tv   Gaza Under Attack 55  PRESSTV  January 14, 2024 12:02am-12:31am IRST

12:02 am
welcome back to gaza under attack coming to you from the british capital london i am said pureza as more palestinian men, women and children are killed in relentless us israeli bombardment of the besieged gaza strip, here is a quick look at some of the latest developments. day two of hearings in the genocide case against the israeli regime at the highest court, the international court of
12:03 am
justice. the legal team representing the israeli regime, have blamed the palestinian resistance group hamas for the suffering of the civilians in the gaza strip, and say the allegation of genocide against israel is baseless. it also says, the icj has no jurisdiction to order the israeli regime to hold its ongoing massacre of palestinians in the gaza strip. those comments come day after the south african legal team present. five-point argument to the court from the denial of food and medicines to force displacements and mass killings of palestinians, as examples of the israely of regimes intent to commit genocide. in another development, joint us-uk air strikes on yemen and cirola resistance fighters have condemned the strikes and warned the us and uk should be ready to pay hefty price. they're also saying the attacks on israel bound ships in the red sea aimed at forcing tel aviv to stop the... shed in the gaza strip will continue,
12:04 am
and the uk gears up for yet another national palestine solidarity demonstration, calling for the unfolding genocide in the blockaded coastal enclave to stop. according to gaza's health ministry, more than 23,700 palestinians have been killed in the world's largest open air prison since october 7th, among them at least 10,00 children. joining me on this program, nhs surgeon and political analyst dr. ranjid burar and via skype from johannesburg south africa mohammed desai. of mohammed is the executive director of africa for palestine and the co-founder of bds, south africa. gentlemen, thank you for joining me on the show. i'll start with you, ranjit, um, two days of hearing um at the hag at the icj, your reflections of what you heard. thanks, good to be with you. "it's
12:05 am
been for me incredibly powerful and and and moving testimony, which in a sense surprised and shocked myself. um, the icj is, sensibly a un body, but in as much as the international court of justice acts, it has in always acted in its history thus far, perhaps since its founding, which was around the genocide convention itself comes of course from the condemnation of nazi genocide in world war ii, and it was that. was the motivation for its formation, but if you see the un as body that's been dominated by its by the major powers in particular by us, britain, france, the nato powers, it's been very key that none of the crimes of those powers have ever come before the icj, whereas often they will drag their victims before the icj, and i'm thinking particularly of slobodan milosevic who was dragged before the icj and died in in their courts essentially, um, so i didn't expect much of it, but actually to see the very... testimony to see
12:06 am
south africa's justice minister come and speak on behalf of the international community. we know the more than 150 nations in the general assembly of the un have passed resolutions condemning and calling out israel's genocide and demanding a cease fire. and we know that the permanent security council, which has five permanent members and of rotating members, so there are eight on it, have also essentially with the with the veto of the us and the abstention of the uk. demanded the same that there was cease fire so it's very clear in the eyes of the world that it's the uk and um and the us who are protecting israel, but what i wasn't expecting is to be so moved in this relatively sterile environment that i consider the it's like away game you're you're you know you're in the home of imperialism but the powerful testimony both of the ministers you know talking about nelson mandela his solidarity with the palestinians he says that we're not free even though apartite in south africa. has gone
12:07 am
until apartite ends in israel, to hear those words spoken again, and in a forum where it can't be ignored by the world's media has been very powerful, and perhaps we can talk of more about the the the testimony. "the initial testimony the their irish prosecutor employed by the south south africans, yeah, was very powerful, concentrated summary, and really shows that it's an open and shut case, that that there's no way in my opinion that we can't convict the israelis of this crime, that the facts are overwhelming, so really it's not just the israelis who are on trial, it's their imperialist backers, and for that reason they're very much attacking it as a forum, and it's it's the institution." to me that's on trial, let me bring muhammed in. mhammed, your your um reaction to this landmark genocide case brought by africa at the icj, it was an absolutely phenomenal week for many south africans, i think that even
12:08 am
though there were very serious issues being discussed by the international court of justice, it was moment in which many south africans have have... felt very proud, very felt very proud that our government is representing the very will of our people and that the voices on our streets are in sync with the voice of our state and of our government, think i agree with the previous speaker that whilst it was very legalistic environment whilst it was of very formal tone that many of us couldn't help but be moved. one of the sentences in the application by south africa that was communicated by one of the advocates on behalf of our country that really stood out for me was in addition to detailing and documenting the various crimes that israel has committed in the last three
12:09 am
