abc's christiane cordero has details. christiane good morning. >> andrew good morning to you. biden administration is now pushing migrants to use legal pathways to enter the country through ports of entry. but critics say this change may only cause more problems overnight. a new policy on the southern border. president biden's new executive order now makes it harder for migrants who illegally cross into the u.s. to get asylum. the order was designed to take effect when the number of border encounters between ports of entry hit 2500 per day, meaning it took effect immediately at midnight. because the last time average daily encounters were below that level was back in 2021, when biden took office. the order will only be lifted when apprehensions drop to 1500 per day. numbers not seen since the pandemic. on the abc news start here podcast, homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas spoke about the changes. it is certainly our hope that with our continued press on, lawful pathways are continued. >> attack against the smugglers in the cartels and this bar that we will be able,
