5:03 am
>> good afternoon everybody. good afternoon! first of all, let me say welcome to mayor gong and his entire delegation and thank you to our consul general who consistently is on the for front insuring that the u.s. china relationships remain strong and in tact. president she, visited san francisco as many know back in apec and highlighted the people, the people relationships that are important to insuring that our countries and our people are thriving, but more importantly, the san francisco vision. we know that san francisco is a gateway to the asian pacific and what happens in our city changing our entire counry and the world, so those people to people relationships are extremely important. it is why it is my honor to welcome so
5:04 am
many of you here to city hall to celebrate 45 years of the san francisco and shanghai sister city relationship. [applause] [speaking chinese]
5:05 am
[applause] >> mayor gong, we are very fortunate in san francisco to have a very thriving chinese community in our city, and in fact, what you see here today is a representation of business leaders, of those who own their own small businesses, of commissioners, of people who work in the tech industry, of folks who established not just
5:06 am
political organizations, but non profit organizations that are helping to make a difference in the communities all over san francisco. gegraphcally many joining us today live in all parts of san francisco. chinatown is a important part of the community, but there are people representing the west side of the city including taraval, richmond and innersunset and various neighborhoods that make up the fabric of our city. [speaking chinese]
5:07 am
this is community that is not also just involved in the work that they do personally, but so many of them give back to organizations that help to make the community better. i'm looking around and if i start naming names i might get in trouble, but all most every person here is not only successful as maybe an attorney, a business owner, or a publisher or a newspaper, but they are public servants serving the city and county of san francisco as commissioners, but also serving on the board of directors for a number of organizations that
5:08 am
help to support and uplift so many people throughout san francisco, including our young people and our seniors. [speaking chinese]
5:09 am
today, as we sign the memorandum of understanding to recommit ourselves after an historical 45 year relationship, it is important for us to highlight the specific things that we will focus on to renew that commitment. now, when this agreement was signed 45 years ago, at that time, technology was not what it is today and we are excited to really focus on the need to continue to develop our relationships around technology, sustainability, and the environment, and in highlights that people to people relationship insuring there are exchanges between our student populations, including our students who are both in high school and
5:10 am
college. in fact, because that relationship, we will be sending 10 public high school students to shanghai during the month of july to continue to grow and develop the extraordinary relationship that is existed for the past over past four decades. [applause] [speaking chinese]
5:11 am
you will be hearing from her in just a moment, but i want to take this opportunity to truly thank daphne for her extraordinary work with shanghai sister city and all she did to make our trip to shanghai success and make this trip in our relationship and the signing of the mou success as well. [applause] [speaking chinese]

5:14 am
>> [speaking chinese] >> honorable mayor breed, consul nob ladies and gentlemen , good afternoon. >> [speaking chinese] >> gives me great pleasure to lead delegation to san francisco. one month after mayor breed's visit to shanghai. the moment we arrived here, the very attractive scenery of the city
5:15 am
and inviting atmosphere make us feel very homecoming so on behalf of the shanghai municipal people government i extend greetings to community in san francisco and also want to thank the san francisco government for the arrangement and hospitality. >> [speaking chinese] >> we often say the more friends, the closer they get. in the san francisco is shanghai first sister city in the united states and we carried active and extensive collaboration and in this process over the years as we learn from each other, we grow together too.
5:16 am
>> [speaking chinese] >> a theme of our era. as we know san francisco, has strong economgic technological power and one of the world's major technology, business and cultural centers rchlt shanghai is china biggest economic powerhouse and striving to make the city is a international economic, financial, trade, shipping invasion center.
5:17 am
we accelerated at efforts to turn shanghai into a metropalist with worldwide impact. >> [speaking chinese] >> with signing of this new mou we hope we can enhance our cooperation in economy and trade, culture and education to arrive a new chapter of our friendship. >> [speaking chinese] >> i wish san francisco a very bright future and i also wish that the friendship between our two cities is strong and blended as the golden gate bridge. thank you.

