrific award and the f recipient that trump is talking about is a distinguished israeli physician who has an aspect to her bio she is worth $28 billion. she finds trump . we have to put that aside. at the end of the day, mr. trump, and that sort of incoherent talk, it is hard to sort out what he was really saying, um, is someone who has no understanding of public service. it's just foreign to his idea. at one point, to howard stern in a radio interview, that he deserve the medal of honor for not getting an std during vietnam. there is a comical dissolute aspect to the man that really a shocking, as you pointed out. >> general, you tweeted this,

it is impossible to believe that trump is a presidential candidate can send the singer, disoriented thinking, fifth- grade stuff. um, yes, and there is such a long line now of insults for the men and women of the military not going to the cemetery in paris, not wanting wounded veterans to be seen at ceremonies because, quote, nobody wants to see that. the losers and suckers, the insults for john mccain, the insults for george bush, i mean, at what point do we really settle into and understand he has disdain for the men and women of the military? >> you know, if the world is turned upside down, it is hard to follow up. senator john kelly, four-star, reenlisted marine, staff sergeant in the marine corps, combat veteran, lohis son, a

young marine tenant -- lieutenant in afghanistan. he is the one that stepped forward and said publicly, look, this guy didn't want to go to the cemetery in europe, nor in arlington. what would their motivation be to sacrifice their life for this country? we have to believe that is actually what trump said and that is what he believes and thinks. in my judgment, it makes him unqualified to be the president of the united states. i think a lot of veterans, as jack pointed out, are supporting trump . they are blocking out this message for a variety of reasons, which the et democratic party had better figure out why that is. on the face of it, he is incoherent, he is unqualified, he is ignorant. this is childish stuff. that is who is running for president for the republican

almost scrambles the circuits. i wonder from your view, from your courage, from your service from your active role in our politics, what the appropriate sort of response is to someone who sees the world and sees service in our military that way. >> well, first of all, when i heard about it last night, i mean, i was shocked, just the same way, you know, anybody watching that would be shocked, even after all of these years of watching trump i was shocked . >> yeah. >> under no, in no planet is it okay to say that a medal that you gave to your rich donor is better than or even the same as the medal of honor. i think, you know, it just shows this total lack of understanding of what it means to be commander-in-chief, a total lack of understanding of the culture of the united states military, a culture of the greatest fighting force that has ever been around on this planet.

and -- and i think about it as, donald trump is not even fit to be in the room with colonel jacobs. >> you know, amy, we have talked a lot about how impactful chairman millie would be, secretary matus would be, and i have been unsparing in my enthusiasm for them to step into the public arena. i heard this comment yesterday and died, i really have a different layer of understanding about how painful it must have been to serve someone who wanted his generals and he, make no mistake, he

did not view them as american heroes, the way the public to, the way most people do, he view them as my generals. general kelly was his gentle. in trump's mind, was subservient to him, not the chain of command, the way someone who worked at it one of his clubs was, that is how trump saw men and women, there were not many women at that high level but amy, i wonder if it is just too painful to sort of relive what it was like to work for someone who wanted his generals to be more like the germans and when general kelly pressed him about which germans, it was clear he meant nazis, what it was like for him to denigrate general kelly's son's service, who paid the ultimate price for this country. i wonder if this comment yesterday deepens his reasoning on why some of these men don't want to wade into our politics. >> i think some have, you know, general kelly, as was brought up earlier has said, look, donald trump said these things. i do think that some have come out. what i wish for, you know, some of the others to come forward a

little bit more, yeah, i would. i can't speak to the reasons why they haven't but a number of people have. i do believe that, you know, we should listen to them. we should continue to talk about this because it is important. it is important for our country. how can we have a commander in chief who fundamentally does not understand the nation's highest honor and the sacrifices and what it all means. it is not an honor, as trump said, given to people who have been shot or injured. yes, there are some who have been injured and shot but, you know, earning the medal, it is

