going to be doing a lot of work my dear and commission the good news is the rewarding work san francisco is a very in fact, here in chinatown a very tense and irish environment and requires a lot of changes and technical scopes to get to a place of yes quo, continue to work and build for housing to change our roads and transportation and infrastructure to make sure that people are able to move around the city sufficiently by takes a special kind of person for a commitment to san francisco we're at and willie playground why is that to sufficient in light of this swearing in? well, that is particular playground and clubhouse was opened to 2021 after the renovation. and during that minded had to under going
4:03 am
an extensive progress and progress for the arts commission specific design and guess who served on the time when only one playground. >> no other than lydia she was responsible for (clapping.) helping to insure that it wasn't about testing the box and approve a design but how this playground and clubhouse fit in the fabic of chinatown and people that live here and play and a make it for enjoyable this playground clubhouses houses is maintained by c y c thank you for hovtd this day (clapping.) so almost full circle because lydia has a professional background but she also hat not
4:04 am
only concerns on is arts commission to make sure that those projects are responsible for the community they impact but served as a historic preservation commissioner and made a lot of hard decisions about the architecture and whether we approve something or not and went on to serve on the san francisco sfmta board responsible for muni and our infrastructure and all the times on the commissions held down and day job as an architect and has her own firm and does so many different things and more importantly she elevates the conversation with the quality of her work and compassion and understanding how that works into the community she agreed to
4:05 am
work in the planning commission i was thrilled i know should you would bring that compassion and enjoy serving to the planning commission so we can get the job done and reduce the numbers of complaints from the public (laughter). >> so lydia. thank you very much for you're willing thinksness to serve and the excitement about three strollers opportunity have a number of commissioners and community stakeholders one of the elected reporterer joaquin thank you for joining us here and have a lot of work to do in the city and ultimately have a huge responsibility but we think about affordability fooblths comes with the decisions especially in planning do get the job to build for housing and have infrastructure on the roads to make it a safe place to 40 for to move around and one as

mark young, jennifer and mega and shout out to our former police thank you for being such a long term leader (clapping.) i got a lot of planning departments top docks you might want to identify i wass or i don't see david hoe. so this place is special to me because it was my first time i felt i might get fired if i speak up in the arts commission we should not dictate a choice of color for the community will that is not our community; right? make sure we had a community outreach
4:13 am
let the community people pick in their choice of color we chinese are not - so we need to make sure that we are every time we make a decision process we need to do a culturely appropriate way to reach out for the community. because vibrant communities are in a healthy city. and i didn't get fired i bounce around so but through that i learned a lot from all of you, you and also see director heinecke schneider and miriam and i'm going to have to keep on shout out to the top dogs i'll working hard with you for 0 forever long i can handle (laughter) i spent hundreds of thousands of
4:14 am
hours sitting on the hearing and seeing none, and gave architect talking about our history and engaging in communities meetings about the streets and public health in our city and learned that from passed harry chuck how he's found out the playground was going to turn into an 8 or 9 story particular by a private developer with that history i see a pattern what we can do better we shall have a respect among our community and the governing agencies and have a equitable representation in our government. as a planning commissioner i will cherish the
4:15 am
lessons from your history and embrace our culture and our community shall make that better and safer and important sustainable environment and economy in san francisco. i want to see our young families and children feel safe they, plan their roots and live in san francisco. i like to see more of our aging juniors and veterans able to live in san francisco with dignity and grace and make sure we have a practical and finn feasible pipeline of equitable and transit-oriented housing development. >> i know a midst full (clapping.) kudos to sfgovtv and thank you, jeff our knowledge environment

4:18 am
whether the sees at the castro theatre were historic or not we think she made the right decision she's compassionate about san francisco and great experience and a perfect fit for the planning commission so welcome home to the planning commission we look forward to spending my hours with you in the public arguing about the decks he arguing about the more important things to build more housing and lydia knows more than anyone we need to do for housing and maintain the neighborhoods and character and culture but need to grow and would more housing i know that lydia gets that so thank you for serving and thank you for in the meantime, lydia we look forward to. thank you very much. >> (clapping) thank you. thank you. >> i hope you're not still

(laughter) but we want to get to, yes yes, yes, yes we want to make san francisco a better place for the people that actually live here and make sure that as we talk about urbanization we do so reasonably in a way that brings people together and along in the process. san francisco has to build 82 thousand unit in the next seven years will take us making sure that we are having a responsible conversation and the planning department that didn't just say we're going to build a
4:20 am
thirty story building in on slow street near ocean beach is not climate change feasible no time three it makes sense that's why lydia will be great i couldn't be here be are important proud what that means for an extraordinary commission thank you for coming here you made named over in the room so glad you are here because it is tough estimate to i'll leave it at that. i can'ts community of people that she is not someone who operates in isolation but passion for the work and passion for the community. and she will continue i know to doing everything we can to share that all of you are brought into the planning progress whether i
4:21 am
understand it or not thank you for being here today [♪♪♪] >> i really believe that art should be available to people for free, and it should be part of our world, you shouldn't just be something in museums, and i love that the people can just go there and it is there for everyone. [♪♪♪]
4:22 am
>> i would say i am a multidimensional artist. i came out of painting, but have also really enjoyed tactile properties of artwork and tile work. i always have an interest in public art. i really believe that art should be available to people for free, and it should be part of our world. you shouldn't just be something in museums. i love that people can just go there, and it is there for everyone. public art is art with a job to do. it is a place where the architecture meets the public. where the artist takes the meaning of the site, and gives a voice to its. we commission culture, murals, mosaics, black pieces, cut to mental, different types of material.
4:23 am
it is not just downtown, or the big sculptures you see, we are in the neighborhood. those are some of the most beloved kinds of projects that really give our libraries and recreation centers a sense of uniqueness, and being specific to that neighborhood. colette test on a number of those projects for its. one of my favorites is the oceanview library, as well as several parks, and the steps. >> mosaics are created with tile that is either broken or cut in some way, and rearranged to make a pattern. you need to use a tool, nippers, as they are called, to actually
4:24 am
shape the tiles of it so you can get them to fit incorrectly. i glued them to mash, and then they are taken, now usually installed by someone who is not to me, and they put cement on the wall, and they pick up the mash with the tiles attached to it, and they stick it to the wall, and then they groped it afterwards. [♪♪♪] >> we had never really seen artwork done on a stairway of the kinds that we were thinking of because our idea was very just barely pictorial, and to have a picture broken up like that, we were not sure if it would visually work. so we just took paper that size and drew what our idea was, and cut it into strips, and took it down there and taped it to the steps, and stepped back and looked around, and walked up and down and figured out how it would really work visually. [♪♪♪]
4:25 am
>> my theme was chinese heights because i find them very beautiful. and also because mosaic is such a heavy, dens, static medium, and i always like to try and incorporate movement into its, and i work with the theme of water a lot, with wind, with clouds, just because i like movements and lightness, so i liked the contrast of making kites out of very heavy, hard material. so one side is a dragon kite, and then there are several different kites in the sky with the clouds, and a little girl below flying it. [♪♪♪]
4:26 am
>> there are pieces that are particularly meaningful to me. during the time that we were working on it, my son was a disaffected, unhappy high school student. there was a day where i was on the way to take them to school, and he was looking glum, as usual, and so halfway to school, i turned around and said, how about if i tell the school you are sick and you come make tiles with us, so there is a tile that he made to. it is a little bird. the relationship with a work of art is something that develops over time, and if you have memories connected with a place from when you are a child, and you come back and you see it again with the eyes of an adult, it is a different thing, and is just part of what makes the city an exciting place.
