blackman did vote and were elected into office, but they never enacted any policy that hurt when peopletook away their rights, but none of that mattered to the confederates and their supporters, who were determined to deprive people of any opportunity to transcend slavery, so they falsely claimed that emancipation, equal rights and the franchise were wasted on black people. these claims were part of the larger whites from assist political project to deny black people dignity and equality after slavery. with black people, quote, not knowing their place, white southerners claimed they simply had no choice but to restore their honor, and the only way they could do that was by forming white terror gangs, overthrowing oppressors, and installing the racist apartheid system of jim crow. they flooded the public discourse with so much of this propaganda , in k-12 education, popular culture, politics, professional history, and public policy, that americans ignored the story that survivors like eliza left on the historical record. i saw death coming. i used testimonies like hers to challenge the f

this again, shows the agency that blackman seized and they saw opportunities to change their situation and they took advantage of them in the same way fugitive slaves did throughout the history of slavery. i would like to maybe talk for a couple more minutes about the legacy and how i see the legacy of the civil war and, of course, this country has seen the end of slavery in maryland, there were apprenticeship laws in the books which allowed white men to convince the judge at the court if parents could not properly care for their children, that these black children could be forcibly apprenticed. they are supposed to receive room and board and wages. it was essentially a continuation of slavery by other means. there are affidavits and letters primarily from black women but also men who are pleading with military authorities, judges, legislators, anybody who they thought could help them get their kids back and some of these accounts are heartbreaking when a woman says i showed up at mr. smith's house and he told me to get the out and he hit me over the head with his pistol. it took two y
