now, let's go over to first alert meteorologist darren peck for what is coming up this week. >>> a lot more of what we had today. what we had today was kind of flormal. normal. marine layer. it is coming back. i want to show you how widespread the marine layer is going to be. i will get out of the way as we watch it fill in most of the bay. it will keep going. one of the mornings tomorrow where the marine layer is so far inland. going on our windows, out towards the central valley. it probably does not cover the entire santa clara valley. it will be fairly deep. by that, there will be a thick cloud deck. because of that it will be able to mist out. we have been doing it for the last two mornings, each morning, thick enough in the city, east bay hills, a little bit of rain. can you see some of the indicators in there? let's get rid of the clouds. i want you to be able to read the rainfall totals. it is not a lot. more like marine layer mist. half moon bay, in the city, and you get it for the east bay hills, just enough mist up there that you can measure it. so, expect that again for mon

darren peck is here with the range of temperatures that we saw today. >> yes. let's start off right there. looking at today's day time highs and setting the stage for what is coming tomorrow. one of the numbers that stands out is oakland. you broke the record with temperatures climbing into the middle to upper 80s. san francisco at 81, did not break the record there. we really need to keep the focus out here. the inland/east bay communities. the temperatures are still in the lower 100s. tomorrow you are going up, perhaps, 4-5 degrees. so, a quick snapshot takeaway. tomorrow hotter than today, and tomorrow it is likely going to be the hottest day of the next 7. for some of us tomorrow could be the hottest of the heatwave going back to tuesday anded with that could be some of the inland valleys, concord, livermore, antioch. you are still very much in this tomorrow from the intensity of the heat and then it is going to keep going for several more days. it is heat warning staying in effect until wednesday. still, of next week. when we get back together again we wil

let's get straight to meteorologist darren peck to find out where we'll see the worst of it, probably east bay? >> you got it. the same place we've been focusing on for this entire heatwave. a little perspective, let's start off with today's daytime highs to see where we're beginning. there is one part of the bay getting some help. santa rosa can oftentimes be one of the hottest locations, but you're not in this heatwave. temperatures in the low to mid-90s. look at that little low gap out there, the petaluma gap. cool air has been able to filter in there and help you out like it filters in through the golden gate. san francisco was only 71. look at everybody else, though, because that's not helping most other locations, especially inland, san jose mid-90s today, better than on the verge of 100. concord and livermore, let's get our bearings for today because as high as those numbers are, we're going up a few more degrees tomorrow. now i'm going to replace those numbers with tomorrow's. it's not huge, but it's about 3 degrees hotter tomorrow in concord, several degrees hotter in livermo

oh. >>> we will start with the weather, and meteorologist darren peck will join us now. >>> we will take a look at the numbers today, either at near, or way ahead of records, most of us for the inland valleys. temperatures up to 110 for some of those. in one sense this was the hottest day of the year, and of this heat wave. for many of us we started on tuesday, this is day number five, and i'm just reviewing things that showed you a moment ago because this is the most important aspect of the forecast, but it is not going away completely, so let's look at tomorrow's daytime eyes, we top out in the upper 90s for the inland, and 97 in pleasanton, we will go to 95 in san jose. and we will be low to mid 80s along the bayshore, that is why we have a heat advisory here, excessive heat warnings there, their perspective on this is crucial. those numbers tomorrow are 10 degrees cooler than today. so, from one standpoint, that is a huge victory and a big improvement. and those are still 10 degrees below average, you will be feeling that the rest of day number six, at this point. and of daytime eyes

and watch darren peck who will talk about what the weather is like ahead. >> and one of the pictures for the next 24 hours is the smoke overhead that is drifting down from the park fire. that is how far this is coming. i will show you that in one second. look out the window. we should get used to this for a good part of tomorrow in the afternoon. most of it is elevated. there is an air quality advisory for this. looking at the air quality sensors. most of them were good, in fact. so, in addition to a little bit of smoke in the sky for the upper levels the marine layer has been on overdrive lately. and as we look ahead to tomorrow it is coming back with a vengeance. we are going to see the clouds really build back in again. looking ahead to tomorrow morning, coming down to the south bay. this is one of the few places that you will probably wake up to relative and clear skies. you can see the north pay is covered in gray. the rest of the bay, look outer the window, another one of those mornings, our marine layer here goes so far inland that it goes out towards the central valley again.

