apec is now over. a week filled with history-making meetings, star-studded galas, and daily protests. the summit is wrapping up tonight in san francisco. the barriers around the moscone center will start to come down this evening. most of the world leaders are on their way out. that includes president biden. he boarded air force one this afternoon at sfo. wheels up at around 2:00 p.m. also at sfo, hundreds of people lining the access road. it includes both supporters of chinese president xi jinping and protesters. we've been seeing this all week. at times, the two groups clashed as they waited for the president's motorcade to drive through. police ultimately separated the two groups. two people were taken to the hospital. >>> one of the last official apec events, president biden passing the baton to the president of peru, the host of next year's apec summit. there's the handshake. nbc bay area's janelle wang joins us from moscone center with the final details. >> reporter: raj, that's a wrap. apec 2023

what is the national center for apec?ck in 1993, when president bill clinton gathered the apec leaders for the first time at that presidential level, he did so in seattle. and after that was finished, one of the one of the real priorities of that meeting was bringing the private sector closer into the apec process, and the national center was established to work with the private sector to integrate them into the apec process. so we've been doing that for 30 years out of seattle and doing, you know, there's a lot of the apec ongoing work, the working groups and ministries, ministerial meetings and that that are doing a lot with the private sector, get a lot of private sector input. and that i think helps make better policy in the end. can you talk about why that private sector involvement in specifically the ceos involvement and the stakeholders as well? is vital to get things really done? well, one of the things a great example is the forum we had today on sustainability. it was called the sustainable future forum, but it

but apec is the reason they are here. all of that at moscone center, where ryan yamamoto joins us live. tell us what the atmosphere is like there, and what it has been like today, ryan. apec it is a different energy here at the moscone center. more international and national media are now in town for the arrival of all those world leaders coming for apec. the biggest person to come into town was joe biden. two big names at the apec summit. president joe biden and president xi jinping. biden arriving this afternoon at sfo and making his way to san francisco, where he will stay at the fairmont on top of hill. three hours ago, the other big name at apec, arriving in town, chinese president, xi, landing at sfo, making his first trip to the united states in six years. he was greeted by janet yellen and gavin newsom. tomorrow's meetings will include discussions of trade and climate change and the protection of ideas of technology being hacked. >> i want to get back on the normal course , being able to pick up the phone and talk

as the apec summit kicks into high gear this week. the estimated economic impact for san francisco is supposed to be in the tens of millions of dollars. shawn chitnis is near the moscone center this morning, where one of the security zones closes off to the soma neighborhood. >> reporter: we are at this intersection of howard in third in front of the moscone center where you can see these large barricades that are taking over most size of intersection, as they get ready for the events surrounding apec to ramp up in the next couple of days. the event began officially on saturday and so businesses were expecting to see clouds in the area over the weekend. we are talking to a restaurant and they tell us they had mostly empty tables and chairs. and it felt quite slow. they made the decision to extend their hours because they anticipated that there would be plenty of crowds around apec. now they have gone ahead and canceled all product deliveries for the week because of the closures. they also expect that delivery drivers for doordash and

now, there are several parties on the sidelines of apec today, including a dinner hosted by the apec business advisory council. that's taking place at the westin st. francis, there are other parties including one hosted by california's treasury secretary, fiona ma, and visa will have its party at the ferry building. yesterday, protesters led by the apec coalition took to the streets of san francisco to speak out against the summit. one of the protesters was brandon lee. he protested against apec when it was held in manila. brandon is quadriplegic, he no longer has use of hands and legs after being shot in the philippines in 2019. he believes the motivation for that shooting was his work with indigenous people, and activism for protecting their land against big mining people. he says activism has changed his life. >> still work, as long as i am breathing, i will keep sharing the stories of the indigenous peoples that i serve. i will keep standing with them, standing with the people in the philippines, standing with the workers all over the world as long as i'm still breathing. >> bran

apec 2023 has officially come to a close as you mentioned. world leaders are flying. they're on their way back home. the security perimeter also starting to come down. i saw secret service leaving and streets starting to reopen around this area, around moscone center. president biden departed sfo just after 1:30 this afternoon. he is returning to home in delaware for the weekend before heading back to the nation's capital. this morning he had a couple final meetings at moscone center. that included hosting one last roundtable with all 21 member economies of apec. president biden started off the meeting with a joke, saying "we're going to extend this conference for another five days." he got a few chuckles from world leaders and then went on to highlight the achievements of apec, including starting a women and a sustainable economy initiative, which aims to support women in industries to fight climate change. the president also had one final one-on-one meeting with mexico's president, andres manuel lopez obrador. the main topics they discussed, migration, fentanyl, and
