i decided to run because in south dakota you can be a citizen legislator, south dakota has legislature that's only in session for 40 days a year. so they're all citizens, they show up, it's wonderful as governor because as governor they are there for a month and a half and they leave again for the rest of oh the year but i decided i could, you know, my husband and i together with our three kids at the time that i could still run our businesses, be the general manager but i could go and contribute to our legislature and do that and do them all well so i ran for the legislature, was there about a week and i recognized the leadership controlled everything. and decided if i was going to be away from my family and if i was going to be away from our businesses then i was going to be as impactful as possible and i ran to be majority leader in the house and elect today that. while i served in the legislature -- [applause] >> while i served in the legislature i rewrote our property tax system in south dakota. tradition, a part of south dakota's way of life.s the pheasant population grew, it is the pheasant capital of the world. the season open which begins in october is all but an official state holiday. the hunting includes a lot of families including my own. i can't remember a time when i didn't look forward to the pheasant opener. my dad would take me and siblings out hunting, taught us how to bag a rooster and work together in the field. he wasn't one to miss a season even into his late 90's. over the years i've enjoyed sharing this tradition with my daughters and later with their husbands, and i'm looking forward to passing it on to the next generation with -- when my grandchildren are old enough. mr. president, i was able to get out pheasant hunting over the holidays and there is nothing like a day spent outdoors with friend and families. i think that's what keeps hunters coming back every year. of course they also come for the challenge of the hunt and hopefully to limit out, in other words, to get a limit of pheasant, roosters. l