a medal for bravery. it is a medal for, you know, when you jump on a grenade to help your buddies to save their lives. it is a medal, as you are a pilot going back, you are taking your machine back into battle where it can be shot down and killed in order to save someone else. that is what this medal is about. donald trump has no clue about that or he never would have made these comments. >> paul, it is also important to view it as a continuum. his affinity for vladimir putin and kim jong noon and victor were bond is his disdain for military military service. if you love our adversaries and enemies, you don't understand that american men and women, generations of them, paid with their lives for us to live a totally different way of life here in a free democracy. just talk about with these comments reveal for you, if anything. >> this is eternal trump is, you know? he has been this guy from the beginning. he can't change who he is and he is doubling down on it over and over again. he doubles down on it over and over again and i am honored to be on the panel with these heroes. everyone should read colonel

jack jacobs' citation. i would tell donald trump to read it but it would not matter. it is a giant teachable moment, that is the upside. now younger people will understand what the medal of honor means, what freedom means and what leadership means. what leadership means is sacrifice. that is what donald trump is unwilling to do. that is why everybody, all our enemies are celebrating him when we see a former commander- in-chief attack the military. he has done it over and over again in so many ways. even if it is not malicious or an attempt to undermine the government, it is sloppy and unacceptable and weird. i think it is really now beyond being just about trump. we know who he is. the question is for the americans who are on the fence, this is not just about him. it is about you. are you okay with a guy being

adds, is simply potent argument and one evidently gaining steam against those who want to otherwise won't vote for democratic nominee. joining us now is the mayor of mesa, arizona, john giles and senior advisor to mike pence, republicans for harris, our old friend, olivia troye is here. you gave a tremendous speech, i played it yesterday. i was happy to get to play it again today on the occasion of you being here. it is another original thought, if you had said something about john mccain at a trump rally, people would not have clapped and applauded. that, having had the privilege of working for him, made me emotional. to see that the pro-democracy movement and to give credit to the democratic coalition for leading folks like us into it, you had an incredibly enthusiastic reception there. tell us what it has been like

to be this messenger. >> well, i am a big fan of senator mccain, as well. i worked for him as an intern when i was in law school when he was congressman john mccain. he was very kind to me. i have been married 10 years. the first six or seven years, you know, five or six years of that, i got to work with senator mccain, as well. it is painful to see the way that he was treated by the republican party now, it is shameful. that is part of what motivates me to speak up, you know? i am, i generally try to avoid partisan fights. it is not necessarily productive to my goal of being a good mayor. occasionally, you have to wade into these waters and defending the name of john mccain is a cause i am anxious to be

involved in. >> i just, i love the spontaneous applause. you didn't even stop for the applause, it just erupted. i want to ask you what, what conversations you are having, not in front of thousands and thousands of people, what are your sort of private persuasion messages to republicans? >> well, there have been a lot of them. i was stopped yesterday in the gym by a couple of young men who had concerns. they were, you know, watching a lot of fox news. they were telling me they could never afford to buy a house now. what am i thinking? why am i becoming a democrat? and there is, you know, multiply that by thousands, you know, all over the country. it is easy sometimes to forget that this country remains very evenly divided. there are a lot of folks that are misinformed and are, you know, i think it is important that vice president harris continues to run like she is because of underestimating donald trump is the way we do to her own peril. we do need to engage in the gym, grocery store line, churches, everywhere and become the conservative

propaganda out there preaching that vice president harris is an existential threat to our country. we need to get good information out to people and, again, run like we are behind her. >> olivia troye, one of the places this disinformation that trump spews, fox news has paid millions of dollars for their role in disseminating on behalf of donald trump, is about the sanctity of our elections, it is what brought sort of the first type of republican, liz cheney and adam kinzinger, to the side of being republican lightning rods on the pro- democracy side. what is your sense of how much is achievable? >> nicole, i am inspired.

i am actually inspired by the conversations. i am inspired by the mayor who was having these conversations with the fox news watchers. that is what needs to happen. we need to be reaching these voters and having these just one on one conversations with them on the center-right side. i think, you know, in michigan, i was there with the vice president last month and i saw her extend that olive branch to republican women and conservative women in that moment and i saw her speak in a way that is, you know, empathetic and impactful and understanding of how conservatives differ on the views. i also saw her say, you are welcome, as part of this coalition. that is what vice president harris is trying to do. we are saying, we don't have to

it is no surprise governor whitmer is so effective at making the case against trump. she had to do with him plenty, like during the covid-19 pandemic, when she called him out for leaving states like hers to fend for themselves. he responded by disparagingly referring to her as, quote, that woman from michigan. as she puts it in her fantastic new book, true gretch, politics and feel like bloodsport these days. luckily for me, we have a thick skin and short memory.

