and tomorrow, saturdays at 11:00 p.m. right here on msnbc. it has been quite a week. i love spending it with you but for now i am signing off. wishing a good night from all of my colleagues. i will see you at the end of monday. it feels like this week must have been a tough one for donald trump and trump's national convention the main star power was hulk hogan and kid rock. a this week's democratic national convention there was pink, john legend, the chicks, stevie wonder, av alongoria. steve kerr, tony goldwyn, common, patty labelle, little jon, spikily, kerry washington,
9:02 pm
dl huely. mark hamil and oprah winfrey. the dnc was so star-studded that the organizers could afford to bump james taylor entirely, just cancel him for the sake of time. but what really probably made this week tough were the ratings. not only did the dnc outperform in ratings every single night but harris'acceptance speech had 3 million more than the rnc acceptance speech. in terms of all of the things that donald trump cares about, pretty super official, crowd, crowd size, celebrity, ratings, in terms of all of that, the dnc destroyed the rnc. but it also accomplished something more important. democrats reclaim whrad it means to be a real american
9:03 pm
from the republican party. >> look, kamala knows like we do, we all deserve the opportunity to build a descent life all of our contributions deserve to be accepted and valued. because no one has a monmon monopoly on what it means to be an american. no one. >> patriotism and you saw them everywhere. cowboy hats and camo hats and the american flag just everywhere. a football team came on stage. there was a drum line, the chicks sang the national
9:04 pm
anthem. there were stadium chants of usa! usa! it was all coming from democrats. democrats made the pitch that patriotism is a democratic value as in a value of the democratic party. equally as important democrats reclaimed family values as democratic values. remember, that trump's runningmate j.d. vance was trying to make family values in a wedge. vance claims it is led by childless cat ladies and the left is where parents are demeaned and diminished. factually advances wrong and they proved that. rather than running from the traditionally conservative relm of family values democrats reclaimed it. >> in minnesota we respect our

neighbors and the personal choices they make. and even if we wouldn't make those same choices for ourselves we got a golden rule, mind your own business. [ cheers and applause ] our own [ cheers and applause ] and that includes ivf and fertility treatments, and this is personal for gwen and i. if you never experienced the hell that is infertility i guarantee you that you know somebody that has. i can remember praying each night for a phone call. the pit in your stomach when the phone would ring and the salute agony when we heard the treatments had not worked. it took gwen and i years but we had access to fertility treatments and when our daughter was born, we named her
9:06 pm
hope. hope, gus, gwen you are my entire world and i love you. >> one of the most powerful moments of this week was seeing the family of harris' runningmate weeping with pride while watching walz speak. his son is neurodivergent and hope was only able because of fertility treatment and walz is proud of both of the facts. meanwhile, harris took on family values by expanding what it means to be a family. >> my mother she worked long hours and like many working parents she leaned on a trusted circle to help raise us. mrs. shelton, who ran the daycare below us and became a second mother, uncle sherman, aunt mary, uncle freddie,
9:07 pm
auntie chris. none of them family by blood and all of them family by love. family who taught us how to make gumbo, how to play chess and sometimes even let us win. family who loved us, believed in us, and told us we could be anything and do anything. >> this week at the dnc harris had her whole chosen family there to show support. her god children spoke at the dnc, her stepdaughter spoke while proudly bearing her tattoos i might ad, her husband emhoff was dorky and supportive and so proud emphasizing how much kamala harris has embraced his kids as a big part of their
9:08 pm
blended family. >> she was on the phone. my mind went to all of the potential crisis that the voice president could be dealing with, was it domestic? was it foreign? was it campaign? i could see she was focused and all i knew was that it must be something important. and it turns out it was. ella had called her. that is kamala. those kids are her priorities and that scene was a perfect map of her heart. >> not only was doug emhoff's ex-wife there at the dnc, his ex-wife produced the video that ran before her ex-husband's speech all about how emhoff and harris fell in love. that kind of big diverse family is what a lot of american families are today.
