labor day weekend is upon us. with it, the next chapter in the roller coaster 2024 presidential race. many voters will soon be taking a closer look at the candidates as the weeks countdown to election day. vice president kamala harris has a light schedule this weekend, as she gears up for battleground states appearances next week in concealing and michigan. and, prepares for the presidential debate september 10th. meanwhile, former president trump is cleaning up several critical masses of his own making, including a controversial visit to arlington cemetery that has some veterans outraged. and, a shifting message on reproductive rights that has even some members of his base
2:02 pm
scratching their heads. before we start, some breaking news out of the middle east. the israeli defense force says they have found a number of bodies during fighting operations in the gaza strip. the idf says troops are still in that area and they are working on identifying the remains. we will bring you more information on this breaking story as we get it. joining me now is congressman bobby scott virginia., and scott, thanks for joining us. >> good to be with you, reverend. >> congressman, i want to start with trump's controversial visit to arlington national cemetery this week. vice president harris put out a statement on social media today accusing trump of "disrespecting sacred ground, all for the sake of a political stunt." that is a quote.
2:03 pm
trump has said he posed for pictures at the request of a fallen service members family. the army says a member of trump's campaign pushed aside a staff member, trying to explain the cemetery rules. trump's running mate, senator j.d. vance responded to vice president harris's comments today suggesting it is somehow her fault that the soldiers died during the withdrawal from afghanistan. no, you are a member of the national guard and reserve. you are a congressman in virginia, where arlington is. what is your take on this incident? >> the rules are clear that you cannot use of the cemetery for partisan political purposes. this was explained to the trump campaign and they did it anyway like the rules don't apply to them. there are federal codes,
2:04 pm
processes at the cemetery and he just ignored the rules and did it anyway. then he used to the content for medical purposes. he just believes he's above the law. he disrespects the veterans, he disrespects the cemetery. this just, you know, nobody is surprised. >> now, another topic, the two campaigns are tussling over this weekend, is the upcoming debates. vice president harris today renewing her call to keep both candidates microphones on for the whole debate, claiming trump's handlers want to keep his microphone muted while he is not speaking. it was during the trump biden debate in june that that also occurred. now nbc news is reporting harris has been preparing for the debate stage in between campaign stops and her vice
2:05 pm
presidential duties. she will be looking for ways to get under trump's skin in the debate. do you think the microphone matter in this debate and what did you think, what will you be looking for when trump and harris go head to head? >> if the microphone is on, he will have the opportunity to embarrass himself as he did during the first debate four years ago. we would like to get to the substance. what are your positions on the issues? that is the important thing to look at. the challenge that vice president harris has is to focus on the issues. the trump campaign will be trying to divert attention from the substance and irrelevancies. they have a strategy of identifying problems and rather than going about softening the
2:06 pm
problems, they want to complain about the problems, get everybody mad, blame the democrats and that's the end of it. no solution, just complain and blame. her challenge will be to show that when she sees a problem, she sees it as an opportunity to solve the problem and make life better for people. that contrast will come through. >> substance and solutions and donald trump, not usually in the same sentence. let me go to this, vice president harris gave her first sitdown interview since becoming the democratic nominee. she elaborated on what she calls her plan for "an opportunity economy" which x includes expanded child tax credits, cash for first time homebuyers and a crackdown on price gouging for everyday items like groceries. what are you hearing from
2:07 pm
voters? is there economic message resonating? >> she is addressing the problem. people talk about higher prices and inflation. she is talking about putting money in pockets. when you go to the grocery store, you have more money with the child tax credit. we are lowering drug prices. trying to pass a childcare bill to deal with the other expenses families have. when we reduce drug prices, and and $35.00 a month, not a single republican voted for it. she is dealing with the problem of inflation, of, the trump campaign just complaints about it, makes people mad about it but the only solution on the table is increased tariffs, which will increase prices. focusing just on the substance, i would hope that people would see the difference and compare the candidates and know that vice president harris has a plan to make life better for
2:08 pm