months, the one part that really stood out for me was the mentioning and reminding of the international community that in addition to the 2000 and people that have been killed, more than 10 th00 of them children, that in addition to these numbers, they are also, and this is well documented in sarah africa's application that that there are also 7,500 palestinians currently lying under the rubble caused by the destruction by of israel, and that these 7,500 palestinians are either dying as slow death or or their bodies are decomposing due to the elements of the... weather and so the moving testimony by the african by the african legal team combined combined with the kind of outporing of solidarity and support that came from the global south, i think that south africa took the initiative and had the courage and the
12:10 am
boldness to go to the international court of justice, not withstanding the kind of pressures that will now be put on our country by for example the united states and by for example britain and few other countries, but even though south africa may have taken the lead, i think that it must also be mentioned that south africa also had the support of countries including bolivia, colombia, venezuela, of iran, of the various of of brazil, of various other african countries as well as major blocks representing various countries across the globe, but i think that one of the one of the key takeaways was that... we really saw the global south here up against uh the global north right? while governments in europe throw their weight behind the israeli regime, european parliamentarians have been speaking up in support of the south african case. press tv's cameras were on hand to get the thoughts of
12:11 am
lawmakers on their hopes for the rcj case and why they were advocating for palestinians. i think this is the last chance of the international law to prove that the... is still any humanity in the world uh, because we're uh witnessing live on television, now a genocidal, genocidal war of israel, and if it stays unpunished, it's not only a problem for all palestinians all over the world, but for all humanity, and so it's very important today that before the international court of justice, there will be a conviction of israel for the atrocities and for the war crimes that they are uh waging on the palestinian people every day, and so... "i think it's very important that also in europe this signal is is heard, because there is still association agreement between europe, the european union and israel, and we would like to suspend immediately this association uh agreement, because there has to be sanctions,
12:12 am
there has not only to be a conviction of israel, but there have to be sanctions also against this criminal regime of israel today, and that is also important for the european. people themselves, because uh, solidarity, humanity, international law are not only important for the south of this planet, but also for every human being here in the north the planet in europe. there's a huge pressure on the court. uh, to come up with an honest verdict, uh, we need a verdict that is free of influence from major powers. we know that the americans will be squeezing the the 15 uh countries that have a representative on the court, and uh, so there will be under terrible pressure, uh, but it's about time now that people started to stand up for the truth and stand up for justice, and stand up for justice for the palestinian. on this occasion and stop the horrendous slaughter that's taking place, because unless we get
12:13 am
anonest verdict from this court, this slaughter is going to go on too long more. this is pivotal moment in international relations, you can feel the expectation in the mood here, but not just here physically, all of the people all over the world who are glued to their tv and their computer screens following this, it's actually unprecedented, and if this cour doesn't rule based on the evidence, if it's allows itself to be the victim of might is right, political interference, the consequences of that for international law will be far reaching, so i hope and expect that that doesn't happen, because i think we've never seen shockingly evidence like this in such textbook definition of genocide, and if that can't be upheled in the court, then the court is futile, and new world order will have to be built, and i don't think the people are here or the people that... home or the people of the world will allow that to happen. some of the meps speaking to press dedia at the hag,
12:14 am
dr. brar. israel's defense is ostensibly hamas made us do it. that certainly doesn't hold water. it doesn't hold any water at all. um, there's been overwhelming pressure from our politicians, press, media. talk tvs present. 'appears morgan as being an absolute classic example of someone who has been covering this very extensively, interviewing people, and very deliberately bullies people into trying to condemn hamas, so they're doing few things, they're conflating the palestinian population as a whole, all seven million of them with a resistance organization, they're confleiting terrorism with a actually democratically elected organization, let's not forget hamas are the elected government of the gazan people, um, and on the other hand, they're using the fact'. that our government has criminalized this democratically elected organization, which is a resistance movement of an occupied
12:15 am
people who therefore legally have the right to exist, using the fact that our government has made them illegal, put the list of outlawed organizations, and therefore to express your solidarity puts yourself at risk of persecution, and they've begun to do this in our country, so you mentioned the british government having proscribed uh hamas, what do you make of the government's uh refusal to support the south african case at the icj, although they provided 18 or more pages of legal arguments supporting gambia's similar case against uh myanmar in the rohinga massacre of 2017. well, it's it's obviously a word hypocritical, but it's hypocritical based on the really existing economic and power relations of imperialism. so what underlies our country's support of israel is the fact that israel is an unsinkable aircraft carry in the middle east, which is... the way in which britain has tried to rule the colonies and neo colonies it