>> thank you! [applause] >> thank you very much mayor gong. it is new my pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce consul general zang. he is a advocate and friend to our city and played a crucial role in fostering diplomatic relationships between our city and countries and truly understand the importance of people to people exchanges. >> [speaking chinese]
5:19 am
>> consul general. >> thank you so much for your kind words. dear mayor breed, dear mayor gong, madam [indiscernible] dear friends, good afternoon. it is my great honor to join you attending this soon to be signing ceremony. san francisco and shanghai were the first major chinese and american cities to enter the sister city relationship. [indiscernible] a lot has been accomplished. with the signing of the mou for a new round of cooperation, i think we can have a lot more to look forward to. the better is yet to come. san francisco is also where san francisco vision was developed. as a result of the successful
5:20 am
summit between president--and president biden. when the vision is formulated it is up to all of us to take action to translate san francisco vision into reality and i think both mayor breed and mayor gong have set very good examples for us by exchanging visits within a month. mayor breed was in shanghai last month and this month we welcome mayor gong to san francisco. i think this is very meaningful action to turn the vision into reality and to follow through on what our two presidents agreed. i really hope more chinese and american mayors will follow their example. the more visits take place, the better our relationship. before i conclude, i want to say, two years ago today, i started my
5:21 am
journey to san francisco to take my position as chinese consul general. over the past 2 years i worked hard and i have gone through challenges, so i like to take this opportunity to express my heartful felt gratitude to mayor breed, city hall, people represented here from all walks of life being in san francisco. thank you for your support. my colleagues and i and the consulate are committed and will double our efforts to make our relationship better and stronger. thank you. >> thank you. it is now my pleasure to introduce daphne fang, who is the chair of our sister city committee. she has been tirelessly working to
5:22 am
bring us all together as part of the process of the mou which you will witness very very soon, but she has been really an advocate and a friend and as mayor mentioned, has worked very hard to support all our efforts. daphne, thank you so much and please a round of warm welcome for daphne fang. [applause] [speaking chinese]
5:23 am
[applause] >> thank you. thank you miriam. i congratulate consul general for your anniversary. thanks for all your great work you have bring to san francisco in the two country relationship. [speaking chinese]

5:25 am
>> as part of the gift you give us, was the 10 high school students to participate in summer and you heard from our mayor, in the last four weeks we made that happen and they will go in july to visit shanghai. >> [speaking chinese] >> this will pave the way for enhance the cultural understanding power of friendship across the board in
5:26 am

