caitlin dickerson joins us now, a staff writer for the atlantic. >> good morning. have a third of venezuelans saying, they were planning on living in the country, a reminder that we talk about immigration in a fluid and volatile situation. tell us what it is that brought you to the gap. >> i've been writing about immigration for a long time and i've been watching the numbers. they have risen again and again. the first bike was 2015. prior to that, you have a couple of hundred people crossing this land route every year. other than that, you really only have drug cartels moving drugs and guns through the country because it is so dangerous. what happens when alternative paths close, especially paths to the united states, where a lot of people who are migrating want to? they look for alternatives, and the cartels take advantage. that is why the numbers have gone up so much. >> caitlin, to be honest at this point, i just think a lot of people look at u.s. policy, particularly here in the u.s. as just unserious. you have the administration put forward arguably one of the

and caitlin dickerson joins us live now from new york, kaitlan. good morning. to have you on the program i you obviously wrote about this. i know you also have been engaged in a massive new investigation that follows up on some significant reporting that you have done on immigration. the bottom line here is that kamala harris was named as the person. should address the root causes of migration at the beginning of the biden administration and we had seen that crisis continues to unfold, not just here in the u.s. but also in many of these countries can you explain what you found and how you look at her role in this sure. >> i mean, i think what trying to interrogate kamala harris's record on immigration shows us is just how complicated this issue is and how simple fixes don't work. i mean, i've been following immigration for a lot long time as it's ebbed and flowed over administrations, republican and democrat. and it's not like you can impose one simple tool. and change global movement patterns so vice president harris, his job was to, as you said, look at the r

caitlin dickerson joins me now. you are brave enough to bring this information back.ke that journey, and why has the darien gap really excluded as a migration route? >> thank you so much. i should say i'm not the only journalist who has done this but, like a lot of us, i watched as the numbers in the darien gap have gone up and up and up to these unimaginable, previously unimaginable levels and i decided in my reporting to both try to bring readers into this experience where you are climbing hills that cause people to have heart attacks, cliffs that people fall off of snakes, jaguars, people die of dehydration, hunger, and flash floods in the darien gap, and then you also have robbery and sexual assault is a huge risk. the list is massive and yet people are there because of a couple of reasons. the circumstances abroad that lead people to flee their homes or get worse. the greatest number of people in the darien gap is from venezuela, which your viewers know is seated in conflict now over stolen election by nicolas maduro. people are coming from haiti, africa, asia, a
