baltimore mayor brandon scott tweeted earlier he was aware of the incident and was en route to this collapse site. nbc news correspondent ryan nobles is heading to the scene for us, joining us by phone. ryan, this is obviously just happened a short time ago. the footage here is hard even to fathom just how quickly this massive bridge collapses into the water. tell us what's the very latest? what do we know? >> jonathan, i just arrived at the base of the francis scott key bridge just outside baltimore where the bridge has obviously been completely shutdown. they are cut off traffic in and out of the area around the bridge. we are currently staging an -- in an immediate staging area right near the bridge. it is still dark right now, so it's hard to determine just the scale of what this tragedy will end up looking like. from my vantage point right now i can tell you that there are emergency helicopters that are circling the area around where the bridge stood. we know that there is coast guard and local first responders that are in the water right now trying to determine whether or not there are
