1:03 pm
well the us is really genocidal war in gaza continues for the 145th day with death doll nearing 30,000. the us president had few words to say about a truise deal that's being discussed, looking on some ice cream, he said that there will be atris by monday. well, this goes flat against. what hamas political bureau chief moheniya has said, and also the hamas rep in lebanon osama hamdan. in this edition of the spotlight we will look at the genocidal war and how nothing has prevented civilian killings from the icj to protest to a possible true deal, a genocide made possible by the us providing the israeli regime with bombs and missiles. first let me introduce our guests for this edition of the spotlight. john phoenix, journalist and international relations expert joins us from london. also joining us is nicholas davis,
1:04 pm
independent journalist and author who joins us from miami. well, welcome to you both. uh, if i may start with you, john phoenix, when we take a look at what's happening in gaza, it's quite incredible and shocking uh that we're approaching uh 30,00 in terms of the death toll, 145 days now, and just in the past 24 hours over 100 palestinians have been murdered. um, what do you think about? the fact that nothing is preventing the genocide from uh stopping, well just just make it clear that the the main factor of the support for the israeli army genocide in gaza is obviously the american government, if the united states wanted to end this massacar, want to end this genocide you only had to pressure the israelis and stop their... daily
1:05 pm
inition and daily support for the israelis in fact they the clear now from the reports that of even the from the last i think 26 of december till now israel did not after the cc stop killing the palestinians so the only brusher can actually stop designist entity killing more palestinians. is the is the american because in the other hand you have the neighboring arab regimes who is actually as clear now from what happening 145 days they are obviously american public to cannot take of any decision they fail even to to to actually smuggle not even deliver smuggle glass of water to the palestinians who are starving in gaza especially the north of gaza obviously no feed food at all people driving dead on
1:06 pm
the north because of the the lack of food and medicine and and and water, they starvation became wopen now in the hand of the israelies because they make it clear as one of their member of the parliament said if we start them they will be able to come and give us information about hamas so it's actually intent to start people to death so the the way out of this misory is only the americans the... the government was sponsoring this massacars, sponsoring the genocide. sure, sure. well, let's talk a little bit more on the humanitarian level, before we get into the american complicity, i should say, and nicholas davis, when you take a look at for example, the un organizations, um, you had a recent incident on february the 5th where uh, the israeli regime forces fired at the un convoy that was carrying vital supplies of food for the starving palestinians, um, and uh, at the same time the regime forces
1:07 pm
blocked these trucks and uh that has led many to say food is being used as a weapon of war. um so so much so that the the humanitarian organizations are saying we're not going to be able to function in the gaza strip. as as it is, it's been uh, it's been almost impossible. um, why do you think israel is using uh food as a weapon of war? i guess are talked about how it wants to extract information on hamas, but is that the only reason? well, well, no, of course not, and and i mean, this is, this is an integral part of why the icj uh, has essentially accepted that this is case of genocide, um, because clearly the the intent is to completely destroy gaza and kill thousands of civilians. this is not what the americans like to call collateral damage, the these are actually the targets, under whatever pretext the israelis
1:08 pm
come up with, the goal is to make gaza uninhabitable and to inflict so much death and destruction and... sha terror on the people of gaza that eventually israel will be able to push them out into egypt or just out into the desert, so so yeah, no, none of the pretexts cited um have any validity whatsoever, this is genocide, pure and simple. you talked about the us assistance, john phoenix, maybe you could expand... a little bit more about how vast uh this is, i mean we have at some point uh uh former or a pentagon spokesman said that the security assistance continues to arrive a near daily basis to the israeli regime um throughout this time the us is saying, not throughout this time really, but in the past month or so
1:09 pm
that it's telling it says it's telling israel to really watch out for the civilian casualties, but it continues to supply israel not just sporadically but almost a daily basis if not daily um how much of a contributing factor is that to the genocide taking place? well, from the beginning of genocide, from the october when the americans actually noted that the israel is killing civilians, they did not actually stop the israel's killing civilians, they actually denied the figures, if you remember biden said, i do not just believe hamas figures, this figures was coming from united nation and other independent organization who saying the civilian being targeted, houses been demolaged, children and women being killed, hundreds of kids under the rivers, so the americans knows that there is, when i say
1:10 pm
americans, mean the american government, they knows that they is targeting del civilians, that's explain why they, mean that's obviously explain why you have 8,800 women you know killed, 7000 children killed, so 75% the casuality in gaza, the are civilians and under the vetext of fighting hamas, there is no hamas to fight, i don't see the logic that israel is by buming houses and killing civilians, it's fighting hamas, 65% of the houses in gaza destroyed. 'm a total of 80%, the rest of the figure houses you cannot return to have to be demiliged and rebuilt, so the clear that the american government is not only aiding the part of that, because
1:11 pm
