i really hope fame doesn't change me. moving wildfire tears through butte county. the new help firefighters are receiving from teams here in the bay area. plus, this should be the hottest day in a long heat wave. we are tracking record breaking conditions and there are last minute changes for the 4th of july. major reversals when it comes to fireworks in two cities. this is today in the bay well, good morning to you. happy wednesday i'm scott mcgrew and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura have the morning off. we want to get right to meteorologist kari hall because we are already feeling this warm up. and it is still so early. it is early, and we're dealing with multiple fires across the region. so we're tracking all of these conditions as we enter into one of the hottest days. we'll see in this streak of some very extreme temperatures. here's a map of all the current fires, and one of them burning far farther to the north in butte county. the thompson fire is putting up a lot of smoke, but we also have some closer to the bay area that will have an impact on our air

and governor newsom was in butte county this weekend near the fire zone. newsom toured the command center on saturday and heard from cal fire officials about the plan of attack. he says the park fire has presented an all hands on deck situation. >> we're back up here in butte county at the site of one of the largest wildfires in california history, the park fire. you're hearing aerial assets above putting all hands on deck. 350,000 acres and growing by the second over 2500 personnel working the fire, working to hold the line, doing what they can, and a fire that was ignited was initiated right behind me. >> newsom says federal assistance has now been secured for tehama county. this is in addition to the federal assistance already secured for butte county here in the bay area, firefighters are gaining control on two brush fires in the east bay in alameda county, the creek fire has been burning in sunol regional park since friday afternoon. >> it's grown to more than 730 acres. cal fire's latest update has containment at 15%, and crews have stopped the forwa

we're joined by cal fire public information officer for butte county, dan collins. dan, thanks so much for joining us. >> hi, how are you. >> so i'm good. give us the latest on this fire. as we know there are evacuations. we know this fire continues to burn. and we know that everyone is dealing with this extreme heat. >> yeah, yeah. so currently the fire is 2135 acres with 0% containment. we have approximately 400 personnel committed to the incident, and we have more resources inbound from around northern california to help support the operation. the fire first started about 10:51 a.m, and we had been actively engaged in fighting the fire since. >> can you talk about the terrain that you're dealing with and really how close it is to the folks who are being evacuated and the folks who are being told to just kind of be on notice and make sure that if it has any closer, they're going to need to pack up and get out to. >> yeah, yeah. we, so the fire, the heel of the fire started in around a sparsely populated area, a lot of hills, grass, oak woodland and brush, it got w

a massive fire is still growing in butte county. this is time-lapse video of what they're calling the park fire. >> which just started yesterday but has already burned more than 71,000 acres. we now know one man is in custody, accused of starting the fire. clint curtis standing by live for us in butte county with the latest on firefighters efforts to fight this blaze. chloe firefighters that, you know, they're trying to contain this thing what conditions are they up against? >> it has not been an ideal for firefighters out here. they're working against upward of 20 mile per hour winds and it's been another triple digit heat day here in butte county. now over the last couple of summers that we haven't had much fire activity here in butte county, which tends to make people more nervous about what the next year could bring. and unfortunately, this summer in butte county has been a summer that's been really difficult between the apache fire. the thompson fire and now the park fire that you're taking a look at some of the damage that we'

now heading back north to butte county, there are evacuation, places. evacuation centers, i should say. there's one set up at the nazarene church in oroville, as well as the butte county fairgrounds in gridley. we'll keep a close eye on this fire. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning, but for now, send it back to scott and chris. all right. ginger thank you all. the spike in power outages actually started yesterday as triple digit heat overwhelmed some of the power sources. and that included neighborhoods in danville. one lengthy outage led to an early closing time for the danville brewing company, and peasant and pear restaurant downtown, and we were able to talk with management in each business. they admit outages are never good for the bottom line. obviously, it's very frustrating for us, for the customers, you know, is we want to be a place people can escape the heat, you know, have a nice cold beer, you know, some great food, lose several thousands of dollars of sales. but on a night like this, now you don't get any of that sales money an

we talked about the thompson fire up in butte county. there is also a fire in santa. well, that's part of napa county that we're seeing as well as solano county and then other fires that are nearby. all of this causing smoke and our air quality outlook is not that great for people who have any kind of health conditions. you want to limit your time outside. we're seeing the worst of that in the east bay as we deal with this high pressure that causes the air to sink as it sinks, it warms, and it also doesn't allow for it to really mix out to give us some fresh breezes. so we are looking at a hazy sky across the bay area. but our models show that much of the smoke is moving off towards the east, so we're still once again dealing with some high levels of ozone and wildfire smoke. and our temperatures are heating up so fast. we are already at 100 degrees in fairfield. we haven't even made it to noon yet. we're at 99 in livermore. it's 90 in san jose, and we're seeing a lot of 70s for the peninsula, but it will also be very warm there as we go throughout the day. and it's h

