audrey. all right. well looking forward to hearing from both sides in your report later on this evening. tom thank you for that update and that, that preview. appreciatit. all right. santa clara county public health leaders are now sounding the alarm about an outbreak of a highly infectious bacteria known as shigella. so most of the cases have been reported in the unhoused communities in san jose's, actually, columbus park, while there have only been three confirmed cases, the public health department is looking into 18 other suspected cases. shigella is a hyper contagious gastrointestinal illness that can lead to cramping, diarrhea and nausea. in more serious cases, though, it can lead to life threatening gastrointestinal issues. health officials say there may be more cases than they're able to track . we are working aggressively to get testing kits out to all these individuals and get those test kits back, but it is a challenge. so, you know, it will be, difficult to identify every single person that

audrey. all right. jeff. thank you. large truck fire triggered some major problems in the east bay today, both for firefighters and drivers. take a look. contra costa, firefighters say that they first responded to the fire around 9:00 this morning. this is on 680 in concord, near monument boulevard. and you could just see how large those flames were there. our nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead as well, as the truck was still smoldering and chp says firefighters actually had to wait before extinguishing that fire because the truck had a couple of air tanks inside that could have caused an explosion. so crews were stationed in nearby neighborhoods to watch out for people and homes. and first responders kept their distance until the fire settled down. eventually, they were able to safely put it out. no word yet on what caused that fire. and take a look at the traffic backup on the freeway. this morning. earlier today, chp closed all northbound lanes on 680. a couple of lanes southbound as well. but as as of 30 minutes a

i'm audrey asistio and i'm raj mathai. the owner of a san francisco cigarette shop is picking up the pieces after thieves not only hit his store, but left some major damage behind. they rammed a vehicle right through his front doors and then ransacked the richmond district business. neighbors are frustrated with all the break ins. here's nbc bay area's sergio quintana. workers spent most of the day trying to fix the damage to the two front doors at the cigarettes cheaper store at 17th avenue and geary boulevard, in photos shared with us by neighbors, you can see how both doors appear to be rammed in. neighbor harrison green saw the damage as he walked by the store this morning. there were a couple police officers here talking with the talking with the owner, and the door was ripped off its hinges. you know, it looked like the incredible hulk went in there and ripped it off. the owner of the store, zahid rahmani, shared photos and videos of a car he says was involved in the break in. rahmani says police arrived on scene pre

hey raj and audrey. yeah. so state legislators just did some significant housekeeping in the state's lodging laws. two new consumer protection laws are going to kick in july. first for bookings made starting july first. and that's why you might want to pause. let's take a look at them. the first one requires hotels and vacation rentals to do something that we have been calling for. for a long time to disclose all fees up front. that means no more surprise resort amenity, cleaning junk, whatever fees that just jack up the price. now, hotel and vacation rentals can still advertise room rates without tax, but all required fees must be part of the price you see up front. also prices on room service menus must include service fees up front. and there's good reason for hotels to comply. the hotel association warned members that if they don't comply, they face government fines, up to $10,000 per violation. okay, the second new law mirrors airline law and it gives you the option to cancel a hotel or vacation rental bo

i'm audrey asistio. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. we have been tracking this breaking news on air and online for the past six hours. now, this intense eight alarm fire has destroyed an affordable housing project. the fire actually started around 10:00, a little after 10:00 this morning. flames quickly engulfed the 179 unit building that was under construction. the good news this afternoon. the fire is now under control. the construction site is located on middlefield road. building was expected to open later this year or early next year. firefighters believe the fire started on the fifth floor, possibly in the insulation and about 100 construction workers had to evacuate. an air quality advisory has also been issued due to the heavy smoke, with winds expected to push that smoke all the way south into san jose. the nearby garfield community school was released early today, and with wind blowing embers around that neighborhood, many were told to evacuate immediately. they said that they were going to move to the safe zone one more bloc

nbc bay area's audrey asistio is here with more. reporter raj and jess.eral vivek murthy. stark warning is fueling a national discussion over limiting kids access to social media. he now wants all platforms to come with a warning, similar to what we now put on cigarets and alcohol. when adolescents spend more than three hours a day on social media, we are seeing an association with a doubling of risk of anxiety and depression symptoms. doctor murthy says kids are averaging five hours per day on social media and now he wants congressional approval to add a warning label on social media. but specific to kids suggesting research shows that predators lurk on social media and popular sites can undermine kids self-confidence, especially body image, with some children taking their own lives. pamela paul is a columnist with the new york times who writes about culture and the way we live. she spoke with our raj mathai during our 7 p.m. newscast. it could have been done five years ago. it could have been done ten years ago. we've been seeing very consistently since

i'm raj mathai and i'm audrey asistio tonight.emont police say they are still investigating after a cvs security guard was shot and killed inside a fremont store last thursday. the man who police say shot the guard was stabbed and remains in the hospital tonight. and now police are hoping the public can help them understand exactly what unfolded here. here's nbc bay area's robert honda barnsdall art park business has resumed at the cvs pharmacy in the fremont hub shopping center, but it will be a while before things are back to normal for workers and many customers. police say a contracted security guard, 41 year old abakar amin, was shot during a struggle with a man who came into the store last thursday night. those who remembered amin say he was a dedicated guard. i've seen him here and there, you know, and from what i did see, he seemed like he was, you know, a pretty good security guard. i mean, to be diligent. yeah. can do what he can possibly do, you know, so it's just. yeah, it's devastating. police are still investigating.
