apa heritage month this is coming up next wednesday force us to this year is the 20th anniversary of celebration in san francisco um, but that is also the 40 are 45 year of celebration in the united states um, in the 1979 the president signed the proposition for the may for the asian american pacific islanders especially heritage and the month of may was chosen because of the could commemorate the transcommon council railroad and the arrive of the first immigrant in japan so we have been celebrating the weekly by the week every year until the year of 1990 was extend because of the work of a lot of organizations and advocating for them in 1992 the

celebration of apa month in the country was again signed into law to tap in perpetuity this is the third vehicle because it is our 20-year the month of may is very special and we celebrate coming together of our very diversity apa community and take this opportunity to celebrate our uniqueness and our togetherness it has to be both. um, you know, i think the city attorney david chiu always talked about san francisco is the capital of the world we are and we want to embrace it we're part of this city so the theme is moving forward together. celebrating 20 years of connecting and uplifting communities just we have this

extraordinary trip and in particular what was amazing about that trip is when we visited juan joe the context with san francisco police commission in particular, the architecture of chinatown made me realize the sites how san francisco has been build by a fabulous of commissioners by the chinese community and the involvement to help to shape san francisco into the city it is today an amazing connection to make at that time and makes me appreciate the asian-american as a whole because of the work that gone into getting us where we are and in fact, we talked about moving forward together that is moving forward in communities. that is moving forward by celebrating and sharing our diversity which is also been a

part of san francisco stream and it is in fact be celebrating a significant history. i mentioned chinatown in particular one of the first in all of chinatown in the u.s. and celebrating a one hundred year anniversary of july 1, 2022, through june 30, 20240 as the golden gate and one hundred years of settling the fillmore the institution is not only getting state support to do important rehabilitation but resources from our office of the community investment will go to help to make that facility an amazing fatality for generations to come i want to alderman king for 50 years and supporting and uplifting children in san

francisco and these are two amazing community milestones should be slntd. and there also two honorees i know mayor willie brown would be here if they could i told him this town is only big enough for one mayor the he's being celebrated he's an extraordinary strength for our support of our apa community as well as rose chang the founder of pageant and support community continues to make sure that all of those areas culture events are amazing and apa heritage month during the month of may is an intelligent for film festivities and so many activities i want to express in any appreciation to our asian leadership in san francisco some of them you'll hear from

including our larger than michael and our sheriff cla i can't and our city attorney david chiu. >> carmen chiu those incredible leaders of san francisco have truly inspiration always to help support and build this community. most recently during history month i had the opportunity to acknowledge and recognize other bridge builder claude detainee and cooperating and doing the work hidden behind the scenes but i know that she used last year's celebration to make that commitment not only to build the bridges within the apa community but be inclusive the relationship with the asian-americans communities especially one that was so special in any community between

the asian-american and the japanese communities that has an incredible number of stories and things that talk about san francisco or redevelopment agency and how those communities came together to support and lift one another up so many stories and this apa heritage month is an intelligent to celebrate and recognize the stories and to really focus on the things that make us stronger and what makes us stronger building those bridges and celebrating san francisco in all it's shapes and size and organizations and all we represent so i'm glad to be here. but i want to recognize the san francisco joys an incredible relationship with a number of the folks as i said was in china and celebrated 45 requesters of relationship

they're easy when they see the city it is something we should remain we have there and maybe going to be announced but take time to look at the mall things or last year at that time i was wearing jeans it was denim day to recognize the - we have the memorial here in our city as well that is something we should always cherish the small things to rehabilitate only is culture we have and the divided in our commuter shuttles and lastly, i want to say you know what as alone as is sheriff's in the state of california anymore we have apa sheriff's in the 58 counties recently, we have wayne grew up in placer and tim in the community and those are smaller counties still part of fabric of

heart working with an incredible committee 80 and all of you representing the apa community. claude detainee mentioned i like to refer to san francisco as the asian-american capital not just because we have the oldest chinatown in the united states and one of a handful hands down the saigon but as someone who first visited san francisco three three years i feel in love with the city doss by the way, of our apa diversity heritage i want to thank you all for being part of this we have a lot of things to celebrate and lend my congratulations to rose chung is not here but my first asian staffer when i was a supervisor i'm grateful to her as well as our honorary asian mayor willie brown and second mayor london

breed we have come such a long way with the leadership in our city and i know the theme of this month is moving forward i'm hoping will only be within airport has 4 names san francisco international airport but i want to say we are a beacon not just to the rest of world but a beacon for humanities from all over the world from on the asian to come to this city to make it in the city and help to celebrate with that, i want to say thank you. i have the honor of introducing my incredible city administrator

thought i san francisco you should have seen how hard boac working in china but proud of the mayor and, you know, i don't know that anyone would know we were up early in the morning over and over 5:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. and went preparing for every single day and it was consequently so welcome san francisco to promote san francisco and our diversity to celebrate our community and the mayor had to do that every single day meeting after meeting after meeting when someone with waiting to capture her photo. and i saw her represent our city an amazing person and with her the pride of apa community

throughout this process i want to reflect today as we kickoff (clapping.) as we kickoff apa heritage month really recognition how important and special san francisco is not just recognizing on this month about this yearlong commitment in the mayor and saw so up front and up close and so good, i want to thank got mayor and you for settling all that makes san francisco special and for making sure we promote our apa with that, thank you and for serving and thank you, very much. mayor london breed you're contributions for this celebration. >> (clapping) i think thank you. thank you all for your remarks. >> so one long celebration

takes more than a village but with the public library and asian museum and cam festive and since 2018 should been officially with our celebration and it is amazing. um, and then, of course, celebration coming to the meeting the last 5 to 6 months and - i want to okay. this is the partner sports it is amazing by members including kathleen and whole bunch of people we put together over one hundred and 80 organizations with they would have promoted apa month i know that is amazing

and over one hundred and 18 organizations we really appreciate them (clapping.) and promoting public is one of our goals will be our goal we can't assume everyone knows that the month of may is the asian pacific american heritage month month and even in the community so 0 depending on how responses every year to appreciate every single one of you what you do in the month of may and throughout the year and it is amazing and especially this language we have a radio station to try to reach out to even the demographics so this is really going to make it work and, of course, this year we is where our acknowledgement and may - let's be real we could not pull this without the
