william rosecrans disaster at chickamauga is. funny for a lot of reasons, but my favorite is that it gave abraham lincoln the opportunity to utter one of his funnier barnyard stories and that was that rosecrans, after the battle, looked stunned like a dog hit on the head. i've never seen a dark kid on the hood, but i imagine it's very funny and the idea that lincoln had is excellent and i really enjoy it. it's one of my favorite civil war stories, so you have stunned the dark william rosecrans and accidentally victorious braxton bragg and bragg says, i've actually won a battle. it's not even a tactical draw. i could claim a victory. so what i should do is let rosecrans retreat. yeah, yeah. so he did. he did it. he. he allowed rosecrans to fall back chattanooga while his army looked down on the city from atop the high bluffs of missionary ridge. he had not consolidated the prize and mutiny once again threatens his command. this is a theme in braxton bragg army in the days and weeks that followed the battle, rancor ripples through

it's no accident to me that some of the first outfields preserved in this country were chickamauga, vicksburggettysburg. and then you had a few others in there as well. that illustrates to me how important to that generation to the veterans and to the nation, and that to me put an exclamation point on the importance of this and why it matters. so now i'm going to turn over to vicksburg.th here you go. >> i would just sit here, thinking the first week in july, obviously i mentioned you couldn't win a presidential caucus or nomination in iowa or new hampshire, where you can't win a pennant in april or may. well, that first week in july, that's your super tuesday in a presidential primary, or that's the dog daysog of august down te stretch in a baseball season. i would suck at that. but my big take away, moving from the past to the press is just what a class act emerging civil war is,s, what chris and e gang has done in putting on a conference like this and all yo folks, it's highly compressed, it's a pleasure to be here and be part of it and kudos, , well done. keep it up. >> thanks.