sundown and a large wildfire destroying homes in butte county.king the smoke and wildfire conditions as that fire tops 3500 acres. and what started as an eviction call ended in gunfire. the tense situation unfolding in a san francisco neighborhood. the news at five starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. the scorcher continues for the bay area with triple digit temperatures making for an uncomfortably hot day not even close to being over. live look from some of our cameras across the bay area tonight. this heat wave expected to last for days. in fact, into next week. we're also tracking a large wildfire to the north in butte county. a fire exploded in the city of oroville yesterday morning. the so-called thompson fire has now grown to 3500 acres, and there is no containment. 28,000 people have been told to evacuate. at least four buildings have already been destroyed. four firefighters have been hurt. fire departments from across the bay area, including san jose and san francisco, have sent in extra crews to help out. well,

one of our media helicopters over the fire in butte county. you can see how fast it's moving up this hillside just outside of chico. you can see the small residential neighborhood right near those fire lines. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. we know it's been extremely hot in the bay area. what are conditions like for firefighters on the front lines there, jeff? well, they're also dealing with a pretty persistent wind coming out of the south. and it's just taking these flames from this fire and all those hot conditions and pushing it down through a lot of these very steep canyons in the area. that's making it extremely difficult. i know a lot of you here have family or friends up in the chico area, myself included. i had some family members evacuated last night. they're okay, but it's just like everyone else. a lot of folks up in this area are going through it right now. and more evacuations as this fire just continues to spread right now. so let's put a perspective on this. you can see chico right here. this is continuing

butte county sheriff urging everyone to follow all of those evacuation orders. this county has seen time and time again where people have waited too long and they have lost their lives. the fire blows over. i can't make any promise or guarantee that we can get up there to save your life. the fire is also burning near the town of paradise. you may remember that is a town devastated by wildfire back in 2018. paradise right now is under evacuation warning and there's already a suspect in custody tied to this fire. he's identified as 42 year old ronnie dean stout. authorities say that a witness saw him acting strangely at that scene of a car fire. in the process of spreading the flames, a meteorologist, kari hall, is here and tracking conditions. firefighters are facing. and that fire is so big, it's creating kind of its own weather. yes, it has really exploded and it's created a lot of plumes of smoke, too. that's a damaging our atmosphere as we take a look at the conditions, those firefighters are facing 72 already to start out the morning, the humidity is very lo

we do have numerous fires that are burning, including the thompson fire up in butte county. towards the east and away from the bay area. so it does look good for this evening. although fireworks can temporarily put a lot of smoke in the air and affect our air quality, and hopefully we don't get any new fires, that's going to be the key to being able to breathe a little bit easier, but it is a spare the air alert day as we're dealing with more of that unhealthy air quality due to the high levels of ozone, and in this heat, especially with more people being outside, watch out for the signs of heat exhaustion or what's more, severe heat stroke. we're looking at some of those symptoms, including dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, rapid heart rate and weakness. and then for heat stroke, it's confusion. you stop sweating red hot dry skin, rapid strong pulse and then eventually possibly loss of consciousness. so be very careful out there as our temperatures go back to 102 degrees for morgan hill, we'll see some highs over 100 degrees for the tri valley parts of the east bay. it won

this is burning in butte county. we've been following this one park fire tearing through northern california with no sign of stopping in. just two days, it's tripled in size, torching over 178,000 acres. cal fire says its containment has been downgraded to 0%, compared to 3% yesterday. it has forced thousands to evacuate from their homes in both butte and tehama county, near the city of chico and some might not have homes left, as 134 structures have been burnt to the ground. we spoke to one evacuee who says the worst part is not knowing what survived. my dad's house is up in forest ranch and i. it looks like when you look on the map, it looks like it's been taken over, but it's hard to know without feet on the ground to see. yeah. you know, is it okay? we don't know. it's the uncertainty. there's a lot of uncertainty that comes with being in a fire. butte county da's office says they have arrested ronnie dean stout on suspicion of starting this fire. he's set to be arraigned on monday. and here's another look at jus