5:29 am
5:30 am
>> alright. good morning everyone and welcome to wtrt in san francisco. [applause] and it is customary for us, we will bless this house with scripture and prayer. this morning we are reading from psalm 71, verses 20 and 21. you made me see troubles, many in bitter, you will restore my life again from the depth of the earth. you will again bring me up. you will increase my honor and
5:31 am
comfort me once more. may the lord--all mighty word. amen. can we bow? farther we come to you on this day lord thank you for this glorious day and the opportunity to serve you and you alone, lord. lord, jesus, you alone fully know what goes on in our hearts and minds and i prayer you protect all those on this day. i bless this house on this day and bless those that serve the women that come into this building. bless those women and lead and direct in the way you want them to go. most of all father, i want to prayer for those women out there lost and confused and can't find they way. let the women here be a example to them so they can see the sermon you are teaching to them right now, lord. also heavenly father pray our
5:32 am
leaders especially our mayor who continuously lead the city and the way so i pride you guide her and direct her and lead her in the way you want her to go. father, may be do all these things in the mighty name of jesus christ we pray, amen. to get this started, the first person i will introduce and the only person that is going to speak right now is the director of this program, from positive direction equals change, mrs. rena wave. [applause] >> so, i just are want to say welcome teerfb everyone here today. thank you may frr coming. thank you chief. thank you to aaron, to cedrick and creg. thank you to everyone that is here right now. we really appreciate you guys coming to support us, because us women we
5:33 am
struggle and we need to know that we can stay sober and we can do this program and it isn't easy for us. thank you to shawna. shawna, where you at? what would i do without shawna? thank you to shawna for everything she brought. [applause] yes. yes. yes. when she looks like she isn't working she is working. i love shawna. thank you so much again to the chief and the mayor for being here, and thank you guys for coming. thank you. [applause] >> we supposed to do things in proper order and i had order but something came to me squl told me, do it now. so, first, i am going to introduce our honorable mayor london breed first, but also, just something that hit my heart
5:34 am
about it. the first thing i just want to say, i have never met a person who is so diligent at what she does and we always wear t shirts saying no days off and her life is no days off in running this city. the other thing is the way she cares about each individual person that is in this city, and a lot of people dont know that and don't recognize it, because one thing as a mayor you have to show a strong face to the public to let them know they are secure, but what she does behind the scenes is what a people dont recognize. i'm introducing her now as the mayor, our honorable mayor, london breed. before we do that, before we do this, i wanted to do this from my heart and for people to see this every time wem xhn come in the building.
5:35 am
i ask, can you please take that off? mayor we did this in honor of all the women. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, honorable mayor london breed! [applause] >> first of all, let me give honor to god and pastor cedrick to rena and to all the incredible women and folks who are part of her house. thank you for continuing to support and uplift and be a blessing to so many people who are in need of support without judgment. and so many of you, you know i grew up in the city and many of you know my family.
5:36 am
you know my family, you know my sister and my struggles and challenges and you know i was raised by grand mother. in fact, i won't get into the specifics of what happened, but the fact is, i had a grand mother. i didn't have-never new my biological father. there was challenges with my mom, and i had a grand mother, but not everybody has a grand mother to raise them and take care of them through the storm and are through the struggles, and this city talks about the most vulnerable and being a beacon of hope and light and in fact, so many people who grew up here, who may have lost their way at one point, also did not receive the kind of support and services that they so desperately needed and deserved. what we have been doing in the past couple years, because of the work and the leadership of positive
5:37 am
direction equals change, we have been changing what this city does and what the city invests in, and specifically, the needs of the people that are struggling and getting to a point where there are finally the kinds of dollars invested into programs that are actually effective. abstinence based solutions that are effective. the city was not doing its part, and the programs that positive direction equal change were providing were actually helping people that i know and love and grew up with in this city. before that, it was a struggle and very uncertain. we so far ined over $20 million in 7 abstinence based programs, including housing. [applause] so we not talking about it, we
5:38 am
being about it. and here we are at her house, because women are a lot different, and have different unique needs, and in some cases, children and wanting a opportunity to reconnect in a positive loving environment with supportive service, child care, all the things necessary to not only help that individual, but wrap around that individual's family. her house started with 19 beds, which helped how many people, cedrick so far? >> 240 something people. >> helped them through housing, opportunities and basically exit her house into a situation where they can now live on their own, take care of themselves and take care of their families and still have a network of community to support and uplift them during the challenging times. we are extending this program now to 39
5:39 am
beds. [applause] and that's what today is about. working together to provide more opportunities and going from 18 months of a commitment to 2 and a half years to really make sure that people have more time to transition. meeting people where they are. because it is not easy and the city is not easy. it is required hard decisions and hard investments, because we hear about vulnerable populations and the challenges, but often times, the people who are at the forefront of doing this work, as much as we appreciate it, they don't always understand and know the struggles, and her house represents people who have been in this struggle, who are doing this work every day, who not only have to work on their sobriety and work on their challenges and their life, but they are helping
5:40 am
others. this is not just a program. this is a family. this is a family of people who when you are down and out you got somebody to call. you got somebody to argue with too. but you got somebody to hug! you got somebody who understands! you got somebody to love, you got somebody to uplift you and that's why we are here today. because, we need to make sure that in our recovery response in the city, there is not a one size fits all. there is not just your way or the highway. there is always that makes sense for a individual who's going through who knows what. you dont know what somebody's struggle is and what they might need and that is why her house is so important, because again it folks on the needs of women, the unique needs of women that
5:41 am
are a lot different then others. i appreciate being here so much and seeing like, the women who are here who work here, who live here, who will have a opportunity to grow and to thrive and to live their best lives. and that is because of positive direction equal change, but also because of adult probation and the work we do with them. because of west side and the department of public health. we have to make sure that all these organizations are working together and they are working together because i say so. [applause] you know, leading a city is a hard thing. making investments in things that are not traditional investments in the city has been a hard thing, but when i see the results of someone's life being changed and the fact and i tell so many people who are a part of this recovery community, you all are living
5:42 am
for those who didn't make it. you all are the example and we are so proud and grateful that you are courageous enough to not only your share your stories but continue to continue in your journey of sobriety. it is blesting to be here and see your faces and see how you are living your best lives and i will always as mayor do everything i can to make sure the programs that are provided that help to support and uplift people not just enable people, uplift and help people change their lives that those are prioritized in this city, so thank you so much and congratulations. [applause] >> alright. thank you mayor. next we bring to the stage from probation department, chief crystal turlock.
5:43 am
[applause] >> good afternoon everyone. so hard to come after madam mayor, but just wanted to recognize the commitment that we have with craig and cedrick and positive directions. the department of public health and madam mayor, it is such a honor to be working with you as women empowered to create resource s and housing and programs and opportunities for ort women. it is so powerful to be here with you today, so inspired by you. i'm a single mom and i work very hard in my work. i can't make it happen without community, and here we created community for all of the women here who are embarking on this new journey of their lives. you all deserve a opportunity to live your most incredible life and this program is one step to doing
5:44 am
that, so thank you. recovery works and we need to make more programs just like this. thank you. [applause] >> alright. that concludes our program. we going to take the mayor on a quick tour and thank everyone for coming. appreciate you and you can send the women. thank you. [applause] >> shared spaces have transformed san francisco's adjacent sidewalks, local business communities are more resilient and their neighborhood centers are more vibrant and mildly. sidewalks and parking
5:45 am
lanes can be used for outdoor seating, dining, merchandising, and other community activities. we're counting on operators of shared spaces to ensure their sites are safe and accessible for all. people with disabilities enjoy all types of spaces. please provide at least 8 feet of open uninterrupted sidewalk so everyone can get through. sidewalk diverter let those who have low vision navigate through dining and other activity areas on the sidewalk. these devices are rectangular planters or boxes that are placed on the sidewalk at the ends of each shared space and need to be at least 12 inches wide and 24 inches long and 30 inches tall. they can be on wheels to make it easy to bring in and out at the start and the end of each day. but during business hours, they should be stationary and secure.
5:46 am
please provide at least one wheelchair accessible dining table in your shared space so the disability people can patronize your business. to ensure that wheelchair users can get to the wheelchair accessible area in the park area, provide an adequate ramp or parklet ramps are even with the curb. nobody wants to trip or get stuck. cable covers or cable ramps can create tripping hazards and difficulties for wheelchair users so they are not permitted on sidewalks. instead, electrical cables should run overhead at least ten feet above sidewalk. these updates to the shared spaces program will help to ensure safety and accessibility for everyone, so that we can all enjoy these public spaces. more information

