but to see all the colors associated with the aurora that was pretty unique this far south. typically you might find this in alaska or canada, but with the aurora set up as far south as it was last night, the upper energy particles reacting off the earth's atmosphere, the molecules up there, the oxygen and nitrogen molecules higher up. you get those red colors above 200km. then as you drop down to 100km and lower blue, green and pink showing up, those are the colors we usually don't see because the aurora is too far to the north. but that was not the case last night, and we might have one more chance, i think after midnight tonight. but things are shaping up for now. a bit more quiet. the levels have dropped off during the day right now. too low for us to see any aurora viewing, but the space weather prediction center expects the next wave, another pulse of energy moving away from the sun to react if the earth's upper atmosphere after midnight tonight, which could bring that viewing line back into parts of northern california and perhaps closer to the bay area late tonight.