you. all the trump campaign has is a bunch of complaints. >> finally, congressman house republicans are gearing up for another possible spending fight next month as the far right freedom caucus is pushing to attach an amendment requiring proof of citizenship to vote as an add-on to the continuing resolution that keeps the government-funded. you sit on the budget committee. what is your take on this political maneuvering, especially considering that, in 2020, it was republicans who objected to changing rules on voting so close to an election? >> i think the headline outlines the problem. it is all drama. we got out before the august recess a week early because
2:09 pm
they couldn't pass appropriations bills. now they just want to create drama shutting down the government over things that are totally unrelated to the budget. and i don't know what they are going to do. they are in the majority in the house. they control the flow of legislation. they ought to get down, let's get down to passing the appropriations bill so we can fund the government, rather than getting into all this drama over unrelated legislative battles and using a government shutdown as leverage over their culture wars and everything else. you'd be amazed at the kind of nonsense they put in some of these appropriations bills that did pass. but, again, it is just drama. we can call me and deliberately pass appropriations bills or we can dissipate in a bunch of drama and not get anything done but make it look like it is a complain and blame, it gives them something to talk about. we need to focus and i think
2:10 pm
that is the challenge that democrats have and vice president harris and tim walz have, focusing on the issues. we are trying to make life better for people, they are complaining and blaming. that, i think that contrast is going to come through. >> congressman bobby scott of virginia, thank you for being with us. joining me now is my friend and fellow civil rights activist, martin luther king the third, the chair of the drum major institute, and his wife, who is also my friend and fellow activist, andrea waters king, president of the drum major institute. thank you for joining us on this labor day weekend. let's start, i want to get into your thoughts, both of you, on the 61st anniversary this week of the mark on washington and where you see the state of the dream. let's start with the king families home state of georgia, where vice president harris and
2:11 pm
governor walz just wrapped up a campaign bus tour through the southern part of the state, where there were thousands at a rally in savannah. just over a month ago, most polling showed president biden trailing donald trump in georgia before he exited the race. now a bloomberg morning counsel paul conducted just last weekend found the vice president ahead of trump by two points among georgia's registered voters and headbutting three points with likely voters. we should know those numbers are within the margin of error. let me go to you first, andrea, what is the state of play in your home state five weeks into the harris campaign? >> there certainly is a renewed enthusiasm and a very real sense of hope that is penetrated the atmosphere here in georgia. you are seeing young people,
2:12 pm
people that can't, that aren't old enough to vote that around and engaged and certainly people that can vote. georgia has been on, has been, for the last several years, thanks to the tremendous work of the phenomenal black women here, has totally turned this state from solidly red to solidly purple. georgia has, in a very real sense, given democracy a when what we saw with the election of senator raphael warnock and senator jon ossoff. that same apparatus is on the ground and ignited but also enthusiastic. you come from a place of power, being for something rather than against. what we are seeing in georgia, people are coming together and standing together in the name and being for freedom, being
2:13 pm
for democracy, being for the best of who we are >> martin, let's switch to voting rights. as recently as a few weeks ago, donald trump was criticizing governor brian kemp for resisting his efforts to overturn the 2020 results. since then, pro-trump republicans on george's state election board have enacted several rules. democrats have sued the state over the rules concerned they could delay certification. there appears to be a fault between trump and brian kemp as the vice president has gained ground in georgia. some say trump is cozying up to brian kemp to dissuade him from removing pro trump state election officials. are you worried he won't and are you worried about these local county election boards would move to not certifying
2:14 pm
under any allegation, no matter how frivolous, that they see something wrong and they will not certify? >> i am absolutely concerned about it and we should all be concerned, as a suit has been filed. i saw congresswoman with a group of georgians who have come to the table. it feels like the governor may potentially try to do the right thing by removing these persons. you never can take that for granted. in politics, anything could happen. we should be eminently concerned because the people that do not remember their history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. we have seen what maga leadership , what maga embracing doesn't we must stand up for that which is right and just not slow the process by saying a certain criteria has to exist to validate the election.
