with that, bill karins, where is this thing right now and where is it headed next?the worst is over in new york city and southward. the storm is over long island. it's long island northward that we're still seeing heavy rain and strong winds. there's water everywhere. a lot of the rivers are cresting in the mid-atlantic and areas of new jersey. the number one concern right now for life and property, snow melting rapidly with temperatures in the 50s and 60s which is ridiculous for this time of year, and along with it the heavy rain. already considerable wind damage along the coastal areas. most of the power play outages are in maine and massachusetts. in maine, one in every five households doesn't have power right now. the cold air is coming in on the back side. on-and-off snow showers, michigan, ohio, indiana. these are flash flood warnings. every dot on this map is a river that's in flood stage. so the wrors it gets, orange is minor, red is moderate. we've been watching a couple rivers in major flood stage near the pennsylvania/new jersey border. also the sacco riv

let's turn to meteorologist bill karins. we're already seeing the impacts in florida but we know the system is on the move. is it now and where is it going? >> this is going to be a nor'easter heading up the east coast this weekend but without the snow, just a big rain and windstorm and it will have the ripple effects travel wise across the country because there are so many major airports that will be affected. we start on saturday, bright reds and yellows is the heavy rain, it's a florida problem. by the time we get to sund south carolina, north carolina, all the heavy rain, charlotte, raleigh, heading up towards richmond, washington, d.c. late in the day and then on monday new york city to hartford, boston, all of northern new england. this storm is going to rain up into southern canada. so here is how it plays out this weekend, saturday outlook there is the rain, light rain in the middle of the country. in the west it's very mild, sunny, proo pretty nice and calm a beautiful saturday, 79 degrees, no problems in l.a. then

meteorologist bill karins is tracking it all for us. bill, first off, where are we seeing the rain and where is it heading next in. >> morgan, north portions of the cascades is still where we're seeing the flooding. water in homes, water covering roads, lot of roads have been blocked in the area, i believe we have some of the pictures that we can show you from earlier this morning. it's only gotten worse since the early morning hours. 9 million under these flood watches. all these marooned areas, where we have flood warnings on the rivers. all the major rivers. that's now going to be in next two days the story. the rain is going to be shifting southward. snow melt going in mountains, southern washington and the cascades, just outside of portland, the bright yellow, from seattle south, that's where we'll start to see the rivers going up in the days ahead. as far as the rainfall totals go, an additional -- this is out through thursday, additional storm behind us, 2 to 4 inches in the cascades. northern california, possibly 3 to 5. we got

meteorologist bill karins is tracking that, but we start with nbc's kathy park at atlanta's airport. what are they telling you? >> reporter: it's the holiday week, but all things considered it's been relatively smooth here at the busiest airport in the world, here in atlanta, we've seen very few disruptions and a lot of smiles, everyone is in good spirits, but this was a far cry from what we saw yesterday in the northeast, you might remember there were thousands of flights delays and cancellations with those nasty storms that we just checked the misery map and things appear to be back on track but back here in atlanta, we're told things are really starting to pick up later in the week, specifically on friday, where they anticipate peak travel, roughly 90,000 passengers that day and the whole holiday season they anticipate 3.3 million air travelers and that's something that we haven't seen pre-covid, now we actually earlier today had a chance to speak with an air traveler and things weren't necessarily smooth for her. take a listen. >> i'm excited to go -- christmas sometimes is a tim

tom, thank you. >>> let's bring in bill karins, this wet weather could cause a lot of problems for holidays on the west coast, where are the storms now? >> reporter: unlike the big storm that we had on the east coast, this one is going to be more isolated to an area that's highly impacted but not widespread. it will remain off the coast, just south here of southern california, but this heavy band of rain has moved onshore. we're getting that heavy rain impacts. los angeles, thousands oaks, a couple of showers. later tonight, that's going to move towards santa barbara and malibu, the south-facing mountains that we're worried about, the storms are approaching from the south, i'm worried about the areas from oxnard, to malibu as we go through the overnight hours tonight into tomorrow. but 22 million are in flood watch. los angeles, it doesn't look like you're going to get the extreme high amounts of rain. same goes for san diego. but the really impactful stuff, where we can get mud and debris flow, this area here, in and around the malibu santa barbara areas. at least 3 inches. some areas cou

meteorologist bill karins is tracking the system closely for us but let's start with george solis at philadelphia's international airport. the timing of this system could not be worse with holiday traveling already happening. what do people need to know. >> reporter: airports and airlines happy this that is a rain event not a snow event. many trying to commute encountering some of those torrential and heavy rains this morning. flight aware reporting 2500 delays across the nation's airports. more than 500 cancellations, some people are being barely inconvenienced right now, many happening in the northeast. boston the target area right now as some of this storm system moves into the new england area. still some people that we spoke here at phl earlier this morning they had to combat some of those treacherous terrain here to get to the airport. take a listen. >> the flood was crazy, we had to take different routes through the city to get here, but nevertheless we're here and we got to check our bags before we miss our flight. >> reporter: silver lining that a lot of that rain has moved

joining me now, nbc meteorologist bill karins.oast. how long is this going to go on? >> we have been waiting for where the storms will be. everybody thinks of el nino, the devastation we have seen in california, especially the one in 1997. this is set up over the northwest. a huge storm last week and this one on top of it was too much for a lot of the rivers. some of these will be expiring later today, and a bunch later on tonight. it's all of these maroon colors. some of the ones that had record crests yesterday have come down. now we're starting to do the recovery and the cleanup efforts. a lot of the ones south of seattle here, down towards border with oregon, and the rivers are cresting as we speak. some additional damage is being done now. then by tonight, all the rivers will come back down. it's still pouring from portland southwards, this is all rain. it's light rain now in washington state. that's why our rivers are recovering. as we head into california, you're getting into the mix too, especially northern california, an