>> once i got the hang of it a little bit, you know, like the first time, i never left the court. i just fell in love with it and any opportunity i had to get out there, you know, they didn't have to ask twice. you can always find me on the court. [♪♪♪] >> we have been able to participate in 12 athletics wheelchairs.

they provide what is an expensive tool to facilitate basketball specifically. behind me are the amazing golden state road warriors, which are one of the most competitive adaptive basketball teams in the state led by its captain, chuck hill, who was a national paralympic and, and is now an assistant coach on the national big team. >> it is great to have this opportunity here in san francisco. we are the main hub of the bay area, which, you know, we should definitely have resources here. now that that is happening, you know, i i'm looking forward to that growing and spreading and helping spread the word that needs -- that these people are here for everyone. i think it is important for people with disabilities, as well as able-bodied, to be able to see and to try different sports, and to appreciate trying different things.
5:50 am
>> people can come and check out this chairs and use them. but then also friday evening, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., it will be wheelchair basketball we will make sure it is available, and that way people can no that people will be coming to play at the same time. >> we offer a wide variety of adaptive and inclusion programming, but this is the first time we have had our own equipment. [music] >> my name is lana. i am part owner of the excelsior coffee. my roll with excelsior coffee is pretty much the [indiscernible] i do a lot of the back-end operating procedures and a lot of customer front facing, a lot of customer outreach, naerbd outreach, but for the most part the coffee is it driving force of the community. i have been here in the excelsior district for 11 years.
5:52 am
the idea behind excelsior coffee spouted 6 years ago out of the need for community space and coffee. excelsior coffee to me is a cornerstone of the neighborhood. next to this iconic mural on excelsior along with the legacy businesses. we decided that this corner of san francisco on the southeast side of the mission is the place we like to be. i know you see a lot of eththetics of motorcycles behind us. a lot of people ask, what's up with the motorcycles behind you? motorcycle and classic cars are a big yite of our upbringing so the idea was to connect to this neighborhood from classic cars to low riders to motorcycles and my husband is is a high school teacher that teaches
5:53 am
automotives and history. we love the history of motorcycle engineer and design. for us it was more like a talking point and connection. honoring that and that is also the driving force between who we are and the make-up. i think what separates from other coffee shops is that, we are serving a community that has been here for a decade before us, and i think it is really special that there is a vortex of non english speaking communities here. between my husband and i, we represent many cultures. i'm [indiscernible] he is black, his mexican and through our cultures is how we connect with people in the excelsior. to speak their languages, and i think honoring our culture background through coffee and pastry.
5:54 am

5:59 am
and of course having paper tree. it is grit. >> during the pandemic i wanted do something to make a statement to help combat the asian hate that was prevalent at that time. and so i put a call out to have a thousand hearts. this is a spin on the tradition of holding 1,000 cranes when you have a wish. well, a thousand cranes does not make a statement enough why not change it and a call for a thousand hearts? i created a website dedicated to the project. a video and fold heart instructions. people sent them in the first mont was 1,000 hearts. they kept coming in. and the next goal was 7, 698, which was the total number of case of reported hate by the ap i website. those were the reported case of hate. there are more not reported.
6:00 am
that became the new goal. we achieved 2 months later. the hearts were coming in it it is a big project, we have it part of our store. anyone can come and fold an easy heart. keeping that part of the japanese tradition of this in that way here in japantown is pretty special. its great.
