valley water approved a rate hike in a 6 to 1 vote this afternoon. most people in santa clara county will pay nearly $9 more, while in the south county it's a smaller increase between 1 to $3 a month. valley water says the extra money is needed to fund critical infrastructure projects like the seismic retrofit of the anderson dam in morgan hill. can't let these infrastructure projects be delayed anymore. the longer we wait, the more they end up costing and it ends up costing us more down the road. so really, this is the most cost effective way to get these projects done is to get them done. now to that point, the dam retrofit is valley water's biggest project. costs have ballooned to more than $2 billion. the retrofit will strengthen the dam, protect santa clara county from major flooding. those new rates, by the way, begin july 1st. okay. did you see it over the weekend? that wayward pelican that landed in left field during the giants game on saturday? that pelican has become a fan favorite. it's been dubbed the rally pelican, wildlife experts say,