let's bring in meteorologist darren peck, who will tell us how hot it went. >> right to the headline, it's the number right back there. 111 for concord was the poster child, to really hopefully get everyone's attention. this is tuesday's daytime highs . tomorrow it will be more like 100 there. but it's a big jump, from monday to tuesday, tuesday and wednesday are the peak. i will use some of the forecast imagery for a second of or behind my shoulder. the excessive heat watch is now an excessive heat warning. we will come back to those numbers in detail. i want to show you your part of the bay. not just tuesday and wednesday, but for the next seven days, because this is a long-duration event. the headline is the excessive heat sticking around, tuesday through friday. noticed that it doesn't include the immediate bayshore, because there is a lower grade heat message for that. you have a heat advisory. daytime highs will be is high and overnight lows will be is warm either. so you are getting a bit of a break in between which will be crucially important. there is a lot to go over on this

let's go over now to first alert meteorologist darren peck with more on those details. >> we couldn't have better timing for this weekend. starting tomorrow, it's like flipping the switch. it's the first significant heat wave of the year. it really peaks on tuesday and wednesday. tomorrow, you'll notice the difference and two sets of the numbers around here and how hot your part of the bay will be tomorrow. in general for comparison, these are anywhere from three to six degrees above where you were today. so technically it is warmer. but it is not too extreme yet. so just go ahead and pick out your spot. you're going to go to near 100 for many of those inland locations there. you can see the north bay valleys. but let's go over here and focus on concord, apt yock, livermore. let's pause on that view. i will remove today's forecast, which will show us the numbers for tomorrow and tuesday's numbers, we will look at wednesday, so look at the numbers there now. let's go down to san jose. you can see where your numbers will be by the time we get down there, you'll be at 98. the first set o

. >>> let's go over now to first alert meteorologist darren peck with what we can expect this workweek. >> andrea, here is the complicated part to the forecast. some of the places in the bay that needed help the most got a 10-degree temperature drop today. on its own, that does sound really good. we'll take it. but the 10-degree temperature drop for today means your daytime highs were still on the verge of 100. so these are the highs for today that have just come in. still waiting for the official modifications on these, but these are pretty darn close to what the official will end up being. look at concord and livermore. you've got a 10-degree drop, but still around the verge of 100. take a look at that 99 in livermore and look at san jose at 91. this is where we will sit for a little while. so because of that, you still have an excessive heat warning that is staying in place until wednesday night. that still has not changed. so you still got to be doing what you're doing to go easy on yourself and to take this seriously even though we know we've gotten a little bit of help. you don't

cal fire has got it 5% contained, so it is time for darren peck with why the terrain is such an important factor. >> i think the virtual map will help us get more context on the creek fire. sinaloa wilderness regional park, directly south of pleasanton, if you drive through the canyon, it is very complicated topography. and a lot of those flames were topography driven yesterday. i was watching as the sun was going down, the flames were able to race up the hill. the wind is not terribly strong, and the humidity is relatively high, those are two excellent numbers for the fire burning in the backyard right now, this is the one we would have some of the bigger concern for because it is so close to home. but it pales in comparison to what is happening on the other side of the state. let's go to the virtual monitor over my shoulder, and what you will see in the time-lapse is smoke showing up in the sky from the park fire. there's the marine layer. this is from mount diablo looking up to the north, that is smoke drifting away from the park fire. a little bit more context on the park fire. this i

first alert meteorologist darren peck has a look at how this is even possible right now. darren? >> mind boggling, isn't it? by the way, death valley already holds the record, 130 degrees. it wasn't that long ago. it was 2020 and 2021 it was making national headlines when it did it. it already has been 130 degrees at that weather station in death valley national park, that humble looking weather station. it's pretty important in terms of world meteorological records because twice here we've hit 130. it's possible we've been hotter since we've been keeping records across the globe, but none of those other stations are reliable enough to go in the record books as the hottest except for this one at bad water. to understand why this location could potentially hit 130 again, we got to get a bigger picture view. here we are on the west. where's death valley and why does the geography and location matter so much? you see where death valley is here? many people already know this, but death valley is so low it's below sea level. in fact, when you get down to the bottom of this valley, you

darren peck is here to talk about all of that and a big cool down. i don't know. that does not look promising to me. >> that is the obvious impression you would have on that. no means the pyrotechnic expert. i am confident at that point. that cloud is so low. you will see it again. you will see the fireworks you may have to put them up above the clouds. i will show you why it is not that ominous, either where the fireworks will happen. first off, we got business to discuss. first off, today's day time highs, happy fourth of july. you got a 2-3 degree break from where we were yesterday. we have a cool down, that does not mean a lot. you were still in the hundreds. santa rosa got a big break. cool air that came into the north bay this morning thanks to the flow that is coming in through the golden gate. what matters is what happens tomorrow. let's stay here for a minute. that has been part of the bay. focused on the most. most at risk from health impacts at this. we just lost the day time highs. we will bring back in tomorrow. we will go back up. even if you did get