they are not only sending women's daily to the israel, they have actually storage in negative desert, which is been there for years and years the'. time the fort hamas in gaza, they attack the palestinians in gaza, they storage is full, but in this time the toll of the war it taking longer than 33 days last time or or 25 days, the time before, this now nearly six months, so the israelies need a supply and americans happy to supply them to slow palestinians, now you're talking about the issue of they've been attacking actually on the edges rafah, they killed people yesterday, the the bump houses rafah, so the mediating you that, no, no, they're stoping now, because of ramadan, you know, they're not attacking rafah, they're actually attacking houses in rafah, and the sad thing to see yesterday when the jordanian after all
1:12 pm
this pressure and be exposed, actually aiding the zionis and sending food, they dropped some some food yesterday and ended up in the sea, they... poor people want to the sea to to actually collected, they've been shot at by snipers, so you mentioned about the trucks, there is no need to see, there's no point sending a trucks to gaza, palestinians civil. it cannot reach it, there is never everywhere, this trucks had to be aided by international force to be able to uh deliver deliver this to the uh civilians, otherwise you can have food in the street and you cannot reach to it, sure, well let's talk about this self-imilation that has taken place in nicholas davis, which i'm sure you're aware of uh, when you take a look at what has happened, the depth of this is not really uh being reflected by us officials, especially the us president joe biden, i mean we're looking at. uh um aaron bushnell who gave up his life for the genocide and the slaughter that's taking place uh, but the
1:13 pm
fact that he did that um, in addition to the fact that he was a us military person um points to whether it the genocide has reached a degree where you have american public to actually be awakened to the point where one them, this uh brave aaron bushnel went and self-emulated and killed himself because of that, has awareness gotten to that point? yes, and and i would add first that um, the us role is not limited to providing weapons. um, the right at the beginning, they sent a us marine general james glynn who took part in the us, virtually genocidal destruction of mosul and before that of falluja in iraq, to help the israelis plan this whole operation, and there are us military personnel in israel
1:14 pm
continuing to do that, continuing to work with the israelis to help them to use these us weapons to kill more palestinians. i heard yesterday about a friend of a friend who works in florida here for a company called l3 harris who um his friend believes it is currently in israel. because l3 harris um helps to build the the so-called iron dome, israely and missile defense system, so there are american technicians in israel working to maintain the the weapons that are sold there, and there are intelligence officials and senior military officers helping israel to plan and target these weapons on civilians. in gaza now when it comes to uh aaron bushnell, since october, i believe, he he had
1:15 pm
been under orders um to be prepared to deploy to the middle east or to israel, so he he explicitly uh, you know, was was implicated, the the the air force unit that he works with was on deck to... to be sent to the middle east to take part in this war, um, so he probably more than most americans uh felt complicit, because actually in fact he is implicit, his the air force that he is part of is part of the war, and um, so, but i mean, i, i thought his statement on facebook before he did. was just incredibly eloquent, he said, he said, how many times have we all
1:16 pm
asked ourselves, what would we do if you know we were alive at the time of of slavery of african americans in in america, or if we were, in in germany taking part in genocide or or or hearing about the genocide that that their country was committing, and he said, well we don't have to wonder anymore, he said, every one of you can now answer the question, what are you doing, while your country is committing genocide? and the answer is obviously for most americans, it is little or nothing or even even actually supporting it, so that is that is the answer to the question, and i mean i had a conversation with somebody yesterday. who who who who talked about how terrible trump is, and i said, well, you know, biden, biden is
1:17 pm
clear, how can, how can anybody be worse than a president who is committing genocide? well, we're looking at another instant that we can make a comparison here, john phoenix to go along the same topic, and uh, that is uh, back in 2003 where you had rachel cory, i don't know if you recall what she did at that point, and i'm going to refer to what... said then, i think it's a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. i don't think it's an extremist thing to do anymore. fast forward to 2024 with aron bush now, compared to what people have been experiencing in palestine. at the hands of their colonizers, this is not extreme at all. you have these two instances happened, but yet us politicians, joe biden, um, you know, he's not made really any, not really, he hasn't made any reaction or statements on what has happened. um, why do you think uh, this has been the case, and why do you think all these years you still are getting the silence from the us government on
1:18 pm
people who are sacrificing themselves for causes that they believe in like this? well if you look at the case of rishi when she was in gaza the way she was killed that she was tried to stop a buldoser destroying house and the driver actually drove over her kill it was clear that she was shouting making clear that she's in front of him, he ignore here warning to him and managed to kill her, now the not only that the sold. her, when the family decided to take the army to court, the american officials was siding with the israelis against an american citizen, you know, it take maybe six seven meetings with the their semester in in in tel aviv, and it
1:19 pm
