. >> nbc's monica alba and nbc 10's lauren mayk are reporting from philadelphia, and also with us is chuck todd. monica, what do we know about how this endorsement came together and how important it is to president biden? >> reporter: well, it's been in the works for some time, chris, and we know that recently there was a very intentional visit by members of the kennedy family to the white house on st. patrick's day, invited by president biden to spend some time together where we know that was meant to signal that they were laying the groundwork for this kind of endorsement where you're going to be seeing robert f. kennedy jr.'s siblings come out and effectively say we believe president biden has the values and is running on a platform that more closely aligns with what we believe in than that of our own sibling, nephew, uncle, relative. they're really going to come together and effectively say that this election for them is too important not to get off the sidelines and deliver this message today. and that is why former congressman joe kennedy ii told me in an interview they didn't

nbc's monica alba is reporting from philadelphia. what happened where you are? >> reporter: yeah, chris, and this does really punctuate that split screen week that the biden campaign was going for with the president doing events in pennsylvania three days in a row culminating in this endorsement from about 15 members of the kennedy family backing the current president in his bid for reelection over their own sibling, their own relative, robert f. kennedy, jr., who of course is mounting that third-party candidacy. we know in terms of talking to the kennedy family members that this was a difficult decision for them. it was weeks and months in the making. they had visited the white house, and they had been with president biden a short time ago for st. patrick's day. and they really had been having these conversations behind the scenes about how do we deliver this message that robert f. kennedy jr.'s candidacy could potentially peel off some key votes in critical battleground states that could harm the president's bid here in this race. and they ultimately decided t

joining us now, monica alba. what can we expect from the biden campaign there this afternoon? >> reporter: it will likely be a striking moment here. you will be having these notable members of the kennedy family come out and effectively say that they believe president joe biden's values, what he believes in align more closely with them than with their own brother, uncle and relative. that's supposed to be a significant and strong message that we are going to be hearing from robert f. kennedy junior's siblings who are coming here to formally endorse the president which comes after a matter of weeks where the campaign was laying the groundwork for this effort. we know that many members of the kennedy family were at the white house for st. patrick's day. they posted photos from that and hinted there would be more to come in the next phase of the campaign. that's exactly what we're going to be seeing here today. remember that robert f. kennedy, of course -- his father is a hero of president biden's. he has a bust of him in the oval office. he speaks of him frequently. we will be h