peck has the latest. >> we have to go into a little bit of context before we get to the smoke plume heading our way. the fire burning in our own backyard, it still has some evacuation orders on it. the creek fire, this is the sonoma regional wilderness park, a few people have probably been there, if you live in the tri-valley, you probably know it. if you go south, you get to that canyon with all of that convoluted topography helping to funnel the flames up to the ridge tops and there has been southerly wind helping to fan that fire. it is close to home, it is not putting out a great deal of smoke, we don't see significant impacts on air quality from that one. if you want to see the smoke that brian was just talking about, that is heading our way from the park fire on the other side of the state. this is from our vantage point on mount diablo looking north, this is the marine layer, everything up there is smoke that has been drifting our way. that is from the park fire on the northeastern side of the state and much of that smoke is heading our way and it'll probably stay elevated, s

peck says we could be in this for awhile. darren again. >paul>i know it's not. it's not what many of us want to hear. there is some good news on this, liz. it is not going to get as hot as it did in this last heat with. i don't have temperatures going to 110 inland. but i do have temperatures in this forecast that are going to climb back to the low hundreds and, yes, may stay there for a good little while, so let's go in order here's today we lost our marine layer. it'll come back. we'll see a little bit of it built back in tonight. i'll show you how you know why. widespread it will be. but it won't be much. but before i get to that, here's the headline. the first little uptick in heat coming our way is going to last thursday and friday before we get a mild little break over the weekend and then it's going to warm back up again. so the national weather service has put out the first heat advisory. this is for the thursday friday time frame. usual suspects are included in this one inland east bay. santa clara valley. and the no

let's go to darren peck to figure out how hot it's going to be. >> this was the peak heat, the hottest day, for good news. it will be 10 degrees cooler for some of us tomorrow. on that positive note, it's still going to be hot tomorrow. we were breaking records today. to point out the positive, you're going from 111 in livermore, you broke the record today. concord, 105 at the airport, and for santa rosa that breaks the record at the airport as well. we did not break records in the immediate bay due to the marine layer. so here's tomorrow. better, but still 100 degrees in livermore. 98 in concord, 97 in pleasanton. excessive heat warning tomorrow. we will keep the cooling trend going, we will bottom out on tuesday, and this is as low as numbers are getting all week. for some it means low 90s. inland valleys. this also means after that bottom on tuesday it's going to start warming up. we'll show you in the complete first alert forecast. >> thanks, darren. the fog has been a big help for communities along the coast. we saw 40-degree difference between them in the inland areas. one of the

let's check in with darren peck on the conditions, dare snen. >> first, we will get updated numbers on the biggest fire in the state right now. the park fire is the 20th largest fire in california history the fire has had explosive growth over the last two days and shows no signs of slowing down. burned more than 130 buildings including homes. another 4200 are threatened and there is currently no containment. you can see from the map just how much the fire has grown since yesterday. it is still growing. new numbers from cal fire show it has burned 239,000 acres across butte counties. now the fire is coming dangerously close to the rebuilt town of paradise that is wiped out by the deadliest fire in state history in 2018. it is a terrifying case of deja vu for some evacuees. >> i lost my dad in the camp fire. we got our home and we have been working on it a lot lately. fixing it up. we are on the verge of losing all of that. >> investigators believe the fire was started by 42-year-old ronnie staut who the witnesses say pushed a flaming car down a 60 foot embankment. he is in custody faci

darren peck is tracking all these changes. >> at 11:00 tonight, this heat advisory expires. let's look at the heat advisory over there, i will put on today's daytime highs and we will do some comparison. we start out looking at numbers along the peninsula, and following a trend from the 87 in redwood city, up to san francisco, which was pretty comfortable today, to a mildly hotter northbay, but not hot for heat advisories in the lower and middle 90s. concord, your coverage temperature was on the verge of 100 today. san jose back in the 90s today. los gatos was in the upper 90s for daytime highs. this was a hot day for that part of the valleybrook watch what happens when we look at the progression of how we will start cooling things down. cooling layer starts coming back in. this is a beginning of a change for us. you will get probably a 5 to 6 degreed drop tomorrow, but saturday there will be a lot more and daytime highs will be 20 degrees cooler than you were today. we will look at what that means for your part of the bay coming up in your first alert forecast in a few minu