2:15 pm
these folks have done what they did, put a law on the book that makes it harder. it really is very sad that in 2024, we are still trying to get our voting rights. that is why it is so important to pass the john lewis voting rights bill. that makes it, across the country, it sets the voting tone for all people in our nation. therefore, elections are consequential. i am concerned because we lost the voting rights act in 2013. it was eviscerated, and many other rights. if we do that, if we are not successful, it is possible the civil rights act would be watered down totally. we cannot, and will not let this happen. we must stay engaged. >> and this is what your father and mother gave their lives for. let me go to this. the atlanta journal- constitution reported this week
2:16 pm
that in barely the first month of the vice president campaign, voter registration has surged compared to the same late- summer stretch in 2020 and that black women led the served, with a 75% jump in registrations compared with the same 3 1/2 week stretch in 2020. what do you make of the data, andrea, especially in regards to black women? >> certainly it is not surprising. black women have always been the backbone of this country and certainly the backbone of democracy. we continue to show up even when this country has not shown up for us. and, i think that we are witnessing, we are seeing that yet again. again, in a very real sense, democracy is on the line. abigail adams, when her husband, john, was getting ready to go to the constitutional convention said don't forget about the ladies. women will not accept the
2:17 pm
country in which women don't have the right to vote. now, here we are many, many, many generations from that. but, we are in the same place. i don't think women will not a government which rights have been stripped, particularly when you look at black maternal health. black women are three times more likely to die in childbirth. so, these rights and these freedoms, they are really about our health. and, again, we are seeing black women, black women were the first ones to organize the national call where you have thousands and tens of thousands of black women coming together, we are going to do what we always have done, we are going to roll up our sleeves, we are going to stand together as sisters and we are doing this for our country but we also are doing it for those that came before us and for our children and our children's children. >> martin, as i said and the opening of this segment, this week we mark the 61st anniversary of the march on
2:18 pm
washington for jobs and freedom. it was a pivotal event for our nations struggle with civil rights. last month mark 60 years since the signing of the civil rights act, made possible in part by the original march on washington . in between these anniversaries, you and i and and have led commemoration marches and dealt with the issues at that time, although at all of our commemorations, we were all upstaged by yolanda, your daughter. that is another show. the vice president campaign has elicited tremendous enthusiasm from diverse voters. i've seen you and the drum major institute in chicago meeting latino leaders and you on the floor, you being involved. you brought out a lot of the situations that all communities are facing and some of them
2:19 pm
maga movements of the racist and sexist critiques echoed, if not generated by the republican nominee. how would you characterize the state of civil rights two months out from our election and 61 years after your father's historic speech "i have a dream"? >> reverend, i always want to be positive but i have to start with struggling but act ordinarily hopeful because of the candidacy of vice president harris and governor walz. we were truly struggling a month back and this is not to denigrate them past leadership with what the president is doing and has done. it is really to say the hope is renewed. across this country, as you said as it relates to women, it seems like it is 60 to 75 or more percentage of women who
2:20 pm
are getting engaged. i think that as it relates specifically to civil rights, again, we must be successful with his candidacy for us to continue to build on the legacy of civil rights, to ensure that they are not just fortified but they are put in place permanently, so that nothing can ever push people backward. the universe goes forward. human beings are trying to move us backwards and have taken steps to codifying legislation. some human beings, the republican party, to say that we are going to go backward. humankind, the universe is going forward and we all must find ways to take our nation forward, not to ever leave out anybody. everybody in america ought to have a decent home. it doesn't have to be a 5000 square-foot home. it could be a 200 square foot home but a decent home, a decent job, health care, and
2:21 pm
justice. that is not the case yet. in 2024, 61 years after my father delivered his dream of freedom, justice, equality for all freedom kind, we have work to do. it doesn't mean we haven't made progress but we have to make far more progress for us to actually realize that dream. >> amount of time. drum major institute, i know you are working with certain stadiums, and a felt and all and you all are trying to keep the dream agenda alive. what can we look forward to? out of time but i wanted to quickly give us the forecast. >> we are spending the next five years galvanizing the country, particularly young people, to ignite a youth movement where all of us can come together and we will have 100 million hours of service by the 100th birthday of martin luther king jr.. it is a way to remind us that we all are part of the dream and we all have a
2:22 pm
responsibility to come together and stand together, make the dream a reality by hoping to serve each other. >> martin luther king the third and andrea watters king, thank you both for being with us this weekend as we commemorate 61 years today. coming up, former president trump's controversial visit to arlington cemetery is a reminder he is unfit to be commander-in-chief. plus, the head of the american federation of teachers will be here to reply to senator j.d. vance over his incendiary comments about childless women and her in particular. stay tuned. you are watching politics nation. nation. is unmatched connectivity and 5g solutions from t-mobile for business. t-mobile connects 100,000 delta airlines employees. powers tractor supply stores nationwide with reliable 5g business internet.

