connection to famiand the trust and respect this community has always been francisco and throughout the bay area. so, it is of course fitting to ak this moment to recognize the rich history and culture samoan community as it relates to san itical part of what makes san francisco a special and more vibrant and very diverse place. i appreciate the work of many of the organizations and the religioust held this community recognition and the lack of support that this community deserves. w relationship so much in terms ofable to finally make the kinds of investments at will help make a difference for community. in fact, visiting the samoan community center and having a ce to tour and to see the work first-hand with

young people an students and with others, it is inspiring, and it something that we need more of throughout san francisco. i appreciate mrs. patsy for all the she does, as well as christine and all you incredible leaders who hold this community together and how you come together today to recognize the significance of the samoan heritage here in san francisco. so, i want to also appreciate we t we in san francisco are an talk many the relationships between countries and places, the reason why has are often times very everything to do with san francisco and the people who coordinate this event and bring these kinds of activations to our city, involve no other then chief of protocol, marion and the council cower

>> i'm eric tanaka. fourth generation japanese americann raised in san francisco i work for the10, tru firefighter. i think about journey i think about my family. my grandfather came to san francisco in 1917 we have been r 100 years. married my grandr they por he was a successful ps. business owner in the city. whene started to start over he was murdered. d never met my grandfather. my grand mothe my mother were left to raise me, bro sis

money it is providing a life that is honorable and thoughtful. so that - the generations behind us see how hard my family worked make sure we have been able to sustain thrive in san francisco. community is huge to . it helped me become the person i am today. and r department. we got one of the busiest ation 3. in the in addi we have a surfcue program program cliff rescue program. we have so many things to be prouf a department. i can't say this enough, there is honestly no words to say how proud i am tork for the department and serve the community that grew up in. >> my name is julie maw. i am a captainn francisco fire department. i didn't grow up thinking i would be a firefighter. i didnlizet was an option. i didn't see other people who looks like me in the service, so i didn't have an idea that this was a for me. what inspired me is i had a few friends from the hip -- hawaiian community who were applying for the job at the timee apply as . we are a pretty tightknit community. we are like aam, the fire service is like a family. food is essential -- is central to our gatherings inire service as well. and teamwork and being part of somethingigger than yourself and really having community. that is what inspired fire depa. when i was applying for job and i was going down that route

of the hiringce i looked around and i started looking at the dre the rigs driving around the street and i said, you know what, there is somebody that looks like me. there is somebody that looks like me. to me, that was really important. and that representation, what i w, bulbs went on and i could see myself in the job. me, being in this position as a captain, and bei track and going around to her neighborhood, even when we are g most mundane of tasks, it is important that they see me in the role, right? asian pacific islander woman in a leadership position, that i am in this j and even ringing the bell for the kids in the neighborhood, they see me, they cs, my crew and it is huge. that lightbulbs can go off for them as w went on for me. it truly is important to me to

be part of an organization that supports diversity and representation. being in a job where we serve the community really important that we represent the community. i think visibility, representation is key to opening doors for others, other people of color, other women, other people in the asian pacific islander community and say, hey, be need too. i could be here serving the community and bnrefiter. [♪♪♪] >great wall hardware, 3500 square feet of retail space. we carry about 22 thousand items in here and coun stops because i have a thing. when a customer says, do you ani don't have it, it bothers me.

i won't have i so, it is just one of those things owning hardware store, people expect you to have everything and you try to if full thill fulfill that need. native san franciscan. born in chinatown, same as bruce lee, chinatown hospital. my family moved to the sunset in the late 70's, so my mom and thought, we are already doing construction, why don't we open a hardware store? nice dove tail to each other, so that is how that got started. started this store in 1983, and we have been every since, so now it is 40 years. i serving my neighborhood. i fealt a hardware store is different sses. most businesses you want to buy this or thatanorthat. a hardware store is different. people come in and usually problem and need a solution and looking for you to navigate them through that offer them products that help them get to where they need to go. the people are great.is neighbo.