we are good at turning insults into you mark? a lot better cells. that is the best way to disarm bullies. you can trust me on this or i am not that woman from michigan. the offer mentioned governor of michigan, gretchen whitmer is here. she is the author of true gretch, what i've learned about life, leadership and everything in between. thank you for being here. >> glad to be with you. >> um, there's so much political news to get to but i want to start with the book. it is different for a political memoir, it is your signature realness. i want to dive right in and read from this incredibly powerful section. you write, in 2013, i was serving as michigan's senate minority leader. that year, the republicans tried to push through a bill requiring women in michigan to buy extra health insurance for abortion coverage, even in cases of rape or incest. my staff and i prepared a speech for me to give on the senate floor. i deliver my remarks as deliberately as forcefully as possible, letting my anger show. the back of my mind, though, my thoughts were spinning. for 23 years, i have pushed down the awful memory of what happened to be in college. i never in my life imagine talking about it in a public forum. yet suddenly, the course of one short speech, with tv cameras rolling, had to decide whether to reveal my deepest secret to the world. once it was out, there was no turning back.

let me play that moment for everyone. >> i shared with many people in my life but over 20 years ago, i was a victim of rape . thank god it did not result in a pregnancy. because i can't imagine going through what i went through and then having to consider what to do about an unwanted pregnancy from an attacker. and as a mother with two girls, i thought if they would ever go through something like i did, keeps me up at night. how extreme, how extreme does this measure need to be? i am not the only woman in our state that has faced that horrible circumstance. i think you need to see the face of the women that you are impacting by this vote today. >> if you are the most powerful person in the world or not, it is the most excruciating thing to talk about, um, do you find

it extraordinary that on that day all those years ago, you mustered the strength to tell your story? >> yeah, i got to tell you, just sitting and watching the old clip, i can feel my heart in my throat, like i feel it once again. and yet, i told that story multiple times 10 years later. i did it as governor and i got to sign a bill repealing that legislation. that part of the book, there is a chapter titled never give up, it took longer than it should have, but these fights are worth waging. we can win them. that is what this book is

about, bringing some light out to the world in a heavy, hard time and try to give a little inspiration. maybe you could laugh, there are interesting things about myself i never share before, light reading but i feel hopeful now. part of me is that philosophy. >> say more about feeling hopeful now. >> i have to tell you, it is understandable that americans might want to check out. it has been a hard six years from the pandemic to the political rhetoric to all the heavy stuff we have been navigating. and yet, i find when i actually roll up my sleeves and get more active is when i feel more vulnerable, getting into listening to people, connecting to people, you know, listening is my superpower. not enough people do it, especially politicians. so as i see kamala harris and tim walz as the standard bearers of the democratic party now, i know that these are regular people, middle-class folks, who understand how to solve problems. that gives me hope. i see the energy that is happening right now. it will still be hard, michigan is going to be in the center of it all, but i am hopeful.

i think seeing my fellow americans and working with people who actually want to solve problems like harris and walz. >> after trump won in 2016, i spent a lot of time in michigan who talked to two time voters for president obama. so much of what they wanted from him, he did not deliver. it is remarkable that the republican party nominated donald trump a third time. tell me what the political fight is, what are the sort of voters that are going to be most contested, what do you think the race, where do you think it stands today? >> michigan is a microcosm of the country. we are the most diverse of all those swing states.

my dad was a republican, traditional republican, maybe a nicole wallace republican. [ laughter ] my mother was a democrat. you know, it was a different time. we could have differences but agree on the facts and have different perspectives on this fax. we were centered on values and solving problems. we would get so angry, we would walk away from the table and not have thanksgiving together. it was a different time. i do think it was really important we make space at the table for people who are totally bought into the democratic agenda but can see someone who has genuinely try to solve problems and make their lives better. we have republicans virus in michigan. i think that is really important. we didn't win michigan by almost 11 points. we need to pull a lot of people over the political i get some independents. i value that. i know kamala harris and tim walz do, too and that is being done. >> it is interesting you sort of pull out, you know, there are a lot of reasons why you are one of the most beloved politicians in the country right now. you point to the ability to listen. one of the people you want to listen to are the people you want to listen to are the