this week, this week, former president trump went to arlington national cemetery, supposedly to pay tribute to soldiers killed during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan on the third anniversary of that operation. but, the behavior of trump and his handlers during the visit was anything but honorable. trump posed for photos with family members of the following, flashing a thumbs up sign amid the tombstones. an army spokesperson says trump's entourage shoved aside an employee trying to enforce cemetery rules. trump's campaign would later try to clean the employee was
2:27 pm
suffering from a "mental health episode." the army says they were simply doing their job. the incident was reported to military police but the cemetery worker did not press charges, according to "the new york times" officials feared the employee could face retaliation if identified. the reason for all the rules should be obvious to anyone who has ever served or had a loved one in the military. while two marine families invited trump to take photos, other families did not, and at least one took issue with seeing their relatives graves and pictures published all over the world. it is painfully clear trump does not understand this and what is worse, his past behavior suggest he doesn't care. a few weeks ago, he's worked out rates adjusting the presidential medal of freedom given to civilians was superior
2:28 pm
to the medal of honor given to soldiers who were badly wounded or killed for their country. during his presidency, general john kelly says trump called america's war dead "losers and suckers," and reportedly refused to visit a military cemetery because it was raining. it is shocking that a man with these kinds of beliefs was ever in charge of our forces and absolutely inconceivable that he would be elevated to the position again. not when wars are raging overseas and american veterans are in need of quality and support and care right here at home. when it comes to the office of commander-in-chief, donald trump is simply unfit to serve. i got you.

election, new polls reveal a tight race between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump in key battleground states. a "bloomberg morning consult" survey has harris ahead in every battleground state save for arizona. according to the latest fox news poll, the vice president holds the lead over trump in three key sun belt states, in georgia and nevada, she has polled ahead by two points. in arizona, she is up by one. all of the results are still within the margin of error. but, they show a dramatic shift in the race since president biden bowed out. joining me now is for commerce man, david jolly and former congress woman donna edwards, both are msnbc political analysts . donna, what do these new poll numbers tell you about the state of the race and about voter enthusiasm?