was clear that the american officials especially from the american embassy taking the side of the israelis, "the only crime she committed that she tried to protect a family where she stayed actually having to stay in in few houses in gaza to help the palestinian refugees and that's what happened so obviously the american government had a barage of threat and pressure from the zlavi not to side with the victims side by israel and that's what happened it was the clear that ibak was working hard." to be sure that the uh israel will not be indiced in that crime sure, well we we are looking now at uh what's been coming out uh from paris, the news that has now been uh um spread in the past couple days regarding a possibility of a truth which the're uh differing signals the divisiveness between what the americans have
1:20 pm
said even uh the qataris and what hamas and the resistance have... said um nicholas david, i'd like to get your reaction to it, because on the one hand uh joe biden, and i can't believe that they actually uh, i mean it doesn't look good when the president is uh is uh looking ice cream and answering reporters talking about palestinians and it just doesn't look good, um correct me if i'm wrong, but he said that there's a deal on monday and yet you have hamas that came out hours later practically and said that there's still large gaps main kind of the same. type of reaction that hamas had to the previous truths, tell us what you think about what's out there regarding this uh so-called truce that's in the works? yes, absolutely, i mean this this has been going on for weeks uh that the us um will will come out with saying that you know there is some sort of deal on the table, um, but when you when you look at the
1:21 pm
details uh, it it's clear that that that... that there isn't and that that you know, i mean essentially they they are trying to impose on hamas an agreement in which uh hamas would release the israeli hostages in exchange for a temporary truth and then the the bombing and israeli assault would recommence um and clearly... "i mean hamas has clearly rejected that over and over and over again, and and hamas demands what the whole world is demanding, which is an actual ceasefire, an end to the genocide, and i mean the us is complicit also in in fostering viw
1:22 pm
of this whole crisis that um, that implies..." reciprocity between um the actions of hamas on october the 7th and um and israel's um israel's genocide and war crimes and in fact the secretary general of the un was absolutely explicit um in introducing one of the one of the un security council sessions uh where the us which the us eventually vetoed, and he said, yes, we condemn what hamas did on october the 7th, but israel's obligations under inter national humanitarian law are independent of whatever happened on october the 7th, and they do not depend any kind of reciprocity. we are
1:23 pm
talking about enforcing international law, enforcing the genocide convention. it does, you know, in terms of stopping genocide, it actually does not matter what hamas it, because they do not provide, what hamas did does not provide a... cannot provide legitimate pretext for genocide, right? well, it seems like throughout the questions that i've asked and the responses that i've gotten, um, we can't escape uh the role that the us has played john phoenix in this, and the us itself was focus of the most recent g20 meeting that was held in brazil, so much so that the brazilian president came out, talked about the us role there, and actually then uh made the focus of the g20 in some sense. the reform of the un, because uh the brazilian president and uh um other officials that were present there aside from looking down at the us have said this is where the un
1:24 pm
has failed, it needs to be reformed. we've heard that before about the un being reformed, but here is a clear example of how bad things can go. what do you think about nothing to have at this point prevented the genocide uh from stopping? well, can i just highlight one thing before i answer the question, you sound like little bries about the icy cream incident, you know, i mean you talking to about a president who is actually forget what he ate in the morning, when he came to the media and talking about genocide, he knows what the issue, killing civilians, starvation, and he's eating ice cream which is insult, that remind me of the when i watch the general list and have the the nazi officers attacking old lady and the other officers laughing, you know, this is really disgusting to see a president of united
1:25 pm
states talking about issue which is killing genocide, starvation and eating icy cream, that is really a shame, but do not really obviously blame him, mean he just mentioned that he made mitran in the conference in france with mitran died 30 years ago, call cc prison mexico, so do not blame h for that please, yeah, in regard to brazil, not only brazil, even algeria table decision, motion that this genocide should be stopped, you know, because there's no end to this cycle, israelis have a free hand, they know that the americans will v to any decision, now talking about the reform of united nations. and i mean anybody can ask the same question is how come 30 countries, 40, 120 countries would take decision to stop a genocide and then one
1:26 pm
country can override this decision, surely we need to have a reform where other countries who are not sitting there like sheeps, you know, and four countries in control of the united nation, you know, so it is really time for reform and time for other countries to have it say on international affairs. okay, thank you very much, we're going to have to head in there, uh, let me thank john phoenix, journalist and international relations expert, and thank you nicholas davis, independent journalist and author from miami, with that we come to an end for this edition the spotlight from the team, it's goodbye. information about palestine abounds on social networks, many times without context. they do
1:27 pm
not allow us to go deeper and understand all the dimensions of a catastrophe that is dragging on for centuries. daniel hardway, chile and of palestinian origin opens a window to palestine to understand in depth the present cause of the palestinian people, exploring its history and future prospects. do not miss a window to palestine.
