aaron gilchrist at the white house, thank you for that. we now go to matt bradley in tel aviv, israel. that, i want to ask you what you make of the pentagon's assessment, the information they have released, that which erin was just talking about, what i was discussing with dan de luce. what is your take on it? >> yeah, it sounds as though we are about to see a tour of the middle east. there are two really strong currents flowing through this region, both of which involve the u.s. to a great degree. one of them is hostage negotiations to free the more than 100 people still in the gaza strip. six of them, by the way, are americans. the other are those american reprisal attacks against iranian-backed groups in iraq and syria. just last night, in yemen, though according to the u.s. government those are not related. jake sullivan, the national security adviser, and if our audience will bear with me, i will show a little bit more of what he said to our various shows today. he spoke directly to the connection between those two trends now flowing

aaron gilchrist is standing by. he's got some news. aaron? >> ali, we've been talking to some of our sources, i understand from a senior administration official that the strikes were seeing in yemen today are not related to the strike that we saw yesterday in iraq and syria. we've been told that the action today was unrelated to that. and that this strike, these trucks today, are in direct response to actions taken by the iran-backed houthis in yemen. and a part of the continued effort that we've seen over the last weeks and months, really, to degrade the houthis ability to strike these vessels at our transiting the red sea. obviously, as you look at the bigger picture here, there is an effort to reach all of these entities that have been lashing out, if you will. we know that there have been strikes in syria, and iran against facilities against housing troops over the last several months. and as a result of that, the u.s. has had smaller strikes, that we've seen, to try to stop some of these attacks. to say to these smaller militia groups th

chris. >> aaron gilchrist, thank you. let's go to garrett haake with what donald trump is planning when he heads to the southern border. i think the two men are going to be 330 miles apart geographically, but politically they are much further apart than that, garrett. what can you tell us? >> reporter: about a five-hour drive between those two border communities and light years apart in terms of the messaging you'll see. the trump campaign is taking credit for the fact that joe biden will be visiting the texas border on the same day they are. a spokesperson calling it an insincere attempt by the white house to chase joe biden to the border. perhaps they mean it literally, but they argue the point figuratively that this has been the issue that has been driving donald trump's campaign, arguably going back to 2015, but certainly in this cycle and that only now does president biden make his second trip to the border as president. they feel like this is sort of their editorial high ground within the context of this presidentia

nbc's aaron gilchrist joins us now from the white house and julie tsirkin is on the hill for us.aaron, what is the white house plan for this meeting? does the president have leverage to force a deal here? >> i think the short answer is no. the white house has said he's called the congressional leaders to the white house with the vice president to really elevate the urgency of the moment, the need to keep the government open, beyond the deadlines friday and next week and to elevate the urgency of passing a national security supplemental, funding for the war effort that ukraine is mounting against russia as well as other efforts that are being undertaken for israel and aid for gaza as well, for the people -- for the palestinian people there. the white house said that this is an issue, these are issues really that are for congress to take care of, the idea of funding the government is a congressional responsibility. and passing these measures also is a congressional responsibility and we heard the white house say that they need to get the job done. the president, though, believes an

nbc's aaron gilchrist is covering the white house. good to see you. what's your take on why putin and russian authorities are so focused on alexei navalny and his mother, especially on a day like today when those big sanctions are coming down? >> i think they're actually not that focused on alexei navalny. they wanted him physically to go away, and now they want his memory to go away. they are trying to make him a non-factor in russian society, and that is why it seems that they don't want him to have -- or don't want the family to have a public funeral for him that could become a political gathering. he could become a public martyr, and according to the mother, who made this video statement, she said that the officials that she's been dealing with, the russian officials didn't come out explicitly and say you must do this and you can't do that, but it was strongly suggested to her that the body is decomposing, that time isn't on our side, that they could release the body, but it should really be a public funeral -- a private funeral in secret, otherwi

joining me now is nbc news white house correspondent aaron gilchrist live from wilmington, delaware with more. erin, good afternoon. what is the plan now for the biden administration moving forward after the release of hur's report? >> well katie, we saw an angry president biden thursday night after the report came out. i don't think you are going to see a lot more of that. the president isn't likely to be out on the campaign trail or the white house for that matter addressing this issue over and over again, but i also think that we got a pretty decent preview of what will happen from vice president kamala harris in from the white house counsel's office yesterday. the vice president speaking at another event or an unrelated event i should say, took time to address one question, it was a question about this report, and how it talked about president biden. she went into detail about what happened in the days after this president sat for the interview that led to this report and talked about how he was engaged and running the show with his national security team in the days after the attack

aaron gilchrist is standing by, what if you got >> we just got a statement from several countries involvedthese strikes that you have been talking about in yemen, including obviously the united states and the uk, but also australia, bahrain, canada, denmark, the netherlands, all saying that they have conducted an additional round of proportion and necessary strikes against 36 houthi targets across 13 locations in yemen. the number is a little different from what we have heard earlier, this is the response. they say the houthis as well as naval vessels on the red sea. these were precision strikes intended to disrupt the capabilities that the houthis used to threaten global trade, and the rise of innocent mariners. and, i am literally just looking it as we were on the air -- so having read through the whole statement. today's strikes specific targeted sites associate with the houthis deeply buried weapons storage facilities, missile systems, and launchers, air defense systems, and radar as well. the houthis now, more than 30 attacks on commercial vessels and naval vessels since mid november