2:34 pm
do you think we are seeing a convention bounce for harris or could there be more to come? >> it is more than that. i think since vice president harris got into this race, the level of enthusiasm, particularly among democrats, and independents, has been growing. i think the convention, one speaker after another, including the vice president acknowledged the this is going to be a close race. i think that is the way they are approaching the campaign, which is very smart. and, it says to me that voters are taking a look at the harris candidacy for they are comparing it to donald trump and they are making more affirmative decisions about supporting the vice president and governor walz. i think that this is going to be a close race. we've always known that. and, i think the vice president's campaign is
2:35 pm
approaching this just like that. >> david, trump is resorting to his favorite move, by attacking the pollsters. he's particularly upset about the fox news results, which is campaign is calling "atrocious." do you see a reason to be skeptical about these numbers? after all, we have seen polling underestimate trump's support in the past. >> i don't think there's a reason to be skeptical of the polling. we take each individual poll as it is per the consensus is pretty clear , this is setting up to be as tight as 2016 or 2020. i would much rather be in vice president harris issues then in donald trump's. what was president harris has demonstrated she can do, since the day joe biden withdrew if she continues to grow and expand her coalition and grow and expand the enthusiasm behind her candidacy. donald trump is incapable of expanding his coalition by a
2:36 pm
single voter. that is why you see him losing his mind a bit. he is an unhinged candidate right now with no ability to expand his coalition or give the country anything new, which is why you see a lot of the vicious, vile attacks on the vice president and democrats because it is the only card he has to play. >> of donna, trump talked a lot about reproductive rights this week but he kept changing his story. first, he suggested a six-week abortion been is too short but then he said he would vote against a ballot measure that would expand and protect abortion access in his home state. vice president harris clapped back on x this morning, pointing out trump got roe v wade overturned, which made state abortion vance possible, and predicting he would sign a national ban if elected. trump also claimed this week he
2:37 pm
supports government funding of ivf treatment, even though many conservatives opposed both the procedure and increased spending on health care. the former president has been trending really hard to have it both ways on reproductive issues. is that falling apart, donna? >> well, he has absolutely no credibility. he engineered the overturning of roe v wade. he engineered the appointment of justices on the supreme court who would do exactly that. he took credit for overturning roe v wade, which has resulted in abortion bans in dozens of states and extreme laws that prevent women from getting the health care that they need. there's no way that donald trump now can try to weasel his way around what he engineered. so, when voters, he has no credibility at all on this
2:38 pm
issue. i expect it is going to be a burning issue throughout the collection and certainly on election day when voters show up to vote. >> david, let's look ahead to the debate on september 10th. vice president harris again today is calling on trump to allow for both candidates microphones to be on for the entire time. microphones were muted while the other candidates were speaking were during the first debate between trump and president biden. the same rule was part of the original plan for this debate. do you think the harris campaign is wise to continue to press for open microphones or how do you predict this will get resolved? >> i think the vice president is capable of either environment , microphones on or off. what we are seeing from donald trump is he tries to sow confusion and chaos going into a debate. it is different than a camp trying to set low expectations
2:39 pm
or high expectations. he tries to create an unsettling environment for viewers, for the hosts, as well as for his opponent, in this case, vice president harris. it's going to be a very important debate. i would much rather be in vice president harris's candidacy right now. she has the momentum. it is clear she will likely win the popular vote. based on what we are seeing, she will probably win the electoral college as well. the question is what puts i track that? one could be a dampening of enthusiasm, a misstep or a dramatic change of domestic or international affairs. the fact is a debate is one of the few inflection points were the american people to judge both candidates. they get to listen to them, they get to see them go toe to toe. i think the vice president will do great but donald trump's technique will be to create chaos and unsettle the candidate. i don't think it will work. >> david jolly and donna edwards, thank you both for being with us. coming up, it eesenator jd vance hasn't learned his lesson. trump's running mate is

recently rediscovered comments he has made two years ago attacking childless teachers, including the head of one of the country's largest teachers unions. take a listen. >> so many leaders of the left, i hate to be so personal about this, but there people without kids, trying to brainwash the minds of our children. that really disoriented me and it really disturbs me. randi weingarten, the head of this powerful's teachers union in the country, she doesn't have a single child. if she wants to brainwash and destroy the minds of children, she should have some of her own and leave ours alone. joining me now is randi weingarten, president of the american federation of teachers thank you for joining me today. randi, glenn was, let me go here first. gwen was, the wife of governor
2:45 pm
tim walz, responded to what jd vance had to say about you. >> i read that jd vance said he was "really disturbed by teachers who don't have biological children. we do not take kindly to folks like jd vance telling us when or how to start our families. mr. vance, how about you mind your own business? >> that is when teachers take. what is your response to what senator vance had to say about you, randi? >> so, referent, and i know each other a long time. i am used to, just like you are used to, people going at us and insulting us because they want to try to disconnect us from the people we serve for the people we represent or what we are trying to do. so, that is what vance is
2:46 pm
doing. he's trying to disconnect parents from teachers and, just like trump throws out name- calling and bullying tactics, that is what vance is doing. i don't really care about it, myself, other than the fact that he's actually wrong and i have a great family with kids and grandkids and lots of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. this is what is so venal about it. this was the start of the school year. when he doubled down on this, he knows it is the start of the school year. he has kids himself. this is that moment when you need to reconnect parents and teachers to create the safe, welcoming environment that kids really need to succeed. so, he's actually doing something really undermining of kids by doing this to teachers all across america.
