it's more than 1 1/2 miles long and crosses the outer baltimore harbor. cbs's jarred hill is here with this late-breaking news. this video so dramatic. >> just looking at this, it's just crazy. this is nuts here. so this happened around 1:30 this morning baltimore time. baltimore city fire telling us the ship hit one of the columns on the key bridge, sending it collapsing into the river there. a tractor trailer was on the bridge when it collapsed, possibly other vehicles. the "associated press" is reporting multiple vehicling fell into the water. we're told a diving and rescue team is searching for at least seven people to be believed in the water. that's as of an hour ago. no word on why the ship hit the bridge. the mayor says he's been in contact with the governor of maryland as well as everyone tries to figure out what happened here and save as many lives as possible. >> i know the focus is on the search-and-rescue operation, obviously the investigation still in its early stages. but do we have any sense of whether this was an accident or whether there

we were earlier today, about 25 miles south of baltimore outside baltimore harbor on the chesapeake bay, where we witnessed at least eight tankers and cargo ships, other vessels, basically, just anchored there. they're waiting for direction on where to go. this is a massive undertaking to reroute all of these ships that are not only well, you can't reroute the ones that are for stuck here obviously because they can't move for weeks, probably. but to reroute the ships that were heading into baltimore and now have to go to other ports like the port of virginia and the hampton roads area. they have to go to ports north of here, like in philadelphia, new york, and elsewhere. so that is a massive undertaking. we saw some of those tankers that were just sitting there in the chesapeake bay hey, massive backup of cargo traffic. so that's what they're up against here. jessica, you mentioned that heavy crane coming in. we were told early on that it was going to take at least a couple of days to get that heavy equipment onsite to start removing that massive debris in those chunks of the bridge tha

i take it what happened in baltimore harbor will be studied for decades. it will it will become one of those tragic accidents that we take lessons learned from. and then we apply them to what we're teaching the students of what to do in an emergency on the bridge of a ship >> and miguel is with us now. that was so instructive to be able to see it from the perspective of the cabin and anxiety provoking it was stressful for me to be in there when he was trying to direct these guys that's the that information from the engineering room is what they were trying to get more than anything that they will be looking for from the black boxes. but more importantly, all the metrics from all the different systems on the ships. and as they said in the press conference last night, they may not have a lot of that information patient, but what systems we're going up, what systems we're going down when they were and why is what they will, they will study that for decades to come. >> the timing of all this, it was interesting to hear the captains say the timing was so crucia

this is in the baltimore harbor area. this is a high traffic route for these ships.was pulling out of the harbor, leaving port when for some reason it wasn't able to maneuver correctly. and it hit one of those pylons. now, normally in this area, there is someone from the harbor who controls the ship. pilots this ship out of the harbor before the actual crew of the ship then takes over, there are some outlets reporting that the crew on board the ship is okay, but what we can see from images that are now surfacing are is part of the bridge. the collapse actually fell on top of the ship. and in the live stream video, we see the lights flicker on that boat, does that point that they lost some sort of maneuverability? we are working to find that out. we expected the ntsb will launch a go team. we know a number of different agencies are working this. they are using night vision goggles. divers are in the water. and at the time of the collapse, there was a construction crew working on there. they believe that there are at least seven people, but there could be more in the w
