audrey. all right. jeff. thank you. large truck fire triggered some major problems in the east bay today, both for firefighters and drivers. take a look. contra costa, firefighters say that they first responded to the fire around 9:00 this morning. this is on 680 in concord, near monument boulevard. and you could just see how large those flames were there. our nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead as well, as the truck was still smoldering and chp says firefighters actually had to wait before extinguishing that fire because the truck had a couple of air tanks inside that could have caused an explosion. so crews were stationed in nearby neighborhoods to watch out for people and homes. and first responders kept their distance until the fire settled down. eventually, they were able to safely put it out. no word yet on what caused that fire. and take a look at the traffic backup on the freeway. this morning. earlier today, chp closed all northbound lanes on 680. a couple of lanes southbound as well. but as as of 30 minutes a

i'm audrey asistio. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. we have been tracking this breaking news on air and online for the past six hours. now, this intense eight alarm fire has destroyed an affordable housing project. the fire actually started around 10:00, a little after 10:00 this morning. flames quickly engulfed the 179 unit building that was under construction. the good news this afternoon. the fire is now under control. the construction site is located on middlefield road. building was expected to open later this year or early next year. firefighters believe the fire started on the fifth floor, possibly in the insulation and about 100 construction workers had to evacuate. an air quality advisory has also been issued due to the heavy smoke, with winds expected to push that smoke all the way south into san jose. the nearby garfield community school was released early today, and with wind blowing embers around that neighborhood, many were told to evacuate immediately. they said that they were going to move to the safe zone one more bloc