2:47 pm
the second thing i would say is that there are so many people in so many modern families, why would you dismiss all of them? i thought the republican party said that they wanted to have all these parents be part of them? they don't, they just want to smear people. the third thing i would say is that there is such pain for people who haven't been able to have kids, haven't been able to have families. you hear all the ivf stories right now. so, think about the cruelty, think about the undermining of the parent teacher relationship. it feels like he's completely out of touch with real people and with what real people need. democrat, republican, independent, in terms of who they want to see as a president or vice president. so, it is shameful. it is disgusting, it is gross. but, it tells you the character
2:48 pm
of who he is and who is running for president and vice president in the republican party. >> schools are beginning to open up. to have this issue even out there is so unhealthy for students and their parents. senator vance has not apologized for his remarks. in fact, he has doubled down, claiming he wasn't targeting you for being child lists instead accusing you of brainwashing children. what do you make of that claim that you are somehow indoctrinating students? coming from a sitting senator, who is on a major party's presidential ticket. >> welcome often, so many people have answered this in so many different ways. often i think that the people who level these charges are people who want to indoctrinate themselves. they don't understand what we do as teachers. we teach critical thinking. we teach context.
2:49 pm
we teach the kids how to think, not what to think. what we are not going to do is we are not going to shy away from honest history. this is the same group of people who banned books, who think or try to justify aspects of slavery, who don't want america to actually learn, warts and all, we can do a better job, that the arc of history can bend toward justice. we have to deal with the struggling and the striving and do that work. so, it is, again, this sense of not either understanding or wanting to bully him smear and create fear when you need that real engagement between teachers and parents and kids. the most important thing we can do right now for our children, particularly given all the social media and all the effects of covid-19, is that we
2:50 pm
create an engaging, safe, welcoming environment so that they can soar. what these guys are saying is they don't want that. >> now, we are out of time but i must ask you this quickly before we go. project 2025, the right-wing blueprint for a potential second trump administration, written by the heritage foundation, outlines a plan for dismantling the department of education. yesterday, former president donald trump headlined an event sponsored by the heritage foundation in washington, the moms for liberty summit. what are your thoughts on the project 2025 agenda, should it actually come to fruition in a second trump term? >> let me say this really simply. the use policy words so that they make it inaccessible to people. what they are trying to do is basically say only rich kids in this country or kids whose parents have power should have opportunity. everything they are trying to
2:51 pm
take away from when they say dismantle the department of education, it is taking away, sorry for my alphabet soup, title i progress. everything johnson and others tried to do to level the playing field, to create an opportunity, they are trying to take away. they are basically saying tax cuts for the rich, take everything else away for middle- class or poor kids. >> randi weingarten, thank you for being with us is always. up next, my final thoughts on a very special anniversary. stay with us. oost high protein, complete nutrition you need, and the flavor you love. so, here's to now... now available: boost max! what's up, you seem kinda sluggish today. things aren't really movin'. you could use some metamucil. metamucil's psyllium fiber helps keep your digestive system moving
