joining us now is nbc's priscilla thompson from valley view, texas, where an ef 2 tornado came through. what's the latest on the ground? >> reporter: people here are in shock after what they survived on saturday and you look at the devastation and you understand why. we are at a gas station where the governor says 125 people were sheltering when the roof caved in as that ef 2 tornado bore down. that gives you a sense of the strength of the tornado. one woman told me she was covering over a baby and just praying and less than a mile up the road, there were families in their homes doing the same. we spoke to a woman, monica vazquez, who was in a closet with her five children and husband. the youngest child just 3 years old. so as you're in the closet with the kids, what was going through your mind? >> that i'm going to die. >> reporter: i feel you getting emotional. what's happening right now? >> because that's what i thought, me and my family were going to die. >> reporter: and so we're talking about folks that are traumatized after what they experienced and are now looking at their hom

let's get set with priscilla thompson. she's in humble, texas, this morning, north of houston. a massive cleanup is under way. priscilla, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. these are the kinds of scenes that people are waking up to this morning. you can see this entire road is still covered in water leading into this neighborhood, and i'll zoom in on that flood gauge back there and give you a look, you can see the water is below six inches. it looks like it's sitting at around three inches. i will tell you, when we were here yesterday, that number was more like a foot and a half, so the water is receding, which is very good news for the people living in these communities looking to get back into their homes today. parts of texas under water this morning. >> oh, that was floating. >> reporter: after a weekend of deadly flooding ravaged the southeastern part of the state. new video shows rescuers near dallas desperately searching the high waters for four-year-old lucas warren who was swept away by raging waters. tragically, the boy was later found dead. rescuers u

but first, nbc's priscilla thompson is in houston for us. priscilla, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, hoda, good morning, this is the scene up and down this block, trees that have been removed from homes, blue tarps damage, while millions brace for cleanup here continues. meanwhile, residents in kansas and oklahoma are waking up to survey the damage after nine reported tornadoes touched down overnight. this morning, severe storms sweeping through the south and midwest, bringing tornadoes to the central plains, along with heavy rains and high winds. >> no. oh, my god. >> reporter: the possible twisters touching down in oklahoma. and in kansas, destructive storms raked the i-70 corridor. >> look at it out there on the road. >> reporter: powerful winds clocking in at 100 miles per hour, along with baseball-sized hail, drivers taking shelter at this gas station. damage from severe storms also a concern in the south and southwest. it's all coming at a difficult time for texas as thousands of homes and businesses in houston are still without power