12:16 am
acquired since world war one in the psy pico agreement, so it does uncritically support the genocide, that's the reality, it's always tried to step back and claim it's above it, and it's difficult to make out what's happening, but in every way possible, britain of course supports israel, and it's that that's being exposed, not just israel as the perpetrator of genocide has being seen more and more, how can you wipe out physic? 1% of the population, injure physically 4% of the population, put the entire population at threat of famin, very really imminent threats to the population, stop, bomb their schools, mosks, hospitals, all these things, how can you do that and support it, well they do support it because they aim is a bigger one and that is extracting loot and wealth and resources from the entire region of the middle east, and that's why they support, and those are facts, those judges are expected to take it to account as they do their deliberations before. a verdict uh mohammed, how do you think this case at the international court of justice has impacted
12:17 am
global public opinion against israeli actions? i think that the south african case put forward by the lawyers of representing our country was put forward in such a crisp, clear and concise manner that was really high, it was really difficult not to be able to see the situation for what is, i think that on the other hand, the case that was put forward by israel was a really hopeless one, i think that in for example, in south africa for the next few hours after the... case the number one topic that was trending in our country on on the social media platform twitter was a ways the evidence, people in south africa really weren't did not find the israeli case convincing and i think that this is the message that many others around the world around the globe were also seeing all right muhammad you have frozen up it looks
12:18 am
like we've lost uh muhammad once again we'll try and get him back on perhaps i can put the same question to ranjid here, i asked him about how the case has impacted global public opinion, but i would like to ask you how you think global public opinion has helped bring this case about? i think it's so clear that the vast masses of humanity stand with the palestinian people and have their sympathy against this genocide. it's always been the case that the media in our country has been very tightly controlled, the ear of social media, although social media platforms themselves are very tight. controlled and censored has allowed very compelling in a direct footage which speaks above and beyond words and knowledge and historical understanding of the case very directly to people a picture speaks a thousand words, it can, and of course pictures can be manipulated and tell lies, but there are so many obvious pictures, children running in the streets and being shot in the head,
12:19 am
pregnant women being shot dead with their children running away, people being dragged from the rubble, you not so... hospitals at the in the court case yesterday in icj, there was a picture given of the medicine sant frontier surgeon from northern gaza who'd written, you know, they can't do any operations anymore, they'd wipe their operating board clean as a doctor and a surgeon, i'm very used to these boards where we're listing the cases we have to do for the day, they wiped it clean said tell the people we've done what we could, and then they told you that same board two days later when the hospital had been struck and the doctor who wrote that had been murdered, all right so... "the evidence of genocide is overwhelming, the pressure is overwhelming, the labour party, which stands with imperialism all along the line and throughout the history it has done, its leader kier starmer um has been making statements that we stand in support of israel, we want israel to win that we shouldn't have a cease fire and has felt under, he's been surprised at the pressure
12:20 am
he's felt and labor have felt, so there is tremendous public pressure which is impacting on our politicians, and yet..." "they feel themselves to be in a bubble where they're not really responsible to the people, we saw that with the iraq war, two million people came onto the streets and they were sending, tony blair sent the bombs, bombers over their heads as they were marching, but but there's a something slightly different, you was at the demonstration of million people on the 11th of november here, it's the biggest demonstration since the iraq war, and the level of anger of the people, the level of political understanding of the people is much higher and their level of understanding that..." "actually our government, the governments of the west, the nato governments are responsible, is higher than it's ever been before, and to me this is a great positive, because the people are waking up to where real responsibility for these very deep crimes lies, and and we're going to see more of that anger being vented this weekend here in in london, just a quick reminder if if you've just joined us, this is gaza under
12:21 am
attack with me sy we take a deep dive into the news of and around the israely atrocities against." now stallwert of the anti-war movement, stonge pro-palestinian advocate and former leader of the uk's labour party, jeremy corbit, is in the hague and had this to say to the journalists there. i just want to put on record my great thanks to the republic of south africa for having the courage to take the case on in the first place, to bring it here at the international court of justice and thank all those other governments around the world that have joined in. case of pointing out that the bombardment of children, of civilians, of schools, of hospitals, of homes, of agricultural places and the driving of the population of gaza into places they were told was safe and turn out to be incredibly dangerous. the bravery them in bring the case and the world hearing
12:22 am
