tv   Gaza Under Attack  : PRESSTV  January 18, 2024 12:02am-12:30am IRST

12:02 am
in gaza, children are dying first, adults will follow, the words of francesca albanesa, un special reporter on human rights in the occupied territories. hello and welcome back to gaza under attack, i'm said pureza in london. the israeli occupation force continues its relentless shelling of the gaza strip. at least 26 people have been killed in the latest strikes across the blockaded. more
12:03 am
rockets fired from gaza into the south of israel, causing damage to buildings, but no casualties, tensions remain high between apartide israel and resistance group hezbollah as they exchange fire in southern lebanon. the un chief antonio guteresh has called for immediate cease fire to tamp down the flames of a wider war, his words. iran's military has launched missile strikes on what it described as terrorist positions in syria and in israeli. center in iraq as part of retaliation for deadly terrorist attack that killed tens of civilians in the southeastern of city of kermon earlier this month. the uk government is under fire for not seeking parliamentary approval before launching joint strikes with the us on yemen's ancerola fighters last week. also in the uk, the country's defense secretary grant shap speaks of much wider military engagements in the not too distant future, saying the era of the peace dividend is over. more than 24 thousand
12:04 am
palestinians have now been killed since the us israeli carnage in gaza began, including more than 10,400 children. joining me on this edition of gaza under attack, british palestinian student and activist tarek othman and via skype amar kasmi. armar is legal analyst who has worked alongside pro-palestinian stalwarts, parliamentarians chris williamson and jeremy corben. thank you both for being. here, i'll start with you, um, omar, and more than 100 days on, the relentless bombing of the gaza strip, it is uh, huge milestone, tarek, um, the un has of just said that there is increase in hepatitis a cases in the gaza strip, yet there is no end inside, since the last time we have spoken, how dire things have become, it is,
12:05 am
it is truly indescribable um the the death, the destruction, the disease that that israel has intentionally manufactured in gaza has been um, you know, it's it's it's unlike any in modern conflict, and it's unlike anything that i have ever seen in my anyone has seen in my lifetime, um, and it's truly a revealing moment where israel's genocidal. and genocidal effects have been very very of clear um over, since i was last on the show, this was perhaps something that was still, i think could might have still been able to be, debated about, argued about, but you know, since we've seen more and more statements, since we've seen more and more disease and more and more scale of of of destruction, it's becoming you, i would say impossible, i think debate the genocidal effects of of israel's indiscriminant. campaign and the
12:06 am
genocidal intent was the reason south africa has taken the israel regime to the icj, mmar, more than 100 days on, we are awaiting the uh icj interrum uh ruling, what is your legal forecast, because the the the closest that the icj has ever gotten to passing a conviction of genocide was in the case of uh bosnia versus serbia in the 90s. well look, i mean, all that south africa at the moment is really asking uh the international court of justice to do is to pass some um provisional uh measures essentially to uh call on the designest state to end its genocidal campaign against the people of gaza and the rest of the people of palestine, but at the end of the day the powers of the icj, it's enforcement are rather ten. you can look at
12:07 am
the case of nicaragua against the united states back in the mid-1980s where the united states was found to be supporting the contras militia groups basically. uh which were trying to destabilize the new revolutionary government of nicaragua, the icj found against them, the icj found that the united states had to pay reparations to nicaragua, and essentially nothing came of it, because the united states is a permanent member of the security council, enforcement of icj decisions is the responsibility of the united nations security council, and because the the united states has its veto power and because us is obviously very strong ally of israel, it means that any real enforcement that could be taken to against israel to stop his genocide is essentially impossible, it's not going to happen, so really all we're looking at is a situation where yes, potentially the icj could find against israel, i wouldn't say
12:08 am
that's necessarily guaranteed, but even if it does, it doesn't actually mean the world is sudly suddenly going to come together through the united nations to force israel to stop. it's genocidal campaign, unfortunately that's just not the way that our international system works, which is completely rigged and which secures western imperial interests. um, i think the americans have what they call the hague invasion act, so if anybody member of the military forces or people in politics are convicted of having committed genocide, um, they can invade, hague and and release. um tarak, as a palestinian, what are your hopes uh as far as this genocide case is concern? um, well of course the the direct hope is that the provisional measures are are imposed upon israel, and i think i think i'm perhaps a little more hopeful um that there might be
12:09 am