. >>> let's go to first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> we have to talk about the connection between what will make headlines tonight, hurricane beryl, which is about to come on shore in the next few hours, and our heatwave. you can actually see both of those when we use the virtual set this way. we will take a look at hurricane beryl's progression in a second. when you look at the globe as a whole, there are clouds everywhere. look at california. a big blank spot. so, on the one hand, you can visualize the effect that the center of high pressure has over california and much of the west right now. it is effectively squashed out the clouds. that is our focus. we will return to the heatwave and that is going to be the main discussion in this forecast in terms of why we have to go back up. wednesday and thursday the numbers are going back to. first, here is hurricane beryl, you can watch that come on shore, and re-intensified category one. it makes landfall somewhere between corpus christie in houston. probably around 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. our time. it will be a big story and a major storm

. >>> let's get over to meteorologist darren peck with that all important forecast. i guess before we project how things will look later, how hot did it get today? >> that's what we need to talk about. i'm still not over the stinson beach photo. imagine what the drive was like there. think of parking. the beach is a great idea, but you've got to plan for scenes like that. we got a little bit of help today. before i show you the numbers, we cooled down about 2 to 4 degrees in general for most parts of the bay today. look at the wind streams. you see them coming in through the golden gate and taking their turn up through san pablo bay working down here towards the rest of the bay. this helped a little bit, but it didn't help enough. let's look at today's daytime highs. we'll get the wide view. we'll take everybody in for the daytime highs for today, kind of pick out your part of the bay, but the part that really matters most in terms of comparison with tomorrow is the inland east bay because even if most of these numbers are cooler than you were yesterday by a couple d

peck is looking toward the nineties. >paul>back. i know, but you know what's good about that liz is and you said it right? it's nineties. i don't have a forecast. that brings us back to the kind of heat that we went through for that week and a half stretch where we get up to 110 for inland valleys that's not coming back. but we're only holding on to this wonderful stretch of weather that we've got out there for a few more days and then by by friday, the heat is coming back. look what happened today. this is a replay high resolution. satellite shows you the marine layer getting pulled off the coast and we're all looking at sunshine right now, but watch it build back in again tonight will use that same depiction to show you tomorrow morning. the marine layer is going to feel most of the bay. so we still get some help tomorrow if you look at the daytime highs tomorrow are very similar to today. and these numbers are pretty much right where we should be for this time of year, a lot of mid to upper eighties for the inland val

peck.un. >> okay this day, this day we just had. daytime highs were down to average for this time of year . we've got a huge break and it is going to be a big head fake if you are thinking you can kind of just lunge into this week with the day you just had because rings aren't going to change pretty dramatically starting tomorrow. here is one of the reasons why today was so nice. look at the wind streams so this is the way we visualize the air is moving through the bay. there is a definite increase right here . the brighter the colors, as you start to shade into yellow and orange, it shows you the intensity of the wind speed picking up. think of that as the intensity of cool onshore air getting forced through the golden gate. getting into the east bay and cooling everybody down. watch what happens when we look at today's daytime highs and for today i'm just going to pick out some of the representative spots when we look at tomorrow's daytime highs everybody is going to be on this map. but j

here is darren peck. >> there's a possibility of isolated showers just off to the east today, so i will show you how likely it might be that we see any of that and then we get to the good news, much cooler temperatures for the first half of this week, getting everybody back down to average. but, take a look at the big picture, there is a lot of activity over here in terms of isolated showers, that is nothing unusual, that happens in july and august, it is the summer monsoon and the sierra nevada usually gets in on the act. is this where the storms can be pushed even further west? when you look at the big picture, to understand how we might answer that question, the carpeting is spinning in this clockwise direction. that is your center of high pressure which is steering the storms. if that nudges to the west a little bit more, we see the showers and the isolated thunderstorms also get pushed our way a little bit more. we have been talking about this for the past few days in terms of the spinning high pressure to pull the smoke our way. and thankfully that hasn't been too overwhelming but

. >> let's get right to meteorologist darren peck. >> first, a little explanation on that, why would we need public safety power shutoffs on a day like today? you're not feeling any wind where you, are most likely. look at the winds on the visualization here as we go through today, and keep your eye through here, altamont pass. that far eastern side of alameda county, that's where the power shutoffs are happening. look at the wind. that's classic. a typical onshore breeze, but those winds get funneled on this side of the hill, and that's why they've got the public safety power shutoff there. colusa and lake county, within the last few hours a new fire start. this is the ridge fire. at this point this is about 300 acres in size. it's burning towards colusa county up in a place called walker ridge, if you know anything about the snow mountain berryessa national monument, this is within there on a spectacular part called walker ridge. but every story needs a map for context. that camera angle, that camera's here and looking that way. there's your perspective. clear lake's over here. wal