9:09 pm
that big diverse family is also what the democratic party is today. >> on behalf of the people, on behalf of every american regardless of party, race, gender or the language your grandmother speaks, on behalf of my mother and everyone who has ever set out on their own unlikely journey, on behalf of americans like the people i grew up with, people who work hard, chase their dreams and look out for one another. on behalf of everyone who's story could only be written in the greatest nation on earth. i accept your nomination to be

president of the united states of america. [ cheers and applause ] of america. [ cheers and applause ] . >> joining me now is msnbc analyst, black men in america the road to 2024 and alexis, president of the planned parenthood action fund. it is great to have you here. you were on the stage in chicago. >> we laid out the ways that the democratic party reframed a lot of the debates. one of the things that i thought was interesting is reproductive choice was a theme returned to again and again and again as were family values, a time in which i think the democratic party would have been maybe not talking about tackling abortion and reframe traditional family values at the same time. there was no hesitation. >> none. >> there was a firm belief that you can be pro-choice,
9:11 pm
believing in bodily atonomy and being pro-family. >> absolutely. right? i think the way in which the vice president has now taken on the mantle, right, and reframed the conversation to be one about trusting women, right? that really illustrated for me what the political project is that she is advancing. it is a multi-regional feminist democracy that means what happens when you actually put women at the center of your policy-making and thinking. how does that expand how we think about health care, expand about care, our economy, our communities, right? it is such a great contrast. donald trump, you know, proud of taking away 50% -- you know, reproductive rights for 50% of the population and she is centering us and it feels so good. >> all of it worked seamlessly. charles, alexis points out that women were centered in a lot of the arguments i guess you can say the democrats are making
9:12 pm
about why they should support a democratic ticket. men were part of that conversation in a way that we have not seen. i wonder what you made of the way in which masculinity was the, redefinition of a different kind of masculinity was part of the proceedings, too. a football coach out there talking about infertility struggles. you had the nation's first, you know, well, guys second, bill clinton had been president before, the first guy normal guy to be running to be the first gentleman in doug emhoff and tim walz a vice president to a potential president who would be a woman. what did you think of the masculinity presented by democrats on stage this week? >> reporter: alex, i think alexis hit the nail on the head when she used the word "contrast" it is clear that the dnc was intentional on drawing
9:13 pm
contrast and making more inclusive definitions of the masculinity apparent and putting that on center stage literally and figuratively. it is clear if you look at the rnc for example. they are a backward looking organization in how they are trying to cling to certain traditional constructs around masculinity and the dnc and the calculus, figuring out how they can attract a greater number of people if they expand definitions and the way we think about the concepts. it is a tricky line. it will not resinate with everyone. as far as getting their base energized and particularly involving and engaging new voters it is something that is consistent with what we are seeing out in popular culture. and then thinking it is going to pay off big dividends for them in november. >> i want you to come back with who that is not going to resinate with. before we do that, alexis, trump, i think it was today,
9:14 pm
claims to be a leader. my administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights. we laugh because of what he did to the supreme court and over hurricane turned the dobbs but there is a part that does not believe that trump will end a woman's right to choose. >> right. >> right. exactly. and i wonder, and i wonder how do you square that particular circle that he is drawing? >> i don't even know what kind of -- what kind of shape he is, it does not make sense to me because, this is still the same man that bragged about overturning roe v. wade, you know, the decision that went back to the states. none of it makes sense. i think what harris did last night in her speech, you know, really to me was the right frame. he is an undeeply serious man. he understands his party is losing because they have
9:15 pm
failed, they failed us around reproductive freedom and we are seeing registrations increase significantly among women, among women in banned states hitting positive to the democrats, the reason is that we are making, you know, we understand, right? what it means to not be able to make a decision if and how to become pregnant and what it means for our lives and futures. i think, you know, he is going to continue to do the things, we have the receipts. >> charles, when you talk about some of the dynamics people might not be ready for. gender and roles expanded and talking about the dynamic on stage. emhoff and barack obama and michelle obama. many ways michelle is the first lady the former first lady's speech was the more kind of
9:16 pm
combative. it was the more emotionally- fired up. his was kind of a meditation on what it means to be an american. in that way it was a shift of the traditional quote unquote if we are talking about warrior roles for men and women how you think that played? >> reporter: you know, i think that the in addition of introducing new constructs of masculinity is fine to embrace and it is not necessarily going to allienate part of the base as if you are not pushing them aside or feeling wrong for how they show up. if it is inclusive it needs to be inclusive to everyone. to that point one of the strongest and powerful moments for tim walz is when his former players came on stage. now you have essentially a group of jocks, high school football team super masculine, coming up, these guys not in
9:17 pm
suits, ties, beer bellies, jerseys, coming on stage and they were welcomed. and i think that was a very important sight in terms of letting people know you can fit in here, too. the demographic that i am talking about that is often turned off they are vilified for showing up as they are. that is something trump has been able to appeal to. there is a tight rope the dnc walked here. i think they did a good job about it. you don't have to call it out all of the time. you show it with your actions and the way they showed it did not turn people off. >> i thought the football, the football met fors in the governor's speech, the football players, the drumline, i was on the floor. flags everywhere. multiple nights signs usa, usa, none of that is by chance. that was all very, very intentional. that goes to what charles is talking about, reclaiming all of the freedoms under patriot.
9:18 pm
>> yes and you can feel it. you can feel the energy and the pride, right? i thinking it is, it is a function of none of that felt poll tested to me. it felt authentic and true from the top of the ticket all of the way down. you can just feel a sense of sincerity. this is who we are. we are not going to hide who we are. this is what it actually, there is what belonging manifests in a convention center. i think that is the joy that people are feeling. we don't have to hide who we are. we don't have to code switch because we think, you know, the rest of america is not going to love us and value us. we are going to do it every day in communities. we around stand we are on the right side of this. and i think that, along with just the beautiful metaphor of just moving the ball forward, right? not going back, moving it forward and claiming and being proud of the progress that we have made. that to me it is the most
9:19 pm
patriotic piece. >> and leaving a tent flap open. >> yes. >> alexis and charles, thank you very much for spending a little time on your friday night with me. appreciate you. we have much more ahead tonight including what happens when a vice presidential candidate and camera crew walk into a donut shop. the jd version of glazed and confused is coming up. first, another presidential candidate just dropped out of the race. who is it going to help? i will speak to liz smith on third-party candidates, that is next smith on third-party candidates, that is next ery! jessie loves playing detective. but the real mystery was her irritated skin. so, we switched to tide free & gentle. it cleans better, and doesn't leave behind irritating residues. and it's gentle on her skin. tide free and gentle liquid is epa safer choice certified. it's gotta be tide. a test or approve a medication. we didn't have to worry about any of those things thanks to the donations. and our family is forever grateful because it's completely changed our lives.