quite a positive step uh because i think what we have in the in the western world is um at least the talk of of of even now you know. many of the many of the european countries have you know um have spoken about their commitment to the icj and to the un and i don't think i think it'd be very difficult for for most of the european countries including and and as well of course the us to continue their same support of israel if israel is seen as blatently breaking the recommendations of the aicj um or not the recommendations the orders of the icj um and so it could be it could... potentially be, i think quite a positive step. um, that's not to say, i don't believe that israel will stop the campaign, but what i do think is that it will perhaps make it undeniable, um, again, you know, going back to this idea of things becoming as clear as they can be, um, make it
12:10 am
undeniable that um, israel and the western world in fact are not committed to international law, they aren't committed to to the sanctity of international law that they keep reminding. rest of the world about indeed, so i think i think that's a very, very powerful um tool um that south africa is here activated um and i think it puts israel a bit of bind where i i mean maybe hopefully i'm you know best case scenario i guess israel is put between two situations, it either continues its genocide or salt on gaza and over time causes the loss of its international support of its international legitimacy and perhaps long-term not be very good strategy or it can stop it's assault on gaza um without achieving its own state aims in gaza and what would be seen you know perhaps by everyone as a military failure as a political failure um both situations are
12:11 am
you know yeah untenable for israel yeah speaking of western countries the head of the palestinian mission to the united kingdom huzam zumlad has expressed frustration over the uk. confused policy over palestine. addressing questions from reporters in london, he said there is lot of inconsistency and hypocrisy, because of which the uk is unable to provide global leadership needed to end the occupation of palestine. have listen. we want to see a uk policy that is consistent and clear, and we don't see that. on the one hand we hear the uk prime minister rishi sonak and others. saying that you know the icj has no mandate, israel's, the case against israel of genocide does not stand, but when they are asked, does israel violate international law, like only couple of days ago, in the parliament, they say, oh, we're not lawyers, we don't intervene, this has to
12:12 am
be left to the experts, this is the inconsistency, this is the double standards, this is the selectivity, this is the hypocrisy, also the... inconsistency in many other forms, only recently the uk government has announced a new policy, significant and welcomed that they will ban violent settlers from accessing the uk. this is the first time in 75 years the uk takes any step that has to do with sanctions, the first time, ever, yet, and we have said publicly and i repeat it here, that policy needs to be more comprehensive, because there is no such a thing as good settlers and bad settlers, all settlers. will not stop until the stop of the
12:13 am
aggression and the breaking of the siege against the palestinian people in the gaza strip and god is the main victor and he is the main supporter may yeman the free and proud and sovereign victory is for. yemen and all the free in this world, the statement issued by the last wednesday, so they curb public bodies here and perhaps others from divesting from these illegal settlements, from taking any step to actually mark that these the products of these settlements are illegal, it's such a it's such bell that... number one gives another layer of protection to the illegal settlement products, those who
12:14 am
work in settlements, illegal settlers, hu new level of protection, shielding. ironically, the government policy does not call for the sanctions on the settlement products and activities, transactions, so israel was unfortunately shielded by the first part, but they go even further to say, even if a government changes its policy, israel remains to be the exception. believ: further more, they erase any distinction between israel, the occupied territories and the golonites, they put it in one sentence, one paragraph, one item, as the exception, this is the inconsistency, where are you exactly? do you consider israel's occupation of the 1967 borders to be a military occupation and colonization? where are you exactly? tell you there is such inconsistent. in the uk policy that i as an ambassador here to my country
12:15 am
and for my people, i no longer understand if you ask me, what is the uk policy visa? head the palestinian mission to the uk, speaking there, and your reaction to what we heard there, especially you the focus on the words inconsistency and hypocrisy in the us, the uk's policy rather on the israel palestine question. "i think i think it's, you know, i couldn't agree more, um, it's a very, very good point, um, what we're seeing is total inconsistency, um, and sort of related to what we were talking about before, um, what we have is a position where israel, oh, sorry, israel and the uk um, pretend to to to to to have to have, to be principled and to follow international law and to maintain international law, and at the same time shielding." um like um hasan was saying the um in the illegal settlements, we have a
12:16 am
