barbara ballard, who teaching african-american history at the time, and both those women set me on the path, writing a thesis. we had a sort of a special honors thesis program there where you worked all with primary source documents to write your thesis. so i did work on that went all over the country as a college student, and that thesis eventually became my first book that was published with the university of nebraska press, which was a post-civil war history. then i went from that book working at virginia historical society in richmond, now virginia museum of history and culture after i spoke there about, that book, the staff said, heath, you need to come look at these primaries source documents about. phyllis galanti, she was one of the prisoner of war wives that starred in my league of wives book, which led me to the nixon library, where i began working on. that works on that topic at the nixon library, which then led me to working on mrs. nixon at the nixon library. so it's so interesting. it was all really based on primary source research and oral histories being trained in how