it today is something that i think we should all thank south africa for. secondly, in presenting the case, they did it in non-sensational terms, they went in detail through the history of the uh genocide convention and how it came about after the horrors of the second world war and other genocides that have taken place, and pointed out that what is happening in gaza is attack against the population of gaza as a whole, that is where the genocide convention comes in, but these things don't come from nowhere, israel's weapons, are being supplied by the united states with the support of many european countries, including my own, and the demonstrations in support of the people of palestine all around the world again. bigger and bigger, the world is woken up to the plight of the palestinian people, and it's taken the loss of 30,000 lives for the world to wake up at last. i hope that the interim
12:23 am
orders that have been requested by the south african delegation this morning, will be granted, and there will be demand that the bombardment of gaza cease, but in the meantime, those powerful governments that supply israel with its weapons. can also make that demand for a ceasefire and assist that by stopping the supply of those weapons that have been used to kill so many people in gaza. i want to conclude by saying this, thank people all over the world for speaking up for the palestinian people. as mentioned at the top of the show, the us and the uk have launched air ship and submarine strikes against targets across yemen. in a statement, the russian government. has strongly condemned the strikes describing them as irresponsible. the move by the us and the uk could promote a regional conflagoration a time of heightened tensions. let's take a
12:24 am
listen to that statement. the united states stance in the united nations security council on the red sea is only a pretext for further escalation of the situation of tension in the region. we strongly condemn these irresponsible actions by the united states and its allies. a large scale military. escalation in the red sea region could reverse the positive trends that have recently emerged in the yemeni settlement process as well as provoke a destabilization the situation throughout the middle east region. mohammed um what do you think this which way do you think is verdict at the icj will go? we are concerned as sir africans that they will be interference from the united states and from other powers that are close to the israeli regime, however, it would really jeopadize the very value of international law, the very value of human rights, and we're hoping that the judges of
12:25 am
that court will not be subjected to the kind of political pressures that some have been suggesting would be would be used, we do hope that in the next week to have a urgent judgment coming out, calling for immediate cease fire of of israeli of israel's assault on the palestinian gaza strip, but regardless the actual judgement, we do feel that israel really has lost the moral ground, this was one of the last attempts that that it could have that he could have used to salvage itself, but in the process it really has only but exposed its crimes for the world to see and for the world to judge. um, seas spire is indeed the most - think at the moment uh and ranjit brah um, what are your fears uh based on what we heard the russian spokesman there say uh of of a misstep political or military
12:26 am
that might lead to a regional war, all out war in the region. thank you, i mean less than a minute by the way, i don't think you can call it mistep, it's a very deliberate attempt to maintain a stranglehold on the middle east, so joe biden and cameron have fallen over themselves to... say that their attacks on on the so-called hoti militia on ansara and yemen have got nothing to do with the palestine conflict, they have everything to do with, because both are aspects of their attempt to maintain domination over the middle east, which is such a core interest that we had jeremy corbin speaking, jeremy corbin, let's not forget was removed from the labour party leadership by an unholy alliance of his own party administration, the state and the tory party and the media precisely because they said any support for palestine was anti-semitic and... pushing this button, that's the reason i myself was arrested for selling a book, so any support for those political causes, just as they may be, which threaten the material interest of imperialism
12:27 am
in the middle east, this is what we're talking about, they want to get their hands on the oil, so my fear is that they are prepared to escalate, because what we're seeing is a reinvigoration of really what is national liberation struggle across the middle east to force imperialist interests out to the great material benefit of the masses of the middle east. actually to the masses of working people around the world. okay, dr. ranjit barar and muhammad desai, thank you very much to both of you for your time and thoughts and thank you for watching us. join us again next time for the latest news and analysis. until then, continue to keep palestine in your hearts. goodbye.

when palestinian journalist shirin abu aghale was killed by an israeli sniper and may 11, 2022, the israelis meant to get across a clear message that they don't want any narrative other than their own under decades old occupation of palestinian land. and their aggression. it wasn't the first time israeli sought to put gag on the alternative narrative, and every time it has failed. watch the history of the israeli measures and palestinian counter measures in this documentary.
12:30 am
the headlines on press tv, the palestinian resistance movement hamas says israel has failed to achieve any of its objectives over the past 100 days despite committing genocide in gaza. the lebanese resistance movement has. launches retaliatory strikes on israeli military targets and made escalating tensions in the southern part of lebanon. and people around the world take to the streets to condemn the us israely genocide in gaza.