position where not only are they shielding them themselves, but they are actively stopping others from um bringing about um um sanctions and such against them, yeah exactly, um andar can i get you also to react to uh the comments that the palestinian ambassador made. there in in that press briefing? well, i have to say i very much feel usam zamlot's frustration and exasperation even at the hypocrisy and the inconsistency of uk policy when it comes to international law. of course the uk professes to be a country that supports international law, that supports international conventions and treaties, and at the same time is now promoting legislation in britain as hosan was mentioned. that would effectively stop the ability of public bodies from boycotting
12:17 am
israel, which was one of the biggest tools in the arsenal of the anti-apartide campaign against the apartide system in south africa, boycott, divestment and sanctions was one of the key elements and internationally that helped to bring down the apartized system in south africa and now essentially within britain that's being made unlawful a public level um so... so it is huge demonstration of uk, at the same time i kind of think that we need to also try to get beyond this argument, because we know that britain for many years has been completely. inconsistent and hypocritical when it comes to international law, it invaded iraq without any authorization from the united nations security council. it's engaged in numerous operations that are you know arguably unlawful. so we know that this is what britain does. i think what we need to be arguing for uh is for um britain to be also
12:18 am
held to account for its actions, because britain is not just some sort of neutral player, britain is active. now aiding and abeting, in my view, the genocide against the people of gaza, and britain, and the british government should also be held to account, and our correspondent who went to that pr press briefing uh communicated to me a lot of the journalists that were there were asking, speculating about the future of gaza, the post bombardment gaza, which is if i were to use the word ridiculous, ludicrous to be talking about that in the... middle of a genocide in in progress? your thoughts? definitely, definitely. think i think it's it's almost surreal to see people, um, people in the us and israel, believing they not only do they that they should decide for gaza, what what it should look like in the future, and and and the you know, it's as if palestinian self-determination is isn't even
12:19 am
something on the table, um, and i think it's the same mentality that's led us to where we are today. 'um, it's a mentality where palestinians don't have a right to decide for themselves where they you know how how they are governed, it's a principle, um, and we don't have, we aren't as palestinians, we aren't afforded the same rights that every other people on earth are, and if there are any differences between the different factions there, it'll have to be resolved by the palestinian themselves and not a solution to be imposed upon them from the outside and and and this fantasy that that even gaza could be controlled, i think i think is ridiculous um "we have we have seen how you know, i think unsustainable the occupation of the west bank has been um despite the fact that it's gone on for so long, you know there have been no major successes in placating the palestinian people in the west bank and the challenge in gaza will be demonstrably um larger and and yet we we it's almost as if
12:20 am
the the leaders are living an entirely different planet yeah where they ignore the genocide going on" and believe that they almost in a colonial mindset believe can can can tell what can tell these uncivilized people how to run themselves and and ignore the practical difficulties and the moral difficulties within such a position precisely fascinating so far. if you've just joined us, this is gaza under attack with me said burza where we take a deep dive into the news of and around the israeli atrocities against palestinians. now young people have played a pivotal role in the... new wave of support for palestine. at the most recent national demo held over the weekend here in london, i asked some of the youth in attendance why they were there and what message they wanted to send. i think my - most urgent demand is for leaders to be held accountable and responsible for their part in being complicit
12:21 am
in this genocide and ethnic cleansing and for immediate cease fire and an end to the ongoing air strike. and the bombing in gaza and also the mistreatment of palestinian people in general. echoing what my flight friend said beforehand, would be immediate cease fire. i think it's something that even when we see on social media, um, even like the journalists or the young press out there every time they do mention that they have show these videos, as he's fire is still something which is should be at the forefront of everyone's mind, and overall and like enter the occupation of palestine. i think that's ultimately what everyone everyone is wanting. we want immediate seesfire. to the occupation so i think it's really important to come here and to show support for issue that's been kind of silenced for quite quite a while um and i think with kind of social media and the presence of this of this and social media is kind of it's kind of become quite prominent issue especially among like young people so it's there's a lot of more awareness now and i think it's important to show support if you look around there's so
12:22 am
many people here i think it's impossible to ignore all the people in the streets or chanting the same things or want the same thing. "we want change and lots of people our age are being like killed and we should, we would hate if it happened to us, so we should represent those people. greek foreign minister, georgus gerapetritus has met with a jordanian counterpart aiman al safari in the capital aman. speaking to reporters a joint news conference, gara petritis expressed concern of the dire humanitarian situation in the gaza strip and the dangers of a region. we are profoundly concerned on many grounds today on the ongoing loss of civilian lives on the current. humanitarian situation that has reached devastating dimensions on the growing anxiety in the west bank, on the possibility of a crisis spill over in lebanon
12:23 am
and of course on the peak of tension in the red sea, which endangers the security of of navigation in a very crucial region. it is crucial that we all do everything in our power to deescalate this situation, we need to alleviate. the pain and the suffering of civilians in gaza, we must all do whatever we can to provide food supplies and medicaments, and of course we need to restore essential facilities and networks in gaza. further population displacement scenarios cannot be acceptable. amar and the question of escalation, this turning into a full fledged war regionally you have. the uk, us attacks on yemeni territory, you have the exchanges in southern lebanon and other moving parts in the region, how serious do you think um is
12:24 am
that thread of a regional war? well, i think that it's probably misplaced to be talking about the threat of a regional war, i think we're already in the midst of a regional war, i think that it's um also misplays to be talking about escalation, i think things have already escalated. a real really huge point. i don't think we should understate the nature the attacks that were led by the united states and britain against ansar allah in yemen. that was major escalation uh by western governments and we know that britain has been involved uh in prosecuting the war uh on gaza from the very beginning. it was reported that um sas uh troops were being deployed to assist the israel occupation forces, so i think that we're already in the midst of a regional war, it's just case of how much more it's going to heat up and whether there's a potential for it to
12:25 am
de-escalate, i don't think that it will deescalate unless israel completely abandons it stated objectives, which is to destroy hamas, which is never going to happen, it has to completely unilaterally withdraw from gaza, allowing masses of humanitarian aid and allow for reconstruction, and if that doesn't happen then i think the... only way is up frankly, i just think that um it's going to continue, i think that the potential for the northern front with lebanon, that escalating is very very high, and i think that for you, the risk of more actors within the region putting their cards more firmly on the table uh is also a very significant threat, but that's not to say that those actors aren't already involved at some level, exactly and finally uh tariq is is two young people, younger people, i should say in this discussion, um, how do you think, how have you view the action of the youth uh during
12:26 am
this unfolding genocide in in advocating for palestine? think i think the younger people today are feeling extremely disillusioned with the with the with the mainstream political narrative, the mainstream media and the so-called western world, um, i think, one the things that social media has allowed and the spread of of of new information and um unfiltered information has meant that many of the people in my age younger slightly older um get all their news from social media and what that has meant is um or at least lot of their news from social media and what has what that has meant is that they don't they cannot even fathm or or or um rationalize what israel is doing, what the us is doing, what the uk is doing, and so we feel truly that our government has not only refuse to represent us, but is going out of its way to
12:27 am
to prosecute us as young people, um, when we call for example from for for for drastic change, we are called anti-semitic, and when we call for um, you know, simple things like international law to be upheled, and... so we do feel like the the our governments simply you know are truly worlds away from from what from where we where we otherwise might have thought they are, and that's all the time we have for this segment, a big thank you to tarak othman and armar kosmi for their analysis and to you for watching us, we'll be back tomorrow with the latest news and analysis, make sure you tune in, until we meet again, continue to keep palestine in your heart. goodbye.

a plot hatched by zinus to occupy. to disintegrate and to plunder palestine. this documentary tells in five parts how the israeli regime kick-started its sinister project in palestinian lands through the gradual strategy of settling the so-called jewish colonies. enduring

and surviving the genocide of the century happening in the largest open air concentration camp on earth in gaza does not stop the afflicted people of palestine from remembering past massacers committed by the genocidal zinist regime. day of gaza, which was named by the islamic republic of iran on january 19, 2009, right after a 22 day of aggression against the gaza strip with 1500 people rose marters as a direct result of zionist billigerance. today we commemorate day of gaza as 70% of the strip is carpet bombed with us-made top notch laser guided death projectiles that has taken the lives of more than 23,00 civilians in less than 100 days of genocide. day of gaza this week on the midi stream.
